The subject of the research is the analysis of applications of biomimetic design within the specificity of the Polish architectural environment. The analysed examples include projects made by Polish architects (professional and students), both completed and conceptual, in the period of the last 25 years. The concept of biomimetics and biomimicry is popular in contemporary architecture; in general, both terms mean imitation (gr. mimesis) of the nature, from which the solutions are derived to solve human problems. In the architectural context, biomimetics serves a “tool-like” role by providing materials and structures modeled on the form and behavior of living organisms, whereas biomimicry refers to imitating nature at the ecosystem level, establishing an ecological standard for construction.

Industrial development and surveying projects related to oil and natural gas resources and undersea pipelines require comprehensive geological, geophysical, and oceanographic research to be conducted in offshore and coastal areas. These research activities are typically conducted by research vessels or smaller craft that are specially equipped for specific tasks, which often require considerable labour. However, this research method incurs high operating costs and poses risks to occupational safety and property, particularly due to the harsh weather conditions at sea. In addition, highprecision measurements cannot always be effectively taken using these vessels at the sea surface during such projects. Consequently, research institutions and organisations have made significant advancements in developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) over the past two decades. The aim of this study was to identify an optimal design form for AUVs to enable them to examine the geomorphological, geological, and geophysical structures of the seafloor while also supporting oceanographic research. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics analyses were conducted on the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Suboff submarine model, and the results were validated using experimental data obtained from the literature [1]. After successfully confirming the accuracy of the simulations, which were executed using the commercial software STAR CCM+ (Simulation of Turbulent Flow in Arbitrary Regions - Computational Continuum Mechanics, C++ based), various AUV designs were created based on commonly used geometric shapes for torpedoes. In addition, biomimicry principles were employed to develop AUV models with minimal viscous resistance and energy consumption during underwater operations. The following models, all with the same displacement, were systematically analysed: a mature goose-beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris), a mature sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), an adapted form of the submarine shark (Carcharodon carcharias, also known as the great white shark), four biomimicry-inspired hybrid models and four torpedo-shaped AUVs. The findings from these analyses are discussed in detail.

This study critically examines the integration of biophilic design and biomimicry as complementary, nature-inspired strategies to promote sustainability and human well-being in interior architecture. While biophilic design aims to re-establish the emotional and psychological connection between humans and nature through direct and indirect natural elements, biomimicry focuses on imitating the functional intelligence of nature to develop energy-efficient, adaptable, and ecologically responsible solutions. Despite frequent conceptual overlaps in the literature, this research isolates their unique principles and explores their synergistic potential in the context of interiors. Using bibliometric analysis tools such as Web of Science, Scopus, VOSviewer, and R Studio Bibliometrix-Biblioshiny, the study maps publication trends, thematic networks, and underexplored research areas. While the findings reveal a growing academic interest in these concepts, they also highlight a significant gap between theoretical discourse and real-world application. The study advocates evidence-based integration of biophilic and biomimetic principles, supported by interdisciplinary collaboration and empirical case studies. Ultimately, the research offers actionable insights for academics and design professionals aiming to create indoor environments that balance user-centred well-being with environmental responsibility.

This study is focused on the problematic idea of implementing the concepts of biomimetics and biomimicry in architecture. Both terms refer to the imitation of nature in order to find solutions for problems arising in various scientific disciplines and human activity. Currently, biomimetics most often means the scientific translation of nature’s forms, functions, and processes for the purposes of technological innovation, and biomimicry postulates mimicking nature at the ecosystem level, introducing sustainability. This paper aims to answer the question whether biomimetic architecture can still be perceived as a visual art. The ideas of biomimetics are confronted with the traditional (historical) perception of architecture in four aspects: a building’s form, material, the creative process, and purpose. According to the concepts of biomimetics and biomimicry, a building’s form is completely dependent on its function, and should not be shaped by the architect, but ‘found’ through optimization. Architecture’s goal is primarily ecological and social. Therefore, the implementation of all radical biomimetic principles causes the rejection of the expressive, aesthetic, and symbolic values of architecture. It also ends up with the denial of the architect’s creative act of design, replaced by an evolutionary ‘form-finding’ process. Consequently, architecture might lose a part of its identity as a domain of art. However, if we want architecture to remain an artistic discipline, inspiration with nature cannot lead to a complete rejection of attention to form and all non-functional objectives.

The aim of the study is to present how biomimetics and biomimicry manifest themselves in the architectural practice on two basic levels: as a tool and ideology. Biomimetics can be perceived as an architectural tool. It takes inspiration from the details of form, structure, and behaviour of living organisms, producing architectural elements of specific functionalities. Biomimicry is a contemporary architecture’s ideology. It means the imitation of biological rules and processes at the ecosystem level. Here, nature provides inspiration at the macro level, the idea of biomimicry is of a synthetic character, based on a holistic view and general laws and principles. The final products are buildings, perceived in a holistic way, and urban complexes. The idea of biomimicry can be implemented either using advanced high-tech solutions (biomimetic tools), or with a low-tech approach, taking inspiration from vernacular architecture or animals’ habitats.

Na poziomie ideologicznym biomimikra to naśladownictwo praw i procesów biologicznych, inspiracja naturą w skali makro, czyli dążenie do odwzorowania w budynku reguł i sposobu funkcjonowania ekosystemów.

The paper describes an innovative design of a bionic robot for applications in felinotherapy supporting hospital and home psychotherapeutic treatment of bedridden children and adults. The project was engineered by biomimicrating a biological cat, reaching its robotic model. Particular attention in this process was devoted to capturing the essence of feline motorics behavior and the possibility of mapping them in a mechatronic model. The geometry, kinematics and kinetics of this model were analyzed, creating assumptions for its practical implementation in the real mechanism of cat skeleton movement. The used software used the topology of elements in Autodesk Fusion 360 Simulation workspace by performing the critical elements of the mechatronic model in print using SLS technology. The work was also supported by a graphical simulation in the PyBullet environment.

Nature is a perfectly functioning system. Biomimetics (biomimicry) is based on analysis and transposition of processes occurring in nature to the level of technology. Architecture is a search of forms which are complementary to functional and structural solutions. There is a noticeable play with geometry, a play of shapes, and space for multiplication between these processes.

Architektura to poszukiwanie form będących dopełnieniem rozwiązań funkcjonalnych i konstrukcyjnych.
