The rapid development of technology in medicine, particularly in diagnostic imaging and treatment using ionizing radiation, has resulted in a significant increase in the role of the medical physicist in the clinics. Ensuring high-quality standards in medical services is highly dependent on the scope of education and qualification of employed medical physicists, but also the opportunities and requirements for their continuing education and minimum staffing levels. Like many other European Union countries that are members of the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), Ireland has been tasked with implementing and adapting the Council Directive (2013/59/EURATOM) in line with its clinical practices. This article addresses the description of the training and certification system for medical physicists and medical physicist experts (MPEs) in Ireland, the process of further training and the role of medical physics organisations in Ireland in ensuring high-quality medical physics standards in line with EFOMP recommendations.
Zastosowanie metod fizyki medycznej w medycynie odgrywa ważną rolę w diagnostyce i leczeniu chorób oraz ochronie zdrowia człowieka. Efektywne i kompetentne zastosowanie wiedzy z dziedziny fizyki medycznej w terapii i badaniach medycznych wymaga udziału fizyków medycznych (MP) i ekspertów fizyki medycznej (MPE).

The use of medical physics methods in medicine plays an important role in the diagnostics and treatment of diseases and the protection of human health. The effective and competent application of medical physics knowledge in therapy and medical research requires the participation of medical physicists (MP) and medical physics experts (MPE). This is particularly true in fields using ionizing radiation (such as radiotherapy, X-ray diagnostics and nuclear medicine), which is additionally emphasized by legal requirements for radiation protection. Technological progress and the growing complexity of the techniques used in these fields result in a sharp increase in the demand for medical physicists and entail the need to adapt their education and continuous professional development to the current and future techniques and standards used. The article describes the role of the Austrian Society for Medical Physics (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Medizinische Physik, ÖGMP) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Healthcare and Consumer Protection (Bundesministerium für Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz) in defining the standards of education and requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) for medical physicists (MP) and medical physics experts (MPE) in accordance with international guidelines.

This paper aimed at analytically investigating the simultaneous effects of the shear-lag and warping torsion on the performance of non-rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls. Under the concurrent action of shear and axial loadings, the induced warping deformation due to the shear-lag as well as the warping torsion has been accounted for in the elastic region. On the strength of the minimum potential energy principle, a general formulation has been derived for the stress distribution of non-rectangular RC shear walls. By introducing the appropriate geometrical assumptions, the established formulations have then been re-written for conventional T-, U-, and L-shapes RC shear walls. The veracity of the results is ascertained through a comparative study employing finite element simulations for a U-shaped wall, and good agreement has been achieved to an extent that the proposed analytical formulation is capable to, respectively, predict the axial deformation and stress distribution with an accuracy of 95 and 90%. Also, the findings for the U-shaped wall indicate that the shear-lag can significantly affect the axial stress distribution and cracking load, and neglecting the influence of this phenomenon can lead to an inaccurate and a non-conservative design. Moreover, the contribution of the shear-lag and warping torsion has separately been highlighted for the U-shaped RC wall considered in this study.

Laser devices have found recently wide range of applications like: industry, medicine, science, telecommunication, environment and military. Probability of exposition to laser radiation that can be hazardous is very small, especially when personnel using laser devices wear protective clothes, especially protective eyewear. Hazards arising from exposition to laser radiation are related separately to eye and skin. Hazards may be caused by direct beam, as well as reflected and scattered beam (depending on laser class). Laser radiation in the whole optical range (180 nm - 1 mm) causes thermal effect in exposed tissue (presently lasers devices generate radiation in the range of 180 nm - 40 µm). As thermal effects we can mention: tissue temperature increase, erythema, coagulation, vaporization, carbonization, photoablation and electromechanics phenomenon. Occurrence of those effects depends on laser radiation power density, wave - length, type of exposed tissue (eye and skin) and exposition time. The highest level of radiation that does not cause any damage to exposed tissue is called Maximal Permissible Exposure (MPE). In Poland, values of MPE to laser radiation are included in Regulation of Ministry of Labour and Social Policy on maximal permissible concentrations and intensities of hazardous factors in Labour environment. In Europe, values of MPE to laser radiation are included in annex no. II to Directive 2006/25/EU. The article presents eye and skin hazards related to the exposition to laser radiation and statistical data on accidents while operating laser devices. New criteria of eye and skin hazards evaluation arising from laser radiation, included in Directive 2006/25/EU have been presented. Those criteria have to be implemented into Polish law until 27 April 2010. Rules for defining values of the Maximal Permissible Exposure (MPE) in dependence of: laser radiation wavelength, device work regime (CW or pulsed), exposure time have been presented. Values of correction factors and time points necessary for MPE defining have been explained. Article includes charts showing variations of MPE values as a function of exposure time, radiation wavelength and angular subtense of a source for different ranges of optical radiation (UV, VIS, IR). The article presents comparison of laser's radiation hazard evaluation criteria contained in regulation of Ministry of Labour and Social Policy (on maximal permissible concentrations and intensities of hazardous factors in Labour environment) and EU Directive.
