Price of electricity in a wholesale market is generally a result of the interplay between supply and demand for electricity. With the ongoing energy transformation of the economy, both electricity demand and its availability are increasingly dependent on weather conditions. This paper attempts to assess how forecast errors in renewable energy generation and demand impact price relationships between individual types of wholesale electricity markets.

Energy storage is an increasingly vital aspect of the energy sector in Poland due to the growing prevalence of renewable energy sources. Its primary goal is to support the uptake of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix. The article presented here analyzes the economic potential of buying and selling electricity on the Intra-Day Market and the Day-Ahead Market of Towarowa Giełda Energii SA (Polish Energy Market: TGE) in terms of energy storage. In four scenarios, energy was either bought and sold on the DAM/IDM or bought on one market and sold on the other to identify the most favorable case. Two four-month periods in 2021 and 2023 were examined. An analysis was carried out on a lithium-ion storage facility that has a two-hour charging cycle for energy storage. A methodology was proposed to identify the two highest and two lowest energy prices for imposing constraints on the purchase and sale times. The time of day when these prices occurred was also analyzed. The annual and periodic profits that can be obtained by purchasing and selling stored energy were calculated. The calculations and analyses facilitated inter-market comparison. Energy storage payback time was computed, and investment profitability was examined. The final section presents conclusions, opportunities, and suggestions for further research in this area.

W prezentowanym artykule dokonano analizy potencjału ekonomicznego zakupu i sprzedaży energii elektrycznej na Rynku Dnia Bieżącego i Rynku Dnia Następnego Towarowej Giełdy Energii SA (Polski Rynek Energii: TGE) w zakresie magazynowania energii. Badano dwa czteromiesięczne okresy w latach 2021 i 2023. Przeprowadzono analizę magazynu litowo-jonowego, który posiada dwugodzinny cykl ładowania w celu magazynowania energii. Zaproponowano metodologię identyfikacji dwóch najwyższych i dwóch najniższych cen energii w celu nałożenia ograniczeń na czas zakupu i sprzedaży. Analizie poddano także porę dnia, w której te ceny występowały. Obliczono roczne i okresowe zyski, które można uzyskać z zakupu i sprzedaży zmagazynowanej energii. Przeprowadzone obliczenia i analizy umożliwiły porównania międzyrynkowe.

This literature review delves into the intricate realm of pricing rules in the day-ahead electricity market, spurred by a notable surge in 2022 electricity prices. Employing a comparative analysis of uniform pricing (UP), discriminatory pricing (DP), and the Vickrey–Clarke–Groves (VCG) pricing rule, the study navigates the complexities of these mechanisms. The evaluation unveils contrasting perspectives: the political push for consumer-friendly low prices versus the efficiency aspiration for a self-regulating market. DP, minimizing average prices but increasing volatility, and VCG, excelling in productive efficiency, are pitted against UP, the prevailing yet imperfect norm. The findings underscore the nuances of each rule"," DP leads to reduced average prices and heightened volatility, while VCG ensures superior productive efficiency. Despite UP’s simplicity, it prompts inefficiencies and political costs. These insights illuminate the pivotal choice faced by policymakers, balancing efficiency, fairness, and market sustainability.

The paper presents a statistical analysis of prices and volumes of electricity quoted on the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and the Intra-Day Market (IDM) of the Polish Power Exchange (POLPX). The analysis was carried out for weighted average hourly prices and volumes of electricity for two selected periods. Data available from the Polish Power Exchange was used. In the face of the energy crisis and the uncertainty caused by war and the limited supply of raw materials used to produce electricity, knowledge of the operation of the DAM and IDM is of significant economic, strategic importance, which is related to the security of electricity supply and its prices. The exchange market in Poland is supervised by the Energy Regulatory Office and the Financial Supervision Commission. During the energy crisis, the role of energy exchanges is increasing, not only in Poland, and knowledge of the functioning of the energy market is also one of the elements of strategic management in the energy sector. The Statistica v.13.3 software was used to analyse the data.

W artykule zaprezentowano analizę statystyczną cen i wolumenu energii elektrycznej notowanych na Rynku Dnia Następnego (RDN) i Rynku Dnia Bieżącego (RDB) Towarowej Giełdy Energii (TGE). Do analizy danych wykorzystano program Statistica v.13.3.

The paper shows that it is possible to correct the identification model of the Day-Ahead Market system by employing the Perceptron Artificial Neural Network. First, a simulation model of the DAM system at the POLPX has been built, and then it has been shown how the model can be corrected so that the weighted average electricity prices obtained are close enough to the exchange-quoted ones. Next, simulation, comparative and sensitivity studies of the model were carried out for forecast data for four characteristic hours: 6, 12, 18, and 24 of the following year. Many interesting research results were obtained, including a result of sensitivity testing it was shown that the obtained models can be used in forecasting studies.

The article is an attempt of the methodological approach to the proposed quantum-inspired method of neural modeling of prices quoted on the Day-Ahead Market operating at TGE S.A. In the proposed quantum-inspired neural model it was assumed, inter alia, that it is composed of 12 parallel Perceptron ANNs with one hidden layer. Moreover, it was assumed that weights and biases as processing elements are described by density matrices, and the values flowing through the Artificial Neural Network of Signals are represented by qubits. Calculations checking the correctness of the adopted method and model were carried out with the use of linear algebra and vector-matrix calculus in MATLAB and Simulink environments. The obtained research results were compared to the results obtained from the neural model with the use of a comparative model.

The paper presents selected elements of a modelling methodology involving quantization, quantum calculations and dequantization on the example of the neural model of the Day-Ahead Market of the Polish Electricity Exchange. Based on the fundamental assumptions of quantum computing, a new method has been proposed here of converting the real numbers in decimal notation into quantum mixed numbers using the probability modules of quantum mixed number and the principle of superposition, along with a new method of quantum calculations using linear algebra and vectormatrix calculus, and the Artificial Neural Network was taught accordingly. Dequantization of quantum mixed numbers to real numbers in decimal notation using the new method of dequantization has been proposed as well. The operation of the methods introduced was shown on numerical examples.

The goal of this article is to better understand electricity market price formation processes in Poland through an analysis of the features (volatility and spikes) of Polish day-ahead electricity market prices. The following indicators have been calculated to determine electricity market price volatility: the oscillation coefficient; the coefficient of variation; the standard deviation indicator; the daily velocity indicator, which is based on the overall average price; and the daily velocity indicator, which is based on daily average price. Critical values for electricity market price have been calculated to evaluate price spikes. This analysis reveals that Polish electricity market price volatility is moderate. Electricity price spikes have been an observable phenomenon in Polish day-ahead electricity markets, encompassing 3.15% of the time period analysed in Poland.
