This study describes the abundant occurrence of brucite in the serpentinite quarry at Naslawice near Sobótka, Lower Silesia. The mineral appears mainly as fibrous crystals, resembling asbestos. Raman micro-spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) and M Kotowski X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses confirmed that the fibrous aggregates are composed of brucite (known as nemalite), enriched in iron. Brucite is accompanied by minor amounts of hydrotalcite, calcite and serpentine-group minerals. The formation of brucite is associated with low-temperature hydrothermal and supergene processes, including serpentinitization and dolerite alteration. The Naslawice serpentinite mine currently represents the largest known brucite occurrence in Poland, although it has no economic significance.
Soil stabilization is a commonly used method of improving subgrade properties in road construction. Despite many years of using this technology, intensive research continues to be conducted to enhance the effectiveness of stabilization processes. One approach used to improve the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of stabilized soils is the incorporation of dispersed reinforcement. This study focuses on investigating the effect of polypropylene fibers on the effectiveness of cement-stabilized soil improvement as a function of time. For the study, samples were prepared based on two mixtures containing 4% cement. The first did not include any fibers, while the second contained 0.5% fibers. Six series of samples were prepared for each mixture, which were then subjected to uniaxial compression tests after 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of the curing process. Based on the collected data, an analysis was performed to examine the change in Effectiveness of Fiber Improvement (EFI) over time. The study of the test results showed that in the initial phase of curing, the effectiveness of fiber enhancement reached 165.9%, then gradually decreased over time to about 119.9%. Furthermore, the study also presented the significant impact of fibers on the E50 deformation modulus value, as well as the relationship between this parameter and the unconfined compressive strength of stabilized soil. Based on the results obtained, the mechanisms of soil improvement and their impact on the change in effectiveness over time were described. The presented results and conclusions facilitate a deeper understanding of the improvement of soil stabilized with polypropylene fibers.
The environmental impact of Portland cement production, particularly its high carbon emissions, has raised significant concerns in the construction sector. Geopolymer concrete offers a more sustainable alternative, but research on self-compacting geopolymer concrete (SCGC) reinforced with fibers remains limited compared to SCGC without fibers. To fill this gap, this study conducted an in-depth literature review using the Publish or Perish application with Scopus data and VOS-viewer software for bibliometric analysis. The resulting bibliometric map reveals the network of keyword connections, shedding light on emerging trends and key focus areas in SCGC research. This review not only explores the fresh and mechanical properties of SCGC with fiber variations but also provides insights that can direct future studies in this field. The aim is to encourage further research and innovation, contributing to the development of more efficient and sustainable SCGC with fiber reinforcement in construction practices.
Innovative approaches in urban development should address all aspects, including waste management, with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental protection. Various cementitious composites can be considered a viable medium that allows waste storage. In this study, the effect of the polyester-vinyl fiber addition on the strength and microstructural properties of cement mortars was investigated to determine the optimal fiber content. The fibers were added to the composite at 1%, 2% and 4% by weight of the cement mortar mix. The fibers used were fine fraction (0–1 mm) and coarse fraction (1–4 mm). The material microstructures, particularly in relation to the properties of the fiber-cement matrix interface for the selected mortar, were then characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that, aside from the reference sample, the mortars containing 1% fibers of both the fine and coarse fractions had the highest compressive strength. In relation to the reference mix, the sample with 2% fine fraction polyester-vinyl fibers and the sample with 1% coarse fraction fibers achieved the best flexural strength, lower than the reference sample only by about 4%. The worst performance in each test was achieved by mortars containing 4% fibers. The analysis conducted was compared with findings from related studies, indicating the possibility of solving the challenges observed during the research. The solution indicated in the paper has the potential to create a procedure for the disposal of used posters and banners in cement mortar production.

The article describes the examination of the internal structure of concrete reinforced with steel fibers using two non-destructive measurement techniques: a method using ultrasonic waves and a method using electromagnetic induction. The ultrasonic method allowed for the determination of material defects resulting from the non-uniform distribution of fibers in the space of the tested sample bodies. The method using electromagnetic induction allowed for the identification of fiber content. Research has shown that fiber concrete, characterized by a relatively high content of steel fibers (above 1.5% by volume), is susceptible to the formation of material discontinuities in its internal structure. This phenomenon occurs to a very small extent in concrete with steel fiber content below 1.5%.
This research was aimed to find the structural behaviour of Calotropis procera fibres added concrete and the effect of Azadirachta indica leaf slurry blended to concrete and exposed to seawater. Conventional and fibre reinforced concrete samples fabricated keeping the curing time as 7, 14 and 28 dayswere subjected to compression, split tensile, rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity test. Increase in curing time increased the structural properties and Calotropis procerafibres added samples produced respectively 19.5%, 15%, 10.3 and 14.5% improvement in the compression, tensile, rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity values. These fibres reduced the brittleness of the specimen and avoided unprecedented failures. Accelerated corrosion and gravimetric mass loss test conducted to estimate the anti-corrosive property of Azadirachta indica leaf slurry showed decrease in corrosion rate. The corrosion rate of concrete samples without and with inhibitors was 0.0654 ± 0.008 and 0.056 ± 0.011 mm/year respectively evincing the anti-corrosive effects of Azadirachta indica leaves. Thus green materials are compatible with concrete and can be used in making sustainable concrete structures.
Clay soils present significant challenges in engineering applications, particularly in the design and construction of foundations, due to their susceptibility to swelling and shrinkage. This research investigates the enhancement of clay soils through the incorporation of fibres, compaction, and cement, based on a comprehensive series of tests conducted at the Public Works Laboratory in Adrar, southern Algeria. The tests adhered strictly to technical standards in soil mechanics, examining the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the clay soil. The results demonstrated that applying a compressive strength of 2.5 MPa and incorporating palm and glass fibres in proportions ranging from 0% to 0.3% reduced bulk density by 0.95% to 7%. The capillary water absorption rate increased by 10.61% to 12.63%, while compressive strength improved by 11.4% to 34.37%. Furthermore, thermal conductivity decreased by 0.71% to 11.9%. These findings provide valuable insights into the properties of clay soils and the observed improvements. It can be concluded that soil enhancement through various materials and fibres is viable and yields positive outcomes in geotechnical applications.

The use of reclaimed asphalt (RA) in asphalt concrete mixtures have achieved economic and environmental benefits and it is important when we want to get in line with sustainable development and circular economy. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the addition of two bio-based rejuvenators and jute fibres on the performance of asphalt mixture designed with 30% by mass RA content. Seven mix variants, varying with the addition of the rejuvenator and/or fibres, were analysed. Mechanical performance was evaluated through laboratory tests measuring moisture susceptibility (ITSR), stiffness modulus (IT-CY), resistance to crack propagation (SCB) and dynamic modulus (4PB-PR). Mixtures with jute fibres showed lower ITSR. In comparison with the reference mixture, a decrease in the stiffness modulus has been shown for mixtures with rejuvenators. Opposite trend was observed when fibres were added. Best performance in resistance to crack propagation and complex modulus was achieved by adding jute fibres with rejuvenator to the mixture.

Mineral fillers are mainly used in the production of printing and writing papers and some newsprint grades. Their purpose is to improve the optical properties of the paper and its printability, especially for multi-colour printing. Fillers also impart opacity and replace more expensive pulp with bleached substitutes. Calcium compounds and kaolin are the most commonly used fillers and their use is driven by the need to reduce production costs. However, any filler addition reduces the strength of paper products, so the use of fillers depends on the quality requirements of the final product. Fillers are additives used in paper production that fill the spaces between the fibres and improve paper properties such as whiteness, opacity, softness, satinating ability and ink absorption, as well as dimensional stability under changes in air humidity.

The solid steel-lined prestressed fiber-reinforced concrete (PFRC) slabs’ response to projectile impact was recently studied by the authors. This paper investigates the impact response of perforated steel-lined PFRC slabs when conventional steel rebars are replaced with perforated steel lining. The perforated steel-lined slabs were tested with a gas gun for their impact response. The PFRC slabs reinforced with steel rebars were also tested for comparison purposes. It was observed that the ballistic limit of two slab types (reinforced with rebars and reinforced with perforated steel lining) is almost the same for all percentages of steel fibers, which justified the equivalence of perforated steel lining with the steel rebars. However, the use of perforated steel lining resulted in improvement in the impact parameters (e.g., penetration depth, damage to the front and back faces, and mass ejected) of PFRC slabs compared to PFRC slabs with conventional steel rebars. The authors’ earlier proposed prediction formulas for the ballistic limit of solid steel-lined PFRC slabs were also updated for perforated steel-lined PFRC slabs. In the update, the perforated steel lining was replaced by an equivalent rebar system. The outcomes of the experiments and the predictions are in good agreement.
For technology development and adaptation to local needs, it may be necessary to modify lignocellulosic materials such as Cannabis sativa L. with appropriate methods and techniques. During the modification process, the lignocellulosic complex (LCC) of the raw material is interfered with to activate chemical compounds. After extraction, the research's most significant finding is that the post-extraction material has a lower tensile strength, which improves the conditions for its extraction. The entanglement of materials in harvesting equipment is a well-known problem, and any method that facilitates hemp harvesting is highly beneficial. The current study uses Hot Water Extraction (HWE) to characterize the hemp stalk before and after the extraction process. An analysis of the data will be conducted on the prepared samples after testing for strength. The study examines how the strength of raw materials varies depending on the degree of interference with the chemical composition and structure of the lignocellulosic complex (LCC).The main goal was to test the effect of different cycles of the HWE process on the strength of hemp fibers.

W artykule omówiono przykłady zastosowania błękitu laktofenolowego do wybarwiania grzybów mikroskopowych pobranych z powierzchni obiektów papierowych lub w strukturze papierów (próbki).

Historical objects on paper substrates are subject to an assessment of their state of preservation. The presence of impurities of various origins is often detected in them. Mold fungi also belong to this group. Detecting their presence requires the use of microscopic examinations and staining reagents. The article discusses examples of the use of lactophenol blue for staining microscopic fungi collected from the surface of paper objects or in the structure of papers (samples). It is an easy-to-use preparation for the detection of fungal cells, and it works by staining the chitin contained in their cell wall. Paper microbiological tests are important in conservation work due to the necessity to make a decision to disinfect the objects or to give up such a necessity.

As part of the research, chitin materials were obtained using the electrospinning method. For this purpose, chitin solutions were prepared in phosphoric acid and lithium chloride in an am-ide solvent. The coagulation of chitin materials was performed in alkaline water baths and in distilled water. As a result of the method, microspheres and microfibers of chitin were ob-tained. The morphological structure of the obtained materials was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an optical microscope. The obtained microspheres were characterized by a similar diameter value, amounting to 195 μm. In contrast, chitin microfi-bers from 90 to 150 μm. The obtained materials were subjected to mid-infrared and Raman spectrophotometric tests in order to determine the influence of the solvents used on the chemical structure of native and regenerated chitin. Infrared spectroscopy studies confirmed no changes in the chemical structure of regenerated chitin. Raman spectroscopy studies confirmed no degradation of regenerated chitin. In the spectra obtained, differences were observed in the form of changes in the shape of the bands for oscillators be associated in in-termolecular interactions, which is caused by changes in the supermolecular structure.

Knowledge of fracture mechanics parameters can help for a more accurate assessment of frost degradation of high-strength concrete. High strength concretes, despite the tight structure, are characterized by increased brittleness. Cracks in the concrete structure are places of accumulation of significant stresses. Additional stresses resulting from cyclic freeze/thaw stimulate the material destruction processes. The basic strength parameters of concrete do not take into account structural defects of the material and do not give a complete description of susceptibility to damage caused by, e.g., frost degradation. This study aimed to determine the relationship between frost degradation of high-strength concretes and changes in the value of their fracture energy associated with the initiation of cracking after 150, 250, 350 and 450 freeze/thaw cycles. The research was carried out using 100 × 100 × 400 mm samples, with a pre-initiated 30 mm deep notch. The I load model under a three-point bending test was used, based on the procedure recommended by RILEM. Concrete with a compressive strength of 90 MPa with steel fibres and a mixture of steel and basalt fibers was tested. The obtained results allow for the evaluation of frost degradation using fracture energy GF and critical crack tip opening displacement CTODc.
The paper presents results of a numerical and experimental analysis of post-critical state of a thin-walled channel-section simply supported beam under axial compression. The beam was made of carbon-epoxy symmetrical composite prepared with a pre-preg technology using 8 layers of unidirectional band. The material used was a composite of epoxy matrix reinforced with carbon fiber (system HexPly M12, Hexcel). The M12 system is used above all in aircraft structures. It exhibits high fatigue durability and good maintenance properties at relatively low specific gravity. The research was lead as the FEM numerical analyses and experimental tests in post-buckling and limit states, as well. Experimental studies were conducted to confirm results obtained from numerical calculations, which was performed using the ABAQUS® software.
The paper presents an assessment of the degradation of cyclic freeze/thaw on high-strength concretes, based on changes in the stress intensity factor KIC cycles and the total mass of surface scaling after 28 and 70 cycles. The degree of degradation was compared with the modification of stress intensity factor values. Three types of high-strength concretes (compressive strength about 90 MPa) were tested: concrete without fibres, concrete with steel fibres in the amount of 0.5% by volume (39 kg/m3) and concrete with a mixture of steel fibres (19.5 kg/m3) and basalt (6.8 kg/m3). The testing methodology is based on RILEM recommendations [1] and ASTM C666 [2] and PKN – CEN/TS 12390 Slab Test [3].

Purpose: of this paper is to investigate the durability and the mechanical properties, including compressive and flexural strengths, of the locally compressed earth blocks manufactured from soil in Irbid, Jordan. Moreover, effect of volcanic tuff as new stabilizer material on properties of compressed earth block (CEB). Compressed earth block is a technique that was created to solve environmental and economic problems in construction sector. It is widespread in many countries around the world but hasn't been used in Jordan yet. Design/methodology/approach: 9 mixtures were carried out. One of this mixture is the control mix, beside other mixtures were performed by replacing soil with 40%, 10%, 10%, of sand, volcanic tuff, and lime respectively. In addition, polypropylene fibre was used. After 28 days of curing, the CEB were dried in oven at 105°C for 24 hours then tested. Findings: Show that absorption and erosion were decreased when the lime used in the soil. On the other hand, the fibres presence significantly improved the durability and mechanical properties in all mixtures. Moreover, the higher compressive strength was obtained in the mixtures which contain lime only while the higher tensile strength was obtained in the mixtures which contain lime with sand replacement. The using of volcanic tuffs produced average compressive strength values. The reason is that in the presence of lime and pozzolana (volcanic tuff) reactions take place at low and slow rate at early ages. Research limitations/implications: volcanic tuff can produce favourable compressive strengths at later ages and this is a point of interest in the future work. Originality/value: Searching for a new material as stabilizer material that improves the properties of the compressed earth block (CEB).
