Porównano wyniki wytrzymałości powietrza, dwutlenku węgla, azotu i argonu.

The European Union's regulation to phase out the insulating gas – sulfur hexafluoride, used in high-voltage systems, took effect in 2024. The compound is considered a very potent greenhouse gas. For this reason, there was an urgent need to find an alternative gas that could replace the existing solution. The article presents the results of preliminary studies of gases that could be used in high-voltage systems. In a specially designed pressure system, equipped with an electrode system, measurements of electric strength as well as partial discharges – using the acoustic method - were carried out. The tests were performed at several different levels of overpressure. The results of air, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon strength were compared.

The paper concerns the possibility of using wavelet transform parameters of acoustic emission signals to assess the condition of steel elements of devices. Experimental studies were conducted involving the excitation of steel plates with various defects. The wavelet type was selected and a multiresolution analysis of the recorded signals was performed. The tests and statistical analysis of the obtained results allowed for the correlation of wavelet detail parameters, in particular the distribution of normalized amplitudes of individual details, with the type of defect.

This work investigates how progressive microdamage accumulates in intact human fourth ribs under bending loads and how acoustic emission (AE) signals reflect that deterioration. Twenty-four ex vivo ribs (eighteen under quasi-static (< 0.0004 s −1) and six under dynamic (0.012–0.042 s −1)) were subjected to three-point bending while AE sensors recorded microcrack activity near regions of peak tensile stress. To accommodate large deformations and complex geometry, we applied finite strain theory and described the mechanical response with an orthotropic continuum damage model. Damage growth followed a Weibull distribution, and stiffness degradation closely tracked the damage variable. We then correlated AE event counts with damage progression by fitting an empirical relationship that captures both the gradual accumulation of low-damage events and the abrupt increases in events near failure. Our analyses reveal three key outcomes. First, the Hild-Lemaître quasi-brittle damage model provides an excellent fit to stress-strain data across all strain-rate regimes. Second, cumulative AE counts increase monotonically with internal damage, confirming AE as a reliable real-time proxy for microcrack evolution. Third, AE-damage curves differ qualitatively with strain rate: quasi-static tests produce strongly convex profiles culminating in a near-vertical asymptote, whereas dynamic tests exhibit an initial concave segment followed by a more linear trend before ultimate failure. Furthermore, it was observed that increasing strain rate elevates both ultimate and damage strains, whereas subject age is associated with reductions in ultimate stress and stiffness. In contrast, BMI exerts only minor effects. Finally, b-value analysis did not yield predictive insight for human cortical bone fracture, unlike in concrete. Together, these findings establish AE monitoring coupled with continuum damage mechanics as a powerful framework for characterizing rate-dependent failure in rib cortical bone, which could inform real-time clinical monitoring during high-risk procedures.

The article discusses the methodology for determining mechanical vibrations of the external surface of an induction motor caused by the magnetic field, along with the associated emission of acoustic power. The averaged distribution of the magnetic induction field in the motor gap determined the magnetic stress field, which, after processing into the spectral domain, allowed the calculation of the mechanical and acoustic parameters of the motor in this domain. The calculation results were compared with measurements for both mechanical vibrations and acoustic power.

Composite materials play a crucial role in the development of lightweight and innovative industry. For high-performance structures such as composite pressure vessels, tubes and pipelines, filament-winding technology is used as a highly automated and reliable manufacturing method. In this study, the mechanical investigation of composite tubes is performed. The analysis consists of a comparison of basalt and glass fibre reinforced plastics (BFRP and GFRP) under axial compression loading. The tubes were manufactured with one layer wound using a 55° winding angle and additional hoop reinforcement in the gripping area. During axial compression loading, the acoustic emission method was used to identify the damage modes occurring in the two groups of materials. Post-failure observations were conducted to assess the crack type and geometry. The results showed that GFRP exhibited superior performance over BFRP in terms of compressive strength (41% higher) and absorbed energy (20% higher).

The stability of rock mass is an important safety issue in the process of deep mining, and the dynamic disturbance caused by excavation and blasting is an important factor affecting the stability of rock mass. To deeply understand the mechanical characteristics and damage mechanisms of deep sandstone after local impact disturbance by high prestresses, a self-developed rock disturbance system was used to carry out disturbance followed by a uniaxial compression test (UCT) on the rock samples. The whole process of UCT was monitored utilising acoustic emission (AE) technology, and the particle size and fractal dimension of debris after sandstone failure were analysed to explore its strength-weakening mechanism. The experimental study elucidated the influence mechanism of the coupled action of disturbance frequency f and impact area s on the strength weakening effect of sandstone, i.e., high prestressing force is the prerequisite and dominant factor of rock strength weakening, while the perturbation f and the s accelerate the induced rock damage. The fractal dimension D can be used to quantitatively evaluate the fragmentation characteristics of sandstone disturbed by local impact (between 1.68 and 2.14), and it shows a good linear increasing trend with the increase of local impact disturbance.

The article presents the results of research on the effect of cyclic freeze-thaw and UV irradiation on the structure of fibre-cement boards in an aging chamber. In order to demonstrate the impact of the above-mentioned factors, the panels were first tested using the acoustic emission method in the three-point bending test. These studies showed a clear decrease in the number of recorded EA events for the tested boards, especially for those that were subjected to freeze-thaw cycles compared to the reference boards. Then, in order to more accurately illustrate the changes occurring in the structure of the tested boards, tests were carried out using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

This study employs axial compression testing to analyze the impact of mosaic patterns on the mechanical properties, specifically the strength and stiffness, of composite tubes. Three mosaic patterns (1/1, 2/1, and 3/1) and three winding angles (45°, 55°, and 75°) were selected for evaluation. Additionally, the acoustic emission (AE) technique was utilized to investigate the damage mechanisms occurring in the composite structures. The results showed that the higher the mosaic pattern the higher the stiffness and strength of the composite tubes under axial compression loading.

The technique of acoustic emission has been shown to be useful for monitoring and measurement of transportation and mixing of feed concentrates and other ingredients. This method is ideally suited for flow/no flow alarm indicators, requiring no calibration and only basic electronic support. If the method is to be used for analysis of mixtures, the components must be sufficiently different in particle size or density. Besides that, the detection of particle breakdown and damage should be possible.

W 2017 roku UDT rozpoczął projekt opracowania systemu oceny poziomu i ilości osadów w zbiornikach magazynowych ropy naftowej, z wykorzystaniem techniki AE i termografii. W kolejnych latach realizacji projektu opracowano kompletną metodykę i procedurę oceny poziomu, objętości i kształtu osadów oraz proces weryfikacji wyników. W artykule przedstawiono wykorzystanie techniki AE i metody termografii oraz analizę i przetwarzanie danych pomiarowych w ramach systemu do oceny poziomu, objętości i kształtu osadów wewnątrz zbiornika magazynowego.

When crude oil is stored in large tanks, invariably high-molecular-weight organic sediments (paraffin) are deposited but the resulting sediments also contain solid particles (sand, corrosion products, etc.) as well as water. After some period of in-service of the tank, these deposits build up to form a sludge, which causes reduction in the storage capacity. Knowledge of the shape and volume of the sludge at the bottom of the tank is important, as it allows determining the best form of counteracting and controlling the level of sludge. In 2017 the Office of Technical Inspection launched a project to develop a system for assessing the level and quantity of sludge in crude oil storage tanks, using the AE technique and thermography. In the following years of duration of the project, a complete methodology and procedure for assessing the level, volume and shape of sludges was developed, as well as a process of verifying the results. In this paper are presented the use of AE technique and thermography method as well as the analysis and processing of measurement data within the system for assessing the level, volume and shape of sludge inside a storage tank.

In the extremely close distance of lower coal seam mining, affected by secondary mining, the fractures expand through the layer in the composite roof, and this process is complex and diverse. In this paper, a three-point bending load test of different strength rocks and their combinations is conducted by combining acoustic emission. The results indicate that the overall deflection angle in the lower roof is approximately 8° smaller than that in the upper roof. When the fracture extends from the brittle roof to the plastic roof, the deflection angle in both types of roofs increases. When the plastic roof extends to the brittle roof, the deflection angle of the brittle roof increases while that of the plastic roof decreases. The damage degree of the composite rock mass during the failure process lies between the two single rock masses that make up the composite rock mass. The damage is dense at the initial expansion moment of the fracture in the rock mass, but weak when the interface expands through the layer. The energy evolution of the composite roof mainly depends on the high-strength roof, and the horizontal migration process of the fracture at the interface does not release energy.

The proper functioning of the fuel cell system depends on the proper operation of all its subsystems. One of the key subsystems is the oxidant supply system, which is responsible for supplying oxygen for the electrochemical reaction taking place in the cell. It also transports the reaction products, i.e., water, outside the fuel cell stack, and in some cases removes excess heat generated in the stack. Changes in the technical condition of machine individual elements always result in changes in operating or residual parameters; however, it is necessary to select appropriate diagnostic methods to be able to use these changes to assess the machine’s technical condition. This article presents the results of research focused on assessing the possibilities of diagnosing the oxidant supply subsystem, in particular, too low an oxidant flow leading to oxygen starvation and cathode flooding, based on the analysis of the voltage occurring in individual cells of the stack as well as on the basis of vibration and acoustic emission (AE) measurements. The presented results show that the faulty operation of that system can be indicated either through electrical and vibroacoustic/acoustic emission measurements.

To investigate the precursor characteristics of failure of weathered granite (WG), we conducted uniaxial compression tests on WG specimens using the RMT-150C rock mechanics testing system and the PCI-II acoustic emission (AE) device. We analyzed the AE parameters based on the critical slowing down (CSD) and AE b-value theoretical methods. The study shows that the peak strain value of WG under uniaxial compression is < 1% and the stress falls off rapidly after the peak, and the specimen mainly undergoes brittle failure. The failure process can be divided into four stages: compression stage, elastic deformation stage, plastic development stage, and post-peak failure stage, in which the compression stage lasts longer. The ringing count rate and its cumulative amount can effectively indicate the process of WG failure during loading. As the failure nears, microcracks within the WG accumulate and expand, leading to the appearance of macroscopic cracks. At the same time, the cumulative ringing count rate increases rapidly while the ringing count rate converges to the peak. Furthermore, the rapid increase of autocorrelation coefficient and variance obtained from the CSD theory analysis of ringing counts can be used as a precursor signal of WG failure. The “inflection point” before the sharp rise of the variance curve can be regarded as an early warning point of failure. Based on the characteristic that the b-value shows a large rate fluctuation decrease before the failure of WG, the autocorrelation coefficient and variance variation law obtained by CSD theory and the early warning point are analyzed simultaneously with the b-value variation law, which can accurately grasp the failure characteristics of WG in mines.

Uniaxial compression acoustic emission (AE) tests were conducted on low-strength molybdenum ore (LSMO) to investigate its deformation and failure laws and AE characteristics. The stress-strain curve and AE parameter data of LSMOs were obtained by uniaxial compression AE test, and the relationships of stress, AE parameter, amplitude fractal dimension, and AE b value with loading time were analyzed accordingly to obtain the general law of their deformation and failure and a series of AE characteristics. The research shows that under the action of uniaxial stress, the failure mode of LSMOs mainly shows brittle failure, and the failure form mainly shows monoclinic shear failure. The stress-strain curve shows obvious plastic-elastic deformation, the plastic deformation time is long, and the division of each stage of deformation failure is not obvious. The simultaneous occurrence of large surges in ringing count and energy to higher orders of magnitude can be used as precursor information for failure destabilization of LSMOs. The evolution process of AE parameters of LSMO corresponds well with its deformation and failure process, and the variation pattern of ringing counts and energy shows a high consistency. With increasing stress, the amplitude correlation dimension and b value are mainly in the form of "falling-rising-falling-fluctuating". The results of the study can provide some theoretical basis for the assessment of the stability of the mine surrounding rock and the determination of a reasonable and effective reinforcement plan.
