This article discusses the conservation of postwar urbanistic heritage on the basis of Berlin’s large-panelsystem housing estates from the years 1950–1980. It analyzes contemporary conservation models that consider social, technical and urbanistic value of these complexes increasingly often and despite their controversial aesthetic reception. Using the examples of Karl-Marx-Allee, Marzahn and Märkisches Viertel, it was shown how through adaptation strategies, resident participation and the reinterpretation of ideas of Modernism, effective preservation of this type of heritage is possible. The significance of two doctrinal documents, the Leipzig Charter and the New Leipzig Charter, which redefine the notion of monumental value in the context of twentieth-century heritage, was also noted.

Dom Książki in Poznań is one of the most characteristic modernist buildings erected in the city after the Second World War. Current construction work aims to reconstruct, extend upwards and renovate it, in addition to changing its previous function. The architectural research conducted inside Dom Książki demonstrated that the specific nature of modernist constructions requires a somewhat different approach to historic buildings and, subsequently, different research and evaluation methods. The project aimed to analyze the building’s transformations, along with determining its stratification chronology, its primary historically shaped spatial structure and preserved original form. Apart from Dom Książki’s history, the paper describes the applied research methods, as well as their impact on evaluating modernist constructions. The project findings make it possible to identify some important premises for architectural investigations and indicate selected problems related to reconstructing and restoring historic buildings from the postwar Modernist period.

EN
The article presents research on the issue of shaping greenery in the 21st century in the context of modernist architecture. The studies include an analysis of the characteristic features of gardens designed during the modernist period and contemporary concepts, a case study of a green space project in Poznań, and the formulation, based on data, of a set of features which, according to the author of the article, should characterise a modern garden designed among modernist buildings. The comparisons, examples and conclusions refer to gardens designed within urban developments in private, semi-private and public spaces. The research emphasises the role of creating well-thought-out green space layouts that highlight the characteristic features of architectural objects, combining existing details with new ideas and creating environmentally friendly spaces. The information provided can serve as guidelines for the design of greenery in the context of modernist buildings for the development of future architectural concepts. The method of green space design presented in the article may also serve as inspiration when developing concepts for the creation of landscape interiors in the context of other styles.

In Polish history, the post-World War II era saw the greatest expansion of new architectural fabric. The public and residential structures that were mass- produced during that period have now attained an age that need restorations, prompting inquiries regarding conservation protection. The preservation of residential structures, which are frequently not updated to meet contemporary requirements, is a particularly delicate topic. The modernization of such assets goes beyond conventional monument preservation. A significant obstacle in this process is the insufficient comprehension of the values inherent in the legacy of post-war architecture, alongside a deficiency in education and advocacy for this history. The article outlines several initiatives implemented in Krakow in recent years to enhance awareness of the significance of post-war architectural heritage. The initiatives related to the Złotego Wieku housing estate in Mistrzejowice district were comprehensive and may provide support for endeavors in Poland and elswhere. Their objective was social mobilization and fostering a sense of pride among their community.

In 2025, during the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Paris, Poland presented the nominated property for inscription on the World Heritage List: "Gdynia. Early Modernist City Centre". In accordance with the recommendation from the ICOMOS Evaluation, the nomination requires supplementation and the provision of certain clarifications. Nevertheless, the overall positive assessment of its Outstanding Universal Value, as well as its state of conservation and protection, provides grounds to expect that Gdynia's nomination will be resubmitted to the World Heritage Committee at its next session in 2026 and stands a strong chance of being inscribed on the WHL. Such an outcome would represent a major success, crowning the consistent efforts undertaken in Gdynia for over 20 years, encompassing the protection, revalorization, and promotion of its local heritage. However, the inscription of the Gdynia Centre on the WHL would signify, above all, the recognition of the universal value of a great achievement of reborn Poland: the construction of Gdynia. In the article, the authors, as individuals directly involved in the preparation and nomination process of Gdynia for the WHL, present the related activities, as well as the conditions and conclusions that can be drawn from this undertaking.

The article takes up the issue of multifamily housing, as well as author's solutions for public buildings in the period of modernism in Poland in the 1960s and 1970s by Prof. arch. Halina Skibniewska. Noteworthy are the innovative logistical, construction and design solutions operating on a human scale, which positively distinguished the author's realizations from the standards commonly used and in force in the reality of communist Poland. Results: Both the work and the entire professional and academic attitude of Prof. arch. Halina Skibniewska was filled with numerous end eavors and concern for the emergence of a strong social construction trend in Poland, which is to this day an unfulfilled postulate and, in the contemporary housing market with the dominant role of the developer, still far from being realized. Conclusions: The article, although devoted entirely to prof. arch. Halina Skibniewska is not purely memorial in nature, but has a concrete application dimension showing the processes of overcoming barriers in the implementation of design tasks and the innovativeness of activities in achieving the intended goals.

Despite the highly detrimental effects of tobacco on human health, the trade in tobacco products has historically been, and is likely to remain, a highly profitable venture. This article presents the complex history of the former Tobacco Factories in Lublin, which were part of the Polish Tobacco Monopoly. During the interwar period, this sector generated up to 16% of the state’s revenue. The development of the facility was primarily driven by immense market demand, which fueled the rapid expansion of the Lublin factory. This expansion necessitated the acquisition of adjacent land and the construction of large buildings, reaching a peak area of approximately 100,000 square meters. The progression of the enterprise was not halted by the actions of War, rather production ceased due to a lack of raw materials for processing, not due to damage or looting of equipment. Development was ultimately arrested only after systemic changes occurred, rendering production unprofitable and leading the underfunded facility to declare bankruptcy. This paper also discusses the transformations that have taken place in recent years following the conclusion of the facility’s liquidation process. A new company acquired the property and gradually began investing in and attempting to revitalize this degraded area of the city, which possesses significant potential despite its limited opportunities. The article addresses the historical context of the site, its current state, and possible directions for the future development of this somewhat forgotten and greatly undervalued location on the map of Lublin.

The subject of the study was to examine whether the urban planner – Krystyn Olszewski, participating in urban spatial planning, implemented the doctrinal assumptions of their modernist formatting. The analysis covered 3 representative cases of planning: post-war Warsaw, Baghdad and Singapore, where Olszewski was the Chief Designer or the Head of the Design Team. On the basis of the analysis of literature and documents, comparative research was carried out, comparing the 3 mentioned cases and confronting them with the criteria taken from the postulates of the Athens Charter of 1933. It was stated that the aim of Krystyn Olszewski's work, each time, was to implement the intentions of modernist urban planning identical with the guidelines set for the Functional City. The study results showed that there are fundamental methodological similarities between the planning of the analyzed cities, despite the differences in their climate, culture and environment.

In early 20th-century Poland, stylistic trends in literature, art and architecture were determined by Modernism. Modernism increasingly adopted the reflective outlook of Surrealism. Architecture drew inspiration initially from the art of Young Poland, then from Art Deco, and in the end from Surrealism. The transformation process can be discerned in the spas of southern Lesser Poland, a region of Poland. In Rabka, near the sanatorium for children, there appeared a park designed in the Surrealist style by Stanisław Gruszka in 1949. This article presents the cultural background of this object. This study analyses of Surrealism and Modernism as well as their interrelation. The layout of its paths can be compared to the Surrealist symbolism with its referents such as women’s heads with various attributes in the form of earrings, lips, a headdress or a fantastic bird, a sitting child or a teddy bear, or perhaps a referent of a nude. The Surrealist symmetry is not perfect, its edges similar but not identical. Only the trees retain full symmetry, enhancing the vividness of the referent under the custom pressure of its environment. Upon analysing other park designs from the period in question, it can be concluded that the park in Rabka is the first in the world to be fully Surrealist not only in its furnishings but also in its structure. What may seem abstract at first glance, actually, has its own referent whose ambiguity leads us into a dream-like reality.

Eksperymenty formalne modernizmu coraz bardziej zmierzały do postawy refleksyjnej, jaką wyznaczał surrealizm.

W obecnym centrum modernistyczne domy jedno- i wielorodzinne uzupełniają tkankę miejską. Reprezentują przeważnie formy wczesnego i umiarkowanego modernizmu. „surowym korzeniu”. Występują tu obiekty rozmieszczone wśród zieleni, często z zakomponowanymi ogrodami leśnymi i małą architekturą, które w wielu przypadkach posiadają pierwotne gabaryty i rozwiązania architektoniczne.

Residential architecture in Otwock is a reflection of the historical phases in the spatial development of the city, shaped, with certain exceptions, from the end of the 19th century. The individual districts of this locality have varied urban planning and architectural character. The identified Modern interwar buildings are present within the limits of several of these. They are integrated with the natural landscape: a forest complex and the Świder River valley. Primarily, they are found in Śródmieście [Downtown], Świder, Soplicowo, and Śródborów. Modern single– and multi–family buildings supplement the urban tissue in the present city center. They mainly represent early and moderate Modernism. Similarly, there are not many examples of Modernism in Świder. The greatest number of buildings with the qualities of Modernism understood as symbols of modernity and progress that were built and have survived to this day are the pride of two formerly peripheral housing estates: Soplicowo and Śródborów. Building tissue here was shaped differently than in historical areas, developed in different parts of the city as early as the end of the 19th century. They differed in their genesis and method of land parceling. Construction on the grounds of Soplicowo was initiated by Edward Kasperowicz, together with other partners, in a residential colony for civil servants. Śródborów was created thanks to the initiative of the “Śródborów Society.” The development of these housing estates was obviously the result of the new way of thinking in urban planning (the then popular concept of the garden–city) and their founding as new housing projects on virgin land. The structures located here are distributed amidst vegetation with composed forest gardens and small–scale architecture that, in many cases, has maintained its initial dimensions and architectural solutions. These are successively subject to changes, modernization, or even demolition. Nevertheless, these areas continue to be the site of interesting and little known examples of the architectural activities of recognized Warsaw architects as well as local builders, undertaken for investors of varied social standing. The presentation of these examples – buildings from the years 1918–1939 – is the objective of this article. It is based on many years of own research, including materials collected and developed within the framework of a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the 2nd half of 2018. The article also contains new, previously unknown information as well as discovered, unpublished archival designs from the collections of various archives. It also takes advantage of existing topical literature. The article discusses Modern buildings against a backdrop of the history and spatial development of the city of Otwock. The conducted analyses demonstrated the characteristic features of their architecture and pointed out the need to preserve and protect the most valuable examples for future generations. This article was in part made possible with the kind support of Professor Małgorzata Rozbicka, who I want to thank at this point.

W 1946 r. ukończył studia w Polskiej Szkole Architektury w Wielkiej Brytanii. Na przełomie l. 50. i 60. XX w., po około dwudziestu latach emigracji, powrócił do Polski i pracował w zespole Zbigniewa Karpińskiego nad projektami Strony Wschodniej ulicy Marszałkowskiej w Warszawie.

The article is devoted to Architect Jerzy Jakubowicz, the designer of one of Warsaw’s most iconic buildings—the PKO Bank Rotunda. Jakubowicz started his studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology prior to World War II. During the war he served as an RAF pilot. In 1946 he completed his studies at the Polish School of Architecture in Great Britain. At the turn of the 1950s and 60s, after about twenty years of emigration, he returned to Poland and worked with the team of Zbigniew Karpiński on the designs for the Eastern Side of Marszałkowska Street in Warsaw. His participation primarily involved the development of designs for the Wars and Sawa department stores (together with Architect P. Zajlich) as well as the PKO Bank pavilion, referred to as the PKO Bank Rotunda. Jakubowicz again emigrated in the second half of the 1960s. This time it was to the United States where is spent the rest of his life.

Social research in the field of cultural heritage protection can be invaluable support for specialists. Surveys allow the determination of the community's attachment to local heritage, identification of actions approved by the community, and assessment of engagement in utilizing local potential. The potential use of social research as an additional tool in monument preservation has been presented based on the results of a survey assessing the heritage of Mościce – a modernist district of Tarnów, which emerged as an autonomous locality centered around the construction of the Państwowa Fabryka Zakładów Azotowych since 1927. The study aimed to define the social perception of the value of Tarnów's Mościce district heritage by evaluating individual objects and institutions, awareness of legal forms of protection and care for its monuments, indicating organizations dealing with these issues, and exploring possibilities for revitalization, primarily through the prism of community participation. The survey was conducted using the CAWI method. Considering social opinions can be not only a formality but also a source of knowledge allowing the recognition of local community sentiments, which often influence the commitment and development of the monument preservation process. The participation of individuals without knowledge and experience in monument protection should not exclude the consideration of their ideas and observations.

The article presents an analysis of the functioning of social care for monuments in Gdynia after 2003. Several years of experience of the local government and the time that has passed since the entry into force of applicable regulations related to the institution of social guardians of monuments allow for the formulation of conclusions and showing the advantages and disadvantages of various solutions. The article presents the experience of the Office of the Municipal Conservator of Monuments in Gdynia in cooperation with both social guardians of monuments and local associations dealing with heritage protection. The authors' experience clearly shows that the provisions of the Act on the Protection and Care of Monuments, regulating the activities of social guardians of monuments, are anachronistic and in practice have minimal impact on the protection of monuments. However, the social activities of active residents using associations and other forms of collective cooperation have developed and are developing. Nowadays, online portals, especially social media, play an important role as they facilitate communication and allow for quick response. There is great public interest in the protection of monuments and considerable activity of residents in this area. In the authors' opinion, it is necessary to take advantage of new experiences and completely reformulate the principles of cooperation between monument protection authorities and the public. Such cooperation can bring beneficial results.

The need to protect the contemporary heritage, including the resource of the most valuable objects of architecture and urban planning, which must be necessary and delivered to generations, is unprecedented and equally important as for the heritage of distant times. For this reason, the aim of this study was to try to answer the question - why do the effects of contemporary activities lead to the disintegration of objects, the violation of their artistic and historical values and even the demolition of some of the most important icons of contemporary Polish architecture? In this context, the article undertakes an analysis and evaluation of the current legal and factual protection of contemporary cultural property in Poland, which has had the force of law since 2003 and is included in the tasks of spatial planning. The legal text of the provisions of the Act on Spatial Planning and Development of 27 March 2003 (as amended) and all implementing acts of the Act became the primary subject of the study. In order to explore the problem scientifically, at the same time - based on the case study method - analyses were made of the qualitative features and outstanding lost values of the icons of post-war modernism. The results of the analyses showed that there is a lack of effective protection measures and that the statutory provisions do not provide a sufficient framework for adjudication and terms of reference. An effective conservation policy for the resource can only be made possible by the development of a coherent system of protection, including planning, regardless of the competences of the authorities. Equally important is becoming the identification of the national cultural heritage and the creation of a database accessible to planners of planning documents, the artistic and research communities. Only the combined fulfilment of these conditions will enable and ensure the integrity of contemporary assets.

Wągrowiec is a city with medieval origins, on which the Prussians made their mark in the urban space. The invaders, on the outskirts of the existing town, created a space at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, which with its architectural grandeur was to overshadow the historic centre of the county town. In the free Poland of 1918, until the present day Kościuszko Street has played an important role in the life of the city, despite its predominantly Prussian architecture. It is there that institutions important to the inhabitants are located (town hall, district office, court or schools). In the 1960s, in the wave of construction of leisure centres in Wągrowiec, a modernist centre was built on Lake Durowskie and an amphitheatre was built in the neighbourhood of the historic buildings. In the article the author presents the history of Wągrowiec, Kościuszko Street. She discusses modernist architecture and its relationship with the surroundings, and analyses its influence on the original shape of the street. She shows the current appearance of the centre.

W artykule opisano proces estetycznej modernizacji wraz z renowacją modernistycznej willi z roku 1932 zlokalizowanej na granicy poznańskiej dzielnicy „Abisynia”, powstałej w latach 30. XX w. Metoda ta, dalej zwana katalogiem cech, została implementowana do projektu rekonstrukcji willi. Opracowany katalog i metoda badawcza wykazały zgodność propozycji projektowej (A) na poziomie 67% i 19% dla (B). Uzyskane wyniki sprawiły, że koncepcja (B) została odrzucona, natomiast koncepcja (A) udoskonalona do poziomu 86%. Podsumowanie artykułu wskazuje wyższość statystycznych metod badawczych nad tradycyjnymi metodami badania architektury historycznej.

The article describes the process of aesthetic modernization along with the renovation of the modernist villa from 1932 located on the border of the Poznan district “Abisynia” built in the 30s of the 20th century. The building was not fully completed, and its planned original form appearance remains unknown to this day. Thus, the research process is a combination of reconstruction and the research hypothesis as to the intended form of the building. In the absence of source materials, it was decided to develop an authorship research method. This method, further referred to as the characteristics catalogue, was implemented in the villa reconstruction project. The developed catalogue and test method showed the conformity of the design proposal (A) at 67% and 19% for (B). In view of the results obtained, concept (B) was rejected, while concept (A) was improved to 86%. The summary of the article indicates the superiority of statistical research methods over traditional methods of historical architecture research.

The paper concerns issues related to the preservation and restoration of public space in Gdynia city centre designed and built mainly in the 1920s and 1930s. In 2007, major part of the city centre was entered in the register of monuments as a historic complex of urban architecture. Moreover, in 2015, the area was declared a Monument of History. The renovation protection of a complex of urban architecture covers the historic buildings, but also, among others, includes the protection of public space that is an integral part of the historic complex. Therefore, the preservation of the historic shape and design of public space in the centre of Gdynia is one of the key conservation tasks and since the protection of this type of space in the relatively young historic centres that are less than 100 years old is a new issue, as viewed from the conservational perspective, it is therefore worth analyzing. The issues of protection and restoration of public space in the centre of Gdynia have been exemplified by three historic streets, built in the late 1920s, that are located within the historic complex entered in the register of monuments and that have been the subject of varying restoration investments in the few recent years. The streets differ in terms of historic conditions, renovation requirements, social expectations and investment plans and at the developmental stage of the investment all these factors lead to different assumptions and approaches, bringing, in each case, different results.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki zachowania i rewaloryzacji przestrzeni publicznych w śródmieściu miasta Gdyni, zaprojektowanym i zbudowanym w głównej mierze w latach 20. i 30. XX w.

The topic of the article is the modern movement in the sacred architecture of Wrocław between 1912–1933. Text, which is a contribution to the study of the problem of ecclesiastical architecture created in the capital of Lower Silesia in the years 1900–1933, examples are given of five structures – built and designed. They include both Catholic and Protestant buildings – the designs of the crematorium and cemetery chapel at Osobowice by Max Berg, the Catholic Church of the Holy Family by Kurt Langer, the Protestant Gustav Adolf Memorial Church designed by Albert Kempter and the outstanding, but unrealized competition project for this church by Hans Scharoun and Adolf Rading. These buildings are characterised by stylistic and functional diversity. Text provides a glimpse into the development of the modern movement in the work of Wrocław’s architects from the radically avant-garde visions of Max Berg and Oskar Kokoschka working together on the crematorium project, through the classically modernist character of the Holy Family Church built for Sępolno, to the functionalist style of the Albert Kempter’s Gustav Adolf Memorial Church and finally the ahead of its time, clearly not fitting into the categories of conservative church architecture competition design by Scharoun and Rading for the same church. Modernity, like the avant-garde, as a heterogeneous phenomenon reveals itself on many levels – from ideas to construction to functionality. An analysis of the buildings discussed based on the current state of research and an archival search including surviving designs and press materials proves that the capital of the Silesian Province not only did not remain on the fringes of the emerging avant-garde, but, with the strength of the local artistic milieu of the local artistic community, concentrated among others around the Royal Academy of Arts and Crafts, actively co-created the avant-garde, incorporating the iconic architecture created here into the framework of the extremely dynamic modern movement, which was developing rapidly at the time.

Tematem artykułu jest ruch nowoczesny w architekturze sakralnej Wrocławia w latach 1912–1933. W tekście, który stanowi przyczynek do badań nad problematyką architektury sakralnej powstałej w stolicy Dolnego Śląska w latach 1900–1933, przytoczone zostały przykłady pięciu budowli – powstałych i projektowanych. Wśród nich znalazły się zarówno budowle katolickie, jak i protestanckie – projekty krematorium i kaplica cmentarna na Osobowicach Maxa Berga, katolicki kościół św. Rodziny Kurta Langera, ewangelicki kościół Pamięci Gustawa Adolfa projektu Alberta Kemptera oraz wybitny, choć niezrealizowany projekt konkursowy dla tego kościoła autorstwa Hansa Scharouna i Adolfa Radinga. Budowle te charakteryzuje stylistyczna i funkcjonalna różnorodność.
