Testy terenowe potwierdziły przydatność lokalnych pomiarów do wykrywania krótkoterminowych zmian warunków i generowania ostrzeżeń. Zaprezentowane rozwiązanie pokazuje, że dane pogodowe rejestrowane w czasie rzeczywistym mogą służyć nie tylko jako źródło informacji, ale również istotne wsparcie systemów bezpieczeństwa.

Atmospheric phenomena, due to their unpredictable nature in local environments, may severely impact safety of humans and infrastructure. Forecasts and predictions, while useful, do not always apply in real world. This creates a need to acquire real-time data in the vicinity of protected facilities. This article focuses on the benefits of using real-time, locally sourced data as a support for safety systems. It also emphasizes how adverse weather conditions may impact humans, appliances, as well as emergency response time. Topic of this article was a part of bachelor’s engineering project: a weather station designed for integration with existing safety systems. On-site tests have proven this design to be useful as a local source of local, short-term weather data to detect potentially negative weather conditions, as well as a source of alarms and warnings for the operator. Presented solution shows that real-time weather data may not function just as a standalone device, but also that it can support and extend the functionality of existing safety systems.

Climate change is causing increasingly frequent extreme events (including strong winds), which are becoming an integral part of the natural environment. In 2017, from the 11th to 12th of August, a storm passed causing catastrophic damage in general and to forest resources in particular. The study aims to determine the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and other GIS tools and techniques for estimating forest damage caused by the storm in the Przymuszewo Forest Inspectorate. The analysis of forest cover changes was performed using the NDVI and BI2 index as well as unsupervised classification predicated on satellite imagery obtained before and after the storm. It was calculated that a total of 2,048.1 hectares of forest was damaged based on the NDVI index and 1,661.7 hectares based on the unattended classification, whereas the area of agricultural and and non-forest land based on the BI2 index was 1,739.1 hectares. These figures are comparable to the records of post-storm losses from the Przymuszewo Forest Inspectorate. This indicates a considerable feasibility of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery in assessing damage caused by extreme phenomena (strong winds) in forest areas, which is true both on a regional and global scale owing to the wide range of imaging (up to 290 km). The only limitation for Sentinel-2 satellites is heavy cloud cover, as the emitted radiation does not penetrate clouds.

This study tackles the question: Do very high-resolution convective-permitting regional climate model (RCM) simulations add value compared to coarser RCM runs for certain extreme weather conditions, namely strong wind and storm situations? Ten strong storm cases of the last two decades were selected and dynamically downscaled with the RCM COSMO-CLM (24 and 2.8 km grid point distance). These cyclones crossed the high-resolution model domain, which encompasses the German Bight, Northern Germany, and parts of the Baltic Sea. One storm case study (storm Christian of October 2013) is discussed in more detail in order to analyze the smallscale storm features and the associated potential added value of the high-resolution simulation. The results indicate an added value for atmospheric dynamical processes such as convective precipitation or post-frontal cloud cover. The multiple storm analysis revealed added value for the high-resolution regional climate simulation for 10 m wind speed, mean sea level pressure, and total cloud cover for most storms which were examined, but the improvements are small. Wind direction and precipitation were already well simulated by the coarser RCM and the higher resolution could often not add any value for these variables. The analysis showed that the added value is more distinct for the synoptic comparisons than for the multiple storm study analyzed with statistical measures like the Brier Skill Score.

The paper presents the results of study of convective cloud development over land and sea. The study was based on data from the Gdańsk-Rębiechowo radar and upper air sounding from the Łeba aerological station. Radar data from the classical channel were analyzed for the atmosphere scanned at 6 elevation angles of the antenna beam. Vertical profiles of the atmosphere along selected paths presenting radiolocation reflectivity in the detected cloud structures were produced using the recorded radiolocation reflectivity. Conclusions concerning the cloud structure, the physical state of water in the clouds and the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere were formulated as the results of comprehensive analysis of the radar and upper air sounding data. The obtained values of selected parameters and indices were used to quantitatively describe selected physical processes and to formulate forecasts concerning weather phenomena that might pose threats to land, air and sea transport as well as for some industrial and agricultural branches. The developed method of radar and aerological data processing will be applied to further studies of convective clouds in other regions. It will also enable to assess the impact of environmental conditions on the development of convective processes.

The paper presents an analysis of a rapid atmospheric process which in the beginning of December of 2013 moved over Europe from NNW in the form of a deep cyclone. The analysis aim is to verify the Weather Research & Forecasting Model results of daily numerical weather forecasts of extremely dynamic atmospheric processes. The applied spatial resolution of the computational grid of 36.3 km does not reveal the sub-grid processes. In case of the Xaver cyclone development and movement, the spatial step may be of significant importance. It is planned to analyze the case using data computed at better resolutions.

The paper presents results of research concerning meteorological and hydrological conditions in the storm related with the Xaver cyclone moving fast over the Baltic Sea. The analyses were based on remote sensing data from radars in Świdwin and Gdańsk-Rębiechowo and hydrometeorological data from direct measurements conducted at the coastal stations of the Polish Navy, marine stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, hydrometeorological station on the “Baltic Beta” oil rig and the Coastal Research Station of the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Lubiatowo. The assessment of the synoptic situation was made using surface weather charts, satellite images of cloud cover and meteorological radars products. The measurement data were used to analyze the surface and upper air wind fields for assessment of the hydrological situation (water condition, height and direction of the significant and maximum waves) and evaluation of threats to sea navigation and coastal infrastructure.

This work presents the development of synoptic situation which resulted in storm in the region of western part of the Gdańsk Gulf on 13–14 October 2009 and characterizes the changeability of hydro-meteorological conditions in the period preceding the storm, during the storm noted on 13–14 October and in the period just after the storm. This work has made use of the data of the observation net of the Maritime Office in Gdynia. The depression responsible for the stormy weather on the south Baltic Sea was following the Vb trajectory according to van Bebber classification (Fig. 2) and the storm developed on the edge of high pressure area with its centre over Scandinavia (Fig. 6). The maximum wind speed was noted on 14 October and in the North Port in Gdansk it reached the value of 32 mźs–1 (Fig. 3). The wind was very gusty. A few-day lasting stormy N-NE winds (Fig. 4) resulted in very high seas. On 14 October the significant wave reached 4.2–4.3 m and the maximum wave was 7.8–7.9 m high. The storm overflows exceeded the alarm states of water (Fig. 7). There were some disturbances in the work of the ports of Gdynia and Gdańsk, destruction of some hydro-technical equipment, tourist infrastructure and rapid abrasion of coasts.

Comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the coupled solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system is of utmost interest, both from the perspective of solar system astrophysics and geophysics research and from the perspective of space applications. The physical processes involved in the dynamical evolution of this complex coupled system are pertinent not only for the Sun-Earth connection, but also for major phenomena in other astrophysical systems. Furthermore, the conditions in geospace collectively termed space weather affect the ever increasing technological assets of mankind in space and therefore need to be understood, quantified and efficiently forecasted. The present collaborative paper communicates recent advances in geospace dynamic coupling research through modeling, simulations and data analysis and discusses future directions.
