W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję systemu do wykrywania wtrąceń, czyli wad występujących w postaci lokalnych przebarwień na powierzchniach elementów z tworzywa sztucznego produkowanych metodą wtrysku wysokociśnieniowego.

The article presents the concept of a system for the detection of inclusions, which are defects appearing as local discolorations on the surface of plastic components manufactured using high-pressure injection molding. This system is a part of a broader optical quality control system for polymer components, which also includes geometric inspection. Inclusions can be effectively detected as areas of non-uniform brightness. However, as the first step the object edges must be excluded from the analyzed image. The edge image is determined based on CAD models of the manufactured components, and the proposed reference pair method ensures precise alignment of the edge mask with the image of the inspected product. The algorithm was implemented in the prototype of a modular quality control system. After appropriate parameter tuning, all inclusions in the test dataset were successfully detected, with the false alarm rate maintained at a level acceptable for industrial applications.

The aim of this article was to investigate the potential of reverse engineering for developing digital 3D models based on real, worn mechanical components, particularly in cases where original manufacturer documentation is unavailable. The main research question concerned the effectiveness and accuracy of reproducing the geometry of a physical object using various 3D scanning technologies and CAD design tools. The subject of the study was a hydraulic cylinder ball – a worn, deformed component that could no longer be sourced on the market. Two types of 3D scanners were used in the study: a handheld device and a stationary system. Measurement data obtained from each scanner was processed in the VXelements software and then used to create precise models in the SolidWorks environment. Conventional measurements were also conducted and served as a reference point. Comparative analysis showed a high degree of consistency between the methods, with dimensional differences not exceeding 0.4 mm and 2°. The results confirm that reverse engineering, supported by 3D scanning and CAD design, is an effective solution for the individual reconstruction of technical components. The significance of the findings directly relates to industrial practice – particularly in the context of rapid prototyping, spare part reproduction, and maintenance support. The developed methodology can support the digitization and automation of engineering processes, particularly in the context of documentation management and preparation of manufacturing data. In this study, the geometry of a worn component was reproduced without attempting to reconstruct its original shape. The resulting CAD model reflects the current state of wear.

Content available Mass and Volume Wear Rates of Conical Picks
EN
Mechanical mining is extensively employed in the mining and construction industries. Conical picks are essential cutting tools that experience wear during operation, necessitating their timely replacement. Prolonging the service life of these picks can significantly enhance mining efficiency and provide economic benefits. This article examines the wear of conical picks used in mining machines and explores quantitative methods for assessing their wear rates. We have compared two different types of assessment: the mass and volume methods. Laboratory tests were conducted under controlled conditions to measure the wear of the picks, utilising a laboratory scale, 3D scanning, and Archimedes’ principle. The accuracy of these methods was evaluated by calculating both the wear indicators’ maximum and mean squared errors. The findings reveal that both methods produce similar results under standard conditions although there are differences in accuracy. 3D scanning, while slightly less precise than the Archimedes method, offers the significant advantage of generating a 3D file depicting the tool’s wear profile. In contrast, the Archimedes method is characterised by a higher repeatability and accuracy. The decision to employ mass or volume-based indicators should depend on the objectives of the test: volume measurements are recommended to compare structurally different picks, while mass measurements are adequate for picks of the same type. In summary, both methods demonstrate high accuracy and can be effectively applied in engineering practices.

The Posidonia Shale Formation is one of the best-known examples of fossil Konservat-Lagerstätten in the world. One of the most characteristic taxa from this formation is the genus Stenopterygius, a medium-sized thunnosaurian ichthyosaur represented by numerous specimens which are very often articulated, featuring specimens exhibiting life activities such as live-birth or with preserved soft tissues. Herein, we describe an extremely well-preserved skeleton of Stenopterygius quadriscissus CEP-DG-7264-N, housed at the Nature Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University (NEC Kraków, Poland) and its remarkable story, which ultimately led this fossil to become the centrepiece of the NEC collection. The specimen, based on analysis of observed taphonomic distortions, is inferred to have landed post-mortem rostrum first onto the seafloor, causing a snout fracture and spine distortion. Associated belemnites (preserved as rostra) have been interpreted as possible gastrointestinal content, which has probably been displaced around the individual due to the expanding volume of gas buildup.

The article concisely describes UBM technology (Ultimate Building Machine), that can be used as a solution for buildings and roof structures. The structure of this technology is made of double corrugated thin-walled steel profiles manufactured on the construction site by a self-contained UBM manufacturing factory on wheels. These panels serve as both the building envelope and the structural system. The specificity of the construction poses many design problems, especially the determination of the strength parameters and stiffness of the double-corrugated panels from which the structure is made. The article presents the results of spatial scanning tests of double-corrugated steel sheets, which were carried out using commonly available 3D scanning devices: Leica 3D Disto and MagiScan app. Additionally, results of numerical analyses performed on scanned samples and a comparison of these results with preliminary laboratory tests are presented in the article. The purpose of scanning was to obtain an accurate and real geometry of the UBM panels, to implement it into numerical software, and then to perform numerical analyses. Commonly available 3D scanning devices were used because using advanced 3D scanners is not popular nowadays for economic reasons, and hand-built geometric models pose a lot of problems and are not accurate enough. The obtained results are promising and form the basis for further research.

This article presents the results of research conducted as part of the project titled "Improvement of access to culture and activation of disabled and socially excluded persons" Gospostrateg-VI/0022/2021 co-financed by the National Centre for Research and Development. The aim of the research was to compare three widely used digitalization technologies: photogrammetry, structured light 3D scanning, and computer tomography. The comparison was conducted in terms of the quality and accuracy of reproducing the geometry of scanned objects, the complexity of the measurement process, its duration, and costs. One of the research assumptions was that during scanning, no interference with the surface of the scanned object was allowed (e.g., using matting sprays or applied markers), which simulated conditions such as scanning museum exhibits. The selected objects for the research had various challenging characteristics for scanning, such as highly glossy, matte, porous, or blurry surfaces, and were made of different materials such as metal, wood, or plastics. The article briefly discusses the operation of each tested technology, the methods and steps taken to obtain the final 3D models, and presents their comparison. The research showed that highly glossy surfaces posed the greatest challenge for photogrammetry and structured light scanning, while high density and thickness of the object negatively affected the quality of results obtained using computer tomography. The most accurate reproduction of geometry was provided by the most expensive computer tomography, while the least accurate was the cheapest technology, photogrammetry. Both methods require lot of time, knowledge and skills from the operator to achieve best results . Often, the structured light scanner proved to be the best solution, combining simple and fast operation with very satisfactory results in terms of accuracy and detail in reproducing the real object.
