Remobilization of heavy metals from the bottom liner system due to the seepage of acid mine drainage (AMD) is an important concern in the long-term management of tailing impoundment. Titration tests were carried out to evaluate the acid buffering capacity (ABC) of sewage sludge and to investigate its effect on the remobilization of heavy metals. Test results demonstrate that the ABC increases with solid/liquid ratio and anaerobic incubation time and it is mainly attributed to the abundant organic matters contained and increasing carbonate loads. The added heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cu) were well immobilized during the anaerobic incubation stage but were released out dramatically during the acidification especially when pH drops below 6.0 because of dissolution of carbonates and cation exchange of clay minerals. The calculated results, from a simplified model, indicate that high levels of remobilization of heavy metals are not expected during the typical management time because of the high ABC of compacted sewage sludge barrier. These results support that sewage sludge is a suitable bottom liner material for the management of AMD from tailings.

Zinc acetate was used as a starting material to prepare Zn-solutions from solvents and ligands with different boiling temperature. The ZnO thin films were prepared on Si(1 0 0) substrates by spin-coating method. The effect of baking temperature and boiling temperature of the solvents and ligands on their morphologies and orientation was investigated. The solvents and ligands with high boiling temperature were favorable for relaxation of mechanical stress to form the smooth ZnO thin films. As the solvents and ligands with low boiling temperature were used to prepare Zn-solutions, the prepared ZnO thin films showed (0 0 2) preferred orientation. As n-propanol, 2-methoxyethanol, 2-(methylamino)ethanol and monoethanolamine were used to prepare Zn-solutions, highly (0 0 2)-oriented ZnO thin films were formed by adjusting the baking temperature.

Simulation of natural water in river flow is a key issue in implementation of Digital Basin. This paper presents a method of water flow visualization which can adapt for the channel of the river based on the velocity field. Aiming at simulating large area river flow, first, Level of details(Lods) are constructed for river velocity fields according to the spatial relationship between view point and the targets. Second, it calculates the velocity fields of steady water flow in real-time using a novel quick Poisson-disk boundary sampling method, and then, Simplified velocity fields are adopted for driving and restrict the sprite textures so as to make them meet Poisson-disk distribution along the river channel. Finally, it blends and render sprite textures and gets real water flow effects. This method uses GLSL(OpenGL Shading Language)shaders to render the dynamic water flow, the shaders use GPU programmable rendering pipeline for graphics calculations, it reduces the real-time computation time of CPU and improves the overall efficiency of the algorithm. An experiment is carried out over Three Gorges Reservoir basin, it suggests that the method achieved a promising results, and the proposed method can be effectively used in simulation of large scale dynamic flowing water.

W artykule przedstawiono metodę wizualizacji przepływu wody w korycie rzecznym, biorący pod uwagę rozkład prędkości wody na dużym obszarze. W pierwszym kroku określony został stopień ilości detali w badanym obszarze, następnie szczegółowo obliczono pola określonych prędkości w oparciu o rozkład Poisson’a, po czym zaadaptowano uproszczone pola prędkości do opisu tzw. sprite’ów. Finalnie, na podstawie wspomnianych analiz otrzymano rzeczywisty obraz przepływu cieczy. Przeprowadzono badania weryfikacyjne proponowanej metody symulacji przepływu.

We examined optimal cyclic uniaxial stretches for stem cell-to-tenocyte differentiation by applying a wide range of cyclic mechanical stimuli. Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were subjected to three types of cyclic elongation of 5%, 10%, or 15% at a cyclic frequency of 1 Hz for 24 h or 48 h, and differentiation into tenocytes was assessed by two methods: real-time polymerase chain reaction determination of gene expression levels and western blotting analysis of protein expression levels. The gene expression levels of the differentiation markers type I collagen (Col I), type III collagen (Col III), tenascin-C (Tnc), and scleraxis (Scx), all of which are constituents of tendon tissue, were increased when cells were exposed to 10% stretching stimulation. The levels of Col I and Tnc protein synthesis levels were also higher in the cells with 10% stretching stimulation than in those subjected to other stimuli. The results indicated that 10% stretching stimulus was efficient to induce the differentiation of hBMSCs into tenocytes. In addition, the changes in gene and protein expression levels were strongly correlated with cell orientation angle. The results presented here suggest that mesenchymal stem cell-to-tenocyte differentiation is strongly associated with cumulative elongation load on the cells. This work provides novel insights into the differentiation of tenogenesis in a strain-induced environment and supports the therapeutic potential of hBMSCs.
