Porous materials are extremely efficient in absorbing mechanical energy in different applications. In the present study, porous materials based on the Ti-6(wt.%)Al-4V alloy were manufactured with the use of two different powder metallurgy methods: i) blended elemental powder approach using titanium hydride (TiH2) as well as V-Al master alloy powders and ii) using hydrogenated Ti-6-4 pre-alloyed powder. The powder compacts were sintered with additions of ammonium bicarbonate as a pore-holding removable agent. The emission of hydrogen from hydrogenated powders on vacuum sintering and the resulting shrinkage of powder particles permitted the control of the sintering process and the creation of anticipated porous structures. Mechanical characteristics were evaluated under quasi-static and dynamic compressive loading conditions. Dynamic compression tests were performed using the direct impact Hopkinson pressure bar technique. All investigations aimed at characterizing the mechanical energy-absorbing ability of the obtained porous structures. The anticipated strength, plasticity, and energyabsorbing characteristics of porous Ti-6-4 material were evaluated, and the possibilities of their application were also discussed. Based on the obtained results, it was found that porous Ti-6-4 material produced with a blended elemental powder approach showed more promising energy absorption properties in comparison with pre-alloyed powder.

Background: Moderate to severe facial esthetic problems challenge the surgeons to discover alternate ways, to rehabilitate the patients using customized porous designs. Porous metal implants are available for over 30 years, but the pore architecture, is constantly changing to improve the stability and longevity of the implant. Objective: To evaluate a customized porous implant produced from electron beam melting and to restore the zygomatic functionality. Methods: Two customized zygomatic reconstruction implants-bulk and porous, are designed based on the bone contours and manufactured using state of art-electron beam melting technology. The two designed implants are evaluated based on strength, weight and porosity for the better osseointegration and rehabilitation of the patient. Results: Porous structures due to their light weight, low volume and high surface area provided better specific strength and young's modulus closer to the bone. Microscopic and CT scanning confirmed that the EBM produced porous structures are highly regular and interconnected without any major internal defects. Conclusions: The customized porous implants satisfies the need of lighter implants with an adequate mechanical strength, restoring better functionality and esthetic outcomes for the patients.

The highly porous titanium is promising material for application in biomedicine, particularly in manufacturing of artificial joints, hip and spinal implants. The excellent biocompatibility of titanium is well known in the surgery practice. The open and interconnected porosity enables ingrowth of bone tissues into implant surface, formation of blood vessels and natural fixation of implant in the human skeleton. The elastic modulus of porous titanium can by easily fitted to the elastic modulus of bones by control of porosity. As a result the shielding effect of implant and degradation of bone can by reduced or eliminated. The medical implants possess as a rule a complex geometry. Therefore net-shape forming is one of the main problems in manufacturing of highly porous implants. Another problem is the keeping of impurities content below the level limited by ASTM standard for medical implants. In the present paper the practice of authors in net-shape forming of highly porous titanium implants produced by powder metallurgy route and space holder technique is reviewed. The use of the die and cold isostatic pressing as well as the metal injection molding for shaping of implants have been compared. The problems in machining of porous titanium compacts prior to sintering and after sintering are discussed. The advantages, problems and prospects of metal injection molding in production of porous titanium implants are highlighted. The net-shape forming of highly porous titanium implants is exemplified.
Celem niniejszej pracy było otrzymanie porowatych próbek tytanowych metodą metalurgii proszków. Podczas spiekania zastosowano dwie temperatury spiekania (1000 i 1100°C) i następujące atmosfery ochronne: argon, próżnia. Otrzymane materiały poddano badaniom mikrostrukturalnym. Celem określenia gęstości, porowatości oraz nasiąkliwości otrzymanych materiałów dokonano ważenia hydrostatycznego w wodzie zdejonizowanej zgodnie z normą PN EN ISO 2738: 2001. Określono również topografię powierzchni wytworzonych materiałów.

The aim of this work was to obtain porous titanium specimens using a powder metallurgy process. During sintering, two sintering temperatures (1000 and 1100°C) and two shielding gases (argon, vacuum) were used. The materials obtained were subjected to microstructural analysis. Furthermore, hydrostatic weighing in deionized water according to the PN EN ISO 2738: 2001 standard was used to evaluate density, porosity and water absorption capacity. Topology of the surface of the materials was also determined.

The aim of this work was to obtain porous titanium sponges in a powder metallurgy process which might be applied as medical implants. The attempt of process optimization was carried out. Selection of parameters such as biological solution, temperature of thermal treatment and porogen amount allowed to obtain titanium samples with different porosity and proper mechanical properties. Two types of obtaining methods were presented in this work. First (thermal treatment in argon atmosphere) which was not sufficient due to material destruction and second (thermal treatment in vacuum atmosphere) which allows to obtain titanium samples with expected parameters.
