The adoption of a cleaner production approach to environmental protection has generated the need to identify obstacles affecting the absorption of clean technologies by enterprises with different strategic environmental types in Poland. This research analysis focuses on a sample of industrial firms representing the following industries: food, fuel and energy and chemical. Findings indicate that there are statistical differences between the types of environmental strategies related to the influence of financial and legal obstacles to the absorption of clean technologies. The study also shows that the influence of obstacles on proactive environmental strategies was found to be smaller than on strategies with a lower level of adaptation

EN
Efforts were made to demonstrate that in biorefineries it is possible to manufacture all the commodities required for maintaining human civilisation on the current level. Biorefineries are based on processing biomass resulting from photosynthesis. From sugars, oils and proteins, a variety of food, feed, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, polymers, chemicals and fuels can further be produced. Production in biorefineries must be based on a few rules to fulfil sustainable development: all raw materials are derived from biomass, all products are biodegradable and production methods are in accordance with the principles of Green Chemistry and Clean Technology. The paper presents a summary of state-of-the-art concerning biorefineries, production methods and product range of leading companies in the world that are already implemented. Potential risks caused by the development of biorefineries, such as: insecurities of food and feed production, uncontrolled changes in global production profiles, monocultures, eutrophication, etc., were also highlighted in this paper. It was stressed that the sustainable development is not only an alternative point of view but is our condition to survive.

Polska posiada znaczące zasoby węgla kamiennego i brunatnego. Zatem, chociaż przewiduje się obniżenie udziału węgla w strukturze pierwotnych nośników energii w przyszłości, to wciąż pozostanie on surowcem strategicznym, którego zasoby należy chronić i wykorzystywać racjonalnie. W artykule omówiono również perspektywy wykorzystania węgla w przyszłości wskazując na główne kierunki rozwoju czystych technologii węglowych.

Poland is in possession of considerable resources of hard and brown coal and it is also reckoned as one of the main producers of these energy raw materials. As the resources are really big, coal has a dominant position in the Polish power sector. But the EU care for climate protection and the resulting from it its restrictive policy in the field of CO2 emission puts barriers for traditional application of coal as a fuel in power plants. So, the progress in clean coal technologies becomes a key element that forejudges the role of the Polish coal not only in the Polish economy but also in the economy of the whole European Union. Governmental document defining the Polish energy policy in the time perspective of the year 2030 treats Polish coal as a stabilizing element of the national energy security, diminishing the Polish economy dependence on imported gas and oil. Therefore, though the reduction of coal share in the structure of primary energy carriers is more than possible in future, it still remains a strategic raw material which resources must be protected and exploited in a rational way. Discussed are also perspectives of coal application in future, indicating the main development directions of clean coal technologies.

Poland has significant reserves of hard coal and brown coal. Poland is also the significant producer of these energy raw materials. Because of big reserves possession coal has the predominant position in the Polish electric energy sector. European Union concern with climate protection and resulting from it restriction policy in coal dioxide emission, creates barriers for the traditional coal use as the fuel in the power plants. Progress in the range of clean coal technologies becomes a key issue, which will determine the role of Polish coal not only in economy of Poland but of European Union as well. The government document determining the energy policy of Poland in the prospect up to the year 2030 treats Polish coal as a stabilizer of country energy safety, reducing dependence of Polish economy on imported natural gas and crude oil. Therefore, although reduction of coal participation in the structure of primary energy carriers in the future is foreseen, still it will be the strategic raw material, and its reserves should be protected and rationally used. The prospects of using coal in the future are discussed pointing out the main directions of development of the clean coal technologies.

Membrane processes are considered as potential methods useful in clean technologies that minimize the use of raw materials, rationalize energy consumption and reduce waste production. They are capable to solve many environmental problems, among them problems related to nuclear technology field. Membrane processes have been already applied for liquid radioactive waste processing in many nuclear centres around the world. Reverse osmosis (RO) was implemented at the Institute of Atomic Energy (IAE) at Świerk for liquid low-level radioactive waste concentration. A 3-stage RO plant supplements the existing waste processing system based on an evaporator giving the possibility of initial concentration of liquid waste or final polishing of the condensate after evaporation. Intensive studies on ultrafiltration (UF) enhanced by sorption on inorganic sorbents or complexation with chelating polymers were carried out. Ceramic membranes made of alumina, titania and zirconia were used in the experiments. Such membranes show a high chemical, temperature and radiation resistance. Thermal process, namely membrane distillation with the use of resistant porous membranes from PTFE was proposed and tested for radioactive waste concentration. The results collected in laboratory and pilot plant experiments allowed to consider the process usable for small installations operated with utilization of cheap energy sources or waste heat. Other methods like liquid membranes and electric processes with ion-exchange membranes as possible applications in nuclear industry are under development. Membrane methods were considered as alternative solutions for reclamation of different materials that can be recycled and reused. Some of them allow minimizing the total energy consumption by various energy recovery systems and utilization of cheap energy sources.
