This study analyzes the influence of FDM printing temperature on the wear properties of the PA-12 polyamide under dry friction conditions and in the presence of an abrasive slurry. Tests were carried out using the ball-cratering method at three extrusion temperatures (255 °C, 260 °C, and 265 °C). Under dry friction conditions, the highest wear rate was recorded for samples printed at 255 °C, while increasing the printing temperature to 260 °C and 265 °C progressively reduced the wear intensity. A similar decreasing trend was observed when friction occurred in the presence of an abrasive slurry, where higher printing temperatures led to significantly lower wear rates. This behavior can be attributed to improved interlayer bonding, enhanced structural cohesion, and reduced material porosity at elevated processing temperatures, which collectively increase the resistance of the material to both adhesive and abrasive wear mechanisms. Analysis of wear mechanisms revealed adhesion dominance under dry friction and abrasive wear in the presence of abrasive particles. The results confirm the significant impact of printing parameters on the tribological durability of FDM-manufactured components.

W warunkach tarcia suchego najwyższą szybkość zużycia odnotowano dla próbek drukowanych w temperaturze 255°C, natomiast podniesienie temperatury druku do 260°C i 265°C spowodowało stopniowe zmniejszenie intensywności zużycia. Podobną tendencję spadkową zaobserwowano w przypadku tarcia w obecności zawiesiny ściernej, gdzie wyższe temperatury druku prowadziły do znacznie niższej szybkości zużycia. To zachowanie można przypisać lepszemu wiązaniu międzywarstwowemu, zwiększonej spójności strukturalnej i zmniejszonej porowatości materiału w podwyższonych temperaturach przetwarzania, co łącznie zwiększa odporność materiału na mechanizmy zużycia adhezyjnego i ściernego. Analiza mechanizmów zużycia wykazała dominację adhezji w tarciu suchym oraz zużycia ściernego w obecności cząstek ściernych. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają istotny wpływ parametrów druku na trwałość tribologiczną elementów wytwarzanych metodą FDM.

3D printing technology—particularly thermoplastic-based methods such as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)—has gained popularity in both industrial and home settings. A key element of the 3D-printing process is the preparation of the printer’s batch files—so-called g-code files—which contain all the information needed for correct execution of the print. Traditional methods of generating g-code rely on deterministic algorithms that do not always yield optimal results in terms of print quality (dimensional accuracy of the geometry), build time, material consumption, and functional parameters such as the mechanical strength of the printed part. In recent years, interest has grown in using artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize these processes. AI algorithms, including machine learning and deep learning, have the potential to analyse and optimize g-code in ways that surpass traditional approaches, offering higher print quality, greater energy efficiency, and shorter production times. This work explores the modification of print parameters recorded in g-code files through the use of AI, demonstrating that the modified files produce prints with improved mechanical strength. A large language model (ChatGPT-4o) was used to selectively modify nozzle temperature parameters in g-code files, based on prompt engineering and filament datasheets. Tensile samples made from Easy PLA and Easy PET-G filaments were printed and tested in three-point bending, in accordance with ISO 14125. The samples were divided into three groups: unmodified (reference), modified every 2 layers, and modified every 3 layers. The results showed an increase in the average breaking force for PLA samples by 2.7% and 3.0%, and for PET-G samples by 4.3% and 9.9%, respectively. Comparative analysis of the g-code files confirmed that the AI introduced cyclic temperature changes (increase in M104 commands from 3 to 30), improving interlayer adhesion. The flexural strength improvements were consistent with these modifications. In conclusion, AI-driven g-code optimization offers a simple and effective way to improve the mechanical properties of printed objects without altering geometry or increasing material usage. This approach holds great potential for advancing additive manufacturing processes, particularly in the context of Industry 4.0.

Purpose: The work aims to propose a comprehensive design framework for additive manufacturing and apply it to a case study of the height adjuster handle of a car. The aim is to provide designers and engineers with a practical example of how the framework can be used to design a complex part for additive manufacturing. The article also aims to demonstrate the potential benefits of additive manufacturing in the automotive industry, such as improved performance, reduced times, and cost savings. Additionally, the article aims to compare the developed framework with existing design for additive manufacturing (DFAM) methodologies and highlight its unique features and advantages in designing the height adjuster handle. Design/methodology/approach: The study used qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The first phase of the study involved a systematic review of existing DfAM methodologies and a critical analysis of their strengths and weaknesses. Based on this analysis, a new DfAM framework is developed, which aims to address the limitations of existing frameworks and provide a comprehensive design approach for additive manufacturing. The second phase of the study involved applying the developed framework to a case study of a complex automotive part - a height adjuster handle. The design requirements of the height adjuster handle were identified based on the principles of DfAM, and the part was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software and optimised topologically using ANSYS software. In the third phase, the performance of the height adjuster handle designed using the developed framework was compared with a part manufactured with injection moulding technology. The comparison was based on various performance criteria, including mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and production time and cost. Findings: The findings of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed design framework for additive manufacturing (DfAM) in producing a complex automotive part with improved performance characteristics and reduced lead time. Research limitations/implications: Although the results of the study provide important insights into the effectiveness of the developed DfAM framework for producing a complex automotive part, there are some limitations to the research that should be considered, such as the case study involved the design of a single part, and the results may not be generalisable to other parts or applications. Further research is needed to validate the effectiveness of the DfAM framework for a broader range of automotive parts. for the automotive industry. The developed DfAM framework can be used in the FDM technology. It can be used as a decision aid in the manufacturing of FDM parts in order to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the production process for complex automotive parts. Originality/value: The value of the study is the development of a novel DfAM framework and the demonstration of its effectiveness in a case study. The proposed framework can be used as a reference for future research. It can also provide practical guidance for industry professionals seeking to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their additive manufacturing processes.

Increased interest in fused deposition modeling (FDM) resulting, for example, from its use in the production of utility models determines the undertaking of research on mechanical and rheological properties of materials. Mechanical and rheological properties of models made of materials used in FDM technology depend on technological parameters. In this paper, the effect of 0° and 90° print orientation on stress relaxation was analyzed. Additionally, the usefulness of the rheological model to describe the relaxation curve was evaluated. Stress relaxation tests were performed by tensile testing. The five-parameter Maxwell-Wiechert model was used to describe stress relaxation. The tests showed little effect of print orientation on the rheological parameters of the five-parameter model. The Maxwell-Wiechert model showed a very good approximation to the stress relaxation curves.

Wzrost zainteresowania technologią osadzania topionego materiału (FDM), wynikający m.in. z zastosowania jej do produkcji modeli użytkowych, wymusza podjęcie badań nad właściwościami mechanicznymi w tym reologicznymi materiałów. Właściwości mechaniczne (i reologiczne) modeli wytwarzanych z materiałów stosowanych w technologii FDM zależą od parametrów technologicznych. W prezentowanym artykule poddano analizie wpływ orientacji wydruku 0° i 90° na relaksację naprężeń. Dodatkowo oceniono przydatność modelu reologicznego do opisu krzywej relaksacji. Testy relaksacji naprężeń wykonano poprzez próbę rozciągania. Do opisu relaksacji naprężeń zastosowano pięcioparametrowy model Maxwella-Wiecherta. Badania wykazały niewielki wpływ orientacji wydruku na parametry reologiczne modelu pięcioparametrowego. Model Maxwella-Wiecherta wykazał bardzo dobrą aproksymację do krzywych relaksacji naprężeń.

The following paper discusses the studies of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with glassy carbon (GC) particles. The conducted research focused on the processing properties of the material. Samples were made from extruded HDPE filament reinforced with GC. The granulate for extrusion was made by depositing GC particles on the surface of HDPE granules in ethylene alcohol. The granulate was subsequently extruded in the form of a filament (1.6 mm in diameter). The filament was cut into smaller pieces, which were then prepared and examined using a light microscope. Density measurements and quantitative analysis were performed to examine the amount of glassy carbon in the samples. The measurements showed about a 1% volume of glassy carbon in the reinforced filament. The melt flow index was measured for the HDPE filament and HDPE filament reinforced with GC. The viscosity curves for the neat HDPE and the composite filament were determined. The reinforced HDPE filament was characterized by slightly lower flow parameters; however, the difference between the results was insignificant for material processing. The maximum feed rate of the prepared filament for the FDM 3D printing process was evaluated by mathematical modeling. The results show that both the prepared materials have a similar printing capability as commonly used PLA, only the composite filament should have a 1.4% lower feed rate than the neat HDPE.

Wyniki badań mogą być przydatne do projektowania wszelkiego rodzaju przegród i obudów termoizolacyjnych wytwarzanych metodą szybkiego prototypowania, pracujących w stosunkowo niskich temperaturach (< 100°C).

Przedstawiono badania nowego modelu numerycznego służącego do przewidywania właściwości mechanicznych struktur wytwarzanych w technologii fused deposition modeling (FDM).

This article presents a new numerical model for predicting the mechanical properties of the structures produced using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. The model implemented in the finite element method represents internal structure of the investigated material, generated based on manufacturing parameters such as layer height, raster spacing or orientation of subsequent layers. In addition to numerical analysis, the experimental investigation of the samples made of ABS-M30 (Stratasys Ltd.) were performed and longitudinal elasticity modules in three directions were determined and compared with the results obtained from the numerical model. Differences in experimental and numerical values of longitudinal modules ranged from 0.79 % to 6.19 % depending on the load direction. Such low error values allow to state that the presented model is suitable for estimating the stiffness of the components manufactured by Fused Deposition Modeling.

Model ten opracowano w programach Global Mapper i Rhino 3D. Następnie został on wydrukowany na drukarce 3D z wykorzystaniem technologii FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling). Artykuł opisuje zasady opracowania takiego modelu oraz wady i zalety zaproponowanego rozwiązania.

Flat studies showing terrain (e.g. in form of maps) do not fully reflect its nature. Planning or design projects are definitely better represented in three-dimensional space. Previously used “sand tables”, especially popular in military applications, are expensive and uncomfortable to use due to their large size. In addition, they are modifiable only to a small extent and do not provide such accuracy as traditional maps. With the development of modern model relief techniques, a spectrum of the possibilities for development of customized spatial models (defined as models of the surrounding reality, mapped in the appropriate scale in three dimensions), has increased. The aim of this article is to present the possibilities of using 3D printing for the visualization of a mountain. Based on the digital terrain model (DTM), a model of a part of the Tatra Mountains was developed. It was established by DTM data processing and printing on a 3D printer using the FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology. This article describes the principles for developing such a model and the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed solution.

Numerous experimental studies, including experiments performed by the authors, have shown that the part orientation during layer deposition has a very strong in-fluence on final strength of a product manufactured by additive Fused Deposition Technology. The paper presents the results of tensile, bending and impact strength tests performed on samples of various orientations, made out of ABS material using FDM technology. The results of these tests allowed discovering a unique phenomenon – with the changing orientation, not only the values of strength indexes change, but macroscopic material behavior under load as well. The transition between a “yield point” and “brittle” material usually happens in a certain range of orientation values, named a critical orientation by the authors. The paper indicates supposed ranges of critical orientation for various types of loads

As a part of activities related to this subject, it was necessary to develop 3D-CAD research gears, which were the basis for producing physical models made using incremental FDM manufacturing technology. The created models were verified in order to determine the accuracy of resulting geometry. Then modifications were introduced to models so as to increase their accuracy. On this basis, in an iterative process, compensation coefficients were calculated to ensure reduction of defects in geometry with respect to a nominal 3D-CAD model.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technology, which allows to obtain models of complex geometry without any tooling, directly from the digital CAD representation. An important parameter of FDM process is orientation of part in the working chamber during manufacturing - it influences a number of technical and economical coefficients of the end product. The paper describes experimental research aimed at examining the influence of the orientation on tensile strength of ABS models produced with this technology. Test samples of various orientation were prepared and subjected to tensile tests. Also, a number of reference samples were prepared with injection molding of the same ABS material.
