Kluczową rolę w absorpcji antropogenicznych emisji CO2 do atmosfery odgrywają morza i oceany pokrywające około 70% powierzchni globu.

Achieving the 50% reduction in CO2 emissions set by the European Union by 2050 is impossible without developing technologies for capturing carbon dioxide and its safe storage. As our everyday lives are increasingly influenced by public, scientific and political debates on global warming (from extreme weather phenomena to melting glaciers), which often result in legal regulations, appropriate technologies should be developed to eliminate the causes of these phenomena. Therefore, reducing anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, which have a significant impact on the greenhouse effect, is one of the most important problems to be solved in the field of broadly understood environmental protection (Mazurkiewicz et al., 2005). The seas and oceans, covering approximately 70% of the globe's surface, play a key role in the absorption of anthropogenic CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. For several years, the authors have been conducting research related to the transport of excavated material from great depths and have presented several concepts (Filipek W., Broda K.: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023). In this article, the authors, following the global trend regarding the management of CO2 of anthropogenic origin, attempted to use it as a working medium for transport from the seabed. In their considerations, the authors focused mainly on the usable energy stored in the analyzed working medium. The authors are aware of the negative effects of carbon dioxide on the marine environment. Nevertheless, we found it necessary, taking into account future research on the use of this working medium, to first consider the so-called open system, i.e. free exchange of CO2 between the transport module and the surroundings. From our point of view, this is important information that is a reference point for future concepts of using this medium in the so-called closed system, i.e. assuming that there is no transmission of CO2 to the marine environment.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic lasting for few years, the interest in the exploitation of deposits lying at the bottom of seas and oceans at great depths has not been waning. Many new concepts for the exploitation of sea deposits have been developed. Many consortia were established, interested in mining activities in seas and oceans. And although the most advanced venture of Nautilus-Minerals has not been successful so far, it has made a huge leap forward in terms of research and technology. The exploitation on an industrial scale is most likely to start in the coming years, especially in the waters of the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). Recently, for example, the Cook Islands authorities have granted three licenses for this type of activity. In international waters though, we must, unfortunately, still wait for legal solutions satisfying all interested parties. The exploitation of shelf deposits is successfully being carried out with various methods in many regions around the world (Karlic, 1984; Depowski et al., 1998; Abramowski, Kotliński, 2011; Niedoba 2015, SPC 2013; Sharma, 2017); however, reaching for deposits of massive polymetallic sulphides or polymetallic nodules lying at great depths places considerable demands on scientists and engineers. Among the heaviest ones is the development of a method of transporting spoil from the bottom to the sea surface. For several years, the authors have been conducting theoretical and experimental research on new concepts of transport from the seabed, the results of which were presented in numerous publications (Filipek W., Broda K .: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, Broda, Filipek, Tora 2023). While considering various concepts of transport from the seabed using an autonomous module, we paid attention to energy losses during the exchange of the working medium between the autonomous transport module and the surroundings (sea water). In the articles (Filipek W., Broda K. 2018, 2019) we focused on the positive aspect of this exchange, but nevertheless these are energy losses. In this publication, the authors analyze what part of this energy can be used (in autocompression) and what impact it has on the energy balance of the transport module.
For the past 50 years, Poland has been actively involved in the research on marine mineral resources. Since 1987, research cruises and documentation of the polymetallic concretions (Fe-Mn) in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone on the Pacific seabed have been performed as part of the Interoceanmetal project. In 2016, the IOM presented a report to the ISA on the past research and new technologies for processing concretions, together with an economic analysis regarding the process of development of concretion deposits. In 2018, ISA granted Poland the right to search for polymetallic sulphides in the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time, a government project called PRoGEo was launched to encourage the reconnaissance search for marine minerals. This opens a new chapter in the history of Polish participation in the search for marine mineral deposits. Poland is an active participant in international organization, created based on the Convention on the Law of the Sea. Initially, Polish involvement was limited to legal matters, and then extended to geology of the sea and marine mineral deposits. A more active role of Poland in marine exploration during the last years requests to familiar Polish geologists with the current stage of knowledge about marine resources. The current state of knowledge of marine mineral deposits, though still requiring further research, is sufficient to plan their development in the near future. This paper argues that the deposits of polymetallic sulphides, Co-rich crust, gas hydrates and polymetallic concretions will likely be developed first.
In recent years, we have observed a great interest in the exploitation of marine deposits by various methods of mining and transport to the surface. However, obtaining natural resources deposited at greater depths such as polymetallic nodules and seafloor massive sulphides - SMS creates a lot of challenges for both scientists and engineers. The solutions developed so far, unfortunately, have so far been characterized by high energy consumption. For several years the authors have been conducting theoretical and experimental research on new concepts of seabed to surface transport. The results of them have been presented in previous publications. This publication presents the results of the continuation of research on the concept of construction and operation of an autonomous transport module (submitted for printing). It focuses on a theoretical analysis of the change in gas phase density in the processes occurring during operation of the transport module intended for transport from the seabed. For this purpose, a reduced form of the van der Waals equation was used in the form of a third-degree equation for parameters interested from the point of view of the transport module.
The growing interest in the exploitation of marine deposits has resulted in the development of research on deposits and technologies for their exploitation. For several years, the authors have been dealing with one of the most important problems in the deep sea mining of mineral deposits, namely transport from great depths. This publication presents theoretical considerations regarding the use of calcium carbide as a source of energy for transport from the seabed. The authors proposed three lines of the course of the decomposition reaction of calcium carbide and then analyzed the possibility of their use. From the obtained results it can be concluded that the maximum depth of use of a simple CaC2 distribution is about 1 km, while using the method proposed by the authors based on the "balance of forces" (using an additional medium) it is possible to apply this method to any depth occurring on Earth.
The great interest in the exploitation of sea deposits has in recent years resulted in the creation of many consortia conducting research on various methods of mining and transport to the surface. Exploitation of the shelf areas of crude oil and gas as well as solid minerals is successfully carried out in many places around the world using various methods. More and more often, however, we want to obtain natural resources found at great depths such as polymetallic nodules and massive polymetallic sulphides. This puts much greater demands on scientists and engineers. Unfortunately, solutions developed so far are characterized by high energy consumption. For several years, the authors have been researching new concepts of transport from the seabed. In previous years the authors presented theoretical research results of using a new method involving the use of pyrotechnic materials as a source of energy in transport from the seabed from large depths and experimental ones with the use of potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate in a controlled pyrotechnic reaction and they compared three conceptions of transport of dredge spoil from the point of view of energy demand. This publication presents the results of the continuation of research, this time on the concept of building an autonomous transport module and its operating principles. The construction of the laboratory stand and the way of conducting experiments are discussed. The results of experimental research are presented, which confirm the possibility of using the discussed concept in transport from the seabed.
