The article presents an acoustic analysis of a model research room, designed and constructed as part of the infrastructure of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. The facility was built as a lightweight steel structure filled with sandwich panels, located inside a measurement and research hall, which allowed for the elimination of environmental noise and provided optimal conditions for conducting measurements in a low acoustic background. Based on design documentation and manual measurements, a three-dimensional geometric model of the room was created using Odeon Acoustics software. Acoustic simulations were carried out based on this model, with actual material parameters assigned. To verify the model, in situ measurements were conducted using a point sound source and six receiving points. The results obtained from the computer simulations showed very high agreement with the measurement data, confirming the accuracy of reproducing real conditions in the simulation environment.

W celu weryfikacji modelu wykonano pomiary in situ z zastosowaniem punktowego źródła dźwięku oraz sześciu punktów odbiorczych.
Understanding wave dynamics is vital for effective coastal management, maritime navigation, and disaster risk planning. This study evaluates the performance of four widely used wave prediction models the shore protection manual (SPM), coastal engineering manual (CEM), Sverdrup-Munk-Bretschneider (SMB), and Pierson-Moskowitz (PM) in forecasting wave height and period at Galesong Beach, south Sulawesi. The results reveal strong seasonal dependencies, with the highest wave energy occurring during the December – February monsoon period. Statistical validation using root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), bias, and coefficient of determination (R2) shows that the SPM and CEM models offer the most accurate wave height predictions, with RMSE values of 1.44 m and 1.61 m, respectively. In contrast, the SMB and PM models display larger errors, particularly in wave period estimation, limiting their suitability for this coastal setting. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting wave prediction models based on regional climatic conditions. The study highlights the need for seasonal calibration and the use of high-resolution datasets to enhance forecasting performance, providing a scientific basis for improved coastal planning and hazard mitigation.
A physical model of a foundry degassing unit (FDU) uses a simplified approach to melt modelling and degassing. While maintaining the realistic geometry of the rotor, the shape and size of the refining ladle, and the type and amount of inert gas, the original melt is replaced by water. The experimentally evaluated quantity is the degassing efficiency of the melt. Assessing the flow and pressure characteristics in the refining ladle is very complicated experimentally, and it is necessary to use numerical modelling. Numerical modelling of multiphase flow allows the identification, comparison, and quantification of individual flow and pressure characteristics, which can be verified by mutual correlation on basic experimental measurements. Validation of the numerical model is crucial both from the point of view of comparing different states and from the point of view of more advanced multiphase simulations based on this basic model. This article aims to describe the basic numerical model of multiphase flow using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method for the physical model of the FDU and its verification against experimental measurements.
This study uses the Anand constitutive model to predict how commercially pure Grade 2 titanium behaves during thermoplastic deformation, with the goal of making it more suitable for load-bearing medical implants. Although titanium alloys like Ti6Al4V are commonly used in implants, there are concerns about the release of toxic ions, which encourages the search for safer options like pure titanium. To strengthen pure titanium, this research focuses on thermo-mechanical processing (TMP). The study combines experimental compression tests (conducted at 400–600°C and strain rates of 0.01–1.0 s-1) with computer simulations based on the Anand model. The model can describe important material behaviours such as strain hardening, dynamic recovery, and sensitivity to temperature and strain rate. Originally developed for soft metals, the Anand model was successfully adapted to pure titanium and showed high accuracy in predicting material behaviour at elevated temperatures and moderate strain rates. Some prediction errors at 400°C were likely due to incomplete dynamic recrystallisation. The best fit of our model to the experimental results was achieved for the temperature 600°C and strain rate 0.01 s-1 with adjusted R-square equal 0.988 and root mean square error equal 3.941. The model was further tested under specific conditions (450°C, 550°C, strain rate of 0.5 s-1) and achieved flow stress prediction errors below 8%. In summary, this work provides a reliable and efficient tool for optimizing TMP processes, reducing the need for costly trial-and-error methods, and supporting the production of patient-specific implants made from pure titanium.
The paper describes the architecture and the use case of the developed Modelbox system for sensitivity analysis (SA), uncertainty analysis (UA) and the subsequent optimization of industrial processes. The proposed solution addresses the most common practical and technical problems encountered by researchers and engineers when performing sensitivity analysis. It combines the functions from the numerical toolbox with a simulation management system. Maintaining usability and a good user experience while managing complex investigations of time-consuming industrial process simulations is a very important feature of the system. Several improvements were introduced to optimize the computation time of analysis/modelling tasks, including the automatization of distributed calculations, persistent, transparent caching of simulation data and duration estimations from collected statistics. The system has the ability to perform remote, parallel, asynchronous computations of both analytic algorithms and numerical simulations. The system is dynamically scalable horizontally by using serverless computing endpoints and thus it can be easily adapted to the user’s current needs in a flexible way. Modelbox provides web-based access to analysis/modelling tasks from sampling, SA/UA, optimization to metamodelling. It is extended with numerous interactive visualization components for effective results control. In addition, to access data from the completed analysis, the system supports convergence tracking for SA estimates and intermediate optimization results. The process of controlled cooling of rails was considered as a case study. The formulated optimization task was to find a combination of process parameters that ensures a minimum volume fraction of bainite along with required interlamellar spacing and optimal homogeneity of hardness. Different sensitivity analysis methods were used to evaluate the significance of all variables with respect to their influence on the model output.

A two-dimensional mesoscale model based on the concept of hybrid cellular automata was used to study phase transformations in a complex phase steel during continuous cooling. This model enables simulation of the decomposition of austenite into ferrite, bainite, and martensite, accompanied by calculations of volume and grain boundary diffusion of carbon. In effect, as a result, one can observe the morphology of simulated microstructures, corresponding carbon segregation as well as microhardness distribution. These results with the kinetics of austenite to ferrite phase transformation and predicted values of the complex phase steel hardness are the subject of model validation. A series of dilatometric experiments were carried out with constant cooling rates in order to construct a CCT diagram and validate the presented model. The convergence of simulated results with empirical outcomes was confirmed quantitatively using a dedicated goal function and data summaries in the table and graphs. However, some qualitative and quantitative discrepancies in terms of microstructure morphology are indicated which was possible thanks to applying a wide range of different validation parameters of the model. It is emphasized how crucial is the use of appropriate validation methodology.

Dwuwymiarowy mezoskalowy model oparty na koncepcji hybrydowych automatów komórkowych zastosowano do badania przemian fazowych w stali wielofazowej podczas ciągłego chłodzenia. Model ten umożliwia symulację rozpadu austenitu w ferryt, bainit i martenzyt wraz z obliczeniami objętościowej i granicznej dyfuzji węgla.

The first Polish road bridge made of FRP composites and its FEM analysis as well as the behaviour under static and dynamic proof tests have been presented in the paper. The theoretical and experimentally determined stiffness and strength of the hybrid FRP – concrete span, load distribution factors and dynamic behaviour have been compared. The detailed shell – brick numerical model of the real bridge has been used for FEM theoretical analysis. During the proof tests the girder’s deflection, FRP and concrete strains and span accelerations have been measured. The proof load tests have revealed the sufficient carrying capacity and good transverse and longitudinal stiffness as well as the proper dynamic behaviour of the bridge. Moreover the FEM model of the span has been quite well validated against the measured results. FEM analysis and proof tests confirmed that FRP composite as the modern and innovative structural material can be widely utilised in bridge construction as an alternative to common materials as steel and concrete.

A three-dimensional numerical model was applied to simulate the Black Sea Water (BSW) outflux and spreading over the North Aegean Sea, and its impact on circulation and stratification–mixing dynamics. Model results were validated against satellite-derived sea surface temperature and in-situ temperature and salinity profiles. Further, the model results were post-processed in terms of the potential energy anomaly, ϕ, analyzing the factors contributing to its change. It occurs that BSW contributes significantly on the Thracian Sea water column stratification, but its signal reduces in the rest of the North Aegean Sea. The BSW buoyancy flux contributed to the change of ϕ in the Thracian Sea by 1.23 × 10-3 W m-3 in the winter and 7.9 × 10-4 W m-3 in the summer, significantly higher than the corresponding solar heat flux contribution (1.41 × 10-5 W m-3 and 7.4 × 10-5 W m-3, respectively). Quantification of the ϕ-advective term crossing the north-western BSW branch (to the north of Lemnos Island), depicted a strong non-linear relation to the relative vorticity of Samothraki Anticyclone. Similar analysis for the south-western branch illustrated a relationship between the ϕ-advective term sign and the relative vorticity in the Sporades system. The ϕ-mixing term increases its significance under strong winds (> 15 m s-1), tending to destroy surface meso-scale eddies.
There are several methods and techniques for measuring the parameters and forecasting the errors in the hydrological models. In this study, semi distributed Soil and Water Asseeement Tool (SWAT) model and SWAT-CUP (CUP – Calibration and Uncertainty Programs) have been applied using SUFI2 program. After collection of data, the whole Talar watershed located in the central section of the Alborz Mountains, north of Iran was separated into 219 hydrological response units (HRU) in 23 sub-watersheds. In order to improve the simulation parameters and obtain better correlation of observed and simulated values, the sensitive parameters were validated to obtain finally the acceptable value of both R2 and Nash–Sutcliffe (NS) coefficients equal to 0.93. Final P-value and t-state were also estimated for sensitive parameters. As a result, the CN2 parameter, which was critical in the initial stage of this research was replaced by the SOL-K parameter (electrical conductivity saturated soil layers) as a critical parameter in the later stage. Results of this study show that the SWAT model can be an effective and useful tool for the assessment and optimal management of water and soil resources.

Istnieje kilka metod i technik pomiaru parametrów oraz przewidywania błędów w modelach hydrologicznych. W prezentowanej pracy zastosowano modele SWAT i SWAT-CUP z użyciem programu SUFI2.
This study presents an application of the SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) in two meso- -scale catchments in Poland (Upper Narew and Barycz), contrasting in terms of human pressures on water quantity and quality. The main objective was multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation of the model against daily discharge, sediment and nutrient loads as well as discussion of challenges encountered in calibration phase. Multi-site calibration and validation gave varied results ranging from very good (daily discharge) to acceptable (sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus loads in most of gauges) and rather poor (individual gauges for all variables) in both catchments. The calibrated models enabled spatial quantification of water yield, sediment and nutrient loads, indicating areas of special concern in terms of pollution, as well as estimation of contribution of pollution from different sources, indicating agriculture as the most important source in both catchments. During the calibration process a number of significant issues were encountered: (i) global vs. local parametrization, (ii) simulation of different pools of water quality parameters in reservoirs and streams and (iii) underestimation of NO3-N loads in winter due to farmers practices. Discussion of these issues is hoped to aid SWAT model users in Poland in a deeper understanding of mechanisms of multi-variable and multi-site calibration.

W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono zastosowanie modelu SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) w dwóch zlewniach w Polsce (Górnej Narwi i Baryczy), kontrastowych pod względem antropopresji w odniesieniu do ilości i jakości wód. Podczas kalibracji modelu napotkano następujące problemy: (1) identyfikacja parametrów globalnych w odniesieniu do lokalnych, (2) symulacja różnych form parametrów jakościowych w zbiornikach wodnych i ciekach oraz (3) niedoszacowanie ładunków azotanów w okresie zimowym spowodowane praktykami rolniczymi. Dyskusja nad poruszonymi aspektami umożliwi innym użytkownikom modelu SWAT lepsze zrozumienie mechanizmu wielopunktowej i wieloparametrycznej kalibracji.

Over last decade, road safety attracts increased attention of EU authorities. EU makers believe that new regulations forcing producers to fulfill extremely difficult safety requirement will help to diminish annual road fatalities. One of the latest of such ideas is standardization of side impact resistance of child seats. Since engineers cannot do anything else but to follow the regulations, number of projects aimed toward improvement of child seats side impact resistance has started. The problem is not easy and thus high-end engineering tools have to be used in the design process. One of such tools – a necessity, if one wants to truly understand structure behavior under dynamic working conditions – is numerical analysis of structures. The very basis of effective usage of this technique is reliable model of an analysis subject. This paper presents detailed information on numerical FE model of child seat and its validation based on test results. Effect of modeling techniques and dynamic material behavior on the obtained results is also discussed. Difficulties that arose during real life test are pointed and its influence on FE modeling is showed up.
A half-century of forest inventory research involving statistically-valid field measurements (using statistically representative sample size and showing confidence limits) and well-validated forecasting methods are reviewed in this paper. Some current procedures overestimate global and large-scale forest biomass, carbon storage, and carbon sequestering rates because they are based on statistically-invalid methods (errors in estimates are unavailable and unreported), or they fail to consider key dynamic characteristics of forests. It is sometimes assumed that old-growth forests can serve as fixed, steady-state storage of biomass and carbon for indefinitely long periods, but it is shown by both modelling and remote sensing that forests are dynamic systems, the state of which can change considerably over as short a time as a decade. Forecasting methods show that maximum biomass and carbon storage in some important forest types occurs in mid-succession, not in old-growth. It is proposed, therefore, that realistic biomass and carbon storage estimates used for carbon credits and offsets be determined as the statistical mean minus the confidence interval and that practical carbon sequestering programs include specific timeframes, not indefinitely long periods of time.
W artykule przedstawiono metody wyznaczania częstości i postaci drgań.

Paper presents methods of determination of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Basic method is to create analytical model, which, in case of plate, calculates partial differential equation of forth order. Other method to determine vibrations is to scan surface of object with laser using laser vibrometer. Comparing results acquired with both methods one can see good correlation of frequencies (i.e. frequency calculated from analytical model and determined from experiment). Possible differences can result from lack of precise information about value of density and Young modulus of steel plate. Small error confirm reliability of laser vibrometer as a useful tool for verification of theoretical model and for study of natural frequencies and mode shapes of examined object. Knowledge of modal frequencies and mode shapes in later phases of research works will be used to actively control the vibrations as well as for detection of surface failures.
Analysis of accidents has found driver distraction to be a significant cause of accidents on the highways [1]. Therefore, studying the causes of driver distraction that impact its risk level is needed for a better understanding of accident occurrences. There is general scarcity of research in this field with no established research framework to study driver distractions. This paper proposes a modular research framework for conducting a driver distraction study on Polish city highways. The framework contains guidelines for distraction studies for wide range of cost and time intervals such as a quick, low cost study like analysis of existing accident databases maintained by the cities to relatively higher cost, longer duration study involving field data collection, statistical modeling, and analysis. A city may choose one or more modules to suit their study requirements including statistical and simulation tools to assess and validate the historical or empirical result. The framework is based on the careful modifications and revisions of an earlier transit bus driver study conducted in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A., and results from this research are presented for purposes of illustration.
In order to verify the correctness of the numerical model the experimental tests of the 9 mm Parabellum projectile impact onto the Armox 500 armour steel plate were carried out. The behaviour of the projectile for the impact velocities 100 m/s, 126.5 m/s, 134.3 m/s, 136.4 m/s and 143.8 m/s was examined. After firing tests the deformation of the mushroom, the length of the projectile and the depth of the hole of the deformed projectile (DHDP) were measured. The model curve for determination of the projectile deformation work Edp in function of its shortening ?L was elaborated. The 3D numerical simulations of the 9 mm Parabellum projectile impact onto the Armox 500 steel plate for the velocities obtained during the experimental tests with the use of the Ansys - Autodyn v12.1.0 program were performed. The difference between the dimensions of the projectile deformation achieved during the 3D numerical simulations and the experimental tests amounted to XM = 0.1÷4.6%, XL = 1÷7.9%, XDHDP = 6.7÷47.3%, for the mushroom, length of the projectile and the depth of hole of the deformed projectile (DHDP) respectively. The 2D numerical simulations considering the friction coefficients between the coat and core of the projectile (XM = 0.1÷6.1%, XL = 0.1÷4.6%, XDHDP = 0.6÷24.1%) were performed.

Several numerical methods were studied as means of solution to a penetration problem. The Element Free Galerkin (EFG), Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods were considered. The above mentioned algorithms implemented in the LS-DYNA code were applied. Additionally, the mesh density was taken into consideration. The reference case assumed an average node to node distance of 1 mm. The finer and coarser mesh densities were analysed. The full 3D models of the projectile and target were developed with a strain rate and temperature dependent material constitutive relations. An impact of 12.7x108 mm B32 armour piercing projectile on a 80 mm thick block of 7017 aluminium alloy was modelled. The results obtained by a computer simulation were validated and then verified by experimental data. The study of the erosion criteria involves defining the most efficient and reliable way of removing the failed and extremely deformed parts of the projectile and targets. Generally, EFG method applied to solve the perforation/penetration problems can be characterized as a very stable, reliable and effective method.
