The development of image-based approaches for 3D dense reconstruction has found wide application in the architectural documentation of cultural objects and sites. For this reason, it is crucial to understand the potential and limitations of Multi-View Stereo (MVS) algorithms used in 3D shape reconstruction. This article aims to evaluate the quality and accuracy of dense point generation for cultural heritage objects using open-source (MicMac, OpenMVS, RealityScan), commercial algorithms (Agisoft Metashape and Pix4D), and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in parallel and skew configurations at two historic wooden structures. To achieve this, a workflow for data evaluation was proposed, incorporating eigenvalues and quality factors, such as planarity, roughness, normal vector variance, and cloud-to-TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning) cloud deviation analysis. The results demonstrate that the image-acquisition geometry strongly influences reconstruction accuracy. Parallel configurations consistently produced higher completeness, narrower deviation distributions, and improved geometric fidelity compared to skew configurations. Among commercial solutions, Agisoft Metashape and Pix4D achieved the best overall performance. Open-source algorithms yielded variable results: OpenMVS-SGM achieved competitive accuracy under optimal conditions, while the OpenMVS-Patch-Based Approach offered a balance between density and roughness.

The study addresses the problem of detecting displacements of building walls using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data and machine learning methods. Traditional displacement measurement techniques are often time-consuming. They are also limited in capturing the full geometry of monitored objects. In response, this research proposes a methodology based on the analysis of geometric and radiometric features extracted from point clouds. Controlled experiments were conducted with a geodetic rosette equipped with distance-measuring prisms, which were displaced in the XY plane by 4 mm, 9 mm, and 13 mm. Data were recorded with a Leica RTC360 scanner from three stations, yielding nine point clouds. Selected features describing differences between corresponding points in the reference and displaced series were used as input for neural network models. Both binary classification (displacement/non-displacement) and multi-class classification (0, 4, 9, 13 mm displacement) were performed. The results demonstrated high classification accuracy: 99.1% for binary models and 96.0% for multi-class models. Feature ranking revealed that geometric attributes, such as displacement vector length, curvature, and normal vectors, were the most relevant for model training, while color features had minor importance. The study confirmed that scanner position and incidence angle of the laser beam strongly affect classification quality. The developed procedure proved effective in detecting displacements that occur in directions parallel to the plane of building walls. The conclusions drawn from the research constitute a valuable contribution to the theory of monitoring building structures using TLS.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has become one of the key technologies for surveying and documenting engineering objects, including large-scale and hard-to-access hydraulic structures. Water dams are a prominent example with considerable spatial dimensions, complex geometry, and critical importance for technical and environmental safety. This calls for modern, precise, and comprehensive documentation methods. TLS enables the acquisition of dense three-dimensional spatial data in the form of point clouds, providing a robust basis for geometric inventorying, visualization, and assessment of structural condition. This study uses TLS datasets acquired for the Rożnów and Klimkówka dams to produce 2D technical documentation, 3D models, and geometric analyses of the dams and their associated components. The point clouds support surface-based evaluation of object geometry, verification of structural continuity and integrity, detection of shape changes, and analysis of spatial relationships between the dams and their surroundings. An additional advantage of point clouds is the reusability of the acquired data: cross-sections, plans, and visualizations can be generated repeatedly at later stages without the need for renewed field surveys. The results demonstrate the high utility of TLS as a support for geometric inventorying, technical condition assessment, and long-term monitoring of water dams, particularly in the case of large, geometrically complex hydraulic structures.

Wymaga to nowoczesnych, precyzyjnych i kompleksowych metod dokumentacji. TLS umożliwia pozyskiwanie gęstych, trójwymiarowych danych przestrzennych w postaci chmur punktów, stanowiąc solidną podstawę do inwentaryzacji geometrycznej, wizualizacji i oceny stanu konstrukcji. Wyniki dowodzą wysokiej przydatności TLS jako narzędzia wspomagającego inwentaryzację geometryczną, ocenę stanu technicznego i długoterminowy monitoring zapór wodnych, szczególnie w przypadku dużych, geometrycznie skomplikowanych budowli hydrotechnicznych.

Contemporary visibility analyses, particularly relevant in environmental and landscape studies, require the processing of very large datasets derived from point clouds. While such data provide high accuracy, they also involve substantial computational demands and long processing times, which limit their practical applicability. This article presents a detailed analysis of the impact of point cloud simplification on the accuracy of viewshed. The viewshed diagrams were generated using the ray tracing method, and the analysis included an evaluation of discrepancies between results obtained from simplified datasets and reference outcomes based on the complete, unprocessed dataset. In addition, the computation time required to generate viewshed under different levels of simplification was investigated. The findings made it possible to identify the maximum acceptable levels of simplification as well as the potential computational gains in terms of the number of processed points. The results demonstrate that properly selected simplification levels can significantly enhance the efficiency of ray tracing-based visibility analyses while preserving their practical reliability.

In this paper, a method for acquiring spatial data using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is presented. In this work, the UAV is a hexacopter equipped with a high-end camera capable of recording 4K video and capturing high-resolution photographs. The first step in data acquisition involves conducting a flight over the analyzed object, which can be either a land area or a construction site. During the flight, a series of photographs or video footage is recorded. In a later stage, these recordings are processed with the use of appropriate software. This processing consists of several steps. First, the recorded photos are arranged according to their location of capture and then properly stitched together. Based on this, a dense point cloud is created, from which it is possible to build a mesh with an adjustable number of vertices. In addition, the polygons’ textures are extracted from the photographs taken. According to this approach, it is possible to obtain high-quality data for both terrain and architectural objects. The resulting point cloud can serve as a starting point for performing a variety of analyses or inventories, provide the basis for high-precision models or supplement existing lower-density point clouds.

Pavements require regular maintenance due to the wear and tear caused by traffic loads and environmental conditions, which lead to various surface defects. This study explores the use of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology and ArcGIS software to identify pavement defects in selected regions of Malaysia. The Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Expressway (JSAHMSE) and the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE) were chosen as test sites for evaluating this approach. Initially, point cloud data were collected from both expressways using LiDAR, and related images were processed through ArcGIS software to identify defects on the road surfaces. The analysis revealed defects such as shoving, bleeding, longitudinal cracking, potholes, and patching on the GCE, while raveling, longitudinal cracking, bleeding, and edge cracking were observed on the JSAHMSE. Simultaneously, manual visual inspections were conducted, and defects were documented. A comparison of the results from both methods showed that LiDAR and ArcGIS effectively identified the types and sizes (length and surface area) of the defects. However, ArcGIS struggled to accurately measure the depth of certain defects, making it difficult to assess their severity in detail.

Contemporary building documentation increasingly relies on laser scanning technologies that provide rapid and precise spatial data acquisition. Portable LiDAR systems such as the Leica BLK360, as well as mobile devices like the iPad, offer modern tools for efficient documentation of interior spaces, including office rooms. With dedicated applications (e.g., Leica Cyclone Field 360, Leica Cyclone 3DR, MagicPlan, BIMx, AutoCAD Mobile), users can record measurements, create sketches, and generate 3D models and photographic documentation within a single digital environment. The purpose of this study is to assess the dimensional accuracy in the documentation of an office space using portable LiDAR systems. The experiments showed that, for most analysed dimensions, the results agreed within several centimetres, which is sufficient for architectural inventory work. However, the issue of rounded corners was identified, which may significantly influence measurement results depending on the distance-measurement method applied. Reliable accuracy analysis required proper mutual alignment (common georeferencing) of the scans acquired with the selected instruments. To achieve this, point cloud classification was performed to identify surfaces suitable for cloud-to-cloud alignment. A predefined AI-based classification model dedicated to indoor environments was used. The findings confirm that portable LiDAR systems significantly reduce the time required to complete inventory tasks and enable more comprehensive visualisation of interior spaces. This technology serves as an effective tool supporting the design, modernisation, and management of office environments in a digital workflow, although its accuracy-related limitations must be considered.

The article presents the results of the authors’ own research as well as examples from the literature regarding the use of data obtained with unmanned aerial vehicles in road construction. The study describes methods that support the work of road designers through the use of point cloud data and digital terrain models. It also highlights the possibilities of implementing cartometric materials in the form of orthophotos for pavement condition assessment. Even low-budget unmanned aerial vehicles allow for the rapid acquisition of a large number of high-resolution images of the analysed area. These data can be used for detailed road infrastructure design in terms of spatial location, investment visualization, and safety condition assessments (e.g., visibility analysis). In pavement diagnostics, including damage detection, unmanned aerial vehicles enable the execution of repeatable (cyclical) missions while maintaining consistent measurement criteria. This allows for continuous road monitoring and tracking of changes over time. The images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles provide flexibility in processing and application, reducing financial costs and minimizing the number of personnel required for task execution.

A 3D point cloud is a collection of millions of spatial points that faithfully capture object shape and structure. Handheld mobile laser scanners are increasingly adopted because they enable rapid and complete acquisition. This paper evaluates the geometric and metrological quality of a point cloud collected with a handheld MandEye PRO scanner based on the Livox Mid-360 from an architectural object, using terrestrial laser scanning with a Leica ScanStation P40 and a network of total station control points as references. Point-like, linear, and planar features were assessed by registration to the control frame, segment-length comparisons, plane fitting, and cloud-to-cloud distance analysis. After registration, root mean square errors on control points fall within 0.02–0.19 m (mean 0.08 m). Segment lengths are consistent to within a single centimetre across handheld MLS, TLS, total station measurements, and direct field readings, while the differences in areas of fitted planes are 0.7–1.9%. Local deviations concentrate along edges and in shadowed zones, indicating sensitivity to trajectory coverage and sampling density. In well-covered regions, the overall agreement between MLS and TLS remains stable, whereas gaps in visibility or sparse sampling lead to localised discrepancies. The results show that, in this configuration, handheld mobile scanning provides accuracy consistent with the requirements of geodetic documentation while offering high acquisition efficiency. These findings support the use of handheld MLS for architectural surveying and geodetic fieldwork, provided that route planning and sampling are designed to ensure robust coverage of critical facades, edges, and occluded areas.

Długości segmentów są spójne z dokładnością do jednego centymetra w pomiarach ręcznych MLS, TLS, tachimetru i bezpośrednich odczytach terenowych, a różnice w powierzchniach dopasowanych płaszczyzn wynoszą 0,7–1,9%.

Digital twin technology is revolutionizing the architectural and construction industries by offering a live, data-driven digital replica of physical buildings. Unlike static 3D models, digital twins evolve with time, integrating real-world data captured from sensors, IoT devices, and user inputs. This enables stakeholders to monitor, analyse, and optimize building performance in real-time. The power of digital twins lies in their ability to bridge the physical and digital worlds, allowing architects, engineers, and facility managers to simulate scenarios, track changes, and predict future behaviour of structures based on historical and real-time data. In architectural design and facility management, digital twins extend the capabilities of Building Information Modelling (BIM) by incorporating live feedback loops, allowing professionals to go beyond documentation and into predictive modelling. When paired with platforms like Revit and AutoCAD, and enhanced with technologies such as point cloud scanning, digital twins become powerful tools for renovation, retrofitting, and complex site analysis. This technology is particularly valuable in smart building development and urban planning, offering real-time visibility into energy use, occupancy, system performance, and lifecycle optimization. As this innovation matures, it is setting a new paradigm for how buildings are designed, constructed, operated, and maintained across their full lifecycle.

Assessing the condition of historical sites at risk requires an interdisciplinary approach based on combining multiple measurement technologies. Due to the dynamic development of technology, non-invasive remote sensing methods are gaining significant importance. Among these techniques is photogrammetry based on images taken from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and those taken with a smartphone. In the study, the authors specified the possibilities and limitations of using remote photogrammetric methods to build accurate digital models of the walls of historic buildings with cracks in them. Point clouds, TIN grids, and façade orthophotos were examined. Statistical analysis was used to determine the repeatability of the data. Two parameters were identified that affect the accuracy of the data: the first – the direction of the segment between two points in the façade plane, and the second – the distance of the segment between two points in the plane of the façade. The study showed that the average accuracy of crack width measurements on the data acquired with the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise RTK is 1 mm. Testing of crack width measurements using a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE smartphone showed an average absolute error of 0.24 mm. Based on the results, it was concluded that the images acquired using mobile devices can be used to determine changes in crack widths on walls.

The "Kłodawa" salt mine, due to geological conditions and continuous salt extraction, is subject to a range of measurements documenting the speed of changes in the geometry of the chambers. Cyclic surveys are conducted under challenging conditions several hundred metres underground. Consequently, measurement methods used for determining the parameters of the ongoing clamping should be of high precision but also be resistant to dense dust (in fields of active mining) and strong gusts (near ventilation shafts). The research presented here concerns the analysis of the possibilities of solutions offered by modern technologies in mine conditions. Test measurements were conducted at observation stations using linear bases stabilized with metal pins. The base points were located in the aisles, ceiling, and bottom of the chamber in Field 1 of "Kłodawa" salt mine at the depth of 600m. Point clouds mapping the object were acquired using a Leica RTC360 3D laser scanner and two mobile devices: Motorola G100 smartphone and iPad Pro with LiDAR technology using the Pix4Dcatch application. The accuracy of the point cloud from the Leica RTC360 3D laser scanner was determined by comparing it with classic measurements taken with a Leica Disto laser rangefinder. The repeatability and accuracy of the point cloud from a smartphone were examined using statistical analysis based on Pearson's correlation coefficient and cross-correlation. An attempt was also made to approximate the correlation between the obtained errors and two parameters: the number of images and the size of the object.
