Thermocyclops taihokuensis (Harada, 1931) was recorded for the first time in Ukraine (Kyiv region). The species was found in the Bucha River and the Sovki River in 2020, and from 2021 to 2025 it was continuously present in high numbers and was the dominant zooplankton taxon in the warm seasons in Nyvky Park pond (Syrets River), indicating successful establishment of this Asian Thermocyclops species in the ponds of the right-bank tributaries of the Dnieper River. Of the three species of the genus native to Ukraine, Thermocyclops oithonoides (Sars G.O., 1863) is most similar to T. taihokuensis morphologically. Distinguishing features between the Asian Thermocyclops and native congeners, as well as the ecology of T. taihokuensis in its native range, are discussed. No native Thermocyclops species co-occurred with T. taihokuensis in the studied water bodies, which may indicate competitive replacement of the local species by the new non-native invasive one.
Cemeteries, as one of the most symbolic and enduring elements of the cultural landscape, reflect the relationships between society, the cultural environment, and value systems. A comparative analysis of cemeteries from different regions of Europe was carried out, taking into account: burial sites and their surroundings; architectural forms, including traditional graves, mausoleums, chapels, and elements of sepulchral sculpture; cultural, religious, and customary conditions determining the use of funeral spaces. Particular attention was paid to the different perceptions of cemeteries in Christian, Muslim, and Jewish religious traditions and in secular practices. The aim of the publication is to identify common features and differences in cemetery planning, emphasizing their importance as cultural, social, landscape, and axiological spaces.

Post-orogenic, post-collisional, intracontinental Permian-Carboniferous volcanism in the Sudetes, Central Europe, marked the transition from the Variscan Orogeny to the continental rifting in the eastern central Pangea. The volcanic rocks are part of volcano-sedimentary successions found in the Intra-Sudetic and North-Sudetic synclinoria. Between 313-287 Ma and culminating around 299 Ma, magmas originated from subduction-modified mantle sources and evolved in crustal magma chambers yielding rhyolitic ignimbrites and lavas with less widespread rocks of andesitic and trachyandesitic compositions. The older volcanic rocks reveal supra-subduction geochemical characteristics, while the younger ones show more pronounced within-plate signatures. Several tens of volcanic centres formed in the region, including lava fields, shield volcanoes, large rhyolite extrusions, ignimbrite caldera, maars and tuff rings, and numerous laccoliths and sills. Volcanic edifices underwent substantial erosion and supplied volcanogenic detritus into local depositional systems, while the caldera acted as an intrabasinal depositional centre. The volcanic rocks are significantly affected by post-volcanic and, mostly, diagenetic alteration. In recent years the extinct Permian-Carboniferous volcanoes became more widely recognized as regional nature attraction and part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.

The Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber L.) has achieved remarkable success in rebuilding its population in Europe, increasing its numbers and range from 1955 to the present. Data on the C. fiber abundance in Poland have been collected by the Central Statistical Office since 1960, and since 2000 they have also been available divided into voivodships. We subjected these data to statistical analysis, including chi-square tests, broken-line regression, and correspondence analysis. Biplots, charts of population dynamics, and distribution maps were created. It was also examined whether there is a relation between the density of the C. fiber population in Poland and the presence of standing or flowing waters, forest and shrub land, ponds, ditches and the proportion of meadows and pastures in each voivodship. The C. fiber population in Poland grew between 1960 and 2023. The geometric mean of the annual data showed an average increase of 10.99% per year. Furthermore, four distinct time intervals were identified within the C. fiber population dynamics, each exhibiting a distinct statistical trend: the initial interval, spanning from 1960 to 1975, demonstrated an average increase of approximately 6.9% per year, 15.6% per year in the period 1976-2002, 9.3% in 2003-2016 and 3.8% after. The largest increase occurred in the eastern and north-western Poland, while the smallest number of beavers is found in the central part of the country (in the north-south direction). The C. fiber population was negatively affected by standing surface waters and drainage ditches, while flowing surface waters increased its number.
This paper explores the extent and form of the minimal intervention concept, essential for the adaptive reuse of buildings and spaces, within 21st-century architecture. It focuses on European case studies from the last 15 years. By its nature, minimal intervention has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of construction, support recycling and upcycling processes and address current architectural challenges in Europe and globally. The paper presents the diverse perceptions and applications of the concepts of "minimum" and "almost nothing" in architecture throughout history. This ranges from pragmatic approaches to minimalism, such as cost optimization during crisis periods, through the understanding of minimalism as an architectural movement associated with Mies van der Rohe's "less is more" adage, to Burckhardt's considerations of preserving existing architecture without intervention. Based on an analysis and comparison of three European case studies, the paper describes what constitutes the "minimum" in each, across their entire lifecycle from design to eventual disappearance. For the case study of "Elektrický anjel," a theatrical play situated in an old boiler room in Bratislava, the minimum was achieved by maximizing the utilization of the old boiler room's character, condition, and genius loci. Into this space, a self-supporting, reversible structure defining a provisional stage was inserted. In the exhibition "The Exciting Mysterious Aquarium" by Andrej Dúbravský, the minimum was achieved by introducing art into an unfinished metro depot in Bratislava. The new gallery function primarily emerged from a programmatic redefinition of this raw, abandoned space, into which Dúbravský's paintings were placed with minimal physical intervention (solely by mounting them on walls and providing provisional lighting). The exhibition demonstrated how a subtle intervention can yield significant spatial and conceptual impact. "The Theatre of the useFULL," presented at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, featured a pavilion with integrated projection within an old industrial hall. The intervention was constructed from materials and pieces of furniture chosen by the architects in collaboration with local initiatives supporting the homeless. After the Biennale, the temporary theater was dismantled, and all elements were donated to the initiatives that needed them. Almost nothing was left unused from "The Theatre of the useFULL," a core principle conceived from its very inception. These analyses suggest that minimal interventions represent a multifaceted approach, offering relevant and responsible solutions that address contemporary architectural demands such as sustainability, economic efficiency, recycling and upcycling, the elimination of new construction, and the overall minimization of material, costs, and energy. Minimal intervention emerges as a viable alternative to the often complex and resource-intensive structural changes commonly associated with architectural conversions.

High-rise buildings from the 1960s and 1970s in European cities are testimony to a certain era of high-rise development on the Old Continent, the strength of which seems to depend on three factors: the architectural quality of the buildings, the number of high-rises that will stand the test of time, and the method of renovation of these structures. The analysis aims to demonstrate the scale of liquidation and renovation of tall buildings constructed in the period from 1960 to 1979 in thirteen large European cities. The study covered 207 buildings over 80 m high. Nineteen of them were demolished, i.e. 9.17%, and 73 buildings, i.e. 35.26%, were renovated. This indicates the significant scale of the phenomenon. Examples of tall buildings show various degrees of changes made to the external image: from renovation with faithful recreation of the original design solutions and architectural details to major transformations of the original form and replacing it with a new one with a different shape.
Complexes of high-rise buildings significantly affect the urban landscape, especially tall structures, as even single complexes can change the image of a city, such as the Flame Towers in Baku. Some pairs of high-rise buildings are among the most recognizable vertical signs of the cities in which they were built, such as the WTC in New York and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Complexes of high-rise buildings are characterized by a strong formal connection between the individual elements of the complex, which makes them form a coherent whole [Gibberd 1959; Giedion 1968; Jencks 1980; Firley, Gimbal 2011; Korotich 2011, 2018; Al-Kodmany 2011, 2017, 2020; Al-Kodmany, Ali 2013]. The most momentous example of a high-rise building complex is probably the famous Rockefeller Center, built in the 1930s in New York’s Manhattan. This work is considered an innovative solution and the first set of high-rise buildings in the world [Goldberger 1982; Hasan-Uddin 2009]. The development of high-rise buildings around the world has resulted in the scale and form of high-rise complexes today, ranging from spectacular configurations of skyscrapers of immense height to groupings of skyscrapers of moderate height and more buildings.

XX w. do obecnej dekady.

Rozwinięta współpraca międzynarodowa jest jednym z podstawowych elementów przesądzających o skuteczności działania służb granicznych, stąd też Straż Graniczna przywiązuje dużą wagę do jej doskonalenia.

The aim of this article is to analyze the causes of migration to Europe and ways to protect the eastern border of the Republic of Poland against illegal migration. The geopolitical situation in the world has caused a sharp increase in illegal migration. This is not a new phenomenon, as climate change and armed conflicts that have been going on for many years are intensifying this phenomenon. Poland's eastern border is also the eastern border of the European Union. To a large extent, the protection of the eastern border against illegal migration not only affects the security of the Republic of Poland, but also protects the entire EU against this practice. The main research problem was formulated as follows: What security measures should be used to ensure protection of the eastern border of the Republic of Poland against illegal migration? The basic method used in preparing the publication was the analysis and synthesis of collected scientific sources. A comparison was also used, the essence of which was to identify common features, similarities and differences in existing threats related to illegal migration. The use of this method allowed for the detection of similarity and dissimilarity in securing the state border by referring to border protection systems as well as the experiences of other countries. Moreover, inference was also used to formulate the most important results of the diagnosis. After Poland's accession to the Schengen area, the Border Guard is responsible for protecting the external border of the European Union with the Russian Federation, Belarus and Ukraine. It also conducts activities related to combating organized crime and illegal migration in the territory of the Republic of Poland. Developed international cooperation is one of the basic elements determining the effectiveness of border services, hence the Border Guard attaches great importance to its improvement. Ongoing cooperation of the Border Guard with border services of neighboring countries is an essential requirement for border protection. This cooperation is implemented at all levels of command and also takes institutionalized forms. It is assumed that an integrated border management system is a key issue in counteracting illegal migration. This process provides comprehensive and consistent control in the area of EU security, which allows us to respond to identified threats in a more effective and efficient manner.
Stwierdzono statystycznie istotne związki między SLP i rocznymi obszarowymi wartościami elementów klimatycznych nad Polską: temperaturą powietrza (TPL), zachmurzeniem ogólnym (NPL), usłonecznieniem (UPL), wilgotnością względną (fPL), sumami opadów (RPL), ciśnieniem atmosferycznym (PPL) i prędkością wiatru (VPL). Wzrostowi SLP ponad normę wieloletnią odpowiada nad Polską spadek TPL, UPL i PPL, a wzrost NPL, RPL, fPL i VPL. Przy spadku SLP nad północną Europą wzrost temperatury następuje w wyniku wzrostu intensywności napływów powietrza z zachodu (adwekcje powietrza morskiego w chłodnym półroczu), a nad południową Europą w wyniku wzrostu usłonecznienia (wzrost sytuacji antycyklonalnych w półroczu ciepłym).

Changes in atmospheric pressure over the Barents Sea, independently of pressure changes in the Icelandic Low, have a strong and significant impact on atmospheric pressure changes over Europe (Marsz and Styszyńska 2023b). They consist of pressure changes over northern Europe (latitudes 75-60°N) that are compatible in phase with pressure changes over the Barents Sea and opposite in phase with pressure changes over southern Europe (to the S of ~55°N). The paper presents the results of a study on the variability of climatic elements over Poland and Europe under the influence of annual pressure changes over the Barents Sea (hereafter SLP). The study period is 1951-2020. Statistically significant relationships were found between SLP and annual area values of climatic elements over Poland: air temperature (TPL), total cloud cover (NPL), sunshine duration (UPL), relative humidity (fPL), precipitation totals (RPL), atmospheric pressure (PPL) and wind speed (VPL). An increase in SLP above the multi-annual norm corresponds over Poland to a decrease in TPL, UPL and PPL, and an increase in NPL, RPL, fPL and VPL. A decrease in SLP has the opposite effect. Changes in SLP explain between 33 per cent (TPL) and several per cent of the variance in the other elements, with annual precipitation showing the weakest response to changes in SLP (~15 per cent of the explained variance). These changes indicate that with changes in SLP over the Barents Sea there are changes in the trajectories of low-pressure systems. In years when SLP is higher than normal, the tracks of lows move over southern Europe (~40-55°N), and in years when SLP is lower than normal, the tracks of lows move over northern Europe. During these periods, the proportion of anticyclonic weather increases over southern Europe. The effect of SLP changes on the variability of climatic elements is most pronounced in the warm half-year, and strongly in Q3 (July-September). This differentiates the influence of SLP over the Barents Sea from that of the NAO, which most strongly influences the variability of climatic elements in the winter period. The impact of SLP changes on the variability of climatic elements over Europe is generally similar to that observed over Poland. Overall of Europe, air temperature is most strongly related to SLP over the Barents Sea. When the SLP over the whole of Europe decreases, the air temperature increases; when it increases, it decreases. This is the case whether SLP increases or decreases over a particular part of Europe – the sign of temperature change remains the same. An increase in annual temperature over Europe with a decrease in SLP over the Barents Sea occurs as a result of two different processes. With a decrease in SLP over northern Europe, the temperature rise occurs as a result of an increase in the intensity of air inflows from the west (maritime air advections in the cool half of the year), and over southern Europe as a result of an increase in sunshine duration (increase in anticyclonic situations in the warm half of the year). When SLP increases above normal, the temperature decrease over northern Europe occurs as a result of a weakening of the advection of air masses from the west, and over southern Europe (to the S of 55°N) as a result of an increase in the intensity of air advection from the west (an increase in the frequency of cyclonic weather causes an increase in cloud cover and a decrease in sunshine duration).
A focal point in present-day conservation terminology, authenticity comes from the ancient Greek word afthentikós, which in modern times has come to mean genuine and valid. Based on this interpretation, it entered the conservation agenda, through the Venice Charter, in 1964, received added attention, through the Nara Document, in 1994, and since then, has generated multiple debates among conservation specialists. Yet while a wide consensus on a definition and method of assessment of authenticity pends, other key players in the European setting, namely national authorities, separate bodies, public groupings, and individual owners endorse, and in many cases, assume action in opposite directions. Considering the practical impact of these contradictions, the overall issue needs to be urgently discussed, which is precisely the goal of this paper. Based on extensive bibliographic and archival research, it initially addresses the evolution of the term “authenticity” and its current standing in the conservation agenda. It then examines and evaluates the aforementioned opposite postures, with reference to characteristic examples throughout Europe, and concludes by outlining proposals for the necessary reconciliation.

Jednakże podczas gdy wciąż brak konsensusu w sprawie definicji i metod oceny autentyczności, kluczowi gracze w środowisku europejskim, a mianowicie władze krajowe, odrębne organy, ugrupowania publiczne i indywidualni właściciele w wielu przypadkach podejmują różne, czasem sprzeczne działania związane z autentycznością.
Encyonema bonapartei Heudre, C.E.Wetzel & Ector is a diatom species originally documented in 2016, following its discovery in three canals in the eastern region of France. In 2021, an extensive hydrobiological survey in a mountainous part of southwestern Serbia led to the first finding of this taxon outside of France, i.e. in the Uvac Special Nature Reserve –in Lake Zlatar (Zlatarsko jezero) and in the Marić River (Marića reka). Detailed light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observations of a large population recorded in Lake Zlatar confirmed the unique morphological characteristics of E. bonapartei, which is also the first record for the diatom flora of Serbia. The present work provides new information on the distribution and ecological preferences of E. bonapartei, taking into account physical and chemical characteristics of its habitats in Serbia.

The paper aims to analyse the challenges European supply chains face in the context of satellite communications (specifically, in the Copernicus programme) amidst geopolitical and pandemic disruptions. It focuses on identifying factors and barriers and recommended solutions to enhance resilience in these supply chains. The study employs a comprehensive approach, incorporating Delphi surveys, a literature review, and the STEEPED analysis. Experts from the satellite communications field participated in the Delphi survey, and the study scrutinised the impact of Delphi theses on various stages of supply chains. STEEPED analysis was used to identify factors enhancing the resilience of European supply chains in satellite communications. An analysis of their validity and uncertainty was also carried out. The research highlights the factors influencing supply chain resilience within satellite communications, emphasising the importance of coping with uncertainty, shocks, and disruptions. The study presents valuable recommendations to strengthen supply chain resilience amid infrastructural and geopolitical challenges. This research enriches insights into building resilience strategies for European supply chains operating within intricate and uncertain environments. By analysing the role of the Copernicus programme and Earth observation data, the paper contributes to the theoretical framework, providing essential knowledge for managing supply chains in a dynamic and complex environment. The study’s recommendations offer practical guidance for EU institutions overseeing the Copernicus programme and its users. By effectively leveraging Copernicus and Earth observation data, stakeholders can enhance their analysis methods. These insights enable practical actions to be taken, ensuring the continuity and stability of European supply chains amidst challenging global scenarios.

The article presented herein constitutes a research summary on urban, multi-purpose facilities that combine commercial, service and industrial functions with the concept of commercial urban agriculture and residential housing, which came into existence in the second decade of the 21st century as one of the forms of revitalization of neglected housing and industrial districts. It aims to support the thesis regarding the catalyzing role of urban agriculture in transforming urban tissue at the touch-point of its various functional zones and its growing role as an element of nature in transforming urban structures. The examination of the selected facilities, catalogued as belonging to the group in scope, provided a subsequent explanation of the problem of diversity and their recently relatively more excellent value in space, especially housing districts. It also allowed us to address the question of their increasing popularity following 2019. The research is based on the method of historical and interpretative mixed research combined with three case studies analysis: Abattoir BIGH in Anderlecht (Belgium), Agrotopia (Inagro) in Roeselare (Belgium) and La Cité Maraîchère in Romainville (France).
Układ niskiego ciśnienia w subarktycznej strefie Atlantyku Północnego, tworzący północne ramię dipola NAO, wykazuje znaczne zróżnicowanie w czasie. Tworzą go przemiennie trzy ośrodki – niż nad Morzem Labrador, Niż Islandzki i niż nad Morzem Barentsa. Smedsrud i in. 2012, 2020). Årthun i in. 2012).

The low-pressure system in the subarctic zone of the North Atlantic, forming the northern arm of the NAO dipole, varies significantly over time. It is composed of three alternating centers – the Labrador Sea low, the Icelandic Low and the Barents Sea low. The individual low-pressure centers mentioned above occur in various configurations, the mutual arrangement of which strongly influences the values of the NAO indices. The aim of the presented research was to determine the impact of isolated SLP changes over the Barents Sea area on atmospheric circulation in the Atlantic-European circulation sector, regardless of SLP changes in the Icelandic Low. When the SLP drops over the Barents Sea, a low-pressure system called the Barents-Kara Trough forms there. In such periods, SLP decreases significantly over the eastern part of the N Atlantic and Europe in the zone located N of 55-58°N, and SLP increases SLP of this border. The maximum increase in SLP is then observed in the latitude zone of 45-50°N and over western and central Europe (10°W - 25°E). During such a period, the trajectories of low-pressure systems move to the zone between 58 and 70°N. The frequency of low-pressure weather, including frontal weather, is increasing in this zone (55-70°N). South of 55- 58°N, SLP and the frequency of anticyclones increase. These are most often very strongly eastward ridges of the subtropical N Atlantic anticyclone (Azores High). This increases the frequency of frontal anticyclonic weather in these areas. During periods of SLP increase over the Barents Sea, the Barents- Kara Trough disappears, there is an increase in SLP over the area located N of 55-58°N, and SLP of this boundary decreases. The tracks of low-pressure systems move over Western and Central Europe at lower latitudes (45-55°N). This causes appropriate changes in the weather structure in the N and S regions from 55-58°N, opposite to those described above. Changes in SLP over the Barents Sea are controlled by changes in heat resources in the waters of this sea (e.g. Smedsrud et al. 2012, 2020). Heat resources in the waters of the Barents Sea are regulated by a decreased or increased inflow of warm Atlantic Waters (e.g. Årthun et al. 2012). As a result, all these changes, including the SLP over Europe, are driven, with lags, by NA THC (North Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation) variability. The simultaneous decrease in SLP over the Barents Sea and the decrease in SLP in the Icelandic Low causes an extensive one- or two-center low-pressure system with a WSW-ENE orientation to form in the subarctic and Arctic zone, forcing air advection from the west over NE Europe and Siberia. The decline in SLP over the Barents Sea after 1988 is consistent with the change in macrocirculation epochs over Europe (from epoch E to epoch W), which was caused by the change of the NA THC phase from negative to positive.

The 0.5° resolution of many global observational or quasi-observational datasets is not sufficient for the evaluation of current state-of-the-art regional climate models or the forcing of ocean model simulations over Europe. While higher resolved products are available for meteorological data, e.g. ERA5 reanalysis and the E-OBS vs 22 (EOBS22) datasets, they lack crucial information at the land-ocean boundary. ERA5 is frequently used to force regional climate models (RCMs) or ocean models and both datasets are commonly used as reference datasets for the evaluation of RCMs. Therefore, we extended both datasets with high-resolution river discharge for the period 1979–2018. On the one hand, our discharge data close the water cycle at the land-ocean interface so that the discharges can be used as lateral freshwater input for ocean models applied in the European region. On the other hand, the data can be used to identify trends in discharge that are induced by recent climate change as ERA5 and EOBS22 are rather independent datasets. The experimental setup to generate the discharges was chosen in a way that it could be easily adapted in a climate or Earth system modelling framework. Consequently, the recently developed 5 Min. horizontal resolution version of the hydrological discharge (HD) model was used to simulate discharge. It has already been applied in multiple climate modelling studies and is coupled within several global and regional Earth system models. As the HD model currently does not regard direct human impacts of the river runoff, it is well suited to investigate climate change-related discharge trends. In order to calculate the necessary gridded input fields for the HD model from ERA5 and EOBS22 data, we used the HydroPy global hydrological model. For both experiments, we found that the general behavior of discharge is captured well for many European rivers, which is consistent to earlier results. For the EOBS22 based discharges, a widespread low bias in simulated discharge occurs, which is likely caused by the missing undercatch correction in the underlying precipitation data. The analysis of trends over Southeastern Europe was hampered by missing data in EOBS22 after 2004. Using both experiments, we identified consistent trend patterns in various discharge statistics, with increases in low flow characteristics over Northern Europe and general drying trends over Central and Southern Europe. In summary, we introduced an experimental setup that is useful to generate high-resolution river runoff data consistent with the meteorological forcing for historical periods and future scenarios from any climate model data instead of having to rely on observed time series.
