Due to the failure of a single-story building, engineering measures were undertaken to determine the causes of the failure and select optimal remedial measures. The specific nature of the case limited the scope of possible investigations to the bare minimum. This article describes the measures implemented, which allowed for a rational assessment of the situation, the formulation of hypotheses regarding the causes, and the recommendation of corrective measures.
The complex interplay between soil characteristics and land management practices plays a crucial role in shaping terrestrial carbon sequestration potential, a process widely recognised as a key component of climate change mitigation strategies. In regions characterised by high pedodiversity, such as those found in Central Europe, integrated analyses combining detailed soil survey data with land cover classifications reveal pronounced spatial mismatches between the inherent soil carbon storage capacity and prevailing land use patterns. While forest and grassland ecosystems generally optimise carbon retention on organic-rich soils, the continuing expansion of agriculture, infrastructure, and urban areas often leads to the degradation and fragmentation of these natural carbon sinks. Such land use changes frequently reduce soil organic carbon stocks, weaken ecosystem resilience, and limit the capacity to buffer climate extremes. Despite their fundamental role in regulating biogeochemical cycles, the ecological value of soils as carbon reservoirs remains underrepresented in spatial planning frameworks, which still tend to prioritise short-term productivity over long-term ecosystem functionality. This oversight contributes to the vulnerability of carbon-dense soils to irreversible losses and undermines broader climate adaptation efforts. Shifting towards a land-use planning paradigm that systematically incorporates ecosystem service valuation - particularly carbon storage potential - would mark a transformative step in environmental governance. Using Kłodzko County as a case study, this research develops a transferable methodological framework that links soil typology with land management regimes, offering decisionmakers practical, spatially explicit tools to strengthen climate resilience through more sustainable and ecologically informed development strategies.
The spatiotemporal variation of vegetation cover in the mining areas of YSR Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques. By focusing on the years 2014, 2018, and 2023, the analysis provides insights into changes observed in water bodies, bare soil, sparse vegetation, moderate vegetation, and dense vegetation. The results reveal dynamic trends in land cover categories, highlighting the environmental impact of mining activities in the region. A significant decline in water bodies is observed, with the area reducing from 3.48 km2 in 2014 to 1.91km2 in 2023. This decrease raises concerns about the potential degradation of aquatic ecosystems, reflecting the ecological consequences of mining operations. The fluctuating pattern in bare soil areas, increasing from 37.64 km2 in 2014 to 40.37 km2 in 2018 and subsequently decreasing to 34.65 km2 in 2023, indicates the complex nature of land use changes and reclamation efforts in the mining regions. The study highlights a significant decrease in sparse vegetation from 6.88 km2 in 2014 to 4.43 km2 in 2018, followed by a substantial increase to 13.49 km2 in 2023. This suggests the resilience of vegetation in certain areas or potential reforestation initiatives. A consistent decline in moderate vegetation is observed, with the area decreasing from 5.72 km2 in 2014 to 4.25 km2 in 2023, indicating the lasting impacts of mining on plant health and ecosystem stability. Fluctuations in dense vegetation areas are noted, with a decrease from 2.31 km2 in 2014 to 1.72 km2 in 2023. This decline may signify habitat disruption and environmental stress resulting from mining operations. The consequences of these spatiotemporal changes in vegetation cover extend beyond the immediate landscape, impacting the ecosystem and environment. The reduction in water bodies and vegetation, coupled with an increase in bare soil, suggests potential biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and altered hydrological patterns. These changes pose significant challenges, affecting local fauna and flora and contributing to broader ecological imbalances. The study emphasizes the importance of employing sustainable mining practices to mitigate these adverse effects, ensuring the long-term environmental health and resilience of the region. Sustainable practices could include measures to protect and restore water bodies, prevent soil erosion, and promote reforestation and habitat conservation. By adopting such practices, the mining industry can help preserve biodiversity, maintain ecosystem services, and support the overall environmental sustainability of the YSR Kadapa district.
The soil environment plays a pivotal role in ecosystem sustainability, but industrialization and intensive agriculture contribute to heavy metal contamination. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has emerged as an efficient tool for detecting heavy metal concentrations in soils and sands. This study evaluates the influence of measurement duration on the accuracy of pXRF results across soil and sand substrates. Measurements were performed using a Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 device on meticulously prepared samples with durations ranging from 5 to 220 s. Results demonstrated that optimal analysis times varied between substrates: 180–220 s for soils and 140 s for sands yielded stable and accurate data. Prolonged durations improved the statistical reliability of concentrations, particularly for trace elements like nickel and arsenic, which required extended times for detection. Findings emphasize the importance of calibrating analysis duration to enhance pXRF accuracy and applicability in environmental and agricultural research.
Purpose: This study aims to identify management practices that enhance the provision of social services through co-production. It is based on the assumption that co-produced social services align with the sustainability paradigm. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study's objectives were achieved through a comprehensive literature review and a field survey conducted in December 2022. The survey utilized a questionnaire distributed to 357 local government units (LGUs) functioning as municipalities. To ensure a representative sample that included all types of units, stratified random sampling was employed. These LGUs were distinguished by their classification within a NUTS macro-region. The sampling strata were designed to ensure comparability across macro-regions, with each stratum reflecting the diversity of institutions, categorized into urban municipality offices, urban-rural municipality offices, and rural municipality offices. A limitation of the methodology is the potential for ambiguous interpretations of research questions, leading to responses that may not fully align with the actual conditions. Future research should aim to deepen these findings through qualitative methods. Findings: The study identified key determinants that influence the collaboration between municipalities and organizations involved in social service provision, whether in the market or civil sectors. Research Limitations/Implications: The study has several limitations. First, the reliance on self-reported data from LGUs may introduce bias, as respondents might present their practices more favorably. Second, the focus on Poland limits the generalizability of the findings to other contexts with different political, social, and economic conditions. Implications: The findings suggest that co-produced social services can foster sustainability. Sustainable co-production involves the continuous and meaningful engagement of service users in the design and delivery of services, moving beyond sporadic efforts to establish long-term relationships between professionals and service users. The sustainability of social service provision refers to the ability of involved organizations to adapt to changes in policy, funding, or the needs and preferences of service users. Originality/Value: The research underscores that building relationships with social service providers significantly contributes to meeting social needs effectively, fostering sustainable practices, and making communities more responsive to citizen needs. Enhancing sensitivity to citizen needs is a crucial expectation of municipalities.
Purpose: The article aims to discuss the use of digital tools, policy frameworks, collaboration, challenges, and future prospects related to natural values in the context of local governance. The main objective of this article is to explore the emergence and significance of natural values in the digital economy era and to examine how local communities are adapting to this phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: The advent of the digital economy has brought about transformative changes in various sectors, including local governance. This paper explores the emerging concept of "Natural Values" in the context of sustainable development within local government units (LGUs). Knowledge of natural resources and their condition is also the basis for advertising and marketing activities. This should become an important argument for the development of tourism or other industries with less pressure on the natural environment. In connection with the digital transformation of the global economy, local self-government is also increasingly using digital technologies. Findings: The study embraced an adaptive approach, recognizing that the natural values represent a novel phenomenon in the digital economy era, encompassing the recognition, preservation, and utilization of natural resources and ecosystems for the benefit of society. From the point of view of protection of natural resources, complete and up-to-date information and its availability are necessary for solving most tasks. Lack of relevant knowledge can lead to incomplete protection of valuable natural objects and territories, or negligence in the field of technical infrastructure or negative economic activity can cause adverse changes in the state of natural resources. Research limitations/implications: The implications of this study underscore the importance of stakeholder engagement and adaptive management for effective integration. Practical implications suggest the need for policy coordination, capacity building, and innovative incentive mechanisms to foster harmonious coexistence between natural values of territories and economic development digitalization. Originality/value: This study delves into the evolving role of LGUs in harnessing natural values, fostering sustainable development, and contributing to the broader discourse on environmental preservation and economic growth. These results could be especially interesting for researchers whose studies are interdisciplinary.

Military actions bring many negative consequences both in the short and long term. In particular, not only people suffer during armed aggression, but also the ecosystem and agrocenoses. This article examined the impact of bombardment of agricultural land with aerial bombs and established whether it was really contaminated with heavy metals. Samples were collected in two regions of Ukraine – Sumy and Chernihiv – from craters formed by bombing. The soil was taken directly from the bottom of the crater, at three points on its slope and 20 meters from the crater, in a conditionally undamaged area. The soil was analyzed in the laboratory using X–ray fluorescence analysis. The study analyzed the content of barium, zirconium, rubidium, zinc, and vanadium soil samples from a crater. The impact of aerial bombings on the concentration of heavy metals in the soils of the farms under investigation is unclear, it may be inferred. The concentration of barium, zirconium, and manganese on the crater slopes is higher in certain farms than in others, but overall trends do not show an obvious increase in these elements when compared to the control sites. However, several farms did not report significant shifts in the heavy metal composition, indicating how challenging it is to monitor whether explosions affect the concentrations of these elements. With a few exceptions, other heavy elements including strontium, rubidium, and zinc did not consistently exhibit excesses in the craters. Therefore, further, more thorough assessment of soil contamination should be carried out and methods for remediation should be developed.
The pressure control of the climate change and anthropogenic factors have consequences on the ecological systems, generating structural changes. The abiotic (i.e., water hydrology and hydraulics, sediment load, water physic-chemistry) and biotic (i.e., biodiversity, structure and functionality of food webs) characteristics of river-channels-lakes from deltas depend on several factors; however, the main driver of these characteristics is represented by the hydrologic connectivity with the main stem of the river. Floodplain lakes can be permanently, temporarily or disconnected with the main stem of the river producing interruptions in the transfer of fresh water and thus affecting benthic macroinvertebrates, by decrease in their population, diversity and even loss of sensitive taxa. Multidisciplinary investigations (hydrodynamics, sedimentological and ecological measurements and analyses) were made to investigate a river-channel-lake site type situated on the St. George branch formed by a cutoff meander (Mahmudia meander), a connective channel (Uzlina Canal) and a lake (Uzlina Lake) to observe how much the fresh water and sediment input to the delta depressions is affected by the structural changes of the meander physiography. The Mahmudia meander was rectified 40 years ago and the response of the channel consisted in a very fast silting of the former meander, currently receiving less than 5% of the upstream water and sediment discharge. The lateral connectivity with the deltaic depressions thought the lateral canals is compromised.

The primary aim of this study was to assess multi-year land use and land cover (LULC) changes utilizing GIS techniques within different landscape patterns of the Wakatobi National Park, Indonesia. The study area, i.e., the Kapota Island is one of the important regions where its terrestrial ecosystem consists of protected and developed zones. A spatial pattern analysis technique was implemented to classify and assess changes in LULC from 1990 to 2020 using Landsat 5, 7, and 8 images. As many as 275 to 414 samples were used in the maximum likelihood procedure, and their accuracy was assessed following field investigations to understand the landscape response to LULC changes. A number of landscape metrics were calculated to understand the landscape patterns in the study region. The results of the analysis show that vegetated areas have changed from 1,111.6 ha in 1990, then to 1,410.9 and 1,227.5 ha in 2010, and 2020, respectively, and this is related to the climate, as during the peak dry season, planting patterns change, leading to a reduction in green cover compared to the rainy season. The results also reveal that landscape metric indices vary considerably according to the variation of nature conditions, especially in the extreme climate events and human intervention. This becomes the implication of the condition where the landscape pattern is realistically fragmented, and complex, with lower connectivity and greater diversity. This approach has proven effective in interpreting human interventions in land utilization, as well as assessing the influence of extreme climate events on ecosystem sustainability in small islands. The higher the spatial resolution of spatial images, the better the interpretation of ecological landscape structure, function, and changes. This study gives an important insight into spatial regulation, especially in the designation of spatial pattern delineation as well as land utilization and ecosystem management at small islands with a dominant protected function.
This study aimed to explore the diversity of natural landscapes, faunae, florae, and touristic infrastructures in Taza province and their attractiveness to visitors. Equally, visitors and local populations were interviewed on the socioeconomic activities in the study area. Field visits were realized to delimit the ecosystems, road network, and infrastructures in Taza province. Transects were used to collect faunae and florae data, while a questionnaire was used to collect demographic features and socioeconomic activities in Tazekka National Park. The obtained results showed a high diversity of ecosystems, including forests, steppes, farmlands, and aquatic systems. The documented faunae and florae were diverse with 86 avian species and 16 mammalian species. Two birds Carduelis carduelis and Streptopelia turtur arenicola were classified as vulnerable, while Neophron percnopterus was classified as an endangered species. Two mammals Macaca sylvanus and Cervus elaphus barbarus were endangered. The road network was advanced with four types of roads (highway, national, regional, and provincial) and hotel infrastructures (hotels, restaurants, diesel stations) were diverse and well distributed in each corner of the area. The availability of natural resources and well-developed infrastructures are suggested to support sustainable activities, such as ecotourism, which are expected to add income to local populations. In fact, field interviews showed that the area, principally Tazekka National Park was visited by national and international tourists, which creates jobs for local residents. Equally, many other activities such as agriculture, pastoralism, transportation, and commerce were recorded among the inhabitants. Therefore, more advanced research is needed to characterize new ecosystems that deserve tourist visits as well as how to balance between human activities and the sustainability of natural resources.

The work presents the idea that in order to build a modern residential building that will ensure the broadly understood comfort of users, a fully conscious cooperation of the entire team of specialists is needed, from the design phase until the building is put into use. Each participant in this process should be aware that the primary goal is not only to meet standards and technical conditions, but to create an artificial ecosystem oriented to the needs of a specific person - the user of a given residential building. The paper focuses on selected aspects of user comfort and describes systems that are gaining popularity around the world and are able to provide it, but does not analyze the quality of space and ergonomics in an architectural sense. Solutions were proposed that could transform a residential building into a human-centric ecosystem. The concept of sustainable construction, the increasingly popular trend called bionics, intelligent facility management systems, a modern air-conditioning system and new materials introduced to the market are described. The above-mentioned solutions would make it possible to design an ecosystem that would interact with the user and positively influence the way a person feels in a given facility.

This paper introduces a domain-specific modelling tool called DSML4JaCaMo to develop belief-desire-intention (BDI) agents. The tool's design covers aspects of Jason, Cartago, and Moise from viewpoints that follow the meta-modelling approach. In this way, the DSML4JaCaMo enables graphical modelling of JaCaMo's multi-agent systems, providing comprehensive support for defining agents' beliefs, desires, and intentions (BDI) using Jason, specifying artifacts and their operations with Cartago, and outlining organizational structures and norms via Moise. The tool's operational semantics ensure seamless integration of these components, facilitating automatic code generation and artifact construction for creating JaCaMo-based system. The graphical syntax contributes to ease of use, making it accessible for novice and experienced developers. This work aims to enhance the JaCaMo ecosystem by offering a model-driven approach to provide abstraction on multi-agent system development, ensuring consistency, reliability, and scalability in the resulting implementations.

Over the past few decades, irrigation using groundwater has increased significantly. It has significant effects on local to regional climates as well as terrestrial energy fluxes, food production, and water availability. High cost of metering equipment installation as well as maintenance, privacy concerns, and existence of unregistered or illegal wells make it difficult to monitor irrigation water use on a large scale. This study suggests a unique approach to DL-based feature extraction and categorization for ecosystem-based water management in agricultural fields. Agriculture field water analysis data were used as the input in this instance, which was subsequently processed for noise removal, smoothing, and normalisation. Particle swarm-based convolutional architecture has been used to extract the processed data feature. Back regressive propagation based on incentive Q-learning is used to classify the extracted features. Experimental analysis has been carried out in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F-1 score, RMSE and mAPE. Proposed technique obtained accuracy of 92%, precision of 78%, recall of 83%, F_1 score of 76%, RMSE of 55% and MAPE of 57%.
Poprzez system zachęt i kar regulują stare nawyki i wprowadzają nowe.
The aggregate of various taxonomic groups of microorganisms colonising living organisms is known as the microbiome. The plant microbiome encompasses a wide network of biological, chemical and metabolic interactions between the plant and microorganisms (mainly algae, bacteria and protozoa). The relationships between microbes and peatland plants, particularly carnivorous plants, are a very interesting subject that is still little understood. Microbes colonising carnivorous peatland plants may be present in their traps or on the surface of the plant. Previous research on the relationships between the microbiome composition of carnivorous plants and the external factors influencing it directly and indirectly is still inadequate. There is a lack of review articles analysing the current state of knowledge regarding carnivorous plant-microbiome interactions. This review of the literature is a collection of data on the functioning of the microbiome of carnivorous plants growing in peatland ecosystems. In addition, it summarises the available information on host–microorganism relationships.
