In industrial practice, corrugated board quality is assessed using a set of mechanical tests that capture different aspects of structural response: edgewise crushing resistance (ECT), bending stiffness in MD/CD directions (BNT), transverse shear performance in MD/CD (TST), and shear-related deformation sensitivity associated with structural damage (SST). The lack of a single, universal scalar indicator makes it difficult to compare products from different manufacturers and to objectively evaluate the efficiency of designs with different ply numbers (e.g., single-wall vs double-wall boards). This study introduces a Corrugated Quality Index (CQI), which integrates ECT, BNT, TST, and SST results into a single metric suitable for material ranking and benchmarking. The core concept relies on normalizing all mechanical outcomes with respect to the total basis weight, so that CQI reflects mechanical efficiency “per unit material” rather than merely absolute performance, enabling fair comparisons between lighter and heavier grades. Directional effects (MD/CD) are incorporated through geometric aggregation and an explicit penalization of excessive anisotropy. To allow cross-company evaluation without relying on unknown reference values, the proposed framework employs logarithmic z-score scaling computed within the benchmarking dataset. Furthermore, an SST-based damage penalty is introduced, as reduced SST values are commonly associated with creasing-induced degradation and the initiation of flute delamination, which undermines interlayer cooperation. The index can be extended with an economic component by incorporating unit cost normalized by basis weight. The proposed methodology provides a practical and scientifically consistent tool for corrugated board benchmarking, supporting material selection with respect to load capacity, structural stability, and cost-effectiveness as a transparent tool for preliminary design and comparative studies of new cores in corrugated bords.

his study investigates the influence of constitutive model parameters on both the global and local response of reinforced concrete beams. Advanced numerical simulations require appropriate material models to represent the specimen behaviour, so this research compares simplified engineering procedures with the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model. A single representative specimen was analysed using a high-resolution Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system to provide dense experimental data for precise calibration. The investigation focuses on identifying the specific tension stiffening description that best reflects the fracture kinematics recorded by the optical system. Results indicate that the strain-dependent approach (specifically the Massicotte model) offers superior consistency with experimental crack patterns and load-deflection curves. In contrast, models based on fracture energy exhibited unphysical blurring of damage zones and poorer crack localization. The study concludes that broad validation extending beyond global load-deflection curves, utilizing local displacement fields from DIC, is essential for an objective assessment of numerical model quality and the optimization of concrete structure design.

Sandwich plates with corrugated cores represent an important class of lightweight structural systems used in packaging, building envelopes, transport structures and engineered panels. The mechanical response of such systems is strongly influenced by the geometry of the periodic core, which governs transverse shear deformation and, consequently, the effective shear stiffness of the plate. While classical shear correction factors are well established for flat sandwich cores, no unified analytical framework exists for corrugated cores of arbitrary shape. This short contribution presents a concise mathematical formulation for the evaluation of the shear correction factor ks in sandwich plates with periodic corrugated cores of various geometries, including sinusoidal, trapezoidal, semicircular, elliptical and triangular waveforms. The formulation is based on energetic equivalence between the true cross-sectional shear strain energy and the corresponding Timoshenko plate idealization. The shear-stress field is reconstructed using a generalized geometric description of the corrugation profile and integrated over one periodic cell. The proposed framework highlights how the corrugation shape directly influences the shear-transfer mechanism through the first moment of area and the effective material width distribution. Without focusing on numerical optimization or detailed finite element validation, the paper emphasizes the mathematical structure of ks and its geometric sensitivity. The derived expressions provide compact analytical insight into the role of corrugation shape and may serve as a transparent tool for preliminary design and comparative studies of new cores in corrugated bords.
