Prace te stanowią pierwszy etap projektu ValorWaste, w ramach którego kolejne działania będą dotyczyły zastępowania surowców krytycznych odpadami i produktami ubocznymi w celu dalszej redukcji śladu środowiskowego produkcji cementu.

Cement is one of the key materials in the construction sector, but its production accounts for approximately 7–8% of global CO2 emissions, which, in the context of sustainable development and climate neutrality goals, highlights the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA). This paper presents a review of recent literature concerning changes in cement composition and their environmental impacts assessed using LCA methodology. Studies on cement with alternative materials as additives and company EPD reports were analysed, with particular emphasis on carbon footprint, energy consumption, and system boundaries. In addition, a comparative analysis was carried out between conventional clinker production and a variant in which grid electricity was replaced by electricity generated by photovoltaic panels, modelled in SimaPro. This work constitutes the first stage of the ValorWaste project, in which subsequent activities will focus on substituting critical raw materials with wastes and by-products to further reduce the environmental footprint of cement production.

Foundries are increasingly being asked not whether they calculate their carbon footprint, but when they will provide data on: emissions from Scopes 1-3, CO2e emissions per tonne, along with confirmation of the data source and a history of changes. The problem is that this information is usually scattered across invoices, ERP systems, Excel spreadsheets, energy meters and the knowledge of various people within the plant. In this article, we demonstrate how Opti-Carbon brings order to this area: it calculates and reports the carbon footprint for the entire organisation (Scopes 1-3) in accordance with ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol, whilst - in the context of a foundry - enabling the optimisation layer to focus on the processes with the greatest impact: melting and pouring (typically accounting for over 70% of energy consumption). For Scope 3, the system provides a dedicated foundry module for calculating process emissions using the mass balance method, designed to be intuitive in a production environment.

The environmental impact of industrial lubricants has become an increasing concern due to their petroleum- and chemical-based compositions. This study presents a comparative life cycle assessment of conventional lubricants and bio-lubricants used in gearbox applications over a one-year period of operation. The assessment follows the ISO 14040 framework, evaluating various impact categories. Wear and friction data are obtained from a standardised four-ball tribotester to represent the lubricants’ performance and energy loss due to the friction coefficient. The integration of tribological behaviour into the LCA is an innovative approach that enables a more accurate estimation of the lubricants’ carbon footprint, particularly during the use phase. The study supports the adoption of bioproducts as a more environmentally friendly strategy in industry and demonstrates the importance of taking into account both the tribological and environmental performance for a life cycle assessment of lubricants. The results show that vegetable lubricants enriched with AW/EP additives provide an high anti-wear performance, positioning them as viable replacements for conventional lubricants.

Wpływ środowiskowy przemysłowych środków smarnych staje się coraz większym problemem z powodu zawartości w nich pochodnych ropy naftowej i nieekologicznych dodatków.

Istnieje możliwość, że importowany GZ generuje ślad węglowy (carbon footprint CFP) większy niż krajowy węgiel kamienny (WK), a nawet brunatny (WB). W artykule zawarto próbę oceny, w jakich warunkach taka sytuacja może zachodzić i wskazano możliwe kierunki optymalnego rozwoju energetyki opartej na wykorzystaniu energii chemicznej paliw, która jest niezbędna jako składnik chroniący parametry elektryczne (częstotliwość, napięcie) KSE i zabezpieczający przed blackoutem w sytuacji dużego udziału niesterowalnych odnawialnych źródeł energii OZE (farmy wiatrowe FW i fotowoltaika PV).

The National Power System (NPS) is increasingly reliant on gas-fired units fueled by natural gas (NG), the majority of which is imported. Given the significant impact of CH4 emissions on the global climate, it remains questionable whether current policies shaping the NPS structure are justifiable from both economic and ecological perspectives. There is a possibility that imported NG generates a carbon footprint (CFP) exceeding that of domestic hard coal (HC) or even lignite (L). This paper evaluates the conditions under which such a scenario occurs and outlines optimal development paths for fuel-based power generation. This sector remains an essential component for maintaining grid frequency and voltage stability, serving as a safeguard against blackouts in a system with a high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind farms and photovoltaics.

Zastosowanie fotowoltaiki obniża wskaźnik EP z 67,6 do 33,4 kWh/(m²·rok) i redukuje emisję CO₂ o ok. 50%. Wnioski potwierdzają, że integracja pompy ciepła z instalacją PV znacząco poprawia efektywność energetyczną, zmniejsza ślad węglowy i zwiększa niezależność energetyczną budynku.

The aim of the study is to determine the annual electricity demand of a boiler room equipped with a ground source heat pump in a single family house, and to assess the extent to which a photovoltaic installation can cover this demand. The methodology is based on calculations of useful, final, and auxiliary energy in accordance with applicable standards, as well as an analysis of the technical parameters of the building and the heat pump. The results show that the building has a low useful energy demand (68.6 kWh/m²·year) and high efficiency of its technical systems. The annual final energy consumption of the boiler room is approximately 6900 kWh. To cover 50% of this demand, four PV modules with a capacity of 450 Wp each are sufficient. The use of photovoltaics reduces the EP indicator from 67.6 to 33.4 kWh/(m²·year) and lowers CO₂ emissions by around 50%. The conclusions confirm that integrating a heat pump with a PV installation significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces emissions, and increases the building’s energy independence.

Concrete pavements produced with low emission cements have now durable and permanently entered the portfolio of infrastructure projects in Poland. In this context, durability is not only a characteristic trend associated with the use of new, more sustainable material solutions based on cements other than those from the CEM I group, but above all a guarantee of a long lasting structure that operates without failure throughout its designed service life. The technological leap in the construction of concrete pavements in Poland is a fact, and the high quality and strict technological discipline of execution place this technology at the forefront when performing a comprehensive LCA analysis. It is enough to recall that the durability of concrete pavements, measured as the period of failure free operation between repairs, is on average 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than that of asphalt pavements [1,2]. Current technologies, modern equipment, and the extensive experience of contractors position Poland among the global leaders in terms of standards for constructing concrete pavements [3]. The implementation of two sections of the S6 expressway – key from the perspective of transport infrastructure in the Pomerania region – is another example confirming the above thesis. The use of low emission cement in the construction of the concrete pavement on this project provides a potential reduction of more than 30% in the embodied carbon footprint compared to a solution based on CEM I 42.5 R NA cement.

This study aimed to determine the environmental impact of extensive green roofs (EGRs) using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based on an analysis of a 4 m² experimental EGR unit. A literature-based LCA was conducted, covering the first three life cycle stages, followed by a detailed LCA of these stages. The analysis was supplemented with carbon footprint calculations for the individual processes involved in constructing the experimental green roof unit (4 m²). The results showed that the production of green roof components, particularly synthetic materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene, significantly contributes to environmental degradation. The carbon footprint of the 740.15 kg experimental green roof was 0.29 kg CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of green roof system (GRS). While this value is relatively low compared to, for example, selected food products, the environmental impact increases significantly when scaled to actual roof sizes, such as 100 m². Compared to similar studies, such as 150.99 kg CO₂ equivalent per m² for tropical green roofs, this study highlights the variability of environmental impacts depending on climate, materials, and design decisions. Although green roofs are intended to mimic natural ecosystems, current designs often rely on materials with high environmental impacts. Further research into sustainable alternatives and the inclusion of more CO₂-sequestering plant species are necessary to reduce their ecological footprint.

Przeprowadzono analizę cyklu życia opartą na wytycznych i wartościach zawartych w literaturze, obejmującą pierwsze trzy etapy cyklu życia, a następnie szczegółową analizę cyklu życia tych etapów.

Purpose: Faced with climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most difficult and urgent global challenges. Seaports are large GHG emitters, and they have been assessing their carbon footprint and adopting decarbonization strategies. However, calculating the carbon footprint of ports is a serious challenge due to the specificity of the service-based activities they conduct. This article addresses the topic of GHG emissions in seaports, using the example of the port in Gdynia (one of the four largest Polish ports), where the port authority started estimating the carbon footprint as part of preparations for ESG reporting. The aim of this article is to identify challenges related to assessing and reporting carbon footprint in a seaport. Design/methodology/approach: The study used secondary and primary data sources. A review of the literature on the subject was conducted, as well as the analysis of the summaries of reports published by the Gdynia port management for the years 2003 and 2020-2023 (in which the identified sources of GHG emissions were described and the amount of emissions was estimated), and data from non-standardized interviews conducted in January 2025 with employees of Polish ports were used, which allowed us to establish that the Port of Gdynia Authority SA was the first of all Polish ports to attempt to estimate the amount of GHG emissions in the port and prepare a report on the size of its carbon footprint. Findings: It was established that the specificity of port activities results in various problems and challenges, which concern, among others, collecting the required and reliable data, using analytical tools dedicated to ports, methods of estimating the carbon footprint, taking into account the incomplete scope of emissions and making numerous "exclusions" (which may lead to doubts as to the reliability of the report), proposals for directions of actions to reduce GHG emissions in the port. Research limitations/implications: The credibility of reports and the effectiveness of seaport carbon footprint reduction strategies depend on the reliability and discipline of the GHG emission estimation process. Practical implications: The study of GHG emissions and the preparation of a reduction strategy in seaports is one of the primary challenges port authorities and port service companies face in light of the need for decarbonization. This article indicates problems and challenges that the authors of carbon footprint reports and reduction strategies in seaports must confront. Originality/value: In the Polish literature on this subject, there is a lack of studies on the specifics of GHG emissions in seaports, reporting of port carbon footprint and related problems. This article identifies challenges and provides some recommendations.

Purpose: This article aims to demonstrate threats to the correct reporting of carbon footprint according to the requirements of the European Union, using the example of Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The research methods used include analysis of secondary data from Eurostat, analysis of legal acts, and literature studies on the measurement and reporting of carbon footprint. Findings: The introduction of uniform reporting standards (European Sustainability Reporting Standards - ESRS) and key indicators for assessing the performance of units means the need to collect numerous data. The obligation to prepare sustainable development reports will significantly impact the scope of work and the accounting tools used in both financial and management accounting. Current European Union requirements for determining and reporting carbon footprint information will challenge accountants. The very complexity of the construction of the carbon footprint and the methods of its calculation, which require the use of dedicated software, may open up room for errors and abuse. Research limitations/implications: The EU’s environmental policy and ESRS reporting requirements will evolve. The actual enforcement of the accuracy of carbon footprint reporting remains to be verified; therefore, such a study should be repeated. Practical implications: Poland is a country that has a lot to do in the field of environmental protection among the European Union countries. This will lead to remarkably high pressure and costs imposed on companies, increasing the potential threat of violations of ethical standards when preparing non-financial reporting regarding the impact of companies’ activities and products on the natural environment. The problem for accountants is also the fear of the consequences of disclosing information, which indicates the negative impact of the activities of these entities on the natural environment. This is undoubtedly an area susceptible to unethical activities. Originality/value: The paper's originality lies in comparing carbon footprint reporting requirements with the ecological situation of Poland, among other European Union countries, as a source of potential irregularities in the reports of Polish companies.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to present the concept and practical implementation of a consumer maturity model for reducing the carbon footprint. The developed model allows the evaluation of consumers’ awareness and behaviors regarding carbon footprint reduction. Design/methodology/approach: The research was based on a comprehensive literature review covering the concepts of carbon footprint and maturity models. Based on the findings, an original consumer maturity model was constructed, followed by its testing using the Proof of Concept (PoC) approach. A Python application was developed to assess consumer maturity based on user responses. Findings: The study resulted in the creation of a consumer maturity model consisting of key dimensions and variables influencing carbon footprint reduction. The model was successfully implemented in an application that allows classification of consumers into different maturity levels based on their behaviors and decisions. Research limitations/implications: The model was tested in a controlled environment, which may limit its generalizability. Future research should involve testing with a broader and more diverse group of consumers. Practical implications: The model and application can be used by organizations and institutions to diagnose consumer readiness to adopt more sustainable behaviors and to design educational or marketing interventions tailored to different maturity levels. Social implications: Promoting awareness and behavioral change among consumers can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the individual level, supporting broader climate protection efforts. Originality/value: The paper introduces a novel model specifically targeting consumer behavior in the context of carbon footprint reduction, addressing a gap in existing maturity models which primarily focus on organizational or industrial practices. Keywords: carbon footprint, consumer maturity, maturity model, greenhouse gases.

Solutions for planning and improving transport processes often require the modification of existing transport equipment or the development of new equipment to increase its operational range or improve its efficiency. Appropriately introduced modifications contribute to maintaining the smooth flow of the process, enabling transport in a wider operational range. Proprietary solutions consisting of increasing the operational range of the extension arm by incorporating high-strength steels into their structure made it possible to extend the arms of these devices while maintaining the total weight of the device and appropriate high-performance parameters. The solution allows operators to reach places previously inaccessible to these devices, thus eliminating the need to use other devices in the logistics process. An important element of the solution is to ensure the passive safety of the structure; hence, the solution created for the needs of transport logistics required the development of an appropriate process for joining different types of steel. This type of joint is important in the automotive industry, especially in the construction of mobile platforms, because, on the one hand, a light, spacious, and durable structure is required, and on the other hand, this structure should be characterized by good anti-corrosion properties. The uniqueness of the presented solution is evidenced by the fact that the developed processes supporting the reduction of the “carbon footprint” were deliberately used to combine elements of two different types of steel: super duplex (SD) steel and advanced high-strength steel (AHSS), which is a technological novelty in combining the discussed steel grades. The CO2-free gas mixture was selected for technological and environmental reasons in accordance with EU directives, which strongly recommend reducing CO2 emissions in the automotive industry. The purpose of this article is to present a solution for the execution of welded joints, high- strength steels with duplex steels, ensuring the achievement of the desired structures of transport equipment, taking into account the principles of sustainable development and striving in this area to reduce CO2 in technological processes. The main methods for checking the quality of the welded dissimilar joint were based on the tensile, bending, and impact toughness tests. The results are very promising, and the obtained correct joints are characterized by high mechanical properties suitable for constructing mobile platforms in the automotive industry. The presented solution supports activities for sustainable development and logistics in transport. The proposed solution to modify transport means will improve the functionality of this device. The solution was developed to address the need to implement the transport processes of the examined organization.
