Despite the growing awareness of the issue of pedestrian wind comfort in urban areas, there is still little standardization in evaluating it. This paper presents the results of an extensive campaign comprising field measurements, surveys with the local population, and wind tunnel tests aimed at making the first step towards such a goal. The field measurements and surveys are conducted during different seasons (winter, spring, summer) at a particularly windy site in the city center of Warsaw, Poland, in the vicinity of several tall buildings. The total number of respondents who took part in the survey was 3200. The analyzed area is then recreated in a model scale and tested at a wind tunnel facility. The results obtained are processed according to two existing criteria sets and are compared with field studies to provide an insight into some of the main factors contributing to pedestrian wind comfort: wind speed and the nature of the wind, air temperature, and pedestrian activity. The conclusions show that the impact of air temperature and wind gustiness on pedestrian wind comfort seems larger than previously envisaged. Moreover, the research shows that low wind sensation occurs at a low unsteady wind speed of around 3 m/s. The results of the research campaign provide a better understanding of pedestrian wind comfort in the cities and support improved planning and design practices in urban environments.

The paper presents the characteristics of the sound field in two pairs of coupled reverberation rooms, designed in accordance with International Organization for Standardization [ISO] (2021c). The analyses are based on the results of the following studies. Firstly, the acoustic airborne sound insulation of selected test samples was measured in the reverberation rooms without using any sound diffusing nor sound absorbing elements. In the second step, the tests were repeated successively with an increasing number of diffusers installed in the rooms. The last stage of the research involved measurements with additional absorbers mounted in the rooms. The results show that although the geometry and construction of the reverberation rooms are in line with the standard guidelines, in most situations it was necessary to use diffusing and absorbing elements to improve the acoustic field in the rooms. Such elements, however, are very undesirable as they significantly limit the usable space of the rooms, making it more difficult to assemble samples and distribute sources and measurement points in the measurement space. Later in the article, the authors prove that even using typically available design tools, i.e., 1st and 2nd Bonello criterions, numerical simulations with the image-source method and the finite element method, or more advanced research methods, such as measurements using scaled samples, it seems impossible to prevent at the design stage the future necessity of using additional diffusing and absorbing elements in the reverberation rooms. Only via verification by measurements performed in the completed rooms provides the assessment if such additional elements are required.

In this article, an analysis of the noise problem generated during the use of parking platforms located in the underground garage of a multi-family residential building is presented. Based on in-situ studies, it has been shown how significant the exceedance of permissible sound levels can be in protected rooms during the operation of improperly acoustically secured parking platforms. Repeat measurements taken after implementing of noise protection demonstrated that the potential to solve the issue of noise transmission from the platforms to residential units after their installation is very limited and ineffective if the building's structural design did not consider appropriate protections at design stage. The article discusses measurement procedures, obtained results, and the extent to which standards were exceeded, and proposes possible construction and structural solutions that should reduce the risk of parking platform noise being audible in acoustically protected rooms, such as living spaces.

This paper discusses the design, realization and acoustical performance of a sound-absorbing auditorium chairs intended for a concert hall with 350 seats, opened in 2022 at the Music School in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. Several construction aspects were covered: the selection of foam for the seat and upholstery fabric based on measurements of air flow resistance, as well as the influence of the fabric lamination process on the acoustic properties of the seats. The construction of the chair and the acoustic parameters of the completed seats installed in the auditorium were also described. Finally, the article described how we managed to measure the absorption coefficient of occupied seats within the constraints of human contact related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The article presents an idea how to increase the room acoustic absorption without significantly interfering with its appearance and architectural character. Based on scale model tests, analytical calculations and computer simulations, it has been shown that a noticeable reduction of room reverberation time and improvement of speech transmission index can be achieved by installing additional absorbing systems on selected furniture surfaces. By selecting the appropriate design and location of such systems, the functionality and appearance of the modified furniture can be maintained.

In this paper, the authors present an engineering method to identify the transmission paths of structure-borne sounds. The method is based on the use of a standardised impact sound source with an insulation case. The advantage of this approach is the possibility of obtaining repeatable results because the method allows the separation of structure-borne and airborne sounds; the latter do not interrupt the measurement even in the case of loose connections or elements of low acoustic insulation. The research on the verification of the method was performed on the façade of the Cracow Philharmonic building; the main structure-borne sound transmission paths were determined successfully. Knowledge of the sound transmission paths allows the subsequent design of efficient vibroacoustic protection.
