Salt deposits in the Wieliczka area (Wieliczka Salt Deposit – WSD) in southern Poland comprise salt-rich strata belonging to an evaporite succession that originated in the Carpathian Foredeep basin in the Middle Miocene Badenian (Serravallian) times, ca 13.81–13.45 Ma. Although they have been mined since the 13th century and decades of investigations provided abundant data on their origin and structure, some aspects of their geological evolution are still not fully understood. This study presents current concepts on the lithostratigraphy and tectonics of the WSD. The salt-bearing facies developed near to the southern basin margin, delineated by the Carpathian orogenic front. Such a location triggered the redeposition of sediments and gravity-driven deformation followed by tectonic deformation related to the forelandward advancement of the Carpathian thrusts. As a result, the WSD consists of folds and slices composed of two main salt members: (1) the stratified salt member, with intercalating salt, sulphates and siliciclastics, and (2) the boulder salt member, built of clays with large, isolated blocks of salt. The stratified member contains abundant meso-scale tectonic structures recording the soft-sediment deformation and deformation related to the northward tectonic push exerted by the advancing Carpathian thrust wedge. The boulder member originated due to the syntectonic erosion of evaporites along the basin margins and their redeposition during progressive northward migration of the Carpathian front. Recent interpretations of seismic data imply that the WSD constitutes the core of a triangle zone developed at the contact of the Carpathian orogenic wedge with the backthrust-displaced foredeep sedimentary fill. Meso-scale examples of sedimentary and tectonic structures in the salt-bearing succession exposed in the underground Wieliczka Salt Mine are described and their formation modes discussed.

W 1992 roku w Kopalni Soli „Wieliczka” doszło do katastrofy wodnej. Podczas przebudowy ostatnich metrów poprzeczni Mina zlokalizowanej na IV poziomie kopalni zaistniały gwałtowne wypływy wody niosącej duże ilości materiału skalnego. Apogeum wypływów miało miejsce jesienią 1992 roku, kiedy doszło do destrukcji powierzchni terenu na przedpolu poprzeczni. Przyczyny zaistnienia katastrofy są złożone i sięgają początku XX wieku, kiedy kopalnia pod presją krytyki dotyczącej złej jakości wydobywanej soli poszukiwała nowych pól eksploatacji złoża. Do prac rozpoznawczych należało przedłużenie północnych końcówek poprzeczni Strzelecki, Dunajewski i Mina, dokonane w latach 1908-1917. Z powodu braku właściwego nadzoru nad prowadzonymi pracami, przekroczono granicę złoża i otrzymano w efekcie dopływ nienasyconej wody pochodzącej z utworów chodenickich. Granicy złoża wówczas nie wychwycono, o czym świadczą archiwalne materiały kartograficzne z lat 20. Wyciek w poprzeczni został zarejestrowany i podlegał systematycznej kontroli. Widnieje on na archiwalnej mapie z lat 30. Katastrofa ta oprócz negatywnych skutków miała jednak także swe pozytywne aspekty w postaci restrukturyzacji kopalni i wypracowania nowoczesnych metod zwalczania zagrożenia wodnego w górnictwie solnym.

Catastrophic water intrusion into the Wieliczka Salt Mine occurred in 1992. When the final section of the Mina Crosscorridor, located at Level IV of the Salt Mine, was under reconstruction, sudden inflow of water carrying large amounts of rock material encroached the workings. The maximum leaks volume occurred in the autumn of 1992, with the destruction of land surface on the foreground of the cross-corridor (phot.1). The causes of the catastrophic events were complex and went back to the beginning of the 20th century when the Salt Mine management started to search for new mining fields under the pressure of criticism relating to the poor quality of extracted salt. Exploration works involved extension of the northern sections of the Strzelecki, Dunajewski, and Mina Cross-corridors conducted in 1908-1917. The last of the three projects failed, owing to the geological structure of the rock mass (fig.1). The salt deposit boundary was penetrated by the cross-corridor, probably due to poor supervision, and, consequently, unsaturated water originating from the Chodenice formation (fig.6), flew into the workings. The salt deposit boundary was not correctly identified, as proved by the archival cartographic materials of the 1920’s (fig.2,3). The leak was registered and put under regular inspections which we can see on the 1930’s maps (fig.4). After World War II, the technical condition of the cross-corridor was neglected and the end section several dozens of metres long collapsed in 1971. The water could not be controlled any longer and it migrated to the lower levels of the Salt Mine, causing rock mass destruction (fig.5). The management decided to reconstruct the cross-corridor in the 1980’s and plug the leak. The salt mining instructions adopted by the Chemical Minerals Corporation ordered plugging water leaks on location to prevent migration of unsaturated water within salt deposit. In the second half of the 1980’s, the reconstruction project was designed, but the works were too extensive (fig.7). The project was conducted in the early 1990’s, the period of social and economic transformations, as well as personnel replacements, occurring in Poland and in the Salt Mine itself. Those also contributed to the developments. Besides the negative effects, the catastrophe resulted in the implementation of a restructuring project and working out modern methods of water hazard control in salt mining.

Assessment of viability of oak seeds is mainly performed by mechanical scarification followed by visual assessment by trained employees. This procedure is slow and prone to human errors, thus automation of this process is desirable. Shortening the design of complex automation systems requires the use of modern methods, allowing for modeling and simulation of systems containing elements of mechanical, electrical and digital components. The article presents selected aspects of the design of control algorithms for the acorn scarification prototype. A virtual prototyping and Model-Based Design (MBD) approach have been used.

W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane aspekty projektowania algorytmów sterujących stanowiska badawczego do skaryfikacji żołędzi. Do rozwoju stanowiska badawczego wykorzystano wirtualne prototypowanie oraz metodykę projektowania opartą na modelu (MBD - ang. Model-Based Design).

Videoplethysmography is currently recognized as a promising noninvasive heart rate measurement method advantageous for ubiquitous monitoring of humans in natural living conditions. Although the method is considered for application in several areas including telemedicine, sports and assisted living, its dependence on lighting conditions and camera performance is still not investigated enough. In this paper we report on research of various image acquisition aspects including the lighting spectrum, frame rate and compression. In the experimental part, we recorded five video sequences in various lighting conditions (fluorescent artificial light, dim daylight, infrared light, incandescent light bulb) using a programmable frame rate camera and a pulse oximeter as the reference. For a video sequence-based heart rate measurement we implemented a pulse detection algorithm based on the power spectral density, estimated using Welch’s technique. The results showed that lighting conditions and selected video camera settings including compression and the sampling frequency influence the heart rate detection accuracy. The average heart rate error also varies from 0.35 beats per minute (bpm) for fluorescent light to 6.6 bpm for dim daylight.

Automated and intelligent video surveillance systems play important role in current home care and facilities security applications. Among many research problems is graphical visualization of semantic messages to the human operator that he can percept information in more natural way. The other essential research question is how to recognize 3D objects and their state on the monitored scene only from their views (2D images from the camera). In this paper we continue our previous work on data fusion in visualization of 3D scene semantic model and propose to recognize events and states of scene objects under surveillance in an automatic way using feedback provided by the renderer. We developed ray-tracing based visualization for surveillance system, that is capable of recognizing object’s state and at the same time present relevant information to the human operator.

An algorithm to design the small size 2-D filter masks with arbitrarily selected rotation angle has been proposed. The classical filter mask of size 3 × 3 is obtained from the reference Fourier space characteristics, rotated in the Fourier domain. The efficiency of the suggested method was illustrated with examples based on the Sobel gradient mask and two test images. Comparative computations indicated that the accuracy of the filtering result with use of the small size filters is noticeably better when the filter has been designed with use of the Fourier characteristics rotation than after direct rotation of the mask in the pixel domain.

Content available Colourful speleothems in the Wieliczka Salt Mine
EN
Secondary halite deposits in the Wieliczka Salt Mine are represented by various forms of speleothems. Some of them, e.g. stalactites, cauliflowers or crusts, reveal various hues, yellow to red to brown. These hues are related to iron compounds, but the forms, occurrence and composition of these compounds has not previously been studied. To explain the origin of their colours a detailed study of samples collected in the mine, including brines and water soluble extracts and produced experimentally in the laboratory, has been undertaken using SEM, XRD and AAS. The colourful speleothems are compared, using SEM-EDS, with the forms and composition of rusting metal artefacts, where several iron oxide minerals have been identified. We suggest that coloured halite is generally pure halite of which the surface was covered by a ferric minerals suspension in the brine. Colours of the speleothems stem from the various colours of iron minerals whereas their intensity is related probably to the type of fluid that coated the crystals, a continuous film or finely dispersed micron-size mineral aggregates.

During the past centuries, the educational character of the "Wieliczka" Salt Mine was gradually shaped. Only European elites were familiar with the issues of exploiting the Wieliczka salt deposits in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the First Partition of Poland, the Austrian managers of the Salt Mine began to arrange trails for mass tourism. After Poland regained independence, special bonds connected the Salt Mine with the Academy of Mining (presently called the AGH University of Science and Technology). At the end of the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century, the educational field trips were based on a network of documented sites and the nature reserve called the Crystal Grottoes. Since 2009, the trips follow the route called "The Mysteries of the Wieliczka Mine." Apart from the AGH University of Science and Technology, classes were also organised for the students of the Jagiellonian University, Pedagogical University of Cracow, University of Wroclaw, Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Silesia, University of Warsaw, and Silesian University of Technology (2001-2012). Foreign students were coming from Kosice, Ostrava, Parma, or Vienna. Approximately 4,800 students participated in field trips and internships in the "Wieliczka" Salt Mine between 2001 and 2012.

Because the amount of various video streams recorded by video surveillance systems is increasing, the new approach, where human operator analyzing the video is replaced by artificial intelligence system is gaining new followers. The algorithm have to meet several requirements: must be accurate and not produce too many false alarms, moreover it must be able to process the received video stream in real-time to provide sufficient response time. In the article a system is presented which is able to detect and analyze walking pedestrians. It is based on two algorithms: scale space and matching contours using distance transform. The information can be used by other parts of the advanced video surveillance system, namely object tracking by detection, detecting heavy equipment only zone intrusion or for sorting out possible suspicious persons (pickpocket, homeless etc.).

Szyb Górsko został zgłębiony do głębokości poziomu I w pierwszej połowie XVII wieku i ukończono go prawdopodobnie w 1622 roku. W XIX wieku szyb pogłębiano, a w 1954 roku został zasypany do głębokości około 6 m p.p.t. Teren wokół szybu systematycznie osiada, a rejestrowane średnie obniżenia terenu wynoszą ok. 13 mm/rok. W grudniu 2002 roku tempo osiadań wzrosło, powodując spękania budynku nadszybia. W lutym 2011 r. został opracowany projekt techniczny doszczelnienia szybu. Zaprojektowano 83 otwory doszczelniające otaczające szyb, o głębokości 18 m oraz trzy otwory kontrolne w tarczy szybu. Prace cementacyjne zaplanowano w czterech strefach głębokościowych przy użyciu zaczynów cementowych, a realizację projektu rozpoczęto w grudniu 2011 r.

The Górsko Shaft was excavated to the depth of Level I in the first half of the seventeenth century, and was probably completed in 1622. in the nineteenth century, the shaft was extended. in 1954, the Górsko Shaft was filled up to a depth of approximately 6 meters below the ground. Infl ows out of the Górsko Shaft were first observed in the shaft bottom and in Fryderyk August chamber. Through suffusion and leaching salt formations, migratory waters caused soil settling and structural damage to the shaft top building. In February 2011, a technical design for the sealing of the Górsko Shaft was developed, which calls for cementing work and the elimination of surface water infl ow through the shaft into the mine workings. Engineering work related to the restriction of the flow of water into the Górsko Shaft began in December 2011.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an emerging field of science aimed at providing natural ways for humans to use computers. Among many systems are vision-based approaches, utilizing face tracking and facial action recognition. Many sources of variation in facial appearance exists, which make recognition a challenging task. Often, uncomfortable manual calibration of the system is required. Therefore, in our opinion the key issue is the automatic adaptation of the machine to human rather than vice versa.

Interakcja człowiek-komputer (ang. human-computer interaction - HCI) to nowa dziedzina nauki ukierunkowana na rozwój naturalnych i intuicyjnych sposobów korzystania z komputerów i rządzeń.

XX w., prac geofizycznych - termicznych i grawimetrycznych.

Rock sat deposit Wieliczka has extremely varied and interesting geologic structure. From beginning of exploitation at the end of 13th century up to 1996 year, when it was finished, its recognition was successively continued. At the beginning, in the old Polish period in the accidental way, learning by their mistakes, the miners acquainted the secrets of the Wieliczka rock mass. In the course of time planned and more modern methods of rocks study were introduced, using the regular workings net, deep borings or geo-physical methods. Regular deposit development by the rectangular system of working was introduced in the times of the Sas Dynasty, and as a rule it was introduced in the time of Poland partitions. Natural hazards, particularly water hazard, including mine disasters such as in the years 1868-1879 in the workings Kloski-Colloredo II forsed to work out the model not only of the deposit but also surrounding formations. Development of drilling technique in the second half of 20th century allowed to recognise rock mass by drilling methods. Development of science enable the use, already in the twenties and thirties years of the 20th century, geo-physical works - thermal and gravimetric. The geologic progressing recognition of deposit in the period from its discovery up to the year 1945 is presented.

Korozja jest to proces stopniowego fizykochemicznego niszczenia metali pod wpływem działania środowiska otaczającego (przeważnie ciekłego i gazowego). Jednym z nich jest środowisko o podwyższonych zasoleniu, w którym proces ten zachodzi wyjątkowo szybko. Próbki do badań zostały pobrane w czasie kilku zjazdów do Kopalni Soli "Wieliczka". Były to różne metalowe fragmenty (rury, łańcuch, zawory).

Corrosion is a process of physico-chemical destruction of metals under the influence of surrounding environment. In a salt mine, where the salinity of air and water is high, the destruction is very fast and efficient. Metal fragments (pipes, chain), at different progress of corrosion, were collected underground in the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Two main layers of corrosion were distinguished (external "A" and internal "B"), each of them was further subdivided into two sublayers. In addition, black blebs, present on the surface of different metal fragments, were studied. XRD determinations showed that the studied layers were composed of different amounts of: akaganeite, hematite, goethite, halite, magnetite, and subordinate amounts of lepidocrockite. The mineral composition greatly affects the color of the layers. SEM-EDS studies revealed various morphological forms of different chemical composition.

Żużel przewożono i lokowano w pobliskich wyrobiskach komorowych.

WIII-9 leak is located on the third level of Wieliczka Salt Mine in the Koerber crosswise gallery in the area of ''ash shelter'' which was built during the Second World War or just after its finished. Slag from local boiler room was stored in this shelter by the use of three boreholes from the surface. Slag was carried and placed in the nearby chambers. In the area of boreholes droplet leakages were reported since 1969. In 1987 boreholes were liquidated. Leakage discharge was reduced but it still exists in amount of about 0,1 1/min. The inflow is intaken in two places. Changes of this leakage during the dozen years were analyzed on the basis of the qualitative observations (salinity and 504, Ca, Mg contest) and leakage discharge. It was speak about the main assumption of pouring boreholes insulation due to reducing a risk of this area excavation flooding.

The range of SO4/2- content is similar for all the investigated leaks and higher than the Cl content range. The quantity and differentiation of chloride content are various in the presented leaks. The correlation index value of the analyzed chemical parameters (chloride, sulphate and hydrochemical sulphate ratio) was used for estimating the hydrochemical state in the investigated region.
