Content available Perception of safety culture in the aspect of CSR
EN
This article focuses on employees' perception of the safety culture in the context of corporate social responsibility. The main assumption of this approach is based on the belief that protecting the health and life of employees, as well as caring for the environment, are key elements of responsible business operations. This study employs econometric modeling to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on employee behavior related to workplace safety. The analysis, based on four logit models (two full and two reduced), reveals that the perception of safety culture is primarily determined by employees’ position within the organizational hierarchy. Lower-level employees tend to perceive safety culture less strongly in the context of CSR, whereas those in higher positions are more likely to recognize the positive influence of CSR initiatives on its development.

Despite progressive occupational health and safety (OHS) laws, South Africa experiences high workplace injury rates, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Compliance with health and safety standards is notably poor among small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) due to limited time and financial resources, a problem exacerbated in resource-constrained small-size manufacturing enterprises. Understanding employees’ perspectives on safety culture factors is essential to promoting a stronger safety culture within South African-based manufacturing SMEs. Therefore, this study sought to measure South African-based manufacturing SME employees’ perceptions of safety culture factors and to determine whether small-sized and medium-sized manufacturing enterprise employees differ concerning their perceptions of these safety culture factors. Data were collected from 487 South African-based manufacturing SME employees. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, reliability assessment and an independent samples t-test. Results indicate that employees’ perceptions of safety culture factors at their workplace are generally favourable. However, employees in small-sized manufacturing enterprises reported significantly less favourable perceptions of management commitment to safety, safety training, compliance and safety policies than those in medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. Improving safety culture in small-sized manufacturing enterprises requires enhancing management commitment, communication with feedback, as well as implementing cost-effective training, safety incentives and clear policies, and improving safety compliance. Strengthening these safety culture areas within small-sized manufacturing enterprises can improve safety performance, even with resource constraints.

This study aims to examine the occupational traumas experienced by occupational safety specialists following fatal, limb-loss, and serious injury-related workplace accidents, as well as the impact on their safety perceptions and the preventive strategies they develop. This research was conducted using a phenomenological approach, which is a type of qualitative research design. In-depth semi-structured interviews were carried out with 14 occupational safety experts working in various regions of Turkey. Criterion sampling was used to select participants. The data obtained were systematically analysed using thematic analysis. Interviews continued until data saturation was reached, and recurring patterns were observed. The research process and the reporting of findings were structured in accordance with the COREQ checklist. The study identified three main themes: occupational trauma, altered risk perception, and new safety strategies. These reflect specialistic psychological and professional changes following workplace accidents. The study offers insights into how occupational safety specialists adapt their policies and improve safety culture after serious accidents. It emphasises changes in precautionary approaches and their role in fostering safer workplaces. Key policy and cultural enhancement recommendations are also proposed.

In times of contemporary challenges and threats, the aspect of building social resilience through the formation of the safety culture, especially at a local level, is of particular importance. The process of its shaping tends to differ in each community. However, the source of success is the openness and involvement of all actors in a given community (citizens, local authorities, safety institutions and rescue entities or non-governmental organisations). One of the critical and highly committed bodies in local communities, especially rural municipalities, are the Volunteer Fire Brigades (VFBs). The authors of the article undertook research to determine the extent to which the functioning of VFBs influences the shaping of the safety culture of local communities on the example of the rural municipality of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The article presents the results of research carried out by means of a diagnostic survey among the inhabitants of this commune. It has been shown that the activity of VFBs is very highly rated and has a significant impact on increasing the sense of security of the local community. The local community appreciates the openness and involvement of the local VFB in various dimensions of functioning of the Tomaszów Mazowiecki rural municipality. An important result of the research are also suggestions and recommendations for improving the functioning of local VFB units with aim to shape the safety culture in all its dimensions - organisational, spiritual and material.

„Awaria przemysłowa”, „skutki awarii przemysłowej” - to sformułowania budzące natychmiastowy niepokój opinii publicznej. Nie bez przyczyny. Większość z nas potrafi wymienić co najmniej kilka takich poważnych i niebezpiecznych przypadków. Wśród powodów tych zdarzeń często jest nieprawidłowe oznakowanie niebezpiecznych produktów, któremu jednocześnie bardzo łatwo zapobiec.

Content available New evacuation sign "NO ENTRY"
EN
This study addresses concerns about the effectiveness of conventional evacuation signs in directing occupants during emergencies, particularly in situations involving obstacles like smoke, flames, or high temperatures. The research explores innovative solutions to enhance safety during evacuations, focusing on two main approaches: the Active Dynamic Signage System (ADSS) and the dynamic evacuation control system. The study introduces the concept of 23 different pictograms utilizing LED technology, with the "no-entry" sign receiving the highest rating during evaluations. The research emphasizes the importance of dynamic evacuation control systems, suggesting the integration of signs forbidding entry into hazardous spaces. The study concludes that efficient evacuation is crucial for safety culture, necessitating a discussion on the introduction of a new pictogram – the NO ENTRY sign – into the evacuation sign catalog. The authors advocate for the adoption of a dynamic evacuation lighting system and offer an open license for the proposed pictograms to encourage broad discourse.

The dynamically changing operating conditions of modern organizations cause changes in their processes, including project management. It can be observed that, increasingly often, projects are a structured response to problems occurring in the company, especially in the sphere of production and work organization. Therefore, there is a need to determine the factors and conditions that require proper management in order to increase the chances of a successful implementation of a project. This relationship is also recognized in the case of pro-ergonomic projects that implement goals and tasks relating to ergonomics. For this reason, this article addresses the issue of identifying and assessing such factors – those in relation to the way projects are conducted as well as those which concern organizational and safety culture. The main goal of this article is to examine the opinions of experts on the factors which determine the success of pro-ergonomic projects in terms of their importance, and to determine the significance of factors relating to safety culture in comparison. The results of the expert opinion research were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in a box-plot chart. The analysis pointed to the conclusion that factors relating to safety culture were assessed by experts as the most important (compared to the factors connected with organization of the project and factors linked to carrying out ergonomic activities in the organization). It can also be stated that the factors relating to organization of the project (usually resulting from the project management methodology adopted) were rated the lowest.

Building a safe work environment requires a technical and procedural approach, but as the experience of mature organizations and new management theories show, it cannot be limited to this. In addition to the measures mentioned above, there is a need to simultaneously develop an appropriate organizational culture focused on values. However, creating a supportive culture requires a lot of planned activities and time. In this article, we intend to introduce those elements of the system that, in the case of our organization, proved to be the most relevant, and share our years of experience working on the cultural aspect of safety management to inspire others to build attitudes that protect life.

This research article investigates the influence of participative management on the safety culture among contract workers within South Africa's forestry industry. The study aims to address the necessity for a more engaged safety management approach within high-risk workplaces, with a specific focus on South Africa. This focus is essential due to concerning injury and fatality rates, notably in the mining and construction sectors. However, the forestry industry has demonstrated comparatively superior safety performance, as evident from the study outcomes. The research employs a mixed-method survey technique, combining self-administered surveys and structured interviews to gather data. The sample comprises both male and female forestry workers from the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa, who actively participate in operational activities, especially those related to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within the forestry sector. The data extracted from the surveys is subjected to analysis using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. This statistical approach helps establish the relationship between various dimensions of participative management and safety culture. The results of the study unveil a substantial positive correlation connecting participative management and safety culture. This finding substantiates the theoretical premise that a more engaged managerial approach towards safety positively influences the safety culture of forestry workers.

W celu zebrania danych wykorzystano technikę mieszanych badań ankietowych, łącząc samoopisowe ankiety i strukturalne wywiady. Próba obejmuje zarówno mężczyzn, jak i kobiety pracujące w przemyśle leśnym w prowincji Mpumalanga w Południowej Afryce, którzy aktywnie uczestniczą w działaniach operacyjnych, szczególnie tych związanych z bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy (BHP) w sektorze leśnym. Dane zebrane z ankiet są poddawane analizie za pomocą współczynnika korelacji Pearsona. To podejście statystyczne pomaga ustalić relację między różnymi wymiarami zarządzania partycypacyjnego a kulturą bezpieczeństwa. Wyniki badania ujawniają istotną pozytywną korelację łączącą zarządzanie partycypacyjne i kulturę bezpieczeństwa. Odkrycie to potwierdza teoretyczne założenie, że bardziej zaangażowane podejście menedżerów do kwestii bezpieczeństwa pozytywnie wpływa na kulturę bezpieczeństwa pracowników leśnych.

Content available Shaping the climate of construction work safety
EN
Purpose: The interest in the social aspects of work safety results because the human factor plays a key role in the causes of accidents at work in construction. Statistical data for Poland confirm that organisational and human causes, in particular those related to improper behaviour of employees, account for the highest share in the structure of causes of accidents at work according to the TOL classification. Findings: Human behaviour determines the current and future state of occupational safety and requires at least interest. The key factors of human error resulting in accidents include lack of knowledge about hazards in the working environment and appropriate qualifications or irregularities in the behaviour of a group of employees in relation to the adopted social standards, established rules, or inappropriate behaviour. On the one hand, human behaviour depends on the safety culture; on the other hand, it is human behaviour that shapes the climate of work safety by consolidating certain beliefs and attitudes. Research limitations/implications: The measures outlined in work allow for the creation of a desirable safety climate and enable the smooth and compliant operation of the construction site, as well as the economic benefits of minimising losses due to eliminating occupational accidents and illnesses. Social benefits, in turn, can include increased awareness and motivation of construction site personnel, made possible by shaping the desired safety climate by informing and involving workers and their social representatives. Practical implications: The practical application of shaping the safety climate is very important, which will also impact the quality and productivity of the work and the image of the construction workers. Originality/value: The article attempts to systematise terms related to the concept of security climate, and tools for shaping the security climate on the example of construction.

The research objective of this article is to determine the possibilities to influence the shaping of the safety culture in road transport, taking into account the education policy of the state. As a result, the research problem is as follows: "What are the possibilities of effective shaping of the safety culture in transport by the state?". Therefore, a hypothesis was put forward, which comes down to the statement that the most effective way of shaping the safety culture in transport is to pursue an appropriate education policy. To achieve such a research objective, answer the research question and confirm the hypothesis, a range of theoretical research methods were applied, including comparison, analysis of literature, analysis of legal acts, synthesis and analysis, inference (induction and deduction), and abstraction.

Content available remote Fall from height accidents in the construction industry in Saudi Arabia
EN
Falls from height (FFH) are considered the most dangerous accident in the global construction industry, especially in emerging economies like Saudi Arabia. This study investigates the causative factors responsible for FFH accidents in the construction industry in Saudi Arabia. The approach used by the study entailed a review of the extant literature to identify the main causes of FFH accidents. The identified causes were used to develop a questionnaire survey, which was administered to construction professionals in Saudi Arabia. Useable feedback from ninety-one responses was obtained and consequently analysed using the Relative Agreement Index (RAI). The results revealed that the top three causes include “lack of training”, “no safety inspection”, and “no safety meeting and seminar between stakeholders”. The causes were also categorized into three groups including “unsafe acts”, “unsafe conditions”, “communication barriers”, and “management commitment”, where “unsafe acts” was the most influential category. The significance of this study is its potential to help control the occurrence of FFH in the construction industry through the adoption of relevant controls, safety training, and risk-based decision-making in the planning and execution of construction works.
