This research investigates the development of a cost-effective IoT-integrated optical thickness sensor utilizing an LED light source for product quality monitoring. The primary objective is to assess the feasibility of employing a simple optical device to measure the thickness and color of transparent flat surfaces. The methodology involves an RGB LED source that emits light toward the transparent plastic sheet, with the transmitted light being collected by a photodetector and sent to a NODEMCU through an operational amplifier. The LED-emitted rays are par tially reflected by the material layer, while the remainder of the light is either absorbed or transmitted depending on the material properties. The optical sensor is connected to the Blynk application to enable IoT capabilities, allowing for the collection of 200 data points per measurement. Ex perimental results demonstrated that the sensor achieved a maximum sensitivity of 1.44 V/mm and a linearity of 95.49% when measuring a trans parent green plastic sheet with a green LED light source. This work underscores the potential of integrating optical sensing technology with IoT solutions to enhance quality control processes in various industries.

The project addresses the significant challenge posed by the substantial waste heat generated during the operation of high ‑power LEDs. To tackle this issue, the project proposes a novel solution involving the utilization of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) and a heat exchanger to convert the waste heat into usable energy. By strategically placing a high ‑power LED on the TEG with an accompanying heatsink for efficient heat dissipation, the system aims to enhance overall energy productivity while mitigating environmental impact. The inclusion of capacitors for voltage stabilization and energy storage, coupled with a boost converter to elevate TEG output to 5V, aligns with the chosen DS18B20 temperature sensor to emphasize energy efficiency. The project’s analysis reveals a substantial increase in power generation by cascading five TEGs in series, result ing in a remarkable increment of 236.20% compared to a single TEG. Additionally, the capacitor voltage charge analysis indicates a significant in crease of 59.91% for a 2.5V 10F capacitor compare to 2.7V 50F capacitor for 6 minutes duration. These findings underscore the project’s efficacy in addressing waste heat challenges and advancing energy reclamation from high ‑power LED systems.

In the presented experiment, we tested the influence of irrigation with different proportions of leachate collected from the leachate sump of municipal solid waste landfill in combination with LED light on the capacity of model plant to remove some heavy metals (HMs) (As, Cr, Cd, Ni and Hg) from the soil and to store them in the biomass of model plant Sinapis alba L. There were six variants irrigated either with distilled water (control) or with a combination of distilled water and leachate (20 %, 50 %, 75 %, 90 %, 100 %). The variants were divided into two groups: A (LED) and B (no LED) and concentrations of HMs and their interdependence (concentration of HM in the soil and in the plant) were monitored in the soil/plant samples. The measured values of HMs concentration in the soil and plant samples did not show a positive influence of LED light on the phytoextraction of HMs. A significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) sorption of HM by the model plant was demonstrated only in Cd and Hg where the difference between Group A and Group B was approximately 10 mg kg–1. Furthermore, enrichment coefficient, EC, was established for the respective HMs and experimental variants. EC values > 1 indicating “high accumulator plants“ were measured for Cd and Hg for all variants of Group A. In Group B, EC values > 1 were recorded for Cd and Ni only in the control variants, and for Hg in all variants with the application of leachate (20 % → 100 %).
In the realm of high-power LED applications, several critical concerns emerge, significantly impacting LED operational efficiency and reliability. Among these concerns, wire deformation during the LED encapsulation process poses a substantial threat to LED longevity. This research endeavors to investigate the influence of gold wire quantity on the LED encapsulation procedure. Leveraging ANSYS Fluent, our study employs the Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique along with a user-defined function (UDF) to model the deposition of epoxy materials onto the LED. Moreover, ANSYS Fluent is harnessed for a comprehensive analysis of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) phenomena that occur between the gold wire bonding and the epoxy materials. The FSI modeling allows us to indirectly quantify the stress exerted on the gold wire bonding during the encapsulation process. Our simulations encompass a range of gold wire quantities, spanning from 1 to 5, while a validation experiment is conducted to affirm the structural integrity of epoxy materials as per the simulation setup. Our findings reveal a direct correlation between increased epoxy material density and heightened wire deformation, stress levels, and strain distribution on the wire bonding. For EMC, which has the highest density, the maximum gold wire deformation, Von Mises stress, and strain distribution on the gold wire are 2.6616×10-8 mm, 0.00064 MPa, and 8.2019×10-9, respectively. Additionally, the simulations underscore that augmenting the number of gold wires exacerbates stress and strain distribution, assuming consistent epoxy material usage. The present study will contribute to the understanding of the mechanical aspects linked with LED encapsulation and present potential opportunities for improving manufacturing procedures and guiding future experimental attempts in this research domain.
Imaging based on the photoacoustic (PA) phenomenon is a type of hybrid imaging approach that combinesthe advantages of pure optical and pure acoustic imaging, achieving good results. This method, which offershigh resolution, suitable contrast, and non-ionizing radiation, is valuable for the early detection of various typesof cancer. Recently, multiple studies have focused on improving different components of this imaging system. Inthis presentation, we implemented a simplest form of a PA imaging system for detecting blood vessels, given thatangiogenesis is recognized as a common symptom of many cancers. For the first time, we implemented a high-power light-emitting diode (LED), to replace bulky and expensive lasers, and integrated circuit technologiessuch as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for a simple LED driver circuit and data acquisition (DAQ).Using an FPGA block, we successfully generated a 200-ns square pulse wave with a repetition frequency of25 kHz, whose amplified form can drive a high-power LED at 1050 nm for appropriately stimulating the sample.By using ultrasonic sensors with a central frequency of 1 MHz and a DAQ system with 16-bit accuracy, alongwith a suitable algorithm for image reconstruction, we successfully detected blood vessels in a breast tissuemimic. With the use of the FPGA-based block, the image reconstruction algorithm was accelerated. Finally, the simultaneous and first-time use of LED and FPGA-based circuit technology for driving the LED, outputinformation processing and image reconstruction were performed in PA imaging.

Discoveries in medicine concerning the influence of light on human physiology provoked the creation of the Human Centric Lighting (HCL) approach. Research dedicated to this mainly focuses on optimally matching light parameters to human needs, e.g. increasing concentration, relaxation, etc. However, only a properly designed light source is capable of meeting HCL goals. This paper focuses on the LED luminaire design used in HCL systems. A review of LEDs dedicated to HCL systems was performed. Their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The Tunable White (TW) design is shown to be the most universal solution for HCL systems because it enables regulation of the colour temperature and spectrum, depending on user needs. However, TW is also the most complex in design. The problems that might arise during TW luminaire design are discussed. Example strategies on how to solve them, focusing on colour mixing and LED arrangement are given. Practical examples of TW luminaire design are also described, each one with a commentary covering encountered issues and their solutions.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can undoubtedly be called the light source of the beginning of the 21st century. The transition from conventional light sources to LEDs took place at a very fast pace. We are now in a market situation where these sources have already reached very high parameters. Therefore, in addition to visual effects and energy efficiency, we also started to focus on optimizing the biological and emotional impact of light on humans. For some time now, we have been using the term Human Centric Lighting (HCL) to emphasize the idea of lighting design that puts people at the centre of attention. In this article I will try to discuss the idea of HCL and provide guidance on how to implement it in projects.
In order to minimize errors during the LED spectrum fitting process and achieve a closer match between the fitted spectrum and the target spectrum, a method employing double Gaussian functions for fitting is proposed. This approach, in comparison to the widely applied modified Gaussian model, avoids issues such as sidelobe uplift when dealing with narrow-band LED spectra. It demonstrates effective fitting for narrow-band LED spectra, exhibiting higher fitting accuracy at the bottom of the spectrum compared to the simple Gaussian model. Moreover, this fitting method introduces no additional fitting variables. The model is constructed by combining two Gaussian functions with weighted summation, and optimizing the weighted coefficients of the two Gaussian functions achieves the best fitting results. Finally, the proposed model is applied to fit various LED spectra, yielding satisfactory results. The outcomes indicate that the overall fitting performance of the double Gaussian model surpasses that of the Gaussian model and the modified Gaussian model.
The paper presents the results of the study of flickering brightness and stroboscopic effect of commercial samples of light-emitting diode (LED) lamps and lamps entering the market from various manufacturers of lighting products. The criteria for assessing the compliance of the flicker level and the probability of detecting the stroboscopic effect are the short-term parameter of flicker and the indicator of the visibility of the stroboscopic effect. The level of flickering was also evaluated in accordance with the recommendations of the standard of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). When measuring the flicker parameters in the frequency range up to 80 Hz and the stroboscopic effect with light modulation up to 1.2 kHz, the spectrometer MK 350S was used and the metrics recommended in international standards. It has been shown that most of the tested LED lamps and luminaires for general lighting meet the requirements regarding the safe level of flickering brightness and the visibility of the stroboscopic effect. The studied samples mainly meet the higher requirements recommended in the American standard IEEE 1789:2015. On the basis of the obtained results, the conclusions were drawn that the modern technological capabilities of the production of LED products are able to provide the market in accordance with the established requirements. The achieved level of light flickering of LED sources is lower than that of any other types of sources for general lighting powered by an alternating current network.

In modern telecommunication engineering, visible light communication (VLC) is developing a competitive advantage over the traditional RF data communication model since it uses light to transmit data. Optical filters play an important role in optical communication systems to enhance the transmission rate of bit-error rate (BER), especially as a result of noisy environments. We investigate the VLC signal performance induced by four types of filters, including Bessel, Gaussian, rectangular, and trapezoidal filters. The BER is considered an important aspect of improving optical system performance, as it indicates less crosstalk and fewer interferences within the system and is analyzed using eye diagram opening penalties. In our simulation results, the Gaussian filter performs best among these four types of filters. In this paper, a VLC indoor model is developed and simulated using an eye diagram, a bit error rate, and a transmission distance for the proposed model. The results from this study show significant improvements of Gaussian filter over other optical filters for next-generation optical networking systems, the overall BER of a Gaussian filter-based indoor VLC system is less than 9.6×10–15, when the bandwidth of the optical filter is 5 nm at the quality factor of 14 dB.

In 2006, lighting was responsible for 19 percent. global active electricity consumption. Thanks to investments in LED luminaires, this share has dropped to 13% within 12 years, and in 2030 it should reach the level of 8%. The authors present, based on the example of a selected city (population over 100,000), the concept of implementing this idea based on the 1: 1 exchange - luminaires with LED sources in place of discharge luminaires. They describe the methodology of this exchange and the implementation of control systems. Based on the measurements of electrical parameters of luminaires, they present the estimated costs of consumption of electrical energy components during the year. They also assess the energy efficiency of the analyzed installation with the control of astronomical clocks.

This article presents some results of work on the selection of the most promising types of lamps for various objects in industry, in commercial and residential buildings. It is shown that the use of a particular type of lamp depends on the conditions of a particular country (the cost of credit resources, the availability of different types of lamps on the market, and government incentives or restrictions), as well as on the conditions of the specific object (cost of lamps, duration of operation during the day, tariffs for energy resources, the cost of equipment and its installation (dismantling, utilization), the cost of replacing the equipment after leaving it, the term of service of various types of lamps). It is also necessary to consider the possible risks of changes in tariffs and the cost of money

W artykule przedstawiono niektóre wyniki prac nad doborem najbardziej obiecujących typów lamp dla różnych obiektów w przemyśle, w budynkach komercyjnych i mieszkalnych.
Nowadays, systems are more complex and require high reliability for their components, especially critical system components. Therefore, to avoid serious damage, system are often replaced before the actual failure. The replaced parts are considered to have “soft failure”, and the limit in which the parts are replaced is known as the critical level of the degradation process. Determining the appropriate value of the critical level for a product is an important problem in their exploitation, as well as for predicting the Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) or Remaining Useful Lifetime (RUL) of this product based on the degradation data by the mathematical models. In this article, an approach in determining the critical levels based on failure data from an accelerated test is introduced. This approach is applied with the degradation process of Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) in an accelerated test and a type of Wiener process-based model is used to predict the MTTF or RUL of LED based on their degradation data and the found critical level.
