Seismic interpretation is a critical aspect of hydrocarbon exploration, where geoscientists often struggle to accurately recognize patterns and anomalies in large datasets. Machine learning techniques offer a promising solution by allowing for the quick and accurate analysis of multiple and large-size seismic volumes. This study leverages seismic facies analysis, seismic attribute analysis, and supervised machine learning to identify and characterize turbidite deposits in the Dangerous Grounds region, an underexplored area recently revealed by high-resolution broadband seismic data. Through seismic stratigraphy, two distinct phases of turbidite deposition were identified: a lower unit showing higher amplitude and signs of faulting effect, and an upper, present-day unit characterized by lower amplitude and continuous reflectors. The attribute expression of these turbidites shows strong amplitude response, high relative acoustic impedance, and high gray-level co-occurrence matrix entropy emphasizing their distinctiveness from surrounding facies, with variations in reflector continuity and spectral decomposition providing further insight into their depositional processes and sediment characteristics. By applying nine machine learning classifiers with twenty seismic attributes as input, this study achieved over 99% accuracy in distinguishing turbidite facies from background, with the neural network, random forest, K-nearest neighbors, decision tree, and support vector machine exhibiting optimal performance. The study contributes significantly to the regional understanding of turbidite deposits through detailed machine learning-aided seismic characterization. It underscores the value of integrating domain knowledge with machine learning techniques in enhancing subsurface interpretations, offering a comprehensive methodology for seismic facies analysis in similarly complex and underexplored regions.

Gas chimneys and gas clouds in the subsurface media are known as one of the indications of possible petroleum reservoirs. Investigations of their properties are mostly initiated by seismic attribute interpretation on reflection seismic data. However, due to the complexity of their behavior and their difficult interpretation of seismic attributes, state-of-the-art methods are mostly required to be applied on the seismic data to prevent any misinterpretation. This is mostly done through attribute integration and multi-attribute analysis. This research presents a study on seismic attributes and integration on several 2D seismic reflection lines from the Gorgan Plain. It is located in Northeast Iran, on the western border of the region’s well-known Kopeh-Dagh fold and thrust belt, and southeastern border of the South Caspian Basin. Hydrocarbon systems of the Gorgan Plain are poorly known and have not been widely studied, but according to preliminary investigations, this region has the potential for hydrocarbon occurrences. The aim of this study is to investigate presence and then delaminate the affected area of possible gas chimneys that are related to possible hydrocarbon reservoirs. Gas chimneys are assumed to be created due to the routes, mostly made by faults, that provoke light hydrocarbons components to migrate toward the surface. Preliminary interpretations of seismic reflection data in this study revealed that at least two gas chimneys occurred within the Gorgan Plain. As it was mentioned, since they are mostly due to the faulting above the hydrocarbon reservoir, gas chimney and heavy faulting might exhibit the same effects on the seismic data and then on its attributes, which are amplitude reduction and high damping on energies, distortion of the waveshape and seismic velocity reduction. Thus, care should be taken in separation of these two different geologic phenomena on seismic attributes. This also was done in this study through utilized integration of the most relevant seismic attributes such as Instantaneous-phase, Chaos, Variance and Remove-bias attributes. Based on the result of interpretations and according to the evolution of the basin and its structural reconstruction on other studies, gas chimneys of the Gorgan Plain, are in relation to the operation of fault zones in Cenozoic erathem in the region. These fault zones which cut the entire Cenozoic erathem, create the pathway for vertical migration of hydrocarbons through Cheleken formation (reservoir rock) and its overburden sedimentary sequences. In other words, operation of fault zones within Cenozoic sedimentary sequence, is the main reason for gas seepage in the Gorgan Plain, which is also shown in seismic data.

This study uses a machine learning (ML) ensemble modeling approach to predict porosity from multiple seismic attributes in one of the most promising Main Dolomite hydrocarbon reservoirs in NW Poland. The presented workflow tests five different model types of varying complexity: K-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forests (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), support vector machine (SVM), single layer neural network with multilayer perceptron (MLP). The selected models are additionally run with different configurations originating from the pre-processing stage, including Yeo–Johnson transformation (YJ) and principal component analysis (PCA). The race ANOVA method across resample data is used to tune the best hyperparameters for each model. The model candidates and the role of different pre-processors are evaluated based on standard ML metrics – coefficient of determination (R2), root mean squared error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). The model stacking is performed on five model candidates: two KNN, two XGB, and one SVM PCA with a marginal role. The results of the ensemble model showed superior accuracy over single learners, with all metrics (R2 0.890, RMSE 0.0252, MAE 0.168). It also turned out to be almost three times better than the neural net (NN) results obtained from commercial software on the same testing set (R2 0.318, RMSE 0.0628, MAE 0.0487). The spatial distribution of porosity from the ensemble model indicated areas of good reservoir properties that overlap with hydrocarbon production fields. This observation completes the evaluation of the ensemble technique results from model metrics. Overall, the proposed solution is a promising tool for better porosity prediction and understanding of heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs from multiple seismic attributes.

How to effectively and economically estimate the occurrence of sandstone-type uranium deposits in deep metallogenic environments considering the high costs of drilling methods has troubled the uranium geologists for a long time. To address this, we developed a novel workflow using a combination of clustering and neural networks in seismic attributes (SA) analysis to characterize uranium-bearing environments in directly predicting uranium zones. In the workflow, PCA and a clustering method for SA analysis in the target layer were first used to predict favorable zones for uranium; second, supervised neural networks were utilized for quantitative estimation of gamma volume, with subsequent delineation of the zones with high gamma anomalies; finally, results from the two processes were examined for mutual intersection, and intersection results with ordinal ranking of A and B were then extracted. In practical application, several A-level and B-level regions were predicted, which represent very high U-mineralization potential and significant potential, respectively. The prediction results were then essentially verified by logging data of the study area. We consider our developed approach to be a reasonably cost-effective technique for uranium-bearing environment prediction as it can yield useful suggestions for drilling programs with significantly reduced cost and prospecting risk.

Zaprezentowany w niniejszym artykule przykład tego typu interpretacji obejmuje środkową część profilu formacji z Machowa w centralnej części zapadliska przedkarpackiego (rejon usytuowany pomiędzy Dąbrową Tarnowską a Dębicą). W obrębie analizowanego segmentu mioceńskiego basenu sedymentacyjnego udokumentowano zmienny w czasie, transgresywno-regresywny charakter sedymentacji, związany zarówno z eustatycznymi zmianami poziomu morza, jak i z lokalną aktywnością tektoniczną.

Recognition of the paleoenvironment of sedimentation of the Machów Formation during the Late Baden and Sarmatian is still poorly understood, despite its regional spreading and recognition of the profile of this formation in numerous wells. New high-resolution 3D seismic data acquired in 2015 allowed for an unconventional approach to interpretation, based on the assumptions of the sequence stratigraphy methodology in combination with tectonostratigraphic interpretation and seismic attribute analysis. The research revealed a range of information that was most often overlooked by standard interpretative methods. An example of this type of interpretation covering a middle part of the Machów Formation profile in the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep (the area between Dąbrowa Tarnowska and Dębica cities) is presented in this paper. Based on seismostratigraphic interpretation it was possible to identify elements of depositional architecture typical of clastic sedimentary basins that are genetically related to depositional systems tracts. Interpretation of the Wheeler diagram showed the existence of many hiatuses that are the result of sediments erosion or correspond to periods of no sedimentation. Within the analyzed segment of the Miocene sedimentary basin, a time-varying, transgressive-regressive character of sedimentation was evidenced, related to both eustatic sea-level changes and local tectonic activity. In general, the largest portion of delivered material was transported from the south; however, sequences composed of heteroliths are also present in the profile, where material was delivered alternately from two different directions (i.e., from N or NW and from S). Seismic attributes interpretation enabled identification of different types of paleoenvironmental elements such as braided-deltas, fan-deltas, intraslope channels and lobes, and basin fans. In the analyzed part of the Machów Formation profile several tectonostratigraphic units were distinguished that differ in their structural framework and tectonic style. The morphology of the Miocene formations in the study area is marked by a positive structural element adjacent to the NW and SE with depressed zones. The chronostratigraphic image shows asymmetric fold-like structures and a series of minor faults indicating tectonic instability of this element. The proposed approach based on chronostratigraphic image and Wheeler diagram analysis in combination with tectonostratigraphic interpretation allowed for detailed recognition of sedimentary paleoenvironment as well as reconstruction of depositional and tectonic history of the analyzed segment of the Carpathian Foredeep basin.

Zainteresowanie utworami węglanowymi górnej jury i dolnej kredy występującymi w podłożu zapadliska przedkarpackiego związane jest głównie z licznymi odkryciami złóż węglowodorów.

Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous carbonate formations in the Carpathian Foredeep basement are the subject of research mainly due to the numerous oil and gas discoveries. The traps identified to date are characterized by a significant share of fracture porosity, associated with various karst forms (caverns, karst breccias, dissolution fractures) recognized on the basis of core analysis and well-logging data. Recognition of the distribution of paleokarst zones is an important issue for locating production wells and further exploration in the study area. The scope of the research included the identification of various forms of the paleokarst based on well data obtained during drilling and exploitation phase, as well as available measurement results of measurements with 6-arm deepmeter, CAST (Circumferential Acoustic Scanning Tool) and XRMI micro-resistivity scanner integrated with 3D seismic data analysis. Seismic attributes such as RMS Amplitude, Instantaneous Frequency, Relative Acoustic Impedance, and Variance were primarily used for the analysis because they best correlate with the karst intervals determined from the well data. Observed seismic features, such as lowered frequency, amplitude weakening, discontinuities and lack of the seismic reflection structure in the paleokarst intervals, can be associated with an increase in seismic wave absorption within the fracture-cavity zones. The analysis showed that individual regions of the study area are characterized by fairly diverse attribute records, which is influenced by, among others, the presence of the Badenian evaporites located above in close proximity to the top of the carbonate complex, or existence of reactivated dislocations. In a considerable part of the study area an anomalous seismic record connected with the mentioned evaporite series conceals the real character of the seismic image for the topmost part of the Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous carbonate complex and does not allow for its detailed interpretation. In this case, only those karst intervals which occur in a slightly lower part of the profile of the Upper Jurassic formations, developed most often within bioherm complexes, are recognizable in the seismic image. However, within the analysed 3D seismic survey the most clearly marked are the paleokarst zones developing in the surroundings of the paleovalleys, as well as the paleokarst forms closely related to the dislocation zones.

Do badań tych wykorzystano zdjęcie sejsmiczne 3D z obszaru środkowej części przedgórza Karpat, a szczegółowe analizy prowadzono w obrębie stropowej partii kompleksu węglanowego górnej jury i dolnej kredy.

The aim of this paper is to develop a methodology to identify geological zones/objects with more favorable petrophysical properties based on analysis of seismic and well data. For these studies 3D seismic image from the middle part of the Carpathian Foreland was used, and detailed analyses were carried out within the top part of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous carbonate complex. This paper presents results of performed analysis in the central part of the above-mentioned seismic image. Identification of spatial objects for potential CO2 sequestration was realized on the basis of seismic attributes calculated from simultaneous inversion. Seismic inversion is a useful tool for the estimation of reservoir properties from seismic data, as it enables the transformation of amplitude of seismic reflections into physical parameters of rocks and, consequently, into a quantitative description of the reservoir. Propagation of velocity seismic waves is one of the basic parameters that most reliably characterizes the physical properties of a geological medium. Cross plots of longitudinal wave impedance attributes versus Lambda-Rho (Zp – λρ) and Lambda-Rho versus Mu-Rho (λρ – µρ) were made, which best represented the relationships of the elastic parameters. The horizon probe option available in Geobody Interpretation module of Petrel software was used to perform calculations. A time gate covering the interval from the interpreted seismic horizon corresponding to the Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous top (J3+K1str) to the time value of 120 ms below this horizon was adopted. The developed methodology can be applied in the future both for identification of the zones of better reservoir parameters as well as for more advanced processes of static and dynamic models building for the analyzed rock formations. After conducting necessary analyses and modeling the identified objects can be used for potential CO2 storage.

The aim of this paper was to distinguish zones with more preferred reservoir parameters based on the analysis of seismic attributes calculated from seismic inversion, combined with well data. The calculations were performed on 3D seismic volumes located in the central part of the Carpathian Foreland. The subject of the study was the upper part of the Upper Jurassic carbonate complex. Cross plots of longitudinal wave impedance attributes against Lambda-Rho (Zp – λρ) and Lambda-Rho against Mu-Rho (λρ – µρ) were used to identify zones with preferred parameters. The calculations used the horizon probe option available in the Geobody Interpretation module in Petrel software. Based on the results, it was concluded that the best match on seismic sections with porosity profiling (PHI) in G-4 well was obtained for the variant of Lambda-Rho vs. Mu-Rho calculations, in which three classes of value ranges were separated within the identified zones with preferable reservoir parameters. It allowed to better visualize the variability of the analyzed parameters. The results of the research indicate that the Upper Jurassic carbonate formations in the study area are characterized by varying reservoir parameters, with the zones with better properties located mainly in the top part of this complex. In general, the region with better development of reservoir properties is located to the northwest of the analyzed G-4 well. It can be assumed that this is due to the presence of regional dislocations in this area, around which fracturing has developed. Most likely, an additional factor responsible for the increase in porosity in this zone is the karst surface, developed directly in the uppermost part of the Jurassic formations. The presented methodology can find application not only for direct identification of reservoir intervals with preferred parameters, but can be widely used in various types of spatial analysis and geophysical modeling.

The application of machine learning (ML) tools and data-driven modeling became a standard approach for solving many problems in exploration geology and contributed to the discovery of new reservoirs. This study explores an application of machine learning ensemble methods – random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) to derive porosity and saturation type (gas/water) in multihorizon sandstone formations from Miocene deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep. The training of ML algorithms was divided into two stages. First, the RF algorithm was used to compute porosity based on seismic attributes and well location coordinates. The obtained results were used as an extra feature to saturation type modeling using the XGBoost algorithm. The XGBoost was run with and without well location coordinates to evaluate the influence of the spatial information for the modeling performance. The hyperparameters for each model were tuned using the Bayesian optimization algorithm. To check the training models' robustness, 10-fold cross-validation was performed. The results were evaluated using standard metrics, for regression and classification, on training and testing sets. The residual mean standard error (RMSE) for porosity prediction with RF for training and testing was close to 0.053, providing no evidence of overfitting. Feature importance analysis revealed that the most influential variables for porosity prediction were spatial coordinates and seismic attributes sweetness. The results of XGBoost modeling (variant 1) demonstrated that the algorithm could accurately predict saturation type despite the class imbalance issue. The sensitivity for XGBoost on training and testing data was high and equaled 0.862 and 0.920, respectively. The XGBoost model relied on computed porosity and spatial coordinates. The obtained sensitivity results for both training and testing sets dropped significantly by about 10% when well location coordinates were removed (variant 2). In this case, the three most influential features were computed porosity, seismic amplitude contrast, and iso-frequency component (15 Hz) attribute. The obtained results were imported to Petrel software to present the spatial distribution of porosity and saturation type. The latter parameter was given with probability distribution, which allows for identifying potential target zones enriched in gas.

Metody uczenia maszynowego stanowią obecnie rutynowe narzędzie wykorzystywane przy rozwiązywaniu wielu problemów w geologii poszukiwawczej i przyczyniają się do odkrycia nowych złóż. Prezentowana praca pokazuje zastosowanie dwóch algorytmów uczenia maszynowego – lasów losowych (RF) i drzew wzmocnionych gradientowo (XGBoost) do wyznaczenia porowatości i typu nasycenia (gaz/woda) w formacjach piaskowców będących potencjalnymi horyzontami gazonośnymi w mioceńskich osadach zapadliska przedkarpackiego. Uzyskane wyniki zostały zaimportowane do programu Petrel, aby przedstawić przestrzenny rozkład porowatości i typu nasycenia. Ten ostatni parametr został przedstawiony wraz z rozkładem prawdopodobieństwa, co dało wgląd w strefy o najwyższym potencjale gazowym.

The results of the lithofacial analysis of data from the Moracz 3D seismic survey were among the main premises leading to the positioning of the new petroleum exploration well in that area. Unfortunately, the reservoir properties of the drilled part of the Main Dolomite carbonates differed significantly from those anticipated by the analysis of the amplitudes of the seismic signal recorded. Such surprisingly negative results impelled the reinterpretation of 3D seismic data. Hence, a number of analyses of the amplitudes, the frequencies, and the variability of phase shift were carried out in order to determine the influence of these parameters on the lithofacial interpretation of seismic data. The results revealed a fundamental error of amplitude with the extraction maps. It appeared that the distribution of amplitudes is not essentially controlled by the reservoir properties of the Main Dolomite carbonates but by the fault shadow effect coming from Mesozoic graben in the overburden. In addition, a large diversity of frequency spectra was found, which, combined with the small thickness of the exploration level, could have contributed to incorrect identification of seismic reflections. There was also a change in seismic signatures from the same reflection in different parts of the survey, raising doubts about the distribution of the phase rotation. In order to recognize phase rotation diversity, a new seismic data analysis was based upon the selected Triassic sediments of high impedance. The obtained maps demonstrated significant variability within the data volume due to attenuation. The reinterpreted data from the Moracz 3D seismic survey proved the uneven and unstable distribution of amplitudes, frequencies, and phase which resulted in erroneous conclusions of petroleum exploration. After modeling with the use of different frequency ranges, an analysis of the amplitude extraction of the horizons related to the Main Dolomite was performed. Then the amplitude ratio attribute was selected which eliminated the influence of the regional amplitude and frequency distribution and showed the distribution. of dolomite properties more reliably than the amplitude extraction maps.

W rozdziale 2 przedstawiono budowę geologiczną rejonu badań, uwzględniając wszystkie piętra strukturalne, rozwój litologiczny utworów poszczególnych jednostek, stosowane podziały litostratygraficzne i regionalne ramy paleogeograficzne. W rozdziale 6 zaprezentowano wyniki analizy obrazu sejsmicznego, wykonanej w oparciu o wybrane atrybuty sejsmiczne. W ramach pracy omówiono następujące atrybuty: RMS Amplitude, Envelope, Instantaneous phase, Dominant frequency, Instantaneous bandwidth, Apparent polarity, Relative acoustic impedance, First derivative, Iso-frequency component, Time gain, Chaos, Variance (Edge method), Local flatness. W rozdziale 7 zamieszczono przekroje litofacjalne, skonstruowane wzdłuż wybranych przekrojów sejsmicznych, prezentujące przestrzenny rozkład i wzajemne relacje pomiędzy utworami poszczególnych ogniw litostratygaficzych. Utwory najwyższych serii dolnej kredy (tj. mułowcowo-wapiennej i muszlowcowo-oolitowej górnej) reprezentują facje płytkomorskie związane z transgresją morską, która miała miejsce w walanżynie. Przedstawiona historia depozycyjna późnojurajsko-wczesnokredowego basenu sedymentacyjnego przedgórza Karpat, w połączeniu z opisem cech makroskopowych rdzeni wiertniczych, analizą mikrofacjalną i mikropaleontologiczną poszczególnych jednostek litostratygraficznych oraz interpretacją obrazu sejsmicznego, pozwala na kompleksową charakterystykę analizowanych utworów oraz wskazanie procesów mających największy wpływ na obecny charakter i stan zachowania badanych serii skalnych.

The main subject of this monograph is a reconstruction of the history of deposition and facial development of Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous deposits in the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep, based on data available from boreholes and a 3D seismic survey. The research area is located in the central part of the Carpathian Foreland, between two cities: Dąbrowa Tarnowska in the north-west and Dębica in the south-east. The new 3D seismic survey made in 2015 and the O-1 deep borehole – drilled in the same year and portraying a full profile of the Mesozoic sediments – allowed for much better recognition and documentation of many details of the geological structure of this previously poorly mapped area. The sedimentation of the carbonate formations of the Carpathian Foreland during the Late Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous took place in the shelf zone of the northern, passive margin of the Tethys Ocean. A characteristic feature of the Upper Jurassic sediments is their high facies diversity, due mainly to the presence of biohermal complexes and sets of layered marly-limestone sediments. Chapter 2 presents the geological structure of all structural stages in the area under study, including the lithological development, the lithostratigraphic divisions applied, and the regional palaeogeographic frameworks. Chapter 3 discusses both the history of research and the current state of knowledge regarding the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous carbonate sediments of the Carpathian Foreland. Chapter 4 describes the lithological characteristics of the carbonate sediments, considering lithostratigraphic units. This characterisation is based on a macroscopic examination of the available core material and analysis of the well logs. The lithostratigraphic profiles of selected deeper boreholes from the research area and its close vicinity document the current state of knowledge on lithostratigraphy and the facies development of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous deposits. Chapter 5 features the microfacies and micropalaeontological characteristics of the carbonate sediments under study. Based on the results of many years of research and literature data, the possibilities of determining the age of every lithostratigraphic unit are discussed. Chapter 6 presents the analysis of the seismic 3D image based on selected seismic attributes. As part of the work, the following attributes are discussed: RMS Amplitude, Envelope, Instantaneous phase, Dominant frequency, Instantaneous bandwidth, Apparent polarity, Relative acoustic impedance, First derivative, Iso-frequency component, Time gain, Chaos, Variance (Edge method), and Local flatness. The analysis revealed additional important information regarding both the lithological development and the spatial range of sediments of individual lithostratigraphic units, at the same time facilitating the detailed location of fault zones. Based on the interpretation of the seismic image within the studied rock complex, the occurrence of angular unconformity, disturbance, and deformation zones related to synsedimentary tectonic as well as probable gravity-flow deposits are also documented. Chapter 7 presents lithofacial cross-sections constructed along selected seismic sections reflecting the spatial distribution and relationships between the sediments of individual lithostratigraphic units. Chapter 8 analyses the distribution of Upper Jurassic biohermal complexes in relation to the morphology of the Jurassic base surface. An analysis of the distribution of organic buildups belonging to the Huge Sponge-Microbial Bioherms Series, interpreted indirectly from seismic image, indicates two main areas where they can be found. These are the north-west part of the study area – where a quite extensive biohermal complex occurs (‘Complex N’), the exact range of which is difficult to determine due to later regional dolomitisation processes – and the area located in the central part of the seismic survey, where a complex of several very tall buildups with steep edges was found (‘Complex S’). Chapter 9 is devoted to the issue of the depositional history of the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous sedimentary basin of the Carpathian Foreland and to a discussion of the role of the most important factors influencing facies distribution in the research area. It has been shown that a characteristic feature of a large part of the Jurassic sediments is the strongly diachronic nature of the distribution of facies controlled by the varying bottom relief of the sedimentation basin and by some local factors related to synsedimentary tectonic episodes. The Sponge-Globuligerinid Series, beginning the profile of the Upper Jurassic sediments and representing the deepest sedimentation stage in the open shelf conditions, is characterised by a relatively high homogeneity of lithology in the whole Carpathian Foreland area. The ‘S’ biohermal complex developed over the elevated zone composed of several smaller tectonic elements, whilst the ‘N’ biohermal complex developed on a large, elevated part of the horst zone. The intensively developing ‘N’ and ‘S’ biohermal complexes affected successive deposition of the Late Jurassic sedimentary basin in the study area more and more. Those biohermal complexes were the source of the material redeposited into deeper parts of the sedimentary basin. On seismic profiles in the south-east neighbourhood of the ‘S’ biohermal complex, there is a characteristic high-amplitude record including the entire reflection set of variable dip angles. The frequent polarity changes which are visible within this zone in the Apparent polarity attribute, as well as the extremely variable range of values the Relative acoustic impedance attribute, prove the strong lithological differentiation of this rock complex. During the Tithonian time (sedimentation of the Coral-Oncolite Series), there was clear unification of the sedimentation conditions in the entire Carpathian Foreland area, mainly due to disappearance of the bottom relief diversity. At the same time another stage of dislocation reactivation occurred, as evidenced by the angular unconformity and the erosion traces of older sediments associated with this unconformity. The deposits of the Lower Shellbed-Oolite Series scattered throughout the research area represent various types of shallow-water sedimentation environments (including tidal, lagoon, and barrier zones) that developed in the Carpathian Foreland area on the borderline between the Late Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous. The sedimentation environment of the Marly-Shellbed Series dated to the Berriasian can be described as extremely shallow-water, with lagoon facies and under the influence of brackish environments. The sediments of the last two series of the Lower Cretaceous (i.e. the Mudstone-Limestone and Upper Shellbed-Oolite Series) represent the shallow-marine facies associated with marine transgression that took place during the Valanginian. The processes that have had the greatest impact on the current character and preservation of the rock series under study can be pinpointed and a comprehensive characterisation of these formations can be undertaken thanks to the depositional history of the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous sedimentary basin of the Carpathian Foreland presented herein, the macroscopic examination of the available core material, the microfacial and micropalaeontological analysis of individual lithostratigraphic units, and the interpretation of the seismic image.

Paleodolina Szczurowej–Wojnicza, stanowiąca jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych elementów budowy strukturalnej obszaru badań, wyerodowana została w utworach węglanowych kredy i jury. W okresie neogenu paleodolina ta wypełniona została miąższą serią osadów klastycznych należących do formacji skawińskiej. Przeprowadzona obecnie interpretacja obrazu sejsmicznego pozwoliła na możliwie szczegółowe rozpoznanie rozprzestrzenienia i układu strukturalnego utworów poszczególnych kompleksów litostratygraficznych w badanym rejonie. Przypuszczalnie w wyniku pogrążania centralnej części rowu tektonicznego Wojnicza doszło do przechylenia w kierunku SW warstw skalnych budujących strefę krawędziową paleorynny, co z kolei doprowadziło do zainicjowania ruchów masowych. Ponadto zaobserwowano wpływ morfologii powierzchni stropowej serii zlepieńcowo-olistostromowej na układ strukturalny zalegających powyżej utworów formacji skawińskiej, wynikający z nierównomiernego stopnia kompakcji osadów drobnoklastycznych.

The article discusses the seismic characteristics of the olistostrome deposits from the Szczurowa–Wojnicz paleovalley area based on the interpretation of combined 3D and 2D seismic data. The study area is characterized by a complex geology and poor drilling exploration, as only few wells have drilled through the full profile of the autochthonous Miocene deposits. The Szczurowa–Wojnicz paleovalley, which is one of the most characteristic elements of the geological framework of the research area, was formed by erosion of Cretaceous and Jurassic carbonate formations. In the Neogene period, the paleovalley was filled with a thick series of clastic sediments belonging to the Skawina Formation. In the basement of this formation, a set of characteristic coarse-clastic sediments of highly differentiated thickness, called the conglomerate-olistostrome series, was identified. The presence of conglomerate and olistostrome deposits (carbonate breccia) described in the core material from the Basowy-1 well was the background for undertaking the present study. The conducted research allowed for the most detailed recognition of the distribution and structural arrangement of lithostratigraphic complexes in the interpreted region. The analysis of seismic attributes indicates lithological differentiation of the conglomerate-olistostrome series, most likely resulting from overlapping conglomerates and carbonate breccias with fine clastic sedimentary rocks. It can be assumed that, at least partially in the edge zones of the paleovalley, the lateral contact between the Jurassic and Miocene sediments is tectonic, related to the reactivation of dislocations. Presumably, as a result of subsidence of the central part of the Wojnicz halfgraben, there was a tilt of the sediments forming the edge zone of the paleovalley toward SW direction, which in turn led to the initiation of mass movements. Moreover, the morphology of the top surface of the conglomerate-olistostrome series affected the structural configuration of the overlying deposits belonging to the Skawina Formation, which may be explained by the uneven compaction degree of fine-clastic sediments.

Głównym celem artykułu jest odtworzenie szczegółów budowy strukturalnej utworów triasu i paleozoiku centralnej części przedgórza Karpat na podstawie interpretacji nowych materiałów sejsmicznych 3D. W ramach interpretacji wykonano analizę atrybutów sejsmicznych, wśród których najbardziej pomocne były: Time gain, Relative acoustic impedance, First derivative, Dominant frequency oraz Instantaneous bandwidth.

The main purpose of the article was to reconstruct the structural details of the Triassic and Palaeozoic formations of the central part of the Carpathian Foreland based on interpretation of new 3D seismic data. The interpretation included the analysis of seismic attributes, among them Time Gain, Relative acoustic impedance, First derivative, Dominant frequency and Instantaneous bandwidth were the most useful. Previous knowledge on the geological structure of the Palaeozoic complex in this area was derived mainly from the interpretation of 2D seismic sections, regional concepts and data from the only deep well drilled in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The results of the seismic image analysis show that the Jurassic sub-surface is composed of a number of tectonic blocks of various sizes, separated by dislocation zones. Most of them are tilted blocks which are the remnants of the Caledonian-Variscan tectonic system. Palaeozoic sediments with clearly arranged continuous seismic reflectors strongly contrast in the seismic image with the complex of anchimetamorphic rocks of the uppermost Ediacaran characterized by disarranged, homogeneous record. Clastic formations of the Lower Triassic fill primarily the deeper parts of the tectonic half-grabens. Based on the seismic image analysis, the complex is divided into two series: the lower one, with significantly lower amplitude values and noticeably lower continuity of seismic reflectors and the upper one with diversified dynamics and greater continuity of reflectors. The highest analyzed complex is the carbonate formation of Roetian and Muschelkalk, characterized by high amplitude values and high continuity of reflectors so that it can be easily identified on seismic sections. The analysis carried out with the use of seismic attributes allowed to determine the seismic characteristics of individual lithostratigraphic complexes of the Triassic and Palaeozoic formations and provided more detailed information on the geological structure of the research area.

There are numerous conventional fields of natural gas in the Carpathian Foredeep, and there is also evidence to suggest that unconventional gas accumulations may occur in this region. The different seismic signatures of these geological forms, the small scale of amplitude variation, and the large amount of data make the process of geological interpretation extremely time consuming. Moreover, the dispersed nature of information in a large block of seismic data increasingly requires automatic, self-learning cognitive processes. Recent developments with Machine Learning have added new capabilities to seismic interpretation, especially to multi-attribute seismic analysis. Each case requires a proper selection of attributes. In this paper, the Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix method is presented and its two texture attributes: Energy and Entropy. Haralick’s two texture parameters were applied to an advanced interpretation of the interval of Miocene deposits in order to discover the subtle geological features hidden between the seismic traces. As a result, a submarine-slope channel system was delineated leading to the discovery of unknown earlier relationships between gas boreholes and the geological environment. The Miocene deposits filling the Carpathian Foredeep, due to their lithological and facies diversity, provide excellent conditions for testing and implementing Machine Learning techniques. The presented texture attributes are the desired input components for self-learning systems for seismic facies classification.

An attempt was made to describe the quality of the stacked seismic data semi-quantitatively with respect to the spacing of shot and receiver lines. The methods used included: signal-to-noise ratio calculation, seismic-to-well tie accuracy, wavelet extraction effectiveness and reliability of semi-automated interpretation of seismic attributes. This study was focused on the Ordovician-Silurian interval of the Lublin Basin, Poland, as it was considered as a main target for the exploration of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits. Our results reconfirm the obvious dependency between the density of the acquisition parameters and data quality. However, we also discovered that the seismic data quality is less affected by the shot line spacing than by comparable receiver line spacing. We attributed this issue to the fact of the higher irregularity of the shot points than receiver points, imposed by the terrain accessibility. We have also proven that the regularity of receiver and shot point distribution is crucial for the reliable interpretation of structural seismic attributes, since these were found to be highly sensitive to the acquisition geometry.

Chicxulub crater formed~66 Ma ago by an asteroid impact on the Yucatan platform in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The crater has a ~ 200 km rim diameter and has been covered by carbonate sediments up to ~ 1.1 km thick in the central zone. Previous studies have identifed the structure and major crater units through geophysical models from seismic refection and potential feld data, classifed as the central uplift, terrace zone, outer and inner ring fault zones and impactite deposits. Impact produced a deep excavation cavity, with fragmentation and ejection of large volumes of crustal target rocks. Understanding the pre-existing structures, impact-induced deformation and post-impact processes requires high-resolution images of the crater and target zone. For this study, we use complex trace attributes of instantaneous phase, frequency, envelope amplitude and similarity, in an E-W seismic refection profle crossing the crater in the marine sector. Geophysical logs and borehole lithological columns from the on-land drilling projects are used to constrain the petrophysical analysis. Seismic attributes aid to characterize the radial fault zones and physical property contrasts, revealing asymmetries in the crater structure. The refector packages in the post-impact sediments and target Cretaceous sequence are identifed in the frequency and phase attributes. The bottom crater refectors, with the basal sediments flling the crater foor topography, are enhanced with the envelope amplitude attribute. A set of high-amplitude refectors is shown in the similarity attribute, in which the refector geometry is delineated on the target carbonate sequence. The ofsets in the high-amplitude refectors between the eastern and western sectors are possibly associated to target pre-impact asymmetries, impact deformation and efects of central crater collapse.

Subsurface parameter reconstruction using full waveform inversion is highly nonlinear with nonunique solutions. When the initial model with high precision is missing, the cycle skipping problem will be encountered, especially for the strong scattering media like salt structures. In order to adapt to the inversion of strong scattering media, direct envelope inversion (DEI) using directly the envelope Fréchet derivatives was proposed to avoid the weakly nonlinear assumption for the model updating. In the original DEI method, the envelope polarity is not considered. To further improve the efectiveness of DEI, signed envelope inversion with polarity detection can be used. In this work, we develop a new polarity detection technique on the basis of seismic attributes, which can provide more accurate polarity information for the seismic envelope. Based on the above technique, the new multi-scale signed DEI method is proposed. The new technique is applied to the SEG/EAGE salt model. The numerical examples verifed the efectiveness of this method.

The main aim of the article is to determine the possibility of a more detailed seismic interpretation in the autochthonous Miocene formations on the example of a 3D seismic survey from the Carpathian Foredeep area, based on the comprehensive analysis of well logs. The seismic survey located in the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep was selected for the study. This zone is characterized by the presence of natural gas accumulation in various types of traps. Four boreholes in which formation tests were conducted within the Miocene sediments were selected for the detailed interpretation of the well logs. An important element of the study was the seismic-to-well tie based on available measurements of vertical seismic profiling. The quantitative interpretation of well data was the basis for the distinction of several lithofacial complexes of diverse lithology, reservoir parameters, or the type of reservoir media saturation in the profile of each of the analysed wells. Water and hydrocarbon saturations were estimated based on Montaron’s theory. With the defined seismic signature, it was possible to interpret seismic horizons away from the wells. Selected seismic attributes were used during the interpretation and analysis of the seismic image. There was a fairly high correlation between the well logs interpretation and the seismic record. Major lithological changes, thicker claystone interbeds within mudstone, or heterolithic deposits, as well as zones of significant changes in reservoir properties and the type of reservoir media saturation can be interpreted in the seismic image. In contrast, mudstone or heterolithic complexes of a large thickness (about hundreds of meters) in the seismic image are usually characterized by a monotonous low amplitude record and a significantly smaller continuity of reflections. The zones saturated with gas or gas and brine, documented in the analysed wells by the results of formation tests, usually can be identified on the basis of the seismic record. Due to the large variation of lithology and a substantial variability of individual parameters, it is not possible to reliably indicate in the seismic data which of the analysed objects are saturated with natural gas, and which with gas and brine. The results of well logs and integrated seismic interpretation allowed to obtain the complete picture of the Miocene siliciclastic formations diversity in the studied region, as well as a more accurate determination of reservoir properties and reservoir fluid saturation. The series of fine-grained sediments (mainly mudstone or heterolithic) in the lower part of the Miocene profile, within which several prospects were interpreted, was determined as the most interesting for hydrocarbon exploration.

Ilościowa interpretacja danych geofizyki wiertniczej stanowiła podstawę do wyodrębnienia w profilu każdego z analizowanych otworów szeregu kompleksów facjalnych, o zróżnicowanej litologii, parametrach zbiornikowych czy też rodzaju nasycenia mediami złożowymi.

This article presents the possibilities of using in the seismic interpretation process VSP-CDP transformation (the vertical seismic profiling–common depth point) calculated for longitudinal waves of VSP offset shot points for seismic interpretation. The Lower Palaeozoic (Cambrian-Silurian) complex was a main aim of interpretation. The total thickness of this complex is over 2400 m. The analyzed Lower Palaeozoic complex is dominated by silicoclastic sediments with a few carbonate rock layers. The analysis, based on selected seismic attributes, was performed to compare the seismic image obtained in the 3D seismic and the VSP-CDP transformations for the W-1 well. The article discusses the analysis of following attributes: RMS Amplitude, First derivative, Cosine of phase, Iso-frequency component, Instantaneous bandwidth, Envelope, Relative acoustic impedance. The application of the VSPCDP transformation allowed to obtain much higher vertical resolution of the image, as well as clearly visible lithological variation of some formations. On the other hand, the interpretation, based on selected seismic attributes, enabled a detailed lithofacial recognition of the analyzed Lower Paleozoic deposits as well as seismic documentation of elements such as dislocations and additional new horizons with a higher carbonate content.
