Isothermal quenching of austempering cast iron (ADI) castings requires that, after austenitization the casting must be rapidly cooled to the temperature of isothermal austenite decomposition. The cooling rate throughout the entire volume of the heat-treated product must be high enough to prevent pearlitic transformation. At the same time, the temperature of the cooled surface must not decrease below the martensitic transformation start temperature Ms. The cooling rate of the casting surface is determined by factors such as the temperature difference between the surface of the cooled casting and the cooling medium, the thermal conductivity of cast iron, the heat transfer coefficient, and the wall thickness of the treated casting. In the case of cooling with water mist, the heat transfer coefficient depends on the temperature of the cooled surface. To control the cooling process of castings using water mist, information about this relationship for the temperature range of 200–800°C is needed. Available scientific publications on this subject contain contradictory data. Therefore, a measuring station was built with the ability to set the temperature of the cooled surface. The station includes a measuring system that allows the measurement of the heat flux flowing from the heating element into the environment. The result of the research is the measurement of the relationship between the temperature of the cooled surface and the heat transfer coefficient. The values obtained will be used in the future to build a numerical model of ADI castings heat treatment. This work may contribute to the future replacement of salt baths (currently used for fast cooling and austempering) with water mist spraying. In this case, the low-temperature operation of austenite decomposition can be performed without the use of salt a bath.

The results of experimental investigations of boiling heat transfer for low-GWP refrigerants in a compact shell-and-tube heat exchanger are presented. Boiling occurred in the confined shell-side space on the outer surfaces of horizontally oriented tubes, which were internally heated with hot water. The experiments were performed for four working fluids: R1234ze, R1234yf, R134a, and HFE7100. Thermal performance characteristics of the exchanger were determined, with particular emphasis on boiling heat transfer. An exponential relationship between the heat transfer coefficient and the applied surface heat flux was observed under confined boiling conditions. An empirical correlation was developed to predict the boiling heat transfer coefficient in the confined space for refrigerants. The proposed correlation enables estimation of the boiling heat transfer coefficient on horizontal tube surfaces with an accuracy of ±25%. The present experimental results were compared with data reported by other authors.

Heat losses through window profiles constitute a significant part of heat losses in a building. For this reason, a number of studies are taken to improve their thermal properties. This work focuses on the possibilities of improving the thermal properties of an aluminum window profiles with an opening sash. The analyses carried out show that the greatest reduction in heat losses through the profile, i.e. the greatest reduction in the heat transfer coefficient of the profile, is possible through the use of isolators (thermal insulation inserts) and low surface emissivity. Other methods, such as dividing the cavities into smaller ones, have a smaller effect on this coefficient, but are characterized by higher efficiency measured by the amount of material used.
The article presents a method for online monitoring of thermal stress and heat transfer coefficient on the inner surface of a thick-walled cylindrical element using two separate applications. Both applications are based on the inverse heat conduction problem and use the control volume method. The first one allows the determination of thermal stresses based on measuring the wall temperature at a single point near the inner surface. This software is suitable for one-dimensional heat transfer, i.e. in a radial direction. The second application allows the heat transfer coefficient on the inner surface to be determined based on temperature measurements at six spatially distributed points. Knowledge of the heat transfer coefficient on the inner surface allows the stress concentration factor to be determined for elements weakened by an opening. This can be used to determine the optimum heating or cooling rates for pressure elements or to determine the thermal stresses in elements weakened by an opening. This method is suitable for heat transfer cases in the radial, longitudinal and circumferential directions. The correct operation of both original applications has been tested on a laboratory stand, where there was a sudden change in the working fluid temperature in a steam header from 16.8°C to 142.5°C. At the beginning of the temperature change, the thermal stresses on the header inner surface reached a maximum value of -195.8 MPa, and the heat transfer coefficient was approximately 5000 W/(m²K). Then, the thermal stresses began to decrease, and the heat transfer coefficient began to increase.
In contemporary literature, there are not many analyses taking into account changing heat transfer coefficients over the years and examining and comparing the variability of insulation thickness in different thermal standards. The article presents the evolution of energy demand taking into account the requirements of the Green Deal. The analysis was carried out using two materials, showing how their thickness changed in relation to the evolving energy requirements. The research was illustrated with an example of thermal modernization for a building in specific time periods. The analysis was carried out using a numerical program, comparing warming variants for individual years using the Index of annual primary energy demand. Following the requirements contained in the EPDB directive, a comprehensive reduction of the penetration coefficients for building partitions was proposed and requirements for the mandatory use of mechanical ventilation and photovoltaics were introduced.

This paper deals with the use of degradable waste materials to produce insulating materials using 3D printing. The purpose of the study was to experimentally determine the effect of using 3D printing with a Voronoi diagram to fabricate the complex in ternal structure of innovative cellular composites with natural fill ers on their thermal properties. Samples with different number of layers (single, double, triple layers for 40 mm thick composites), composite thickness (40 and 100 mm) and composition – colored resins – transparent, black, gray, metallized as well as soybean oil based gray and gray with natural fibers – were used for the study. The role of natural fillers was played by glycerin and biomass ash – in a weight ratio of 5%. The finished materials were tested and the values of thermal resistance and heat transfer coefficient were determined. The authors pointed out that the best thermal properties among the tested materials stood out for the sample made of soybean oil-based resin with a thickness of 100 mm, for which the value of the heat transfer coefficient was 0.223 W/(m2·K). Biodegradable components have also been shown to have great poten tial as materials for producing thermal insulation using 3D print ing technology. As a thermal insulation material for 3D printing technology, biodegradable components have great potential.
The heat transfer measurements were conducted during pool boiling of water on surfaces with microchannels. Parallel grooves were made on a copper surface with widths ranging from 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm at intervals of 0.1 mm. The inclination angle of the grooves to the horizontal was set at 30° and 60°, and the depth of the microchannel grooves was 0.3 mm. The achieved heat flux ranged from 25 kW/m² to 1730 kW/m², and the heat transfer coefficients ranged from 12 kW/(m²K) to 475 kW/(m²K). The influence of geometric parameters such as width, inclination angle of the microchannel, surface extension, and Bond number on heat exchange efficiency was examined. A nearly sixfold increase in α (heat transfer coefficient) and a twofold increase in critical heat flux were observed compared to a smooth surface.
The paper presents a modified in-house model for calculating heat transfer coefficients during flow condensation, which can be applied to a variety of working fluids, but natural refrigerants in particular, at full range thermodynamic parameters with a particular focus on increased saturation pressure. The modified model is based on a strong physical basis, namely the hypothesis of analogy between the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in two-phase flow. The model verification is based on a consolidated database that consists of 1286 data points for 7 natural refrigerants and covers the reduced pressure range (the ratio of critical pressure and saturation pressure) from 0.1 to 0.8 for different mass velocities and diameters. The new version of the in-house model, developed earlier by Mikielewicz, was compared with 4 other mathematical models widely recommended for engineering calculations and obtained the best consistency results. The value of the mean absolute percentage error was 28.13% for the modified model, the best result among the scrutinised methods.
For the time being, there is a growing endeavor towards supporting energy-saving technologies, most significantly heat exchanger systems, by improving the performance of the heat transfer process. The study model employed is a double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHEX), which is served in an actual project at the Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) unit of the State Company for Petrochemical Industries in Basra, Iraq. The prominent goals of this study are to gain a deeper comprehension of the exchanger's performance under advanced operating conditions and to maximize the efficiency of heat transfer between the two fluids in the DPHEX system. The current work applies a distinctive connection of SOLIDWORKS with ANSYS FLUENT software to conduct a simulation design and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of a heat transfer system in DPHEX. Thermal analysis of exchangers is challenging since many parameters, such as the geometry of the heat exchangers and the varying flow regimes influence the overall heat transfer coefficient. As a result, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was employed to investigate the optimal design and operating conditions of DPHEX, using a COM server to provide flexible communication between the MATLAB GA toolbox and Aspen HYSYS® software. The preliminary findings from ANSYS FLUENT simulations and GA optimizations demonstrated significant improvements. Specifically, the heat transfer rate rose by 24% and 28%, respectively, also there made up an elevate in the overall heat transfer coefficient to 675 W/m²·K and 751 W/m²·K, correspondingly, from 440 W/m²·K in the as-built heat exchanger. Notably, these results were observed while the outgoing temperature of the chilled ethylene gas was at 49℃, and the efficiency accounted for 87.7%. The study exhibited the feasibility of reducing the cooling water quantity from the traditional mass flow rate of 73,860 kg/hr to 50,400 kg/hr while maintaining a reasonable efficiency of 83% at the LDPE unit. These results were achieved with the leaving temperature of ethylene gas and cooling water set at 50℃ and 34℃, respectively. Hence, minimizing water consumption in heat exchangers brings about environmental, economic, and operational advantages. Generally, the study results have reinforced the importance of simulation tools and their direct contribution to achieving efficient and eco-friendly energy systems.
In the paper, a description of the analysis of parameter variability in the studied process is presented, with a focus on the selection of measurement instrument class, using the example of a ventilation system where heat recovery takes place. Additionally, a methodology for determining measurement errors in calculating the heat transfer coefficient from the heat balance equations is provided.

This study presents the experimental research data on the local heat transfer coefficient during refrigerant expansion evaporation in horizontal pipe minichannel. Heat exchange took place between the heated channel wall and the working fluid flowing inside (R134a and R404A). AISI 316 stainless steel pipe minichannels with an internal diameter in the range of di = 0.64 - 2.30 mm were used. The so-called minichannels are widely used to build miniature heat exchangers. Tests carried out in the range of mass flux density G = 350 - 1400 kg/(m2s) and heat flux density reaching q = 90 kW/m2 allowed to observe the occurrence of the flashing phenomenon, not observed in conventional channels. It has been shown that in the zone covered by the flashing phenomenon, the heat exchange conditions deteriorate, and the value of the local heat transfer coefficient in this zone may drop by up to 50%.

Solar air heater is regarded as the most common and popular solar thermal system and has a wide range of applications, from residential to industrial. Solar air heater is not viable because of the low convective heat transfer coefficient at the absorber plate which contributes to decreasing the thermal efficiency. Artificial coarseness on the plain surface is the most effective method to enhance heat transfer with a moderate rate of friction factor of flowing air in the design of solar air heater duct. The different parameters and different artificial coarseness are responsible to alter the flow structure and heat transfer rate. Over the years different artificial roughness and how its geometry affects the performance of solar air heater have been thoroughly studied. Various investigators report the correlations between heat transfer and friction factors. In the present study, a comparison of several artificial coarseness geometries and methods with a view to enhancing the performance of solar air heater has been made. A brief outline has also been presented for future research.
Purpose: To provide a comprehensive review of additive manufacturing use in heat transfer improvement and to carry out the economic feasibility of additive manufacturing compared to conventional manufacturing. Heat transfer improvement is particularly interesting for different industrial sectors due to its economic, practical, and environmental benefits. Three heat transfer improvement techniques are used: active, passive, and compound. Design/methodology/approach: According to numerous studies on heat transfer enhancement devices, most configurations with strong heat transfer performance are geometrically complex. Thus, those configurations cannot be easily manufactured using conventional manufacturing. With additive manufacturing, almost any configuration can be manufactured, with the added benefit that the produced parts’ surface characteristics can enhance heat transfer. It can, however, lead to a significant pressure drop increase that will reduce the overall performance. In the given article, a comparison of the capital cost of a 100 MW parabolic trough power plant has been carried out, considering two types of solar receivers; the first is manufactured using conventional methods, and the second uses additive manufacturing. The heat transfer of the new receiver configuration is investigated using computational fluid dynamics through ANYS Fluent. Findings: Although the cost of additive manufacturing machines and materials is high compared to conventional manufacturing, the outcome revealed that the gain in efficiency when using additive-manufactured receivers leads to a reduction in the number of receiver tubes and the number of solar collectors needed in the solar field It implies a considerable reduction of parabolic trough collector plant capital cost, which is 20.7%. It can, therefore, be concluded that, even if initial setup expenses are higher, additive manufacturing could be more cost- effective than traditional manufacturing. Practical implications: With the reduction of the parabolic trough collector plant capital cost, the levelized cost of electricity will eventually be reduced, which will play a role in increasing the use of solar thermal energy. Originality/value: No review studies discuss the manufacturing potential and cost- effectiveness potential of additive manufacturing when producing heat transfer improvement equipment, especially when producing long pieces. In addition, the paper uses a novel receiver configuration to investigate the economic aspect.
The heat transfer coefficient during the pool boiling on the outside of a horizontal tube can be predicted by correlations. Our choice was based on ten correlations known from the literature. The experimental data were recovered from the recent work, for different fluids used. An evaluation was made of agreement between each of the correlations and the experimental data. The results of the present study firstly showed a good reliability for the correlations of untsov [10], Stephan and Abdeslam [11] with deviations of 20% and 27%, respectively. Also, the results revealed acceptable agreements for the correlations of Kruzhlin [6], Mc Nelly [7] and Touhami [15] with deviations of 26%, 29% and 29% respectively. The remaining correlations showed very high deviations from the experimental data. Finally, improvements have been made in the correlations of Shekriladze [12] and Mostinski [9], and a new correlation was proposed giving convincing results.
This study utilized two double tube-type heat exchangers. The first exchanger employed a smooth inner tube, while the second one utilized a twisted inner tube. The shell was constructed of plastic (PVC), while the tube was made of copper with a length of 1000 mm, an outer diameter of 62.24 mm, a smooth tube inner diameter of 14.2 mm, and an equivalent diameter of 11.8 mm for the twisted tube. To minimize heat loss, the shell was insulated externally with a thermal insulator. A flow rate of 3 liters per minute of hot water was passed through a ring-shaped tunnel, with an inlet temperature of 63 °C, to enhance the heat exchanger's performance. The experimental results of the two heat exchangers (smooth and twisted inner tubes) were compared, and the use of water as the primary fluid led to improved performance. The twisted inner tube-type heat exchanger achieved a maximum efficiency of 0.33 at a volumetric flow rate of 5 liters per minute, while the maximum improvement in effectiveness was 65.71% at a volume flow rate of 3 liters per minute in the twisted inner tube-type heat exchanger.

W badaniach wykorzystano dwa dwururowe wymienniki ciepła.
Windows are an essential part of building envelopes since they enhance the appearance of the building, allow daylight and solar heat to come in, and allow people to observe outside. However, conventional windows tend to have poor U-values, which cause significant heat losses during the winter season and undesired heat gain in summer. Modern glazing technologies are therefore required to improve thermal resistance and comfort of the occupants, whilst mitigating the energy consumption of buildings. In the present work, a comprehensive review of the numerical investigations of the thermal properties of window systems and glazed buildings partitions is presented. However, the proposed models to predict the thermal performance most often concern only specific cases of window systems related to geometry and used material solutions, focused on specific physical processes, thus they contain a lot of simplifications, such as omitting the influence of radiation, temperature changes or velocity profiles.

Istotnymi elementami budynków są okna, które wpływają na ich wygląd, umożliwiają dostęp światła dziennego i ciepła pochodzącego z promieniowania słonecznego, a także pozwalają na obserwowanie otoczenia. Jednakże w porównaniu do pozostałych przegród budowlanych konwencjonalne okna charakteryzują się zwykle gorszymi wartościami współczynnika przenikania ciepła U, generując znaczne straty ciepła w sezonie zimowym i niepożądane zyski ciepła w lecie.
This publication is provided with the author’s suggestions regarding modification of the basic criterion – heat transfer coefficient. According to the author, the basic criterion of building thermal protection should be extended in such a manner that it will be simple and easy to evaluate a building’s capacity to recover thermal energy accumulated in the wall structure.
