Projektowanie swobodnych form strukturalnych wymaga jednoczesnej kontroli geometrii, pracy konstrukcji, doboru materiału i sposobu realizacji. Zakres literatury dobrano według jawnych kryteriów tematycznych, czasowych i jakościowych, obejmując głównie aktualne publikacje dotyczące projektowania parametrycznego, generatywnego, optymalizacji konstrukcyjnej, struktur free-form oraz integracji BIM. Wykazano, że wartość parametryzacji polega nie na generowaniu złożoności formalnej, lecz na integrowaniu decyzji architektonicznych, konstrukcyjnych i realizacyjnych w jednym modelu projektowym.

The design of freeform structures requires simultaneous control of geometry, structural performance, material selection, and implementation methods. In such systems, parameterisation is not only a method of shape modelling, but also a tool for organising the relationships between form, load-bearing logic, object information and feasibility. The aim of this article is to present the logic of parameterisation in structural engineering and the architecture of freeform structures as a method integrating geometric modelling, structural analysis, optimisation, and the BIM environment. The article is a narrative problem-oriented literature review. The sources were selected according to explicit thematic, temporal and quality criteria, with emphasis on recent publications on parametric and generative design, structural optimisation, freeform systems and BIM integration. It is shown that the value of parameterisation lies not in generating formal complexity, but in integrating architectural, structural and implementation decisions within a single design model.

This study analyzes the evolution of working standards in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the redefinition of the role of the BIM Manager in the era of digital transformation. The starting point is the identification of a cognitive gap, i.e., the discrepancy between the exponential growth of data and the limitations of human perception. The conclusions are based on a narrative review of over 100 publications, with artificial intelligence models used in the content synthesis process. The analysis proves that implementing AI requires prior digital hygiene in accordance with the ISO 19650 standard and the conversion of data into a machine-readable format. Attention was also drawn to the phenomenon of the productivity paradox, showing that the automation of erroneous or inefficient processes only leads to the faster generation of defects. The paper outlines a vision of the future in which OpenBIM standards become the language of algorithm communication and AR technology ensures continuity of quality control. At the same time, the analysis emphasizes that the success of the transformation does not depend solely on technology, but on the soft and leadership skills necessary to overcome process resistance. The whole is crowned with a forecast of the evolution of the BIM Manager into a Knowledge Architect and transformation leader who oversees autonomous processes in a human-in-the-loop model.

This article presents a study of the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the early architectural design phase. Its purpose is to verify whether these tools speed up the development of a concept and how to increase control through simple parametric models and a clearly defined decision loop including a human. The study was based on a course taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology by a team of teachers from the Chair of Architectural Design and the Department of Pro-Environmental Design. The course was attended by 62 students in 25 teams. The course was divided into four blocks (type exploration and visualisation, automation of functional layout generation, insolation analysis and life cycle assessment) - the first of these is described in detail in this article. The course combined parametric modelling with a text- and image-driven image generator. The results of student surveys conducted at the end of the course indicate that AI was useful at the concept stage for 88% of them; the main barriers were limited predictability, repeatability and hardware requirements. The best results were produced by a combination of a clearly defined designer’s intention with a simple 3D model and a critical selection of results. The course authors recommend integrating AI into the curriculum as a way to learn to work with the process (formulating criteria, controlling the course, evaluating the results), rather than only operating result-focused tools.

The contemporary urban environment is undergoing rapid transformation due to global climate challenges and the increasing demand for improved energy efficiency, reduced material consumption, and enhanced user comfort. Architecture and construction—fields deeply intertwined with resource management and environmental quality—must adopt innovative and sustainable design strategies. One of the most promising approaches is bionics (biomimetics), an interdisciplinary field that draws on principles from biological systems to inform design practices. Nature has long served as a source of architectural inspiration— from the symbolic and organic forms of Art Nouveau to contemporary projects enabled by digital technologies that allow for precise modeling of biological structures. However, modern biomimetics extends beyond aesthetics. It encompasses function, structure, and adaptive processes, integrating insights from biology, engineering, materials science, computer science, and architecture to develop nature-inspired systems that are more efficient, durable, and sustainable. Key technologies in this domain include parametric and generative design, environmental simulation, digital fabrication, and smart materials, all of which enable the creation of structures that respond dynamically to external stimuli. Additionally, the growing trend of biophilic design—often combined with biomimetics—contributes to the development of spaces that are not only energy-efficient but also promote the psychophysical well-being of users. This article aims to present the current state of knowledge regarding the application of bionic solutions in architecture and construction. Selected case studies are discussed to illustrate how biomimetic strategies have achieved high environmental, aesthetic, and functional performance. The article presents examples of rod structures based on minimal forms, as well as structures with topology inspired by nature and parametrically generated. It also explores specific architectural implementations and identifies challenges and future directions for this rapidly evolving field.

Industry 4.0, also known as digital manufacturing, is a new revolution in the manufacturing industry that employs tools such as reverse engineering, additive manufacturing, and design optimization techniques such as generative design. This most recent technological advancement can be used to enhance existing designs and products for performance and efficiency with the power of computation. Reverse engineering is a technique or approach in which one tries to understand, using deductive reasoning and little to no understanding of how something works, such as how a previously created device, process, system, or piece of software performs a function. It can be used to collect visual data to recreate models of desired objects using 3D scanning methods. This study used these various advances to optimise a 3D-printed brake pedal. It entailed reverse engineering the brake pedal using 3D scanning, followed by optimising the brake pedal design for mass and shape using generative design. The 3D printing process was optimised through a parametric study of the process parameters which include Type of Material, Layer Thickness, Infill Density, Infill Pattern, and Raster Angle. The result of experiment is revealed that material type (33.63%), Infill density (20.48%) and Layer Thickness (20.41%) significantly influencing the tensile strength of the 3D printed specimen. It also showed that Infill density (31.06%), material type (21.54%) and Layer Thickness (20.41%) are the most influencing process parameters of Impact strength. The findings were unified and used to create a Lightweight Polymer Brake Pedal optimised for High-Performance Applications in Electric Vehicles.

Generative design is used to efficiently generate design solutions with powerful computational methods. Generative design based on shape grammar is currently the most commonly used approach, but it is difficult for shape grammar to formally analyze the generated pattern. Graph grammar derived from one-dimensional character grammar is mainly used for generating and analyzing abstract models of visual languages. However, there is a significant gap between the generated node-edge graphs and the representation of shape appearance. To address these problems, we propose an improved generative design approach based on virtual-node based continuous Coordinate Graph Grammar (vcCGG). This approach defines a new type of grammatical rule named node transformation rules to convert nodes into shapes with node transformation applications. By combining node transformation applications and L-applications in vcCGG, we can generate a node-edge graph as the structure of the pattern through L-applications, and then draw the shape outline, next adjust the positions of these shapes, thus relating abstract structures and the physical layouts of visual languages. At the end of the paper, we provide an example application of this approach: generating an illustration from Emma Talbot using a combination of node transformation applications and L-applications.

This review explores how generative design is combined with machine learning (ML) to achieve additive manufacturing (AM) and its societal transformative effect. Generative design uses complex algorithms to automate the process of designing best-fit designs, mass customization, and customization to suit specific customer requirements with high efficiency and quality. The scalability and predictability of artificial intelligence (AI) models make handling huge data easy and enable scale-up of production without compromising quality. This paper also focuses on how generative design can help accelerate innovation and product creation because it empowers designers to play in a wider space of design and provide solutions that cannot be reached with traditional techniques. AI integration with existing production processes is also vital to real-time manufacturing optimization—further increasing overall operational effectiveness. Additionally, the emergence of sophisticated predictive models like gradient boosting regression shows how ML can enable better accuracy and robustness of 3D printing operations to achieve quality standards of the outputs. This paper ends with what generative design and ML hold for the future of AM and how designing continues to be improved and modified to match changing industry requirements.
