Polish opinions on the construction of the first nuclear power plant have been regularly surveyed for nearly three decades. Unstable support, fluctuating between 30 and 40 per cent, has risen sharply in recent years to over 80 per cent. According to some, this unprecedented situation is linked to the threat of war and the need to strengthen military and energy security. However, the experience of many countries that have opted for nuclear power shows that public support can quickly collapse, among other things due to insufficient identification of hidden fears. This article proposes a method of researching public attitudes towards the development of nuclear power that complements the survey method. It analyses the activity of Internet users in terms of searching for terms related to the construction of various types of power plants, including nuclear power plants, and co-occurring terms with positive and negative connotations (benefits vs. defects rate). The correlation results indicate that Internet searches for information on the most negative consequences of power plant construction only occur in the case of nuclear power, while searches for positive consequences occur in the case of other types of power plants. This leads to the conclusion that despite the declared high support for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland, there are still hidden fears in society about the development of this technology – and to a greater extent than for other energy sources.

Nuclear power is considered one of the alternative energy sources. Although 74 years have passed since the launch of the first Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-1) in Idaho, USA, nuclear power remains irreplaceable. Despite some nuclear disasters (Three Mile Island 1979, Chernobyl 1986 or Fukushima 2011), temporarily slowing the pace of nuclear energy development, countries continue to plan investments in this energy sector. The aim of this study is to review the development of nuclear technologies, particularly in the energy sector, from the discovery of uranium radiation through the Manhattan Project and the launch of the first commercial nuclear power plant, and to the future reactors (Generation IV). This paper is important for scientists, experts from the energy industry, because it can help systematise knowledge in this area. It presents the directions and trends in the development of nuclear energy, including the construction of nuclear fuel and reactor cores. These analyses are helpful in selecting nuclear technology in research projects, production plants and energy companies.

The article traces energy’s evolution in economic thought, tracing its transition from a marginal element in pre-classical and classical theories to its current status as the biophysical foundation of economic processes. By applying a historical-analytical approach, the study emphasises a necessary methodological shift from the dominant mechanistic-deterministic paradigm toward holistic models that incorporate the laws of thermodynamics and entropy. The author concludes that nuclear energy is the logical next step in usage of incerasingly energy-dense sources, offering a sustainable path for global development within the planet’s ecological boundaries.

Content available remote Negative Effects of Over-Reaction in the Aftermath of Radiological Emergencies
EN
Despite the vast amount of literature on radiological emergencies, to the best of our knowledge there is no systematic review of probable scenarios and their consequences. A red team simulated best efforts to inflict maximal damage to the society by various means of radiological attacks. It turned out, that the direct radiogenic health conseq uences of any conceivable radiological accident, natural or man-made, are much less dangerous than those which are usually perceived. In each scenario, direct health effects are only a small part of the damage caused by fear and over-reaction; the damage is somewhat independent of the small health effect predicted for most of the scenarios. The reason is that nuclear radiation has become perceptually connected with nuclear apocalypses. This connection has caused the emotional description of radiological emergencies to frequently substitute quantitative considerations. Therefore, it is vital to educate decision makers, first responders and the public about the factual extent of possible radiological consequences, as well as about the very real danger of over-reaction. Since the extent of the countermeasures deployed is unavoidably connected, in the eye of the public, with the extent of the danger, we suggest launching educational campaigns that explain the factual extent of the radiation risk, followed by easing regulations and narrowing safety margins. Such measures will probably be the most efficient method of countering radiological terrorism: by depriving any adversary of the most important ability which is to cause an over-reaction.

Since joining the European Union, the structure of electricity generation sources has changed significantly in Poland. The role of hard coal and lignite has decreased, but in order to achieve the ambitious goals of climate neutrality by 2050, many more coal units are planned to be decommissioned. The role of renewable energy sources, especially solar energy, is to increase in the structure of energy generation, and nuclear sources and offshore wind farms are to appear. Carrying out these activities is associated with major challenges. An effective and ' socially just energy transformation is associated with ensuring a stable and reliable energy system for the entire country, as well as support for regions previously strongly dependent on the operation of coal-fired power plants. A potential solution beneficial in Polish conditions is Coal-to-Nuclear investments. These issues are the subject of research within the DEsire project, the main goal of which is to develop a plan for the modernization of the Polish energy system using generation IH and IV nuclear reactors. The article presents conclusions from the work carried out so far in the project and indicates the direction of further activities.

Energy transition process in Poland is one of the greatest challenges in the future. Potential proposals for replacing coal sources include solutions that are not only technologically and environmentally beneficial, but also take into account the social aspect. Closing coal-fired power plants without trying to sustain the industry in a given region may lead to serious consequences for the local population: lack of jobs, prospects, outflow of investors. One of the possible decarbonization paths is the Coal-to-Nuclear transformation, in which it is proposed to replace the coal—fired unit with a nuclear unit in the same location. The advantage of this solution is not only the reduction of air pollution, but also the possibility of maintaining employment in the region and potential savings at the investment stage resulting from the use of the existing infrastructure of the power plant. The paper focuses on presenting the types of possible investments within the Coal—to-Nuclear transformation. Potential locations in Poland where such a solution could be considered were also presented.

In recent decades, the concept of sustainable development has become increasingly widespread since the United Nations Convention on Climate Change was adopted. However, it is also being overused, imitated, politicized, or even ignored. This study analyzes the current conditions and long-term consequences of the European energy transition and discusses the limitations and true economic and environmental implications of implementing energy sustainability. The paper is aimed at forming an understanding of the current environmental conditions and challenges associated with the economic, financial, and environmental consequences of introducing renewables in Europe. Research has revealed that renewables, while cleaner energy sources are not necessarily sustainable as initially suspected. There are various implications and limitations, that is: an initial carbon footprint, land footprint, recycling issues, harmful impacts on wildlife and humans, moreover the efficiency and economic implications when transitioning to a net zero. As a result, it is concluded that the basic principles of the energy transition are to be introduced and considered for it to become indeed sustainable. It is also concluded that when introducing or improving an energy model, it is crucial to consider the country's initial energy and resource base. Nuclear energy should not be disregarded and should considered to be a clean energy source, as well as a safe one, particularly in the context of national security, which is heavily dependent on energy transition.

Celem artykułu jest zrozumienie obecnych warunków środowiskowych i wyzwań związanych z ekonomicznymi, finansowymi i środowiskowymi konsekwencjami wprowadzenia odnawialnych źródeł energii w Europie.

The Polish power sector is based mainly on fossil fuel combustion, of which more than 70% rep re sent hard and lignite coals. Current cli mate pol icy fore sees a significant decrease of CO2 emission to the environment leading to the need for urgent transformation of the Polish power industry into a low-car bon sector. To meet this goal, the reduction of the hard and lignite coal-based power industry is crucial. The main challenge in the power trans formation is to ensure energy security in balance with economic reliability. There are two main paths for the use of the coal plant infra structure to be considered in the present decarbonization strategies. The first one involves the complete shutdown of existing coal power plants and their substitution with a new low-emission energy source, supported by the improvement of power effective ness of the whole system. The second solution is the preservation of existing infra structure by applying the decarbonization approach through emission decrease, carbon capture, biomass combustion, natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) with additional car bon capture, renewable energy sources, geothermal power or nuclear power application. All of these options entail many tech no logical, planning and eco nomic challenges. In this paper possibility of nuclear reactor application as the retrofit of coal unit with the max i mum use of the existing infra structure is presented.

Each country creates its own scenarios for the development of the energy sector, which aim to identify different directions of development that are feasible and, moreover, support the formulated policy objectives. Therefore, the aim of the article is to analyze the economic, social and environmental effects of three different scenarios for the development of the energy sector in Poland. Each of them assumes basing the sector on a different mix of generation sources - from the dominance of coal-fired power plants, through diversification with the participation of nuclear energy, to the dominance of renewable energy sources (RES). The author reviewed possible options for the development of the Polish energy sector based on the draft Polish energy policy prepared by the government administration. The article estimated the potential for the use of domestic energy carriers until 2050 and compared the impact of each of the three scenarios on the country's energy security and economy based on the strategic document of Poland's Energy Policy. The text is an attempt of a critical assessment of opportunities and threats related to the possible implementation of individual scenarios and the scale of necessary investments. The results can serve as a starting point for understanding Poland's restraint in achieving zero emissions and contribute to the discussion about the direction of development of the Polish energy sector.

Wśród interesujących rozwiązań elektrowni jądrowych USA, Rosja i Chiny proponują zastosowanie tzw. pływających morskich elektrowni nuklearnych.

Nuclear power is advocated as a cheap, clean and reliable source of electric power for both industry and the household sector. This paper focuses on technical issues relating to commissioning a cogeneration unit for use in combination with a typical Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). Three heat extraction possibilities were analyzed and modeled in order to identify the most favorable option based on various criteria. The investigated possibilities of heat extraction were turbine bypass, steam bleeding and partial removal of heat from the network of regenerating heat exchangers. The working conditions of a municipal heat network, such as pressure drop and heat losses, were calculated and adapted to the conurbation centered on Gdansk (Poland). Annual demand was analyzed in light of the current state of development of the heating network. The operating parameters of the power plant were based on the Asco Nuclear Power Station in Spain. It was observed that certain heat extraction methods could deliver a significant increase in the weighted utilization factor.
