Soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects were investigated on structural responses of wind turbine. Force versus deformation (i.e., p-y curves) was simulated by multilinear elastic springs. The whole system, including the structure, control vibration system and soil nonlinear effects are simulated within a single three-dimensional finite element model. Modeling accuracy was verified using available results related to a 65 kW wind turbine discussed in the literature. Pushover analysis results indicated a fixed-base assumption ends up with overestimation of stiffness compared to the case where SSI effects are considered. Moreover, it is observed that the performance of tuned mass damper (TMD) is highly dependent on its tuned frequency domain, and its efficiency decreases significantly after SSI effects are considered. Lateral deformations of a wind turbine are much higher compared to the fixed-base condition. Therefore, SSI effects play a crucial part in designing wind turbines and should not be neglected in practice.

Research concerns an innovative semi-active pendulum absorber utilising a varying mass as a way of controlling mechanical system dynamics. An objective of the study is to propose the attenuator concept and its mathematical model – an attachable device mounted to a vibrating system in order to eliminate its pendulum motion. The main advantage of the novel pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD) is combining features of widely known vibrational energy absorber (TMD), improving and expanding its capability through allowing for adaptable changes to the system characteristics and extending its basic operational range through varying its mass realised by transferring the fluid between the main system and the absorber. The article provides research comparing the results of computer simulations with empirical experiments. The objective was to investigate the effectiveness of mass transfer in process of vibrations mitigating. Various factors were analysed, including the influence of changes in a natural frequency of the structure, the activation time of a tuned mass damper (TMD), and the fluid flow rate within the system. The findings demonstrate that mass transfer is a promising approach to reduce vibrations in both, mechanical systems and civil engineering structures. Presented approach enhances the performance of conventional TMDs by incorporating variable parameters, leading to more effective vibration damping compared to traditional fixed-parameter designs.

The article focuses on the proposal of a model of a skyscraper equipped with a semi-active pendular vibration eliminator utilizing the phenomenon of fluid transfer, which could be used in monitoring the condition of slender structures. The proposed model consists of two main elements: an upper member, representing the dynamic mass of a skyscraper in the form of a trolley, and a lower member - a pendulum attached to the trolley. To consider the fluid transfer, a variable mass factor represented by an inverse tangent function was included in the equation of motion. Simulation studies in a dimensionless time domain were performed to investigate the influence of mass distribution on changes in the system’s response. Three dynamic states of the system were considered, during which the system’s total mass remained constant. Diagnostic parameters enabling the detection of changes in the mass of the eliminator and stiffness of a damped structure have been proposed.

The paper concerns the optimization of a tuned mass damper with inerter (TMDI) based on two strategies, i.e., the minimum amplitude in the resonance peak and minimum area under the frequency response curve. The optimization is based on real, accessible parameters. Both optimization procedures are presented in two steps. In the first one, two parameters of the TMDI are tuned (inertance and damping coefficient), while in the second one, three parameters (mass, inertance, and damping coefficient). We show that both strategies give the optimum sets of parameters and allow the reduction of the amplitude of the damped system.

This paper considers structural control by reinforcement learning. The aim is to mitigate vibrations of a shear building subjected to an earthquake-like excitation and fitted with a semi-active tuned mass damper (TMD). The control force is coupled with the structural response, making the problem intrinsically nonlinear and challenging to solve using classical methods. Structural control by reinforcement learning has not been extensively explored yet. Here, Deep-Q-Learning is used, which appriximates the Q-function with a neural network and optimizes initially random control sequences through interaction with the controlled system. For safety reasons, training must be performed using an inevitably inexact numerical model instead of the real structure. It is thus crucial to assess the robustness of the control with respect to measurement noise and model errors. It is verified to significantly outperform an optimally tuned conventional TMD, and the key outcome is the high robustness to measurement noise and model error.

In this study, firstly, the behavior of a high steel frame equipped with tuned mass damper (TMD) due to several seismic records is investigated considering the structural and seismic uncertainties. Then, machine learning methods including artificial neural networks (ANN), decision tree (DT), Naïve Bayes (NB) and support vector machines (SVM) are used to predict the behavior of the structure. Results showed that among the machine learning models, SVM with Gaussian kernel has better performance since it is capable of predicting the drift of stories and the failure probability with R2 value equal to 0.99. Furthermore, results of feature selection algorithms revealed that when using TMD in high steel structures, seismic uncertainties have greater influences on drift of stories in comparison with structural uncertainties. Findings of this study can be used in design and probabilistic analysis of high steel frames equipped with TMDs.

Recently, the topic of energy dissipation efficiency of vehicle suspension dampers has become a research and engineering problem due to structural requirements of vehicle manufacturers and the introduction of electric/hybrid cars. By principle, any disturbances in the damping force generation process translate into pressure fluctuations to be then transferred to the body of the vehicle. The effect known as rattling within the damper engineering community is perceived as detrimental to ride comfort. To improve the performance of a vehicle damper several methods can be devised and used. One approach is to optimize the settings of the valves in the damper. The approach, however, often influences the force output of the damper. Another technique involves the application of add-on systems. One such system is the tuned mass damper concept originally developed by Frahm for structural engineering applications. In the paper the author proposes a damper concept equipped with an external/internal tuned mass damper component for improving the dynamic characteristics of vehicle dampers. The author presents modeling details followed by simulations of the damper with the tuned mass damper concept subjected to oscillatory inputs, and a critical analysis of the presented results.

The paper deals with the application of the continuous dynamic absorbers in vibration reduction problems in beams. The Euler-Bernoulli beam of variable cross-section is subjected to the concentrated and distributed harmonic excitation forces. The beam is equipped with a system of the continuous vibration absorbers. The problem of the forced vibration is solved employing the Galerkin’s method and Lagrange’s equations of the second kind. Performing time-Laplace transformation the amplitudes of displacement may be written in the frequency domain, similarly the time-averaged kinetic energy of any part of the beam. The results of some local and global vibration control optimization problems concerning the placement and parameters of the continuous vibration absorbers are presented.

Rozważono drgania układu maszt-gondola elektrowni wiatrowej. Maszt zamodelowano jako pryzmatyczną belkę sztywno połączoną z masą skupioną reprezentującą gondolę. Do masy skupionej został dołączony tłumik dynamiczny pracujący w kierunku poziomym. Założono małe, liniowe drgania belki opisanej modelem Eulera-Bernoullego. Układ poddano wymuszeniu siłą poziomą. Równanie ruchu rozwiązano metodą rozdzielenia zmiennych Fouriera. Dokonując czasowej transformacji Laplace'a, otrzymano zależności opisujące amplitudę w dziedzinie częstotliwości dla ugięcia dowolnego przekroju belki.

The paper deals with vibration of wind turbine tower-nacelle assembly. The tower is modelled as a prismatic beam with a lumped mass representing the nacelle. In order to attenuate vibration, a horizontal tuned mass damper is attached to the nacelle. Assuming small and linear vibration, an analytical Euler-Bernoulli model is introduced. The system is subjected to the horizontal excitation force. The solution to the problem is expanded in a Fourier series. Performing time-Laplace transform, formulas describing displacement amplitudes of arbitrary point of the beam may be written in the frequency domain.

In this paper the Lyapunov equation is used to analyse random vibration of building structure. The structures with mass dampers are considered. The excitation forces which are functions of fluctuations of wind velocity are treated as random forces. Lyapunov equation is used to determine root mean square of displacements. Results of example calculation are presented and briefly discussed.

The application of tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) for suppresing excessive lateral pedestrian-induced vibrations of footbridges is investigated experimentally and numerically. In order to study the effectiveness of TLCD, a novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) bridge model is constructed in the laboratory of the TU-Institute. A single TLCD is attached to the bridge model to counteract the bridge's fundamental vibration mode. Modal tuning of the TLCD is performed using an analogy to tuned mass damper (TMD). A new excitation device has been developed for simulating the time-periodic contact forces due to walking pedestrians. All vibration tests performed indicate a large reduction of the maximum lateral vibration response amplitude. In order to verify the experimental results, numerical simulations of the laboratory model are performed, which show a good agreement. The application of TLCD at least doubles the effective modal damping coefficient when compared to the original bridge model.

Przedmiotem pracy są doświadczalne i numeryczne badania dostrajanych płynowych amortyzatorów kolumnowych (TLCD) zastosowanych do tłumienia bocznych drgań mostu dla pieszych. By zbadać skuteczność amortyzatorów TLCD, w laboratorium Instytutu Politechniki Wiedeńskiej zbudowano nowy model mostu o trzech stopniach swobody.
