Coal mining heritage encompasses both the tangible and intangible legacies of coal mining activities. Industrial heritage objects are important in many dimensions: technical, historical, architectural, scientific, and cultural. Postmining sites serve as reminders of industrial advancements and the socio-economic transformations that have shaped regions across Europe. They are the basis of local identity and are important for economic change. On the other hand, monument protection authorities are not always able to maintain all such objects, and the process of making decisions for or against the preservation of a given object is based not only on economic criteria. Maintaining industrial heritage facilities is a multifaceted challenge that requires a tailored approach, considering the specific context of each site. Managing mining resources as cultural heritage is a multifaceted challenge requiring comprehensive strategies. These strategies must address technical, social, economic, and environmental aspects while fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, including local communities, cultural institutions, local authorities, and experts in related fields. The article presents the chosen results of a survey carried out by the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB) within the project “Coal Heritage: Conservation and promotion of the Coal Mining Heritage as the EU’s cultural legacy” financed by the Coal and Steel Research Fund Accompanying Measures. The discussion integrates key insights from experts’ comprehensive and consistent perspective on the challenges in the management of mining heritage.

Dziedzictwo górnictwa węgla kamiennego obejmuje zarówno materialne, jak i niematerialne dziedzictwo działalności górniczej. Obiekty dziedzictwa przemysłowego są ważne w wielu wymiarach: technicznym, historycznym, architektonicznym, naukowym i kulturowym. Tereny pogórnicze przypominają o postępie przemysłowym i przemianach społeczno-gospodarczych, które ukształtowały regiony w całej Europie. Stanowią one podstawę lokalnej tożsamości i są ważne dla przemian gospodarczych. Z drugiej strony organy ochrony zabytków nie zawsze są w stanie utrzymać wszystkie takie obiekty, a proces podejmowania decyzji za ochroną danego obiektu albo przeciw niej opiera się nie tylko na kryteriach ekonomicznych. Utrzymanie obiektów dziedzictwa przemysłowego jest wieloaspektowym wyzwaniem, które wymaga indywidualnego podejścia, uwzględniającego specyficzny kontekst każdego obiektu. Zarządzanie zasobami górniczymi jako dziedzictwem kulturowym jest wieloaspektowym wyzwaniem wymagającym kompleksowych strategii. Strategie te muszą uwzględniać aspekty techniczne, społeczne, gospodarcze i środowiskowe, a jednocześnie wspierać współpracę między różnymi interesariuszami, w tym społecznościami lokalnymi, instytucjami kulturalnymi, władzami lokalnymi i ekspertami w pokrewnych dziedzinach. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych przez Główny Instytut Górnictwa – Państwowy Instytut Badawczy (GIG-PIB) w ramach projektu „Dziedzictwo węglowe: konserwacja i promocja dziedzictwa górnictwa węglowego jako dziedzictwa kulturowego UE”, finansowanego ze środków Funduszu Badawczego Węgla i Stali. Dyskusja integruje kluczowe spostrzeżenia ekspertów, dając kompleksowe i spójne spojrzenie na wyzwania związane z zarządzaniem dziedzictwem górniczym.

Purpose: The article discusses the results of the SWOT analysis, which concerns the results of research conducted by the Central Mining Institute (GIG-PIB) and the Miners' Union of the Republic of Poland (ZZG), and relating to the transformation process1. Methodology: The SWOT analysis was based on the results of qualitative and quantitative research conducted as part of the project by GIG-PIB and ZZG. The qualitative research tools were: desk research, group interviews and in-depth interviews. Findings: the research indicates that one of the key elements supporting the transformation process is investing in education and training. This research also shows that it is to provide financial support and social dialogue, which enables the involvement of various stakeholders in the transformation process. Research limitations/implications: t he scope of data used in the SWOT analysis may not include all identifiable strengths and weaknesses of the Silesian Voivodship, but only those that appeared in the responses of the respondents to the aforementioned study. Practical implications: the SWOT analysis indicates that in the case of transformation, there is a need for a long-term, planned transition to a new model of economic development. However, the level of preparedness of enterprises, especially those related to mining, is still too low, especially from a financial perspective. Social implications: in the social dimension, the main problem in the transformation is the threat resulting from the possibility of losing jobs n and the related possibility of increasing unemployment and social exclusion in the region. Originality: the economic transformation of the Silesian Voivodship is a huge challenge, but also an opportunity for the development and modernization of the region. The SWOT analysis identifies key strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to the decarbonization process. Social research emphasizes the need to invest in education, retraining and social dialogue in order to ensure a fair and effective transformation.

We can gain knowledge from others, but we must learn wisdom ourselves Adam Mickiewicz Objective: in the cognitive space of the article, it focuses on one of the key challenges for the domestic mining industry, which is the need for skillful and innovative promotion of modern attitudes and convincing that moving away from the way of thinking prevailing in the industrial era is purposeful and inevitable, because only and exclusively turning to the future - through care for one's own development - can guarantee success1. Methodology: the theses presented in the article were verified using the following methods: literature review, critical analysis of literature, analysis of documents and comparisons and examples of good practices. Result: the possible success of maintaining balance on the labor market in the area of internal potentials of entrepreneurs - in transformed areas - in the perspective of the megatrend global labor market will most likely be determined by an approach based on important determinants such as full and understandable information for the recipient based on the most complete knowledge of transformation processes and creativity in their implementation. Originality: it seems that breaking mental barriers towards innovations in order to strengthen their acceptance may play a decisive role in creating the development of transformed labor markets. The pursuit of innovation leads directly to economic growth at the level of both the state and the commune, while at the individual level promoting social inclusion and strengthening people's sense of life to the full.

The article analyses the impact of mining traditions on the regional identity of Upper Silesia and addresses the issue ofprotecting the mining heritage in the face of industrial and social transformation. The authors point out that decades of miningindustryin Silesia have shaped a specific work ethos, habits and mores, which are currently at risk of disappearing as a result of the decarbonization process and the changingtheindustry structure. Specialattention is paid to both tangible and intangible aspects of heritage, such as souvenirs, decorative objects, medals, as well as the traditions of the cult of Saint Barbara.The role of miners as depositories of the memory of the profession and its symbolism is emphasized. Examples of good practice in heritage preservation include international projects, such as CoalHeritage, supporting the promotion of coalindustryheritage. The article emphasizes that the preservation of exhibits, documentation of their history and the relationships among themining families are crucial for consolidatingtheregional identity and transmitting the cultural values to future generations. The need for further actions to protect and popularize the unique mining heritage is also indicated.

The main aim of the article is to determine the impact of mine closure on the local environment, with particular emphasis on the social, economic and environmental problems that arise when mining activities are limited or discontinued. Ultimately, the closure of the mine may affect the entire economy of the region, as it will cause changes in the structure of the labor market and in the local and regional economy. In order to better understand the processes related to the preparation of employees and their representatives, as well as employers for the upcoming changes related to the closure of mines, implemented qualitative field research was carried out. Two methods were used in the research. The first was a moderated discussion and the second was an in-depth expert interview. In total, eight moderated discussions and four in-depth expert interviews were conducted. Moderated discussions and in-depth expert interviews were conducted in eight subregions of the Silesian Voivodeship: Bielsko, Bytom, Częstochowa, Gliwice, Katowice, Rybnik, Sosnowiec and Tychy. The research results clearly indicate that coordinated action by the government, local government, enterprises, local communities and other stakeholders focused on strategic planning, cooperation and a sustainable approach to the mine closure process can guarantee lasting success.

Trudi Canavan Purpose: in the cognitive space of the article, an important and significant challenge arises, which is - in the perspective of the megatrends indicated in the article, demographic change and public health - the need to prepare a package of socio-economic activities dedicated primarily to the inhabitants of the areas where the process of closing down mining plants will take place. In this context, the issues of demographic change and health should be given priority in these areas in activities promoting social and economic activity in the transformation process. Methodology: the theses presented in the article were verified using the following methods: literature review, critical analysis of literature, analysis and comparison of documents and an example of good practices. Resultat: in the perspective of the next decades, numerous social and economic challenges and effects related to the transformation of mining plants in the space of local communities (commune, district) can be pointed out. While maintaining the hierarchy of objectives described in the European Green Deal Plan and clearly related to the plan for the transformation of mining plants, lasting cooperation of the three key stakeholders in this process, i.e., local communities (representation of local and territorial self-government), employers and representation of state policies, should be expected in their environment. Originality: the conclusions and recommendations from the article may be important for researchers and practitioners involved in the implementation of activities aimed at limiting the marginalization, differentiation and social and economic exclusion of residents of areas where the process of closing mining plants will take place.

Purpose: the aim of the research results presented in the article is to strengthen a better understanding of the processes related to the transformation of hard coal mining in Poland, in particular the preparation of employees and their representatives, as well as employers from transformed areas for the upcoming changes. In this perspective, anticipating future skills against the internal potential of entrepreneurs becomes more and more important. It is a key element that enables entrepreneurs to adapt to changes, create innovative solutions and remain competitive on the market. Methodology: in the space of challenges and changes outlined in the article, qualitative research was carried out focused on predicting future skills from the perspective of entrepreneurs' internal capital. The research was conducted using the focus group interview (FGI) and in-depth individual interview (IDI) methods. Resultat: research results on predicting future skills in the perspective of the internal potential of entrepreneurs in transformed areas, indicate that these are areas characterized by major changes in the economy, technology and environment, which requires entrepreneurs to be able to quickly adapt to new conditions and the ability to adapt their activities to market requirements. Originality: predicting the future skills and potential of entrepreneurs in transformed areas is difficult due to the dynamic changes taking place in these areas and the complexity of factors influencing their development. Therefore, it is important that the approach to the identified problem areas is flexible and takes into account the changing needs of entrepreneurs.

Decarbonisation of the European economy is one of the most important megatrends that will shape economic and social development in the coming years. This paper discusses the basic concepts of decarbonisation in terms of climate change, the history of this idea development and the legal basis introduced in the European Union, including key European documents and tools influencing the process, like ETS or CO2 emission allowances. Background on decarbonisation has been presented as a European roadmap to achieve a low-carbon economy in Europe. In the article the main assumptions of the EU strategy papers like Clean Energy for All Europeans or the European Green Deal are presented. Casus Silesia indicates the basic problematic issues that coal regions will have to tackle to due to the transition away from coal. For European societies, the new environmental policy of the European Commission means the intensification of activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switching the economy to low- or zero-carbon energy sources and technologies. The decarbonisation of the economy is an ongoing process which has been gaining momentum in recent years. The coal transition is a huge challenge, particularly for Poland.

The aim was to investigate and complete analysis of the labour market participants' competences and the attitudes to the key problems of the contemporary world.
