Low-altitude photogrammetry for the digital documentation of truss bridges was evaluated using the Niestępowo railway viaduct as a case study. A global reconstruction was compared with local modeling of a truss joint based on a subset of images from the same UAV survey (Agisoft Metashape 2.1.2). The results show that the global model is sufficient for general geometric inventory (dimensional differences <2%), whereas the local model markedly improves the measurement accuracy of structural details (error reduction of 83 – 100%) while requiring a short processing time (<30min).

The article discusses the application of digital twins in modern production plants. Challenges for the industry are presented. Next, the concept of a Digital Twin (DT) is introduced. An overview of technologies utilised by DT is provided and specific applications of the DT are discussed: to the logistics and manufacturing processes. The predictive quality control is covered as an important element of a DT. Finally, the problem of integration of digital technologies into plants systems is addressed. The modern challenges for the industry are mainly related to contradictive market requirements, such as high quality v. low price. There are difficulties for workers, too, who lose their positions or are forced to retrain or change their specialisations. The DT technologies are mostly related to sensorics and communications, which enable a bidirectional relation between the DT and the process. This constitutes an actual advantage and contributes to the effectiveness of production plants.

In civil engineering, information systems are increasingly being utilized, particularly Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. BIM is currently most prominently used in the design and construction phases, with less intensity observed in the implementation of solutions in later phases of operation and/or demolition. However, these issues mainly concern recently constructed objects, for which a digital twin was created at the design stage, greatly facilitating the decision-making process for managers to implement such solutions. In this article, the authors focus on presenting an example of using the Common Data Environment (CDE) platform for managing an existing building, for which 3D documentation was not created in earlier stages of the lifecycle. For analysis and as an attempt to implement the use of BIM technology, building D-2 located on the AGH campus was selected. Virtual documentation in the form of a “digital twin” was prepared for the selected object. The traditional and currently practiced property management plan was analyzed. Firstly, a plan for repetitive tasks was presented, including required building inspections and cyclical work performed. Subsequently, a process of action in case of a selected failure was developed. The traditional management plan was compared with the one prepared using the digital platform. The advantages and disadvantages of each solution were identified, and the validity of introducing process improvement for building administration using the selected tool was verified.

Manualna segmentacja, przeprowadzana we współpracy z konserwatorami i historykami architektury, pozostaje nieodzownym elementem procesu HBIM. W artykule omówiono metodologie i wyzwania związane z segmentacją semantyczną w HBIM, podkreślając jej podwójną rolę: w tworzeniu cyfrowych bliźniaków i wspieraniu współpracy interdyscyplinarnej. Łącząc precyzję geometryczną z głębią semantyczną, HBIM wspiera wieloaspektowość tworzonych modeli i zapewnia zachowanie integralności kulturowej.

Semantic segmentation is crucial in Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM), enabling not only precise geometric documentation, but also the preservation of cultural and historical values. Technologies such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) or photogrammetry provide the basis for so-called “digital twinning” of heritage, but 3D models alone—lacking semantic enrichment—do not reflect the full context of heritage buildings. Manual segmentation, carried out in collaboration with conservators and architectural historians, remains an indispensable part of the HBIM process. It captures the nuances of materials, construction techniques or artistic details that automated algorithms often miss. The result is digital twins that faithfully reflect not only the spatial layout but also the cultural and historical integrity of the buildings, becoming an essential tool for effective conservation and multi-faceted heritage management. This paper discusses the methodologies and challenges of semantic segmentation in HBIM, highlighting its dual role in creating meaningful digital twins and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. By combining geometric precision with semantic depth, HBIM supports interdisciplinary collaboration and ensures the preservation of cultural integrity.

Scientific research to date indicates an increasing involvement of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the digitization process of buildings. It is recognized that BIM should take part not only in creation of three-dimensional building information models, but it is also expected to support digitization of building processes by avoiding data re-enter at different investment phases. Interoperable BIM models that are saved in IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard can be detailed geometrically and rich in non-graphical data. IFC allows combining various types of data, including measurement data, documentation and photos from construction site or building acceptances to store past, present and future states of a building. The paper attempts to simulate various actions over time for a selected building information model. The paper presents a broad and inclusive context for the so-called digital twins, which will help achieve ambitious goals of the circular economy in the future. The paper also demonstrates a technological layer dedicated to the process of creating a digital twin, including the use of a wide range of input data.

The development of digital technologies has influenced the evolution of the BIM (Building Information Modelling) concept in construction, leading to the integration of new tools such as the emerging Digital Twin and the Digital Shadow. Digital Shadow serves as an intermediate step between a static BIM model and a fully functional Digital Twin. It enables the collection of data from sensors and their automatic updating in the digital model. A Digital Twin, on the other hand, should allows two-way interaction – data is not only received, but also processed and used for building control. The objective of this article is to provide a comparative analysis of the definitions of Digital Shadow and Digital Twin, as well as the potential applications of these technologies. The article presents a comparison of the possibilities offered by Digital Shadow as an intermediate step towards the full use of Digital Twin technology. Digital Shadow is employed to delineate a digital model that interacts with real data; however, it is not yet a fully autonomous model. It is designed to update the BIM model in real time by extracting data from the construction or existing real object. The Digital Twin concept has been demonstrated to facilitate a range of benefits, including but not limited to enhanced energy management, optimised costs, and precise real-time performance monitoring of a building or its components. It facilitates not only the acquisition of data from physical objects, but also, subsequent to analysis, enables the control of elements or devices installed in the object. From the perspective of implementing a construction project, the scope of the adopted concept and the dynamic nature of construction projects are also important. The efficacy of data analysis utilising Digital Twin or Digital Shadow models is contingent upon the integrity of the data, necessitating advanced technical expertise and the contribution of specialised professionals.

W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję integracji klasycznych pomiarów geodezyjnych i naziemnego skaningu laserowego (TLS) z modelowaniem w środowisku BIM (Autodesk Revit) w celu dokumentowania pionowości stalowego komina. Opracowana metoda integracji danych pomiarowych z modelem BIM zapewnia precyzyjną dokumentację stanu technicznego obiektu. Utworzony cyfrowy bliźniak komina umożliwia bieżący monitoring konstrukcji i wspomaga planowanie prac utrzymaniowych.

The article presents a concept for integrating classical geodetic measurements and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) with Building Information Modeling (Autodesk Revit) to document the verticality of a steel chimney. Periodic geodetic measurements of the axis of an approximately 60-meter-high steel chimney were carried out using a tachymetric (total station) method and 3D terrestrial laser scanning, providing an accuracy on the order of 5 mm. Based on the acquired measurement data, a detailed 3D model of the structure was created in the BIM environment. The BIM model of the chimney should be supplemented with measurement results from different years, which will allow for the analysis of changes the geometry of the structure over time. The measurement results showed that the maximum deviation of the chimney’s axis from vertical at the top of the structure is about 50 mm. It was found that the observed deviations fall within the permissible limits according to the applicable standards. The developed method of integrating survey data with the BIM model provides precise documentation of the structure’s technical condition. The created digital twin of the chimney enables ongoing monitoring of the structure and supports the planning of maintenance work.

Managing operating modes in a multimode production system represents a complex challenge that necessitates both meticulous and reactive planning. The challenge resides in coordinating and opti-mizing the different modes to address variations in demand while ensuring optimum makespan. A multimode system integrates multiple operating modes to accommodate any disturbances that may affect the system. This paper addresses the issue of selecting the appropriate mode to activate in re-sponse to the occurrence of a failure. By using Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Digital Twin (DT), the RL agent uses a state space (St) provided by a Digital Twin, to target its action (A) which consists of making a decision about which mode should be activated and which modes should be deactivated. The combination of the RL agent with the multimode system via the Digital Twin enables real-time adaptation to a dynamic environment, with the possibility of virtually testing the decisions made by the RL agent before their actual implementation, and consequently enhancing the performance of com-plex industrial systems. An innovative multimode scheduling approach will be targeted for the discrete case.

Research objectives and hypothesis/research questions: In this study, there are two theorized foundations: First-the adopting of Digital Twin technology has a positive impact on the financial performance of the case subject company. Second-the differences in financial performance, measured by operating profit and revenues, before and after the adoption of Digital Twin technology are statistically significant. Research methods: The use of dummy variable regression analysis and independent T test to validate the impact of Digital Twin on financial performance. Main results: The empirical results of this study demonstrate that the adoption of Digital Twin (DT) technology has had a substantial and statistically significant impact on Huawei’s financial performance. Both operating profit and total revenues increased markedly in the years following DT implementation in 2015, with regression and T-test analyses confirming the robustness of these trends. These results indicate a financial improvement that closely follows the predicted advantages to be achieved through the digital twin approach, such as increased operational efficiency, preventive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making. These findings are in agreement with existing literature emphasizing the economic and strategic importance of DT technologies. For instance, improvements in forecasting and operational cost savings due to DT adoption were cited by Bassey, Opoku-Boateng, Antwi et al. (2024) and Saini, Sharma, Mathur et al. (2022) in the case of the energy and building industries. Likewise, Bányai and Kovács (2023) reported significant improvements in ROI and NPV due to RFID-based digital twins in manufacturing contexts, mirroring the pattern seen with Huawei’s rising profits and revenues. Again, Korepin, Mohamed, Zhaksylyk et al. (2024) and Svadkovsky (2024) documented strong revenue growth in high-tech sectors after the DT integration, giving more supporting evidence to the generalization of our results to digital-intensive industries. Implications for theory and practice: Because of the constraints, future research would concentrate on multi-firm, multi-industry datasets to validate and generalize findings across diverse contexts. Sector-specific drivers, barriers, and enabling conditions for successful DT would also merit attention. A further combining of financial metrics with qualitative assessments could contrive to a more complete view regarding how digital twins affect firm behavior as well as long-term competitiveness.

Modern logistics processes in warehouses require advanced automation to increase operational efficiency and optimize goods flow management. This article presents a simulation of logistics processes using Factory I/O software and a real Siemens S7-1200 controller. The process implementation was based on the GEMMAGRAFCET methodology, allowing precise modeling, analysis, and control of automated logistics systems. The study involved configuring a test setup consisting of a PLC controller, a computer with Factory I/O and TIA Portal software, and a virtual warehouse model. The developed control algorithm, written in ladder logic (LAD), provided support for various operating modes (continuous and cyclic), package movement management, and the implementation of emergency procedures. The use of a digital twin enabled a detailed analysis of the system’s operation before its deployment, allowing the identification of potential errors and optimization of logistics processes. The research results confirm the effectiveness of integrating simulation software with a physical PLC controller for optimizing and verifying warehouse processes. The GEMMA-GRAFCET methodology proved to be a useful tool for structuring and visualizing control logic. The obtained results highlight the potential of simulation in the design and improvement of logistics systems, which translates into increased operational efficiency in real industrial conditions.

This document presents the analysis and optimisation of a digital twin created from paper documentation. It explores the potential applications of the model at various stages of a building's lifecycle and the challenges associated with relying solely on paper documentation. The modelling process is more demanding in such cases; however, it allows for the assessment of beneficialand feasible modifications to reduce energy consumption. To achieve this, a model was developed in Autodesk Revit, and an analysiswas conducted using Autodesk Insight in three versions: a design based on the paper documentation, a model reflecting the actual state of the building, and an optimised version derived from the results of the first two models.

In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has been increasingly used in the design and construction phases of building projects. However, there is still a lack of information regarding the implementation and evaluation of BIM during the longest phase of a building’s lifecycle, which is its operation. More and more often, various systems and management methods are being employed for such real estate properties. However, these issues primarily concern newly constructed objects for which digital BIM documentation was created during the design phase. The situation is different for properties that have been in operation for an extended period or for those that lack a virtual model. Highlighting the benefits of creating and subsequently utilizing an existing building model, the authors present a practical example of BIM technology implementation in the management of existing real estate located within the AGH campus. They particularly emphasize the possibility of using readily available tools, which significantly enhance the management of the virtual building model without the need for modeling skills or complex software operation. For this purpose, they propose using an Excel spreadsheet. With the appropriate integration with Revit, it allows for the real-time flow of data, making it easy to incorporate current changes into the model.

- Planowanie i organizację przeglądów i serwisów: Skoordynowane planowanie regularnych kontroli i konserwacji. Autorzy proponują wykorzystać znany i łatwy w obsłudze Excel do bieżącej koordynacji przeglądów technicznych w modelu. Parametry ustawione w Revit mogą być łatwo eksportowane do Excela, gdzie pracownicy administracji mogą wprowadzić zmiany dotyczące nowych dat, planowanych przeglądów i serwisów. Wykorzystanie modelu w połączeniu z arkuszem kalkulacyjnym do wymiany bieżącej informacji ułatwia kontrolowanie wielu wersji dokumentów, umożliwia porównywanie różnych wersji z różnych okresów i śledzenie ewentualnych zmian.

In recent years, the construction of large-scale engineering structures has involved numerous links in the construction process, including design, construction, supervision, material supply, and so forth. The coordination and cooperation between these links are of paramount importance. The presence of several linkages during the building process raises the possibility of communication breakdowns and information transfer delays, which can negatively affect the project’s overall progress and quality. To overcome these obstacles, the study constructed a safety management model for the construction of large engineering structures by introducing digital twin technology. This model was then optimized and improved by using an inverse neural network algorithm based on particle swarm optimization. The outcomes of the improved model were subjected to testing, and the findings demonstrated that the model trained by the research exhibited an exceptionally high degree of accuracy in the test, with a prediction accuracy of 98.2%. Especially in the stress prediction of the cable, by comparing the predicted value of the research model with the actual value, it was found that the prediction accuracy was as high as 99.1%. In addition, the model also showed excellent performance in the eigenvalue system, and the EV value of the model was as high as 0.978. The model was also able to accurately identify the critical components under specific working conditions. From the above results, it can be observed that the research model has reached the expected standard in terms of performance and reliability, and has strong application value in the prediction of structural safety management of large-scale projects.
