This article provides an overview of cellulose-based materials used as sorbents for removing pollutants from water. The paper discusses the main groups of pollutants, such as heavy metals, dyes, biogenic compounds, oils, and so-called emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and PFAS compounds. Conventional sorbent materials and their limitations are also presented, highlighting the need to seek alternative solutions. Cellulose, as a renewable, biodegradable, and easily chemically modifiable raw material, represents a promising direction for development in sorbent technology. The article analyzes the impact of various cellulose modification methods on its sorption properties and contaminant removal mechanisms. It is shown that appropriate functionalization of the material significantly increases its efficiency and selectivity toward specific contaminants. Cellulose-based materials show great potential in water treatment applications. At the same time, the need for further research is emphasized, particularly under real-world conditions and in the context of process scaling and sorbent regeneration.

The use of washed mineral waste from wastewater treatment plants as a substitute for natural sand may provide a significant economic benefit in the construction sector. The goal of the study was to assess the possibilities of use of this waste in hydraulic structures, with particular regard to their physical and chemical properties, heavy metals contents and their potential release to the environment. Due to the lack of legal regulations specifying permissible heavy metal contents in materials used for the construction of flood embankments, the research results were compared with limit values for soils exposed to pollution risk, leaching limits for non-hazardous and inert waste, thresholds for substances particularly harmful to the aquatic environment, and the surface water quality classification criteria (Classes I and II) set forth in Polish legislation. The conducted laboratory analysis indicated that the washed mineral waste has no negative impact on the environment. At the same time, for some of the samples, it was found necessary to restrict their use at depths of 0–0.25 m below ground level in residential areas, due to exceedances of cadmium concentrations in solid samples (>2 mg/kg d.m.) and copper concentrations in aqueous extracts (>0.01 mg/L) relative to the limit values for surface water quality classes. This may limit the practical use of this waste. However, the analysis of its particle size distribution indicates that washed mineral waste can be used for the construction of flood embankment bodies, provided that the required compaction parameters are achieved.

The aim of the study was to determine the content of Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd and Fe in dust from bus stops in Białystok and their degree of contamination. Road dust samples were collected from 28 bus stops located on expressways, near low-rise buildings, shopping centres, and in green areas. Geochemical background levels were exceeded by three (Zn) to nine (Cu) times. In the case of Ni and Cr, the exceedance was six to eight times. Sources of heavy metals in dust were identified. Correlation, FA, and CA results showed homology between elements associated with car tyre abrasion, brake wear and corrosion of vehicles and road infrastructure. The impact of heavy metals on the health of residents was determined. The hazard quotient (HQ) showed that ingestion was the dominant route of exposure for people exposed to dust particles, followed by skin contact and inhalation. According to the health risk assessment, the overall non-carcinogenic risk at the bus stops examined in Białystok was low.

For the experimental study, solutions of EDTMP, NTA, and TA were selected for HM extraction. The influence of extraction time and the ratio of extractant concentrations on extraction efficiency was evaluated. The analysed soil was artificially contaminated with selected HM (Cu, Zn, Pb). Chemical extraction of HM using chelating agents resulted in a reduction of HM concentrations in the soil to the permissible limit values set by the Council Directive 86/278/EEC. The most suitable chelating agents under the conditions of this experiment were the combined chelating agents NTA and TA with an extraction time of 60 minutes. Cu and Zn concentrations were reduced to permissible limits even when using the lowest concentration of NTA and TA (0.1 M), while the 0.5 M concentration and 60-minute extraction time resulted in the lowest concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soil - 48 mg/kg, 74 mg/kg, and 78 mg/kg, respectively - and the highest extraction efficiencies of 93.3 %, 91.1 %, and 95.2 %, respectively. The combined chelating agents NTA and TA showed higher extraction efficiencies than the synthetic organic chelating agent NTA alone at different extraction times. The variation in extraction efficiency for the different combined chelating agents is presented as follows: for NTA and TA (0.5 M:0.5 M), Pb > Cu > Zn, and for EDTMP and TA (0.5 M:0.5 M), Cu > Pb > Zn. For chelating agents of synthetic origin only, the series were: NTA - Cu > Zn > Pb, and EDTMP - Cu > Pb > Zn.

Heavy metal pollution is an important environmental issue in urban and industrial areas because these elements persist in the environment and may cause ecological and health problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the atmospheric deposition of heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Cr) in the Prishtina region (Kosovo) using mosses and lichens as bioindicators. A total of 24 moss samples (Hypnum cupressiforme) and 9 lichen samples (Cladonia portentosa) were collected between June and August 2025. The plant samples were digested using aqua regia and analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Multivariate statistical methods, including basic statistics, Pearson correlation, and principal component analysis (PCA), together with spatial distribution analysis of heavy metals, were applied to facilitate clearer data interpretation. To evaluate the degree of heavy metal contamination at individual sites and across the entire region, four pollution indices (CF, PLI, Eri, and PERI) were calculated. The results indicate that the study area is contaminated with nickel, chromium, and lead, mainly due to mining activities at the open-pit ferronickel mines in Golesh, emissions from the ferronickel smelter in Drenas, and heavy traffic along the Prishtina-Peja highway. The ecological risk index (Eri) for nickel in moss samples ranged from 6.00 to 336, while in lichen samples it ranged from 6.00 to 42.0. Copper showed Eri values of 6.67-16.67 in mosses and 3.33-5.00 in lichens. For lead, Eri values in moss samples ranged from 3.33 to 53.33, whereas in lichens they were below the detection limit. Based on moss data, 9 locations (39.1 %) were classified as moderately polluted, while 14 locations (60.9 %) fell into the unpolluted to moderately polluted category. In lichen samples, 3 locations (37.5 %) were classified as unpolluted and 5 locations (62.5 %) as unpolluted to moderately polluted. Overall, both the concentrations and pollution indices of heavy metals in mosses were 2-7 times higher than those observed in lichens at the same sampling locations. The smaller number of lichen samples compared with moss samples reflects their limited presence at several sampling sites, which represents a limitation of the study.

This study aimed to assess the immobilization of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in hardened self-hardening slurries (SHS) made with municipal solid waste fly ash (MSWFA) and conventional coal fly ash (CCFA) intended for cut-off wall construction. Five SHS mixtures were prepared using tap water, Portland cement, sodium bentonite, CCFA, and MSWFA. The microstructure and phase composition were analyzed by SEM and XRD. After 28 and 90 days of curing, samples were leached according to PN-EN 12457-4:2006, and metal concentrations in eluates and digested components were determined by flame AAS. The results were compared with regulatory limits for heavy metal content in leachate and soil. CCFA exhibited the highest Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn contents, while MSWFA showed the lowest total heavy metal content. The eluates displayed an alkaline pH (≈12.5) and high salinity. Pb and Cd releases exceeded non-hazardous waste limits, while other metals remained below these limits. All tested metals demonstrated high immobilization levels (≥99.99%) regardless of recipe or curing time. Dense C-S-H matrix formation with hydrocalumite contributed to metal immobilization. SHS could potentially be a safe and environmentally friendly method for stabilizing and solidifying fly ash in its raw form. Heavy metals were strongly bound within the slurry structure, however, further research is needed.

CCFA charakteryzował się najwyższą zawartością kadmu, miedzi, ołowiu i cynku, podczas gdy MSWFA wykazywał najniższą całkowitą zawartość metali ciężkich wśród analizowanych materiałów antropogenicznych. Przeprowadzone badania wskazują, że SHS mogą stanowić potencjalnie bezpieczną i przyjazną środowisku metodę stabilizacji i solidyfikacji popiołów lotnych w formie nieprzetworzonej.

Elemental analysis of alcoholic beverages provides valuable insights into their safety, quality and authenticity. The elemental profile of wines, beers, ciders and whisky is shaped by raw materials, environmental conditions, technological processes and interactions with equipment or packaging. Particular attention is paid to toxic elements such as Pb, Cd, As, and Hg, as well as Cu, Zn, and Fe, which are essential but may adversely affect the quality when present in excess. Analytical strategies rely on spectrometric techniques, including FAAS, GF-AAS, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS, complemented by XRF and SEM-EDS for specific applications. These methods, combined with chemometric tools, such as PCA, LDA, or PLS-DA, enable discrimination of beverages by origin, type and production technology, and support the detection of adulteration. Regulatory frameworks established by OIV, WHO and national authorities define maximum allowable concentrations of selected elements, although gaps remain for some beverage categories. Overall, the integration of advanced analytical techniques with multivariate data analysis provides a robust framework for ensuring consumer safety, verifying authenticity and supporting the development of alcoholic beverages with consistent quality.

Removing toxic heavy metals from ecosystems remains a significant challenge, necessitating the exploration of environmentally friendly solutions. Phytoremediation stands out as one of the most effective, sustainable, and eco-conscious methods. In recent decades, phytoadsorption has emerged as a promising, cost-effective, and benign approach for detoxifying contaminated aquatic environments from heavy metals. In our study, we investigated the use of dry pomegranate peels as a biosorbent to extract lead (Pb²⁺) ions from aqueous solutions through the phytoadsorption process. Various amounts of dried biomass (5.0, 2.0, and 0.5 grams) were tested under different shaking speeds (400, 600, and 800 oscillations per minute) and contact times. The results demonstrated that dried pomegranate peels could remove up to 83.2% of lead ions from 250 ppm aqueous solutions at room temperature and neutral pH. Additionally, the bioadsorption capacity of the pomegranate peels reached up to 28.8 mg/g. These findings suggest that pomegranate peels have the potential to serve as effective bioadsorbents for the removal of lead heavy metals from polluted aquatic systems.

Aim: The aim of this work is to provide a synthetic assessment of the effectiveness of available technologies for cleaning and decontaminating firefighters’ protective clothing, with particular emphasis on processes carried out in liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2). The article also demonstrates their impact on user safety and material durability. Methodology: A systematic review of literature from 2018 to 2024 was conducted, covering scientific publications, technical reports and normative documents on the cleaning and decontamination of firefighters’ protective clothing. The search was conducted in the Scopus, ScienceDirect and PubMed databases and in technical report repositories (UL Solutions, Centexbel, Ghent University), using combinations of keywords related to chemical contaminants (WWA, SVOC, heavy metals), microbiological contaminants (biofilm) and cleaning processes (water washing, hydrocarbon cleaning, LCO2). In the analysis, only studies containing quantitative data or detailed descriptions of cleaning process parameters and tests assessing the impact of cleaning on material properties, such as durable water repellency (DWR), fibre integrity and mechanical parameters, were included. The review covers the results of studies conducted by leading research centres (Centexbel, UL Solutions, Ghent University, North Carolina State University) and an analysis of the requirements of ISO 23616, NFPA 1851 and PN-EN 469 standards in terms of cleaning effectiveness, process validation and maintenance of the functional properties of firefighters’ protective clothing. Conclusions: The review allows for a comparison of the effectiveness of cleaning and decontamination technologies for firefighters’ protective clothing and identifies their limitations in terms of user safety and material durability. The collected data clearly indicates that water-based technologies often do not provide complete chemical and biological decontamination and may also accelerate the degradation of the materials. Processes carried out in liquid CO2 (LCO2) are highly effective at removing PAHs, SVOCs, heavy metals and biofilm while maintaining the protective properties and durability of materials, making them one of the most promising technologies in the context of maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE) for firefighters. The collected results may support the development of national operating procedures and a certification system for decontamination processes serving the needs of the State Fire Service, the National Fire Service and rescue units operating in industrial plants.

Metodologia: Przeprowadzono systematyczny przegląd literatury z lat 2018–2024, obejmujący publikacje naukowe, raporty techniczne i dokumenty normatywne dotyczące czyszczenia i dekontaminacji odzieży ochronnej strażaków.

Przy zastosowaniu uwodnionej formy BC spadek zawartości metali ciężkich w gnojowicy wynosił ok. 55% – w przypadku jonów ołowiu; ok. 53% – chromu; ok. 30% – molibdenu; ok. 30% – miedzi; ok. 6% kadmu; ok. 5% – żelaza; ok. 5% – cynku; i ok. 1% – niklu, w stosunku do próby kontrolnej.

W prestiżowych eko-certyfikatach zostały określone progowe zawartości przynajmniej najbardziej toksycznych metali ciężkich (As, Cd, Hg i Pb).

To protect consumers from exposure to heavy metals present in textile and leather products, many legal regulations have been introduced. Prestigious eco-certificates specify the threshold levels for at least the most toxic heavy metals (As, Cd, Hg and Pb). However, even the best-formulated legal regulations cannot provide full protection for users of these articles. Analytical control with a set of well-developed and validated analytical procedures using modern instrumental techniques is essential. Such conditions are met by standardized analytical procedures preferably published in ISO and EN standards. This paper discusses analytical procedures described in ISO and EN standards and implemented in the set of Polish Standards. To better familiarize readers with this topic, the discussion was preceded by a brief description of the instrumental techniques used. The presented analytical procedures make it possible to determine the total content of heavy metals and their bioaccessible fraction.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer was synthesized using 2-pyrrolidinoacetonaphthone (MPY) as a photoinitiator, and the obtained PMMA was used as an adsorbent of Fe3+ ions. Under optimal conditions (0.2 g PMMA, 15 mg/L Fe3+, 40 min contact time, 30°C, pH 10, 150 rpm) 99.98% Fe3+ ions were removed from natural water samples. The obtained results indicate that UV-synthesized PMMA has the potential not only to remove Fe3+ but also other heavy metals and may constitute a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment.

Industrial and human activity has a significant impact on the environment, contributing, among others, to the increase in the pollution of natural waters, including heavy metals. Their source may be sewage from the metallurgical, electroplating or mining industries. Particularly dangerous to the health and life of living organisms are, among others: Cr(VI), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Fe(II) and Ni(II), because they have a significant ability to accumulate in soft tissues. Physicochemical methods, electrochemical, membrane and sorption processes or ion exchange are used to remove such pollutants. Applying the principles of waste-free economy in a closed circuit, selected biomass is increasingly used as a sorbent. The paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effect of mixing intensity on the efficiency of the sorption process under established process conditions in connection with the assessment of the degree of dispersion of solid phase particles in the reactor.

Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn i Cu. Do strącenia metali ciężkich wykorzystano środki strącające oraz flokulanty mineralne, dzięki którym we wszystkich wariantach uzyskano znaczne obniżenie wartości stężeń analizowanych metali ciężkich.

Industrial sewage, including oil emulsions, that reaches receiving waters can disrupt the functioning of surface water biocenoses and affect groundwater quality. Therefore, their purification/pre-purification is justified, allowing, among other things, to remove heavy metals contained in them. Oil emulsions are compositions of immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other in the form of small droplets. This article presents an optimisation method for neutralising and precipitating heavy metals from industrial sewage. This method involves determining the effect of pH and mixing time on the concentrations of selected heavy metals, such as Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn and Cu. Precipitant agents and mineral flocculants were used to precipitate the heavy metals, significantly reducing their concentrations in all variants.

The study focused on the determination of heavy metals originating from anthropogenic sources to assess the environmental and health risks to city residents. The single pollution indices showed the key pollutants in soils such as Zn, Cd, and Pb. Contamination level assessment and the toxicity of pollutants were done by the multi-elemental pollution indices. They showed heavy pollution of tested soils with high ecological risk. The correlation analysis and the principal component analysis model were utilized to identify the relative contribution of metals to soil pollution and provide information about the potential sources of metals. The most important for elemental composition in soils in Wrocław are three emission sources: leaching of pollutants from the materials used in the roof coverings and guttering, domestic heating with fossil fuel combustion and other solid materials, leaching of the air pollution including of the road traffic. The health risk analysis shows that ingestion and then dermal contact are the greatest exposure pathways for humans. The health risk was low, although children have greater risks than adults.

In the presented experiment, we tested the influence of irrigation with different proportions of leachate collected from the leachate sump of municipal solid waste landfill in combination with LED light on the capacity of model plant to remove some heavy metals (HMs) (As, Cr, Cd, Ni and Hg) from the soil and to store them in the biomass of model plant Sinapis alba L. There were six variants irrigated either with distilled water (control) or with a combination of distilled water and leachate (20 %, 50 %, 75 %, 90 %, 100 %). The variants were divided into two groups: A (LED) and B (no LED) and concentrations of HMs and their interdependence (concentration of HM in the soil and in the plant) were monitored in the soil/plant samples. The measured values of HMs concentration in the soil and plant samples did not show a positive influence of LED light on the phytoextraction of HMs. A significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) sorption of HM by the model plant was demonstrated only in Cd and Hg where the difference between Group A and Group B was approximately 10 mg kg–1. Furthermore, enrichment coefficient, EC, was established for the respective HMs and experimental variants. EC values > 1 indicating “high accumulator plants“ were measured for Cd and Hg for all variants of Group A. In Group B, EC values > 1 were recorded for Cd and Ni only in the control variants, and for Hg in all variants with the application of leachate (20 % → 100 %).

This study explores the use of waste materials such as activated fly ash (AP1) and its mixture with activated carbon (AP2) for rainwater treatment. The adsorption of heavy metals (Ni, Pb, Cu) and bisphenol A (BPA) was tested under varying adsorbent doses, contact times, and solution pH. Fly ash was chemically activated with NaOH, while activated carbon was obtained from spent filter cartridges and similarly treated. Both adsorbents were characterized for surface area, porosity, pore size distribution, and point of zero charge. Activation significantly increased the surface area of fly ash and combining it with activated carbon further improved adsorption performance. AP2 showed the highest removal efficiencies, indicating a synergistic effect of the two materials. The results demonstrate the potential of reusing industrial and municipal waste in rainwater treatment, supporting sustainable development and circular economy practices.

Pervious concrete is an innovative material solution that can serve to improve local retention in urban areas. Taking into account the possible contamination of surface runoff, the study examined whether water-permeable concrete has the ability to filter prepared solutions from organic and inorganic pollutants. As part of the work, a two-stage research plan was developed. In the first part, the composition of surface runoff in Warsaw was analyzed in terms of the properties that are key to the quality of water discharged into the native soil (total suspended solids, selected heavy metals, oil-derived substances). Then, a synthetic surface runoff was developed which was filtered through cylindrical samples of water-permeable concrete with different permeability coefficients. Based on the results, it was found that water-permeable concrete allows significant reductions in the concentration of all analyzed pollutants, including heavy metals (lead and zinc).

Military activities affect soil conditions through contamination with metal-containing debris, such as projectile and rocket fragments, as well as bullet remnants, leading to the release of heavy metals and subsequent environmental contamination. The goal of our study was to examine the concentration of heavy metals in areas affected by shelling and to assess their impact on the population of soil microorganisms, including those exhibiting heavy-metal resistance. Metal concentrations were analyzed via an XRF analyzer. The study involved examining both soil samples and missile fragments. Microorganisms were isolated using Koch’s and Hungate’s roll tube methods. The concentration of iron in soil was the highest, reaching 8,1991.3±132.8 ppm. The concentration of other metals (Ni, Cu, Cr) varied between 407.5±8.0 ppm and 4.6±2.1 ppm. Cobalt compounds were not detected at the projectiles impact sites. The number of aerobic chemoorganotrophic bacteria in all soil samples was in the range of (1.8±0.2) × 105 – (3.7±0.2) × 105 CFU/g, while chromium-resistant bacteria were, on average, an order of magnitude fewer. The number of anaerobic microorganisms ranged from (1.4±0.2) × 105 to (2.6±0.2) × 105 CFU/g. A follow-up study conducted after three months indicated a tendency for an increase in both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including metal-resistant strains. Overall, the total number of microorganisms in all soil samples showed an upward trend. These results show that soil microbial communities may play a role in the detoxification of heavy metals in contaminated soils.

Mikroorganizmy tlenowe z badanych próbek gleby izolowano metodą Kocha, natomiast beztlenowe oznaczano metodą rurkową Hungate’a. W szczególności liczba tlenowych bakterii chemoorganotroficznych wzrosła do (1,0±0,2) × 106 jtk/g. Wyniki badań wskazują, że społeczności mikroorganizmów glebowych mogą odgrywać rolę w detoksykacji metali ciężkich w zanieczyszczonych glebach.
