As the world is becoming more connected, sustainability is becoming very important in modern communication technologies. This paper explores the role of cutting-edge antenna and communication technologies that will be part of a sustainable next generation wireless communications (6G). We begin by discussing the role of antenna systems —like reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), millimeter wave (mmWave)/THz antennas, and massive MIMO— in improving spectral and energy efficiency. Then, we highlight green base stations, and solar-powered deployments and their contribution in energy savings. This is followed by evaluating antennas within smart environments where emerging technologies are discussed. Also, we present a case study that exploit simulation to compare RIS-assisted systems to the traditional NLOS communications. Finally, we address existing challenges and future research directions.

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has exposed fundamental limitations of existing 4G and 5G communication infrastructures. Despite improvements in throughput and network virtualization, current systems are unable to guarantee deterministic latency, ultra-high reliability, and massive scalability required by next-generation machine communication, particularly in industrial environments. These constraints limit the implementation of real-time control systems, autonomous production processes, and large-scale sensor networks. Sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks are emerging as a potential solution to these structural limitations. By integrating sub-THz communication, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), AI-native network management, edge computing, and blockchain-based security mechanisms, 6G aims to enable deterministic, intelligent, and highly adaptive machinetype communication. This study examines how 6G can overcome the technological barriers of previous generations and support both Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) and massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC) within unified IoT and IIoT ecosystems. It further identifies key architectural transformations and implementation challenges that must be addressed to realize scalable, secure, and energy-efficient industrial communication infrastructures. The findings suggest that 6G represents not merely an incremental upgrade of mobile networks, but a paradigm shift toward AI-driven, distributed, and self-optimizing communication systems capable of supporting IoT 2.0 and future cyber-physical environments.

This paper discusses the use of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) in wireless systems as a tool to improve signal quality by shaping wave propagation. A system model incorporating an RIS, transmitter and receiver in a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) environment, and how to calculate reflection coefficients to maximise received power is presented. A method for creating a constrained, while maintaining efficiency, codebook was proposed. Experimental tests were carried out, showing an increase in signal power and channel bit rate using RIS with a limited codebook.

In the forthcoming 6G wireless communication networks, it is crucial to address the challenges of massive information capacity and ultra-high data transmission rate. Terahertz (THz) band communication emerges as a promising candidate to meet these demands. However, the natural physical characteristics of THz signals, including significant attenuation in transmission and limited diffraction capabilities, pose substantial limitations on their practical applications. In recent years, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional potential in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves. RIS is anticipated to mitigate the challenges associated with THz communication. In this research, we introduce a RIS design featuring 1-bit phase modulation operating within THz bands. The RIS units leverage PIN diodes to dynamically adjust the unit structure, enabling dynamic encoding of the RIS metasurface based on the on and off states of diodes. In this paper, three typical application scenarios, including beam scanning, beam convolution, and radar cross section (RCS) reduction, are listed. Coding methodologies including fractional coding, convolution, Golay-Rudin-Shapiro (GRS) coding, and Genetic Algorithm (GA) coding, are deployed, and simulation results illustrate the effectiveness. This study lays the groundwork for the practical deployment and coding strategies of RIS in the THz bands, thereby facilitating the integration of THz technology into the next generation of 6G communication systems.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, due to the possibility of their fast deployment, are considered an essential element of the future wireless 6G communication systems. However, an essential enabler for their use as access points is to provide a sufficient throughput wireless backhaul link. Thus, in this paper we consider the aspect of extension of network coverage with the use of drone-based relaying and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for backhauling. Presented results of simulation experiments indicate that the use of RIS allows for significant improvement of network coverage without the need to use additional relays.

Drones are considered to be an important part of future 6G telecommunication systems. Thanks to their quick deployment potential, they provide additional connectivity options in the form of a flying hotspot. However, in such use cases, they typically require a wireless backhaul link to facilitate their proper operation, which might be a challenging task in dense urban environments. One of the potential methods that may be relied upon to connect such nodes is the integrated access and backhaul (IAB) approach, where part of the spectrum allocated to users accessing the base station is used for wireless backhauling. Thus, in this work, we consider the problem of establishing a multi-hop wireless backhaul link following the IAB concept, with the aid of drone relay stations (DRSs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We formulate the problem of coverage improvement with a fixed number of relays, assuming certain throughput requirements for the backhaul link. The simulations show that the use of RISs offers a coverage improvement in such a scenario or a reduction in the number of nodes involved in ensuring the required backhaul performance.

Radio propagation in the millimeter wave and sub-terahertz domain is heavily affected by shadowing conditions. The communication link is blocked without any additional technical means being used. Coverage improvements can be provided by using reflectors, RIS arrays, and repeaters to direct radio waves around corners or obstacles. These concepts show different performance and complexity levels affecting their network deployment. This paper investigates the achievable radio range or the received power to compare specific deployment concepts under realistic propagation conditions. Overall, the repeater solution provides either the largest radio range or the lowest necessary total transmit power compared to reflectors or RIS arrays and, thereby, is the most sustainable approach. A RIS array requires an additional centralized signal processing capacity for calculating optimized RIS settings and results in the highest level of network deployment complexity.

Inland shipping is one of the most neglected transport modes in Eastern Europe. Despite its indisputable advantages, such as the ability to transport goods of high weight and volume at the lowest unit transportation cost, low environmental impact and thus the lowest external costs, inland shipping does not play a significant role as a transport branch in many countries of the European Union. This is primarily due to the poor condition of the waterway infrastructure, the maintenance of which has not been properly financed for decades. In the public’s opinion, IWT is often considered an outdated form of transportation that does not meet the current needs of the transportation market. This article aims to indicate that the RIS system is an important tool for managing inland waterways and inland shipping. Therefore, it is also an important innovation which can redefine the role of IWT in the transport system. RIS can contribute to improving the logistic systems and transport safety. The literature analysis, descriptive statistics and taxonomic analysis were carried out to present the importance of the RIS system and its innovativeness. The study contributes to the discussion on the impact of modern information services and IT-tools on inland shipping and its role in modern transport systems. Inland waterborne transport is the missing mode, which could supplement the infrastructure deficits, and with the use of the RIS system, interconnect inland shipping into the transportation chains.

RIS is an instrument for the organisation and management of inland waterway transport. It is a service package in a broad meaning which makes use of modern technology in order to optimise traffic and transport flows. This system allows to increase the navigation safety and effectiveness by providing up-to-date information both to skippers – who based on it can make decisions concerning cruise parameters (e.g. velocity) – and to ship owners who can plan the use of their fleet more effectively. RIS also enhances the flow of information between the managers/supervisors of the waterway and its users, allowing for better enforcement of the law or gathering statistical data. It facilitates calculating port charges and charges for the use of waterways. The aim of this article is to discuss the process of RIS implementation in Poland and to present how it may be developed.

Stainless steel (SS) is a well-known material for the internal parts of nuclear power plants. It is known that these alloys exhibit radiation-induced segregation (RIS) at point defect sinks at moderate temperature, while in service. The RIS behavior of SS can be a potential problem by increasing the susceptibility to irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking. In this work, the RIS behavior of solute atoms at sinks in SS 316 irradiated with Fe4+ ions were characterized by atom probe tomography (APT). There were torus-shaped defects along with a depletion of Cr and enrichment of Ni and Si. These clusters are believed to be dislocation loops resulting from irradiation. The segregation of solutes was also observed for various defect shapes. These observations are consistent with other APT results from the literature. The composition of the clusters was analyzed quantitatively almost at the atomic scale. Despite the limitations of the experiments, the APT analysis was well suited for discovering the structure of irradiation defects and performing a quantitative analysis of RIS in irradiated specimens.

Observational sensors, such as CCTV cameras and radars, are part of the RIS system. These sensors should provide information about the current situation on the waterway and to a greater extent – aquatory. Barriers for the observational sensor, in the sense of reducing the view field, are various objects in the aquatory. This is one of the main factors that make it difficult to determine the proper location of the sensor. Currently, in order to increase the efficiency of determining the locations of the observational sensors are used different tools for performing spatial analysis. This applies to both the initial geographical identification as well as detailed analysis. Analysis efficiency, in turn, depends on the model of the environment, represented in the form of the Digital Surface Model. Given the complexity of some geographic features, it should be used the appropriate methodology for the visibility analysis, as well as the preparation of the input material. The following work includes the theme of visibility analysis on inland waters, with special emphasis on the complex objects. They include bridges, cranes, buildings, high vegetation and other engineering structures.
