W artykule przedstawiono analizę wpływu regeneracji dolnego źródła ciepła na efektywność działania systemu z gruntową pompą ciepła (GPC) w budynku mieszkalnym we Wrocławiu.

This paper presents an analysis of the impact of ground heat regeneration on the efficiency of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system in a residential building located in Wrocław, Poland. Based on a dynamic energy model developed in TAS EDSL [1] and a borehole heat exchanger simulation using Earth Energy Designer [2], two system variants were compared: one with passive cooling (free-cooling) and other without passive cooling. The results show that regeneration of ground heat exchanger during the summer allows for higher brine inlet temperature, stabilized heat pump operation, and improved seasonal performance factor (SCOPon). Passive cooling also enhances indoor thermal comfort at a relatively low energy cost. The study confirms the importance of designing GSHP systems with integrated summer regeneration as a means to improve long-term energy efficiency and environmental performance.
Geothermal ventilation is used for preheating outdoor air in the cold season and pre-cooling it in the warm season using a mechanical ventilation system. It allows the building to save on traditional fuels when preheating or cooling outdoor supplied air by using low-potential soil heat. Air and soil exchange heat through the walls of the ground heat exchanger. Ground heat exchangers for geothermal ventilation can be installed in the ground according to a ring scheme, a Tichelmann scheme, or with a coil scheme. This article focuses on the geothermal ventilation system of a residential building using two methods of installing ground heat exchangers. The thermal energy performance of ground heat exchangers when laid in a coil format and in the Tichelmann scheme was compared. The operation of the variants was simulated using REHAU-GAHE software. As the calculation results showed, the thermal energy performance of the system for the two types of installation is approximately the same, since the program is set to maintain the minimum temperature at the outlet of the ground heat exchanger. For example, the amount of heat received per year for a ground heat exchanger installed in a coil format is 7310.22 kWh/year, and for a ground heat exchanger installed according to the Tichelmann scheme - 7430.35 kWh/year. As for the geometric dimensions, the results obtained are significantly different. Thus, for an installation depth of 2.5 m when installed in a coil format, the pipeline diameter was 500 mm and the length was 168 m, and when installed according to the Tichelmann scheme - the diameter was 250 mm and the length was 403 m.
The article presents the results of analytical studies of air losses of vertical ground heat exchangers for two proposed schemes (concentric and U-shaped). The distribution of the temperature field during the summer and winter periods was obtained through numerical simulation of the air heating process in concentric and U-shaped vertical ground heat exchangers using the Simcenter Star-CCM+ software package.

A properly designed and assembled HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system in an educational building is crucial for ensuring thermal comfort, improving indoor air quality, and positively impacting health and learning efficiency. Utilising renewable energy sources, such as a ground source heat pump, contributes to energy savings, reducing operating costs and CO2 emissions. However, a faulty installation can lead to incorrect operation, necessitating a comprehensive HVAC system modernisation for proper functioning. The paper presents examples of design and operational errors in such installations, based on the actual HVAC system with a ground source heat pump and a vertical ground heat exchanger in the building of the Primary School in Ożarowice, Poland. The building inventory and analysis of the existing HVAC system revealed issues related to the improper functioning of the heat pump installation and ventilation system, as well as irregularities in their design and the selection of devices in respective installations. The possibility of optimising the operation of the existing system was indicated by, among others, expanding the ground heat exchanger installation and replacing current heat pump units with ones that are better suited to cover the building’s heat demand. Also, upgrading air handling units with ones equipped with heat exchangers of higher efficiency was recommended.

The paper deals with innovative technologies for maintaining the microclimate in energyefficient buildings through ventilation systems. A detailed analysis of scientific publications on studies of soil heat exchangers, in particular their efficiency and features of application in microclimate systems, has been carried out. A schematic diagram of an air conditioning system with a soil heat exchanger has been given. Analytical and graphical dependences for determining the cooling efficiency of air supply in a heat exchanger for the warm period of the year in temperate climates have been presented.

Sick building syndrome SBS is the result of the presence of chemical compounds in the air, irritating the mucous membrane, causing headaches, dizziness and malaise. The reason for the occurrence of such compounds may be their emission inside the building, but often these types of compounds get through ventilation channels along with the sucked air, which is closely related to meeting thermal comfort standards. At present, many ventilation systems are automated, in which part of the air circulates inside the building, and only as much air is exchanged as is necessary to maintain appropriate standards. This solution allows maintaining low energy efficiency and ensuring adequate parameters of the air taken in from the outside. However, it requires the use of appropriate filters to reduce the amount of chemicals entering the building along with the sucked air. Currently, various types of both passive and active filter solutions are known. The paper presents a solution based on an automated ventilation system in cooperation with a ground heat exchanger. Such solutions require the use of appropriate filters to reduce the amount of chemicals entering the building along with the sucked air. Currently, various types of both passive and active filter solutions are known. This paper describes an innovative solution to use the system ground heat exchanger with a zoolite biological filter. The results of the research were presented, and the percentage reduction rate was determined. Studies show that ground heat exchangers reduce the presence of chemical compounds in the air, but they are also an emitter of carbon oxides. The combination of a ground heat exchanger with a zoolite filter causes these two devices to complement each other in reducing air pollution. As a consequence, in this way air is obtained with a significantly regulated proportion of chemical compounds and appropriate temperature.

Wydajność wymiany ciepła w gruntowych wymiennikach ciepła (GHE) w wielu projektach zmniejsza się wraz z długością czasu eksploatacji. Powoduje to obniżenie wydajności pracy zastosowanej pompy ciepła. Problem wynika głównie z braku pogłębionych badań dotyczących wpływu ogrzewania i wilgotności na pracę gruntowego wymiennika w glebie nienasyconej. W pracy wykorzystano kompleksowy model numeryczny ośrodka porowatego rozwiązujący w sposób symultaniczny bilans masy, pędu i energii. Wielkości odniesione zostały do objętości sześciennej gruntu. The heat transfer efficiency of ground heat exchangers (GHE) in many projects decreases by long time exploitation. This results in the decrease of performance of the heat-pump system. This is mainly because of lacking of the deep research about the heat and moisture transfer influence on the GHE in unsaturated soil. In this work, a comprehensive numerical porous model containing the balance of mass, momentum and energy was used. The parameters of the model are based on local climatic conditions. The 8-hours operation of the ground heat exchanger with migration of moisture in unsaturated soil has been numerically mapped. Results from unsaturated soil we have been compared with results of saturated model. The size of streams have been references to cubic volume of ground. We have been observed high speed of changing parameters in based streams. A review of works on similar topics recently published has been made.

The efficiency of heat exchange in ground heat exchangers (GHE) in many projects decreases throughout their service life. Large temperature fluctuations were observed during feeding of the exchanger and during its natural cooling. This problem stems mainly from the lack of in-depth studies on the impact of heating and humidity migration on the operation of ground heat exchanger in unsaturated soil. In our work we applied a numerical model of a porous medium with multi-component fluid flow. The mathematical description was expanded with additional streams describing the exchange of thermal energy in the backfill material and the structure of the porous model. Ground porosity was mapped geometrically and mathematically. We introduced the definition of total temperature. The results were compared with the simulations performed for the model solving the classic heat exchange equation. The model was verified on the measurement data read for 3 sensors installed at different depths of one hole and at different time intervals. The parameters of the model are based on local climatic conditions of Jabłonna near Warsaw. 24-hour operation of a single hole has been numerically mapped. The results proved a much greater convergence with the actual data than those obtained for the classic model describing heat exchange. The critical point of the model was the selection of coefficients describing the flow resistance of i-components in the porous medium and the individual components of the adopted definition of the total temperature. Extended discussions were carried out in the section on model verification. We also performed a review of works on similar topics published recently.

Wśród stosowanych metod obliczeniowych wymienników gruntowych wyróżnić można dwie: metodę Bosego i in. oraz metodę ASHRAE.

The ground heat exchanger is an essential element of the heat pump that determines the correct operation of the entire device. Its selection should be made on the basis of the results of the design calculations that accommodate specificity of the heat exchange process in the ground. Among others, the Bose et al. method and the ASHRAE method are applied to calculate the ground exchangers. The aim of the paper to present the computational algorithms for vertical ground exchanger, run the examples of design calculations that consist of determining the depth of boreholes (the length of tubes) and compare the calculation results obtained with the applied algorithms. Two methods based on the Bose et al. model and the ASHRAE model were used during the calculations. They pertain to the single U-tube type exchanger for either one, three or six tubes in a loop. The calculation results of the length of tubes (the depth of boreholes) obtained with both methods are not fundamentally different. Greater depths of boreholes, and thus lower heat flow rate intensity was achieved using the ASHRAE method. The percentage differences do not exceed 20%. Due to the greater universality of the Bose et al. model, it is recommended to use the calculation method based on this model in practice.

Zyski ciepła były dziewięciokrotnie wyższe niż strumień chłodu możliwy do uzyskania w GWC. Do analizy wykorzystano własne arkusze kalkulacyjne, dane meteorologiczne dostępne na stronach internetowych Ministerstwa oraz program obliczeniowy GWC jednego z producentów wymienników.

The article presents the results of comparative calculations carried out on two systems considered to be an alternative to single-family buildings. One is mechanical ventilation supported by a ground heat exchanger, the other is mechanical ventilation and a multi-split air conditioner. Energy and economic analysis based on meteorological data is to answer the question whether these are equivalent systems and which one is more effective. Particular attention was paid to the work of the heat exchanger in the summer because the heat gains and therefore the potential cooling demand of the building is not a simple function of temperature. A comparison of the costs of installation and operation of GWC with multi – split air conditioning dedicated to the analyzed building was carried out. For the GWC ventilation system, the calculations took into account the hourly variability of cold demand, variability of the heat supplied (or received) in GWC, change in the efficiency of heat recovery with change of the inlet air temperature to the recuperator in the ventilation unit and the increase in the cost of electricity supplied through the additional air channel. For the system with the air conditioner, the difference in operating costs due to the change in energy efficiency of the operating refrigeration cycle was taken into account, as well as the efficiency reduction to the level corresponding to the GWC cooling capacity. The analysis showed a very long payback period for investments in GWC (over 27 years) and significantly insufficient cooling capacity of the ground in relation to real needs. Heat gains were nine times higher than the cold gain from the GWC. Our own spreadsheets, meteorological data available on the Ministry’s website and the GWC calculation program of one of the exchanger producers were used for the analysis.
The article presents an attempt to determine the operating characteristics of a ground heat exchanger working in the system with a heat pump. The values obtained as a result of numerical CFD simulation were compared to design assumptions. Thermal power estimates were completed for averaged ground temperature conditions, focusing on an 11-hour operation period, which constitutes one day of plant operation. A direct coupling model of the equation of energy in the solid body and flowing liquid was used in the numerical simulation. An isotropic soil structure with physical properties corresponding to the actual site was assumed in the simulation. No potential migration of the heat stream caused by present watercourses was considered during the simulation.

Infrared heating systems, unlike other systems of providing microclimate in poultry houses, carry out local heating. In addition, infrared radiation positively affects on the body of the bird, especially on young animals. Due to the ever-increasing price of energy in the whole world, alternative energy is intensively developing: wind, solar, biogas, geothermal, etc., which indicates the relevance of developments in this direction.
