The results of research on the structures of the GZM public space and the behavior and expectations of the metropolis residents towards this space allowed for an attempt to formulate urban guidelines for the creation of green areas in the metropolis with strong city-forming properties, which is a change in the paradigm of green areas. In the conditions of such a change, many of the new green areas may gain socially important features of places of innovation. The introduction of the comprehensive idea of the Green Transformation of the City (GToC) seems to have the potential to renew city space and reverse suburbanization tendencies towards reurbanization. In the conditions of the Green Transformation of the City, it is possible to implement the SDGs to their full extent - an improvement the social sphere will remain in a positive feedback loop with the improvement of the environment, which will constitute a holistic turn towards life sustaining development.
Miejskie oraz zielone przestrzenie publiczne mają kluczowe znaczenie dla jakości życia i konkurencyjności miast. Zaspokajają oczekiwania mieszkańców i poprawiają ich poziom zadowolenia z życia w mieście. W badaniu przeanalizowano związek między zwyczajami i oczekiwaniami mieszkańców w Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii w Polsce (skrót GZM) a nowoczesnymi modelami rozwoju miast. Prezentowane badania dotyczą głównie sekcji z projektu: Przestrzeń publiczna i Krajobraz. Badania ankietowe zostały zrealizowane na próbie 3301 respondentów metodą CAWI. Badania wykazały rozbieżności między preferencjami i oczekiwaniami mieszkańców GZM a kanonami wartości i celami polityki przestrzennej funkcjonującymi w obiegu profesjonalnym i administracyjnym. Byłoby to synergiczne z rozwojem zielonej infrastruktury (aspektem środowiskowo-przyrodniczym). Skłania to do rewizji modelu przekształcania i regeneracji miast GZM.

Urban and green public spaces are crucial to the quality of life and competitiveness of cities. They meet the expectations of residents and increase their level of satisfaction with the city. This study examines the relationship between the habits and expectations of residents and contemporary models of urban development in the Upper Silesian–Dąbrowa Basin Metropolis (GZM) in Poland. The aim of the study was to determine the extent to which contemporary models of creating high-quality, competitive cities align with the preferences and expectations of residents. The study was conducted as part of the project titled ‘Challenges of Public Spaces and Social Cohesion of the Upper Silesian–Dąbrowa Basin Metropolis’, which encompasses five related areas. The research presented herein concerns primarily public spaces and landscape. Survey research and a literature review were conducted on a sample of 3,301 respondents using the CAWI method. The results of this study reveal a discrepancy between the preferences and expectations of GZM residents and the values and objectives of spatial policy implemented by professionals and administrators. Residents prioritize direct access to greenery, open spaces, and privacy over the need for integration and city-forming spaces, which are perceived as less important. They focus on green areas irrespective of their quality, whereas urban planners and developers emphasize the need for shared public spaces with an urban vibe. However, the psychological significance of green areas for residents leads to a greater demand for their integration into urban areas, which could advance synergistically with the development of green infrastructure (environmental/nature aspect). This prompts a need for a revised model of transformation and regeneration of GZM cities.

This paper discusses the environmental characteristics of assets of the public transport systems in Górnośląsko-Dąbrowska Metropolis. The public transport is served by a number of companies. This poses the problem of integrating their behaviour in a coherent manner for environment protection. The Metropolis includes regions highly populated with good road networks as well as small localities which generates small transport demands. The transport potential is assessed and categorised in relation to its impact on the environment. The volume of emission of pollutants and the severity of their presence in the environment are summarised. Conditions of the functioning of the constituents of the systems were analysed, accounting for their contribution to pollution as well as health hazards cases.
Artykuł podejmuje ważną kwestię roli wyrobisk eksploatacyjnych surowców skalnych w krajobrazie obszarów zurbanizowanych. W obszarach tych występuje znaczny deficyt terenów przydatnych do różnych form zagospodarowania. Zaprezentowane badania oparto na obserwacjach i pomiarach licznych obiektów (kamieniołomów, piaskowni, glinianek i mniejszych wyrobisk surowców skalnych), analizowanych w dużych skalach przestrzennych. Syntezę wyników przedstawiono kartograficzne w wielu ujęciach. Opracowanie stanowi element naukowej dyskusji nad rolą krajobrazową terenów zdewastowanych przez górnictwo powierzchniowe, które cechuje znaczący potencjał i istotne walory przyrodnicze i kulturowe.

This article deals with the important issue of the role excavations left after the extraction of rock raw materials play in the landscape of urban areas. Such areas suffer from a considerable deficit of land usable for various purposes. This problem is discussed on the basis of the GZM Metropolitan Area (the Silesian Province, Poland). Extensive fieldwork carried out on numerous excavation sites has enabled the author to analyse and to classify them into several types according to their role in the landscape. The reclamation of surface excavations remains an open issue. Undoubtedly, their present and future role in shaping the landscape of the Upper Silesian Conurbation is crucial, but it still remains under-researched. This study is based on the observation and measurement of numerous facilities (quarries, sandpits, clay-pits and smaller excavations of rock raw materials), analysed on a large spatial scale. A synthesis of the results is shown in numerous maps. This study contributes to the scholarly discussion on the role in the landscape of land devastated by surface mining, which possesses considerable potential and is valuable from the perspective of nature and culture.
