With growing technical needs in terms of balancing consumer lifestyles, trends, regulations, sustainability, and safety, as well as enabling marketing, there has been an explosion of interest and investment in new food contact materials (FCM) in recent years [8, 9, 14]. In today’s world of short attention spans and growing concern for the climate, packaging is no longer just a container. It has become a promise: of freshness, transparency, and responsible sustainability. This article presents the most promising alternatives for food packaging, both from the world of science and market innovations already implemented in our “retail” and “consumer” lives. Scientific literature and market reports indicate that innovations are mainly focused on: biopolymers, nanomaterials, active and intelligent packaging systems, as well as the sustainable use of recyclates and the improvement of traditional polymers [1, 3, 21, 23].
The need to search for alternative packaging for takeaway food in the HoReCa sector (i.e., hotels, restaurants, and catering) strictly relates to EU regulations. Directive (EU) 2019/904 prohibits placing on the EU market nine types of single-use plastic products, including food containers intended for consumption onsite or takeaway made of expanded polystyrene (EPS). This research aims to assess the possibility of replacing the EPS box with other packaging. A specific goal of this study is also to compare packaging in terms of the rate at which they transfer thermal energy by heat conduction. The experimental data were described by Newton’s law of cooling, based on which the constant k of each object (a food simulant in a certain type of packaging) is determined. When assessing substitutes, the thermal insulating properties of the packages are investigated, as well as their ability to maintain shape and tightness after contact with semi-liquid food. The availability of the selected packaging on the local market and its price are also considered. The research has shown that disposable packaging for takeaway food is currently more useful than reusable options. The packaging variants, which are confirmed as suitable for cooked solid dishes with semi-liquid additives, are ranked in the following order according to their utility index (largest to smallest): PPmet bag, XPS menubox, AL bag with PP tray, PAP/ PE bag, PP reusable container, GL reusable container, PAP/AL envelope, PP box, and rPET container. This study indicates the need for further research into innovative packaging for takeaway food, including lowering the weight of existing materials while simultaneously increasing their thermal insulation or searching for new bio-based materials.

W publikacji przedstawiono aspekty oceny opakowań związane z badaniem substancji migrujących do żywności. Scharakteryzowano mechanizmy migracji i opisano proces badawczy prowadzony z zastosowaniem symulantów żywności.

Packaging is an integral part of food products, ensuring their quality and durability by protecting them from external conditions. Due to the rapid development of packaging materials and technologies, it is essential to identify chemical substances added during their manufacture that pose risks to human health. These include Intentionally Added Substances (IAS) used during the manufacturing process and Non- Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS). Due to the lack of detailed legal regulations in the EU, assessing the packaging safety is a complex process. Aspects of packaging assessment related to testing the substances migrating into food are precented. Migration mechanisms are characterized and testing process using the food simulants is described. The need for further development of assessing methods for packaging safety is also highlighted, particularly concerning the packaging their manufacture using recycled raw materials.
W artykule przedstawiono obecnie dostępne zalecenia i wytyczne dotyczące olejów mineralnych w wyrobach z papieru i tektury, w tym przeznaczonych do kontaktu z żywnością.

Mineral oils are almost universally present in our environment. Their constituents can penetrate into food of both plant and animal origin in many different ways. From the perspective of their chemical structure, the main compounds of interest are mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH). Both types are easily absorber by humans with food and can accumulate in both adipose tissue and certain organs such as the liver, spleen, or lymph nodes.
Stosowanie tworzyw sztucznych pochodzących z recyklingu, otrzymanych w wyniku obróbki mechanicznej reguluje rozporządzenie Komisji (WE) nr 282/2008 w sprawie materiałów i wyrobów z tworzyw sztucznych pochodzących z recyklingu, a przeznaczonych do kontaktu z żywnością, z późniejszymi zmianami.

Mechanical recycling of packaging wastes allows the recovery of plastics and their re-use in food packaging. However, to ensure that they have appropriate quality, the recycling processes for the production of food contact materials must ensure high removal efficiency in challenge tests. The use of products intended for contact with food containing recycled plastics obtained as a result of mechanical treatment is regulated by the Commission Regulation EC) no 282/2008 on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. According to this legal regulation, the recycling process that results in plastics for contact with food must be assessed by EFSA and then obtained the European Commission authorization.
