The paper discusses the theoretical background in terms of the use of in-phantom recombination chambers in mixed radiation fi elds, with special attention paid to the question of how the experimentally determined, linear-energy-transfer-dependent (LET) parameters can be applied with regard to the more accurate determination of the chamber response and absorbed dose in mixed radiation fi elds. Methods of taking the recombination index of radiation quality (RIQ) measurements and theoretical consideration concerning the determination of the absorbed dose are described. Classical Bragg-Gray and Spencer-Attix cavity theories were analysed and their relationship to in-phantom recombination chambers was specifi ed. Methods concerning the estimation of correction factors with regard to RIQ measurements and their importance are highlighted.

This work presents recombination methods used for secondary radiation measurements at the Facility for Proton Radiotherapy of Eye Cancer at the Institute for Nuclear Physics, IFJ, in Krakow (Poland). The measurements of H*(10) were performed, with REM-2 tissue equivalent chamber in two halls of cyclotrons AIC-144 and Proteus C-235 and in the corridors close to treatment rooms. The measurements were completed by determination of gamma radiation component, using a hydrogen-free recombination chamber. The results were compared with the measurements using rem meter types FHT 762 (WENDI-II) and NM2 FHT 192 gamma probe and with stationary dosimetric system.

W artykule opisano najczęściej stosowane techniki i zabiegi stosowane w kardiologii interwencyjnej, polegającej na łączeniu diagnostyki, w szczególności diagnostyki obrazowej, wykorzystującej technikę cewnikowania serca i naczyń, z małoinwazyjnymi zabiegami korygującymi wykryte patologie. Spośród najczęstszych zabiegów interwencyjnych przedstawiono kardiostymulację, koronaroplastykę, wszczepianie stentów naczyniowych, elektroablację oraz inne często stosowane zabiegi w obrębie serca z użyciem cewnikowania serca i naczyń.

The paper describes technology and procedures commonly used in interventional cardiology, which is based on combining image diagnostics with cardiac and vessels catheterization and with minimally invasive procedures correcting the detected pathologies. Cardiostimulation, coronaroplasty, implantation of stents, electroablation and other interventional cardiac operations used with cardiac and vessel catheterization, were presented.

Iodine activity in thyroid of female patient was measured with different radiation meters in order to estimate a possibility to use them in case of radiation accident. Two series of measurements were performed – first after diagnostic and second after therapeutic administration of iodine to the patient. The isotope activities were higher than those registered during routine radiation monitoring and similar to the activities which could be registered after radiation accident. The studies showed that simple dose rate meters may serve for identification and selection of contaminated persons which should be later subjected to the measurements with especially dedicated equipment. The initial measurements can be performed outside laboratory.

Przedstawiono sposób wyznaczania przestrzennego współczynnika jakości neutronów prędkich, Qn*(10), w polu promieniowania mieszanego o nieznanym, lecz ograniczonym, widmie energii neutronów. W tym sposobie wykorzystuje się korelacje między wartościami Qn*(10), obliczonymi metodą Monte Carlo dla neutronów monoenergetycznych, a parametrami doświadczalnych charakterystyk nasycenia komory rekombinacyjnej, umieszczonej we wzorcowych polach neutronów monoenergetycznych wraz z towarzyszącym promieniowaniem gamma. Omija się przy tym szereg niepewności, m.in. związanych z brakiem pełnej odpowiedniości między współczynnikiem jakości promieniowania a parametrami, od których zależy lokalna rekombinacja jonów, a także z brakiem pełnej odpowiedniości konstrukcji komory rekombinacyjnej z tzw. kulą MKJR (ang. ICRU) definiującą wielkości operacyjne H*(10) i Q*(10).

The paper presents a method for determination of ambient quality factor for fast neutrons, Qn*(10), in mixed radiation fields with unknown neutron energy spectrum of limited energy range. The method uses a correlation between the Qn*(10) values, calculated by Monte-Carlo method for monoenergetic neutrons with parameters of saturation curves of the recombination chamber, determined experimentally in the fields of monoenergetic neutrons and accompanying gamma radiation. In such a way, a number of discrepancies can be omitted, among them those associated with limited conformity between radiation quality factor and parameters of initial recombination of ions, as well as between construction of the recombination chamber and ICRU sphere, for which the quantities H*(10) and Q*(10) were defined.

The concept of radiation protection culture, proposed by French Society for Radiation Protection (SFRP) and then launched by International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) is presented. The paper is focused on the role of radiation culture in preventing unjustified fear associated with the use of radiation. Principles of RP culture and optimization of radiation protection, as well as the problems how RP culture can be learned and how to engage the stakeholders are considered.

Recombination chambers and 2202D Studsvik-Alnor reference remmeter were used for determination of ambient dose equivalent, H*(10) and its neutron and gamma components at the door to the maze of 15 MV medical accelerator. The measurements were performed at opened and partly closed door. The results showed that the ambient dose equivalent rate was 76.2 μSv h-1 at the opened door and only 2.7 μSv h-1 at slightly opened door, 2.5 m from the entrance to the maze.

Education on medical electroengineering at the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) was introduced in 1946. Recently, WUT was among the institutions which initiated introduction of Biomedical Engineering education to Polish universities as complete study curriculum. Inter-faculty studies in Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology and Faculty of Mechatronics started in 2007. Education at two levels is provided – engineer/BSc (7 semesters) and MSc (3 semesters). The curricula comply with Polish national educational standards, Bologna Declaration and indications of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE). The graduated specialists are expected to be prepared to activities in several fields of biomedical engineering profession.

Obecnie inżynieria biomedyczna ma charakter wybitnie interdyscyplinarny, ale wpływ elektrotechniki na jej rozwój jest wyraźnie znaczący.

Now biomedical engineering has interdisciplinary character but influence of electrical engineering for progress in biomedical engineering is notable.

W pracy przedstawiono koncepcję budowanego obecnie ośrodka terapii protonowej w Centrum Cyklotronowym Bronowice.

Proton radiotherapy is a worldwide rapidly growing technology for cancer treatment, which has to be performed with the use of high energy accelerators. This technology was not available in Poland up to now. The paper presents the concept of the accelerator for proton therapy center, which is now under construction in Cyclotron Centre Bronowice.

Dosimetric characterization of therapy beams for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) involves determination of dose components and among them the “nitrogen” dose due to protons generated by neutron capture on 14N. In this work, investigations were carried out using a graphite recombination chamber in order to determine the 14N capture, gamma, and fast neutron dose components. The separation of the dose components is based on differences in the shape of the saturation curve, depending on the LET spectrum of the investigated radiation. The measurements were performed in reference radiation fields at the Institute of Atomic Energy at Świerk and at a reactor beam of the INP Řež (the Czech Republic). The gamma component was determined with an accuracy of about 5%, while the variations in its value could be monitored with an accuracy of about 0.5%. Relative changes in the beam components (thermal/fast neutrons) could be detected on line with an accuracy of about 5%. It was shown that the chamber with tissue-equivalent cups could be used for the determination of the 14N capture dose at different depths in tissue.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów czułości neutronowej cylindrycznej komory jonizacyjnej, wypełnionej gazem ¹⁰ BF ₃ przy ciśnieniu kilkuset kPa, pracującej w reżimie impulsowym. Pomiary przeprowadzono w polach promieniowania źródeł ²³⁹ Pu-Be i ²⁵²Cf Komora ma długość 85 mm i średnicę 19 mm. Aluminiowa obudowa komory o grubości 0,3 mm stanowiła jedną z elektrod (na potencjale zerowym). Drugą, centralną, elektrodę wykonano z pręta miedzianego o średnicy 1,5 mm. Wykazano, że komora w moderatorze może spełniać rolę wysokoczułego detektora neutronów termicznych, a noszona przy pasku człowieka - również detektora przenośnego do detekcji małych strumieni neutronów termicznych. Czułość neutronowa pracującej w takich warunkach komory, napełnionej do ciśnienia 150 kPa dest rzędu 1 impulsu/neutron cm₃² w polu promieniowania źródła ²⁵²Cf.

The paper presents neutron sensitivity values of a cylindrical ionization chamber, filled with ¹⁰ BF ₃ measurements were performed in radiation fields of neutron sources. The chamber is 85 mm long and 19 mm in diameter. The 0.3 mm thick aluminum housing of the chamber was connected as one of the electrodes (at zero potential). The second, central electrode was made of copper rod, with diameter of 1.5 mm. It was shown that the chamber in a moderator can serve as a sensitive neutron detector, and also as a pocket detector for detection of neutrons at low flux densities, if it is placed near the human body (by the belt). Neutron sensitivity of the chamber with gas pressure of 150 kPa and placed at the body was of order of 1 pulse/n cm₃² in the radiation field of ²⁵²Cf.

A new method is proposed for the determination of ion collection efficiency due to initial recombination process only, in a high pressure ionization chamber, operating in a quasi-pulsed radiation field. It is shown that the influence of undesirable volume recombination can be eliminated using a semi-empirical formula. The unknown function of the chamber polarizing voltage, included to the formula, can be found experimentally in the investigated radiation field, using the approach proposed in the paper. The function is the same for all radiation fields with similar time structure.

Wizualizacja preparatów tkankowych w świetle spolaryzowanym umożliwia analizę rozkładu elementów dwójłomnych w tkankach prawidłowych i zdegenerowanych lub chorobowo zmienionych. Podstawą metody jest zarejestrowanie obrazów tkanki w świetle przechodzącym o różnej polaryzacji. Do tego celu zbudowano prosty zestaw laboratoryjny, umożliwiający uzyskanie serii obrazów odpowiedniej jakości dla zadanych ustawień polaryzatora i analizatora. Wykonano testową serię obrazów preparatów tkanek prawidłowych i nowotworowych. Z uzyskanych obrazów wyliczano macierze Muellera, a następnie poddano je analizie, stosując metodę autokorelacyjną oraz analizę statystyczną obrazów odpowiadających elementom macierzy Muellera. Stwierdzono, że dla kilku rodzajów prawidłowych i patologicznie zmienionych tkanek obserwuje się różnice w rozkładzie elementów dwójłomnych.

Imaging of tissue slides with polarized light enables analysis of spatial distribution of birefringence in the tissue samples for physiological and for degenerate or pathologically changed tissues. The method is based on registration of microscopic images of tissue samples in transmitted polarized light. A simple laboratory system has been designed in order to get the series of proper quality images for selected positions of polarizers. The test images physiological and malignant tissue slides were recorded. Mueller matrices were calculated and analyzed using the statistical and the autocorrelation analysis. The results obtained so far indicate that the differences in distribution of bi­refringence in physiological and malignant tissues could be observed, however the statistical significance of the changes is not clear yet.

Data on the initial recombination of ions are needed for designing recombination chambers, used in mixed radiation dosimetry in order to obtain information about radiation quality. Nevertheless, experimental data for pressurized gases are scarce, whereas reliable theoretical models are absent. The paper provides experimental data on the initial recombination in hydrocarbon gases (methane, ethane and propane) depending on gas pressure up to 1.8 MPa. The data were derived from the measurements of saturation curves of a tissue equivalent recombination chamber of an REM-2 type, in reference radiation fields of 137Cs and 239Pu-Be sources. Ion recombination due to volume recombination and back diffusion of ions was subtracted from the measured values of ion collection efficiency. The values of gas parameters needed for the subtraction procedure were determined by measurements of saturation curves of the chamber at several dose rates for each gas pressure. The important practical rule resulting from the experiments is that in the first approximation the initial recombination does not depend on the kind of the hydrocarbon gas but only on its density in the chamber.

Local ion density in the tracks of secondary electrons generated in tissue by diagnostic X-rays was determined on the basis of measurements of the recombination index of the radiation quality (RIQ), measured for X-rays ranging from 40 kVp to 230 kVp, and for several gamma radiation sources. The values obtained ranged from 1 for a (137)Cs gamma radiation source to 1.3+1.9 for X-rays. The peak value was observed for a (241)Am source and for 100 kVp X-rays. Values of RIQ reflect the effective local ion density of the investigated radiation and correlate with the relative biological effectiveness of the radiation.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is an experimental therapy of selected tumours, based on a nuclear reaction initiated by the capture of thermal neutron by the 10B nucleus. After 10B had been delivered selectively to tumour cells, it can be activated by neutrons to deliver locally lethal high-LET radiation. BNCT beams are complex mixed radiation fields, because of broad neutron energy range, presence of gamma contamination and necessity of precise determination of several dose components. The paper presents some results of the research project on BNCT dosimetry with activation foils, recombination chambers and TL detectors.
