The constant development of industry results in an intensive search for increasingly efficient and less energy-intensive solutions. This also applies to chemical processes, where new active catalysts and carriers are desirable, ensuring reduced energy consumption while simultaneously increasing process efficiency. It is estimated that the majority of chemical reactions carried out on an industrial scale are catalytic processes. Catalytic processes are typically carried out using catalysts in a packed bed. However, this type of packing has numerous drawbacks. Due to its stochastic nature, it can cause uneven fluid flow, vortex formation, reverse flow, and other phenomena, which can in turn lead to the formation of so-called hot spots and local deactivation of the active layer. These factors adversely affect the conversion and selectivity of the process. An additional challenge is the need for processes that require strictly defined temperature conditions to be properly conducted. To overcome the problem of uneven temperature distribution within the bed and insufficient heat transfer, many different solutions have been proposed. One of these is the use of metal supports, which have significantly better heat transfer properties than traditionally used ceramic supports. However, despite the high potential of metal supports with a catalytic layer applied to their surface, these supports are not without their drawbacks. First and foremost, the amount of catalyst (available active sites) is significantly smaller compared to a traditional bulk bed. A solution that combines the advantages of metal packing (high heat transfer coefficients) with ceramic packing is a "packed structure" type of packing, in which a bed of fine catalyst grains is placed within the voids of the metal structure. Such metal structures can be, for example, monoliths, solid foams, or POCS-type packings. These solutions have been experimentally tested in exothermic and endothermic processes ensuring higher efficiency and more uniform temperature distributions within the bed compared to a conventional packed bed. Problems with this type of packing, in turn, include the packing density of the metal structure with catalyst grains and flow resistance. However, a solution to this problem could be the use of a POCS structure with a properly defined geometry adapted to the process requirements (grain size) and manufactured using 3D printing. This type of filling ("filled POCS") is characterized by more favorable flow properties compared to a packed bed. It's also worth noting that one of the fundamental requirements for packings with intense radial heat transfer is ensuring adequate contact between the metal structure and the reactor wall. This is a parameter that determines the temperature profiles in the reactor bed. Even a small amount of contact between these two surfaces (on the order of 10-20%) ensures sufficient heat exchange between the foam and the reactor wall; further increases in contact area yield only minor improvements in this parameter. This article reviews new types of packing for reactors with intensive radial heat transfer, highlighting the significant potential of so-called "packed packing." Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of various types of ceramic-metal packing are identified. Additionally, an algorithm for determining the radial heat transfer coefficient, implementable in Matlab, is proposed. The advantages and disadvantages of the experimental methodology were indicated, recommending the water bath method (ice water) as suitable for laboratory-scale research.
The description of the physical parameters characterizing heat transport in the soil medium, especially on a regional scale, requires long-term and high frequency observations of temperature changes in soil profiles. This paper presents a project for a multi-channel, modular and universal data logger for temperature distribution data collecting in the soil profile, based on open electronic components, such as Arduino microcontroller systems and DS18B20 thermometers. The data logger tests were carried out in two profiles. The seven-month tests did not show any errors in the functioning of the measurement set. The presented device requires an average current of 320 µA, which allows for its stable operation on one battery set for about 300 days in temperate climate conditions. The DS18B20 thermometers allow for accurate and stable temperature measurement (the mean absolute error after laboratory calibration was 0.02°C). The cost of a single measurement-registration device was approximately 76 EUR, representing a competitive price in comparison with commercial data loggers. This allows, with relatively low expenditure, the creation of extensive observation networks for the analysis of the heat flow process in high temporal and spatial resolution.
The fully developed turbulent Boussinesq convection is known to form large-scale rolls, often termed the ‘large-scale circulation’ (LSC). It is an interesting question how such a large-scale flow is created, in particular in systems when the energy input occurs at small scales, when inverse cascade is required in order to transfer energy into the large-scale modes. Here, the small-scale driving is introduced through stochastic, randomly distributed heat source (say radiational). The mean flow equations are derived by means of simplified renormalization group technique, which can be termed a ‘weakly nonlinear renormalization procedure’ based on consideration of only the leading order terms at each step of the recursion procedure, as full renormalization in the studied anisotropic case turns out unattainable. The effective, anisotropic viscosity is obtained and it is shown that the inverse energy cascade occurs via an effective ‘motive force’ which takes the form of transient negative, vertical diffusion.

This paper considers an analytical approach for the prognosis of mass and heat transport during the growth of epitaxial layers by means of pulsed laser deposition. The approach provides the opportunity to make a prognosis which takes into account the spatial and temporal variations of their parameters and, at the same time, the nonlinearity of these processes. Based on this approach, the influence of the variation of several parameters on the growth process is investigated.
We investigate the upper bound on the vertical heat transport in the fully 3D Rayleigh–Bénard convection problem at the infinite Prandtl number for a micropolar fluid. We obtain a bound, given by the cube root of the Rayleigh number, with a logarithmic correction. The derived bound is compared with the optimal known one for the Newtonian fluid. It follows that the (optimal) upper bound for the micropolar fluid is less than the corresponding bound for the Newtonian fluid at the same Rayleigh number. Moreover, strong microrotational diffusion effects can entirely suppress the heat transfer. In the Newtonian limit our purely analytical findings fully agree with estimates and scaling laws obtained from previous theories significantly relying on phenomenology.

Long-term observations of water temperature in the spring on the eastern side of the Zameczki mountain allow collecting a set of data showing variability of this parameter in time. The paper presents an interpretation of this data by a non-stationary numerical model of heat transport and water mixing. Quantitative interpretation of the results required constructing a conceptual model, whose correctness was verified on the basis of evaluation of calculated and measured water temperature. Due to the model calibration it was possible to establish the mean values of heat conductivity of the rocks at 1.4 Wm–1K–1 and the water-rock specific heat capacity at 0.92 kJkg–1K–1 with the mean error and mean absolute error at the level of 0.08 and 0.28ºC, respectively. According to this model, variability of water temperature in the spring can be explained by conductive heat transport in the zone of seasonal fluctuations and by the groundwater inflow from the neutral zone. Based on the model calculations it was possible to determine the quantitative share of waters representing different depth zones. The results indicate that 67% of water recharging the spring is linked with the shallow circulation zone, in which the main temperature determinant is the conductive heat stream directed perpendicular to the terrain surface. The remaining 33% of the inflow represents a deeper circulation system that can be identified with the neutral zone. In this zone, water temperature is close to the annual mean air temperature and the temperature gradients have small values both in space and time .

Applications of inverse methods in corrosion research and materials degradation are demonstrated. Two examples concern corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures and one concerns a blast furnace. In the first example, a diffusion model and diffusion with reactions model are used to determine a chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete which can be applied to predict the lifetime of a building construction. In the second example, determination of corrosion state based on solution of inverse problems defined for transient response (galvanostatic pulse method) is shown. Finally, it is demonstrated how the inverse problem of the heat transport can be used to estimate degradation of refractory material being in contact with molten metal based on temperature readings in selected locations of the blast furnace.

Selection of appropriate methods and parameters enable the drying process mathematical models, based on which one can analyze the kinetics of changes in water content and temperature in the material being dried and the drying agent, while using the simulation calculations to find the optimal duration of this process and energy consumption. The paper presents, designed and constructed by the authors, the laboratory possible to determine the dynamics of changes in biomass drying, depending on the input parameters. These parameters are: supply air temperature and the air mass flowing through the material being dried. In addition, the position allows you to measure the temperature of the bed in six freely chosen by the investigator sites and also the temperature of the air entering and leaving the hopper and its humidity. In order to facilitate the control and operation of the position is installed on your computer proprietary software written in Delphi that continuously recorded data archives.
There are two main topics of this research: (i) one topic considers overall properties of a nonlinear cellular composite, treated as a model of the liver tissue, and (ii) the other topic concerns the propagation of heat in the nonlinear medium described by the homogenised coefficient of thermal conductivity. For (i) we give a method and find the effective thermal conductivity for the model of the liver tissue, and for the point (ii) we present numerical and analytical treatment of the problem, and indicate the principal difference of heat propagation in linear and nonlinear media. In linear media, as it is well known, the range of the heat field is infinite for all times t > 0, and in nonlinear media it is finite. Pennes’ equation, which should characterize the heat propagation in the living tissue, is in general a quasi-nonlinear partial differential equation, and consists of three terms, one of which describes Fourier’s heat diffusion with conductivity being a function of temperature T. This term is just a point of our analysis. We show that a nonlinear character of the medium (heat conductivity dependent on the temperature) changes in qualitative manner the nature of heat transfer. It is proved that for the heat source concentrated initially (t = 0) at the space point, the range of heated region (for t > 0) is finite. The proof is analytical, and illustrated by a numerical experiment.

Heat pipes are devices, which transfer heat at a minimum temperature difference between evaporating and condensing phase. Operating temperature of heat pipe is determined by the working fluid and vacuum achieved during its production. This paper is focused on the determining the effect of the initial temperature of the ambient air to the performance characteristics of produced heat pipes. In general, the decrease in pressure decreases the boiling liquid. Based on this it can be presumed that achieving a lower temperature during production of heat pipe, the lower vacuum, the boiling point of working fluid while increasing ability of heat transport in various positions.
Knowledge of properties of agri-food and forest products is necessary to understand and predict their behavior in many processing operations like heating, cooling and drying in which heat and water transport affect the final product quality. It is difficult to represent properties of biomaterials in mathematical models to simulate the heat and water transport processes - shape of biomaterials is complex, material structure is non-homogeneous and anisotropic, and properties are functions of temperature and moisture content. Original algorithms and software components developed in earlier papers were modified and integrated to improve accuracy and efficiency of identifying, predicting and analyzing properties of agri-food and forest products. The integrated computer-aided approach was based on image analysis, geometry modeling and finite element analysis for solving coefficient inverse problems of heat and water transport. The approach resulted in more accurate predictions of investigated transport processes in biomaterials, and was more effective.
