This paper deals with the uncommon problem of investigating the relationship between the radial force applied to a thrust ball bearing and the resulting radial displacement between its rings. Although such displacement may seem unusual, it can occur in typical bearing systems and potentially cause early wear. The paper aims to present a methodology for determining radial stiffness of thrust ball bearings, along with calculation examples for bearing axial loads of 12 kN, 24 kN, 36 kN and 48 kN. The calculations were performed using specialized software based on the proposed methodology, which is grounded in Hertz’s theory and employs an iterative algorithm. The analysis was conducted for two cases: a constant distance between the rings and a constant axial force. This is a computational study.

Existing structures and masonry structures are subjected to heavy loads, and dynamic vibration is well reflected in the generated processes. These vibrations can affect the condition of the works by reducing the comfort of people working there, as they can reach a level that endangers the structural safety. The effect of vibration on the structure primarily manifests as an additional stress in the present section, which contributes to the stress caused by static loads. In addition, there are often effects of climate-related environmental changes, including fatigue and dynamization destruction of the object. Dynamic loads can have devastating effects on buildings of various types of construction, leading to catastrophic destruction. This article presents a modern methodology for non-invasive testing of masonry structures using vibration processes. Here, the feasibility of using modal analysis methods to assess the state of damage to elements and masonry is demonstrated through the process of vibration and vibration measurement. This is a new approach, utilizing innovative research methods supported by information technologies, to examine the suitability of building materials and the conditions for constructing a diagnostic agent.

The Quaternary soils, QS, are considered widespread materials found near or at the Earth's surface. Despite their engineering characteristics, they are characterised by low vibration damping. On the other hand, materials such as rubber tyre waste (TW) exhibit greater damping capacity. Such material is problematic in the surrounding environment and causes critical hazards. Mixing these materials yields composite geomaterials with distinct characteristics for varied geotechnical applications and helps address many challenges associated with them. To ensure the benefits outweigh the likely risks, systematic testing of the Quaternary Soil-Rubber Tyre Waste (QSTW) mixtures is crucial. The current study surveys the responses of QSTW mixtures under confined-restraint conditions. For laboratory specimens’ preparation, different weight fractions of the TW were mixed, in the dry condition, with the QS (0.0, 15.0, 30.0, 45.0, and 100.0%). The volume deformability, stiffness, and energy dissipation were produced from testing these specimens under zero lateral strain in dry and saturated states. The results indicate that the mixtures of QSTW suffer more deformation and become less stiff with increasing rubber inclusion. Such inclusion permits the grains' rearrangement and allows additional replacement from the solid skeleton, producing different packing. The degree of the nonlinearity of the stress-strain curves increases with higher TW, and the mixtures' response seems "rubber – like" at higher content. In contrast, the absorption and the energy dissipation of the QS augment with the TW inclusion, where the TW acts as a mini damper within the mixtures. These mixtures show high capacity for vibration-damping and thus can be applicable for various infrastructures subjected to vibrations.

In cooperation with the manufacturer of modular houses and timber structures, tests were carried out on timber frame walls covered with gypsum-fiber board loaded with horizontal force in their plane. Various wall variants were tested: walls in which the sheathing was connected to the structure with staples, screws or nails, walls with or without stiffening wooden cross-braces. As a result, the results of the tests were the determination of the maximum horizontal force and stiffness of the tested walls. It was found that the gypsum-fibre board cladding is the main factor influencing the maximum horizontal force. At the same time, it was observed that connecting the cladding to the frame with screws allows for obtaining higher values of horizontal force by approx. 25% compared to connections with nails and staples. The presence of the brace did not contribute to the increase in horizontal force but improved the stiffness of the walls under consideration.

We współpracy z producentem domów modułowych i konstrukcji drewnianych przeprowadzono testy drewnianych ścian szkieletowych pokrytych płytą gipsowo-włóknową obciążonych siłą poziomą w ich płaszczyźnie.

The work concerns the study of the stiffness of bridges as one of the characteristics useful for the assessment of their dynamic susceptibility of the object. To estimate the stiffness of the constructed objects, operating vehicles are used, and the result of the measurements is the deflection function. The test uses vehicles that change their position on the road. On this basis, the function of the influence of deflection is determined, which is presented in the work in the form of two profiles. The Boussinesq solution used was adopted as the result. The effectiveness of the algorithm was justified on the examples of research of soil-steel objects.

This paper presents an algorithm for evaluating the resistance and stiffness of a column base, based on the component method. The first part of the paper characterizes the adopted solution for the column-to-foundation connection, whose main element is a double-cantilever I-beam. The bottom flange of this beam is anchored into the concrete foundation using anchor bolts, while the shaft of the column is attached to the top surface of the upper flange of the beam. Based on the guidelines of the EN 1993-1-8 standard, literature studies, and the author's own analyses, fundamental equations were established for calculating the mechanical properties – resistance and stiffness of individual components of the column base. Subsequently, mechanical models of the analyzed solution were formulated, serving as the basis for determining the relationships for the base’s overall resistance MRd and stiffness S. The final part of the paper includes a numerical example demonstrating the application of the proposed procedure in the calculations of the reinforced column base.

Purpose: The research aims to develop an original design and analytical model of a friction damper based on a slotted cylindrical shell with deformable filler for elastic suspension of sucker rod strings. The developed model should relate the geometric parameters of the "slotted shell – filler" contact system, the number of shell slots, dry friction force effects, and mechanical properties of materials to the desired stiffness-strength parameters of the damper. Design/methodology/approach: The damper design utilises the bending effects of the slotted shell during its frictional interaction with a slightly compressible, deformable filler. In developing the analytical model, the slotted shell is reduced to an equivalent Winkler foundation where each panel formed by slots acts as an independent elastic element resisting the radial pressure of the filler. The equivalent stiffness of the foundation is determined by calibration using the average deflection coincidence criterion. The filler is modelled as an isotropic material, considering the relationship between axial and radial deformations, which allows for closed-form relationships between contact pressure, axial stresses, and settlement. Findings: An original structural design for a friction damper to provide elastic suspension of sucker rod strings is presented. Compact analytical dependencies are developed for determining damper settlement, contact stresses in the friction pair, and ultimate stresses in the slotted shell. Design diagrams are provided for efficient parametric design of the damper structure. Research limitations/implications: The results obtained are oriented toward small deformations and quasi-static regimes, with friction assumed constant. The assumptions correspond to the preliminary design calculation stage. Future research plans to apply boundary-integral approaches based on Green's functions for a more precise analysis of the contact interaction between the slotted shell and filler, and to verify the results through bench testing. Practical implications: A simple and low-maintenance damper design is obtained with high load capacity and effective damping while ensuring sufficient nominal settlement and compact transverse dimensions. The solution is technological – a steel slotted shell combined with a deformable filler forms a maintainable modular unit resistant to field conditions. The analytical results obtained provide engineers with direct tools for damper adjustment. Originality/value: The original shell damper design reduces axial stiffness without compromising load capacity and damping while maintaining compactness and simplicity. A comprehensive analytical model is developed that transparently relates damper geometry, number of shell slots, friction effects, and elastic properties of materials to settlement and stress state. A ready tool for parametric design of the damper for sucker rod string suspension, along with a methodology for calculating related shell-type shock absorbers, is obtained.

This study evaluates and compares the results of two distinct stiffness measurement methods – Direct Cyclic Compression test (DCC) and Indirect Tensile test (IT-CY) – applied to warm mix asphalts (WMA) reinforced with basalt fibres intended for the construction of durable and high performance pavements, specifically surface and road base layers. The asphalt mixtures analyzed comprised surface course asphalt concrete and high modulus asphalt concrete. The production process employed reduced temperatures during both manufacturing and paving, facilitated by the use of a bio-derived fluxing additive and the foaming of the bituminous binder. These mixtures incorporated polymer modified bituminous binders and dispersed fibre reinforcement. Their performance was compared against that of traditional hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. The findings revealed that the direct compression modulus provided a more effective differentiation of mixtures based on the impact of fibre reinforcement. Conversely, the indirect tensile stiffness test highlighted greater variability due to differences in production techniques (HMA vs. WMA) and compaction temperatures. These differences were attributed to variations in the volumetric properties of the samples, influenced by the compaction process. Regarding performance, fibre reinforcement enhanced the complex stiffness modulus across all mixtures. However, the adoption of the WMA technique significantly reduced this parameter. Laboratory test results were further compared with data obtained from samples collected from an experimental road section.

W pracy dokonane zostało porównanie i ocena wyników modułów sztywności uzyskanych na podstawie dwóch różnych metod pomiaru sztywności – bezpośredniego cyklicznego ściskania (DCC) oraz pośredniego rozciągania (IT-CY). Prace obejmowały dwie mieszanki mineralno-asfaltowe przeznaczone do budowy trwałych i odpornych na zniszczenia nawierzchni drogowych: beton asfaltowy do warstwy ścieralnej oraz beton asfaltowy o wysokim module sztywności do warstwy podbudowy. Mieszanki zastosowane w badaniach produkowane były w technologii na ciepło (WMA). W obu mieszankach zastosowano zbrojenie włóknami bazaltowymi. Proces produkcyjny prowadzono w obniżonych temperaturach zarówno podczas wytwarzania, jak i wbudowywania mieszanek mineralno-asfaltowych dzięki zastosowaniu dodatku upłynniającego pochodzenia roślinnego i spienianiu lepiszcza asfaltowego. W obu mieszankach zastosowano polimeroasfalty. Pod względem właściwości mechanicznych, zastosowanie zbrojenia włóknami poprawiło moduł sztywności we wszystkich mieszankach, natomiast zastosowanie technologii WMA znacząco obniżyło moduł sztywności.

A cable-stayed bridge without backstays is an important branch of the cable-stayed bridge family. It tilts the bridge tower to one side and removes the backstay cable, relying on its own weight to balance the tension in the slanted cables. It has the characteristics of novel structure and beautiful appearance and is highly favored in the construction of urban areas both domestically and internationally. This paper, based on the main bridge construction project of the Jinzhou Bridge, uses finite element analysis software to establish a spatial model and simulate the construction process, focusing on parameter analysis and the effect of bridge tower tilt angle. The paper analyzes the impact of changes in parameters such as structural stiffness and tension on the structure in the completed bridge state, and concludes that the sensitivity parameters affecting the deformation and internal force of the bridge are tension, temperature, and shrinkage creep, while the insensitivity parameter is structural stiffness. The force state of the cable-stayed bridge without backstays is closely related to the tilt angle of the tower. By changing the tower’s tilt angle, the paper studies the changes in the structural forces and the impact of the tower tilt angle on the structural performance and bridge cost.

Due to their various benefits, flat slabs are among the most commonly used flooring solutions worldwide. However, their use has been limited because of the risk of punching shear failure between the slab and the columns. Researchers have explored different solutions to address these issues, including using steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC). Although this type of concrete offers advantages, its high cost can increase the overall expense of the structure compared to conventional concrete. An effective solution proposed was using hybrid concrete that combines SFRC in specific areas of the slab—namely, the center and around the columns—while utilizing conventional concrete for the remaining area. This study aims to investigate using hybrid concrete in flat slabs to enhance their punching shear resistance. The areas of fiber-reinforced concrete examined were circular shape. Limited research has explored the application of such hybrid concrete for shear strength, and even fewer studies have focused on the circular shapes of SFRC zones. Two parameters were considered in this study: (1) the radius of the hybrid concrete zone, which was set at two and three times the diameter of the column, and (2) the added percentage of steel fibers, specifically 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. Seven slabs were cast; one slab was made entirely of normal strength concrete (NSC) and served as a control, while six slabs were composed of hybrid concrete, a combination of NSC SFRC. The punching shear capacity, load-deformation behavior, crack patterns, failure mode, stiffness and ductility properties were investigated. The results indicated that hybrid concrete significantly enhanced punching shear resistance and other characteristics of flat slabs at both hybridization zones, specifically at two and three times the column radius. Additionally, the rate of improvement was directly proportional to the steel fiber content used. For example, with a fiber content of 1.5%, the punching shear capacity improved by 41.98% and 66.67% for the zones at two and three times the column radius, respectively. Furthermore, the uncracked stiffness increased by 30.9% and 44.6%, while the load capacity was enhanced by 42% and 66.7% for the same zones.

In the paper, two parameters – stiffness and flexibility – are considered as static characteristics of bridge structures. Stiffness is referred to as the effect of variable load. It is related to the dynamic characteristics of bridges. Flexibility is the inverse of stiffness. Flexibility as a function of time is used to analyze rheological processes, including structural degradation. Owing to the analysis of the relationship between these quantities, an algorithm was created for estimating flexibility based on the stiffness of the object, since the latter value is easier to obtain. In this work, analyses based on computational models of cantilever bridges were performed. The results can be used for other types of bridges, including those with small and medium spans and variable height.

Parametry zastosowane w zweryfikowanym modelu należy stosować podczas projektowania typowych (konfiguracje w dokumentacji producenta) i nietypowych rusztowań.

Scaffoldings are engineering structures and, like other engineering structures, in order to ensure reliability, they should be checked using static-strength analyses. Performing such an analysis requires to create a reliable static scheme, which is currently also a numerical model of the structure. This paper describes the process of developing such a numerical model of scaffolding, and in particular the process of obtaining information necessary to develop this model. In the case of scaffolding, it is recommended that the parameters of the static scheme be adopted on the basis of laboratory tests of individual elements (e.g. base jacks, stands, bracings), selected sets of elements (horizontal stiffness of platforms) and joints. Based on the measurements, the stiffness (or flexibility) and load-bearing capacity of the elements are determined. On this basis, a numerical model should be developed and verified in the next step. This part of the procedure involves comparing the calculation results with laboratory measurement results of the response of a representative section of a system configuration. The parameters used in the verified model should be used to designe typical (configurations in the manufacturer’s documentation) and non-typical scaffoldings.

The article addresses issues related to the experimental testing of steel frame knees with slender webs. The tested knees are described, and a custom-designed testing stand is introduced, which generates the real loading conditions in the knees. The testing stand is equipped with two independently operating data acquisition systems. The first system manages a set of sensors that collect information on displacements and forces, while the second system records data using opto-electronic methods. The tests were conducted on three identical knees, with particular care taken to maintain the repeatability of the testing conditions. The collected and analyzed data enabled the determination of the moment-rotation characteristics of the tested joints, as well as the initial stiffness, elastic resistance, and ultimate bending resistance. The obtained results are very similar to each other, suggesting that the proposed method for testing the joints is appropriate.

The main focus of the paper is on a structural solution in the form of a stiffened base, which is fixed to the concrete substrate by eight anchor bolts. This solution is transformed into a mechanical model of the joint. Based on standard guidelines and literature studies, formulas are presented to determine the mechanical characteristics of the basic components of this model. Using equilibrium and displacement compatibility conditions, formulas for calculating the reinforced column base are derived. Analysis of the model's behavior in both the ultimate limit state and the elastic state allows for the determination of the bending resistance Mj,Rd and the rotational stiffness Sj,ini of the column base, respectively. Fire damage poses a significant risk to reinforced concrete structures throughout their lifespan. Fire exposure influences the stress-strain properties and durability of concrete, despite its non-flammability. Therefore, the strengthening approach is an economic option for lengthening their lifespan. This paper aims to conduct an experimental investigation into retrofitting heat-damaged fiber-reinforced concrete cylinders using welded wire mesh (WWM) configurations. Four concrete mixes were investigated. In total, 48 concrete cylinders were tested under axial compression until failure. The primary variables considered in the testing program consisted of (i) the influence of various fiber types (steel fiber (SF), polypropylene (PP), and hybrid fibers (SF+PP)); (ii) exposure temperature (26°C and 600°C); and (iii) WWM strengthening. Exposure to a temperature of 600°C led to a significant reduction in the compressive strength, ranging from 23.7% to 53.3%, while the inclusion of fibers has a substantial effect on the compressive strength of concrete, regardless of fiber type, with an increased ratio reaching up to 34.7%. The finding also clearly shows that the strengthening of heat-damaged specimens with WWM jacketing resulted in a 38.8%, 4.9%, and 9.4% increase in compressive strength for SF, PP, and SF+PPF specimens, respectively, compared to unheated control specimens. The suggested approaches to strengthening, which involve the use of WWM jacketing with two layers, successfully restored and surpassed the initial concrete compressive strength of the specimens that were damaged due to exposure to high temperatures.

When complex and thin-walled workpieces produced for the aircraft industry are machined, they are supported by fixtures to prevent them from easily deforming or vibrating. To support the workpieces effectively, the stiffness of the fixture should be sufficiently high. However, the criteria required for the fixture dynamics to effectively support a workpiece during machining have not been thoroughly investigated. To minimize trial and error, the design parameters required for the fixture should be determined theoretically. Accordingly, this study proposes a method for theoretically determining the design parameters of a fixturing system. The effect of the substructure thickness on the dynamics of the entire structure was evaluated quantitatively using a theoretical model, and the validity of the model was verified experimentally. The stiffness of the entire fixturing system was estimated using the reacceptance coupling method. In addition, the relationship between the thickness of the substructure and stiffness of the entire structure was evaluated.

This paper focuses on confined masonry walls. Confined walls are very popular in the seismic regions and are used as the prevention of excessive cracking, displacement and a loss of structural integrity. In terms of structural engineering, confined walls, similarly to walls in conventional buildings with conventional load-bearing wall structure, can function as the structure restraint, and not only the walls under mainly vertical load. This paper presents the original proposition of the algorithm that determines stiffness of a single area of the confined wall without openings and with openings, which is based on the S-T (strutand-tie) method in accordance with European standards EN 1996-1-1:2010, draft Eurocode 6 (prEN 1996-1-1:2017), having regard to American standards FEMA 274 and FEMA 306.

The main part of the study formulates a mechanical model of the reinforced column bases, in the form of a stiffened base plate fixed to the concrete by eight anchor bolts. The adopted structural solution was analyzed using the component method for calculations. Symulacje komputerowe wykonano w programie IdeaStatika, służącym do projektowała, m. in. węzłów i połączeń stosowanych w konstrukcjach stalowych. Obliczenia nośności i sztywności podstawy nieużebrowanej wykonano (zasadniczo) zgodnie z wytycznymi EC3, natomiast nośność wzmocnionej podstawy wyznaczono na podstawie prezentowanego w artykule algorytmu. Otrzymane wyniki wyraźnie wskazują, że przyjęte rozwiązania konstrukcyjne w znacznym stopniu zwiększają jej nośność i sztywność względem prostej podstawy. Wymienione wnioski bezpośrednio odnoszą się do analizowanych w artykule przykładów, należy jednak sądzić, że mają one bardziej ogólny charakter i mogą dotyczyć większości stosowanych w praktyce inżynierskiej.

The paper focuses on presenting the methodology of testing corner joints along with the presentation of obtained results. The objective of the conducted research was to experimentally determine the behaviour of welded knees with slender webs under similar loading condition that occur in the knee joints of portal steel frames. Laboratory tests were carried out on a specially prepared testing stand. During the laboratory work, load tests were performed on three identical knees. The testing stand was equipped with measurement equipment, including two data acquisition systems: the SAD 256 for displacement and force sensors, and the Pontos/Aramis – a digital image correlation system. The first knee test served as a verification of the testing stand and the adopted data collection method. After implementing certain changes to the stand, the remaining load tests on the knees were conducted. Based on the conducted studies and data analysis, moment-rotation M-ϕ characteristics of the joints were determined, along with parameters such as initial stiffness S, elastic bending resistance Mel and ultimate bending resistance Mu.
