The article analyzes the potential and marketing support for the development of bioenergy in Ukraine, taking into account European and world experience. It is determined that Ukraine has a significant bioenergy potential, which, however, is not fully realized due to a number of barriers. It is proven that one of the key problems is the ambiguous awareness of business and the population about the production of biofuels. Among large and medium-sized businesses in the agricultural and woodworking sectors, awareness is relatively high, while among the population, it remains limited. It has been determined that Ukraine has the potential of a raw material base for biofuels production, estimated at 22–25 mt of oil equivalent per year, of which the largest share is accounted for by agricultural residues. The main barriers to the development of biofuels production are identified, namely high initial investment, underdeveloped infrastructure, complex regulatory procedures, low awareness, and lack of qualified personnel. It is substantiated that in the context of post-war reconstruction and European legislation, decentralization of electricity production using modern energy technologies is absolutely necessary. It has been determined that to improve the marketing support for bioenergy development in Ukraine, the following priority areas have been identified: first and foremost, conducting information and educational campaigns to raise awareness among the public and businesses regarding the benefits and opportunities of bioenergy; followed by the development and implementation of effective inancial instruments, such as soft loans, grants, and subsidies for relevant projects; and finally, the improvement of the regulatory framework by simplifying licensing procedures and establishing stable rules for investors.

Zi dentyfikowano główne bariery rozwoju produkcji biopaliw, a mianowicie wysokie nakłady inwestycyjne, słabo rozwiniętą infrastrukturę, skomplikowane procedury regulacyjne, niską świadomość oraz brak wy kwalifikowanej kadry.

In the context of the objective threat of depletion of fossil fuels used to meet human needs, the issue of finding alternative sources to meet energy demands is becoming increasingly relevant. Currently, the primary task of national energy strategies is the search for and utilization of alternative types of fuel, characterized by their environmental friendliness and renewability. The production and use of biomass are still less efficient compared to traditional types of fuel. This is due to several factors, such as insufficient government support, underdeveloped material and technical infrastructure, and the dependence of its efficiency on market prices relative to conventional fuels. In recent years, there has been active development of bioenergy crops. However, a number of issues require resolution. The yield of bioenergy crops directly depends on climatic, soil, and other conditions. The results of the conducted studies indicate that the highest shoot height of energy willow in the first year after harvest, reaching 422 cm, was obtained with a planting density of 12 thousand plants ha-1. In this variant, the diameter of the central shoot was 18 mm, and the average number of shoots per plant was 36. The latest biometric measurements showed a tendency for a sharp increase in the vegetative mass of energy willow. During this period, plant height ranged from 409 to 435 cm, and the diameter of the central shoot ranged from 26 to 35 mm. The highest shoot height, 435 cm, was recorded in the variant with a planting density of 5.6 thousand plants ha-1. It was found that the highest biomass yield of energy willow in the first year after harvest was achieved with a planting density of 15 thousand plants ha-1and the application of mineral fertilizers. This yielded 56.2 t ha-1of green mass and 31.8 t ha-1 of dry mass. Under the conditions of the reporting year, the highest biomass yield of energy willow in the first year after harvest was obtained with a planting density of 6.7 thousand plants ha-1, amounting to 57.0 t ha-1of green mass and 31.7 t ha-1 of dry mass.

The paper aims to consider the available policies for biomass output as a feedstock for further bioenergy production in post-war Ukraine in order to draw conclusions and learn lessons for the further deployment of bioenergy in Ukraine, and to define the number of jobs that bioenergy has enabled and could contribute in both Poland and Ukraine in the future. Poland has significant biomass potential, the lion’s share of which is agricultural crop waste, corn, and dedicated energy crops. Ukraine has a significant potential for the production and use of biogas and biomethane due to available feedstock and a developed gas supply system. The employment factor method was used to estimate the number of jobs in bioenergy in Poland and Ukraine. Assessments, which are the main result of the work, indicate that the number of jobs in agriculture for feedstock production for energy purposes may reach thirty-three thousand by 2030 in Poland and thirteen thousand in Ukraine. Agribiomass crop production for energy purposes in Poland is supported by the Common Agriculture Policy of the EU. Energy producers from biomass have priority access to the grid and qualify for feed-in tariffs, premiums and auctions, and special financial programs. In Ukraine, biomass energy producers may have a feed-in tariff for biomass and biogas and a 10% lower tariff for heat from biomass than the tariff for heat from natural gas. Despite the benefits of biomass, the installed capacities for its utilization remain insufficient due to the existing barriers in both countries. In the future, Ukraine will need to develop its agricultural biomass sector more actively than before in order to substitute natural gas and other energy carriers.

Polska posiada znaczny potencjał biomasy, którego lwią część stanowią odpady rolnicze, kukurydza i dedykowane uprawy energetyczne. W przyszłości Ukraina będzie musiała aktywniej niż dotychczas rozwijać swój sektor biomasy rolniczej w celu zastąpienia gazu ziemnego i innych nośników energii.

Due to the constant growth of the world's population, the amount of generated wastewater is also constantly increasing. One of the devices that can use wastewater as a raw material for energy production is a microbial fuel cell (MFC). MFCs technology is constantly evolving. However, to increase its use, it is necessary to improve its efficiency. There are various possibilities to ensure this, such as the use of new electrode materials, new cell designs, or the use of wastewaters from different sources. In this paper the analysis of MFC operation (cell voltage, power, and current density) fed by mixed municipal and industrial wastewaters was shown. Moreover, the change in time of COD was analyzed. Due to cost reduction the membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) was chosen. It was noted that the addition of concentrated process wastewater increases the COD reduction time in the ML MFC. An increase of generated bioelectricity during fed ML-MFC by mixed municipal and industrial (process wastewater from yeast production) wastewater was demonstrated. The highest values of average cell voltage (598 mV), maximum power (4.47 mW) and maximum current density (0.26 mA•cm-2) were obtained for a 10% share of yeast process wastewater in the mixed wastewater, which fed the ML-MFC.

Ukraine’s commitments under the international framework agreements to reduce CO2 emissions and the Global Climate Change Initiative provide the basis for the implementation of bioeconomy mechanisms in the country’s Energy Development Strategy until 2035. One of the goals of this strategy is to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and switch to alternative fuels. The agriculture of Ukraine is assigned the leading role in ensuring the replacement of fossil fuels with biomass of plant origin. The bioenergy potential of the agro-industrial sector of the economy requires extensive research in order to determine and integrate it into the country’s energy sector. The essential characteristics of energy efficiency in the context of the cluster model of organizing the activities of enterprises for the production of biofuel as stable interactions of geographically concentrated economic entities are investigated in this article. Peculiarities of introduction of bioenergy clusters as stable interactions of geographically concentrated business entities (enterprises, suppliers and organizations, including scientific institutions, etc.) have been determined according to a pre-defined and agreed development strategy for all participants without exception at the stage of formation of which the competitive environment is supported taking into account the energy, ecological and socio-economic parameters of the sustainable development of territories. A model of a territorial bioenergy cluster for the production of biofuels from crops and waste was formed and the advantages of creating bioenergy clusters were analyzed. Furthermore, a matrix of a PEST analysis of the formation of bioenergy clusters in Ukraine was formed.

Zobowiązania Ukrainy wynikające z międzynarodowych umów ramowych dotyczących redukcji emisji CO2 oraz Global Climate Change Initiative stanowią podstawę do wdrożenia mechanizmów biogospodarki w Strategii Rozwoju Energetycznego kraju do 2035 roku. W artykule zbadano podstawowe cechy efektywności energetycznej w kontekście klastrowego modelu organizacji działalności przedsiębiorstw do produkcji biopaliw jako stabilnych interakcji geograficznie skoncentrowanych podmiotów gospodarczych.

Content available Legal regulations of biofuel production in Ukraine
EN
The global biofuel industry is characterized by a wide range of legislative and regulatory measures for the development of bioenergy. In order to stimulate the production of biofuels, a set of measures has been developed, including legislative regulation, indicative planning of production volumes, preferential taxation and budget support. Ukraine is among the top ten largest consuming countries of energy resources. Weak and inconsistent state policy in the sphere of biofuels as well as inconsistent legislative provisions regulating activities in the field of production, circulation and use of biofuels, impede the effective development of the biofuel market in Ukraine. The purpose of this article is to determine the components of the system of state regulation of bioenergy and to identify effective mechanisms with regard to improving the legal regulation of the biofuel market in Ukraine. The management processes discussed in this article are provided by several methods, which particularly relate to the functioning of power structures and the end results or goals of the public administration system. Currently, there are significant inconsistencies in the formation and further functioning of the regulatory framework with the legislation of the European Union on the rational use of fuel and energy resources, the limitations of which increase due to inconsistencies between centralized and regional distribution. Therefore, further processes of effective economic development of Ukraine will largely depend on solving the problem of the sustainable provision of available renewable energy resources. Future development of the biofuels market in Ukraine will strongly depend on the institutional and legal conditions in the field of production, circulation and use of biofuels.

Światowy przemysł biopaliw charakteryzuje się szeroką gamą środków legislacyjnych i regulacyjnych dotyczących rozwoju bioenergii. W celu pobudzenia produkcji biopaliw opracowano zestaw środków, w tym regulacje prawne, orientacyjne planowanie wielkości produkcji, preferencyjne opodatkowanie i wsparcie budżetowe. Ukraina znajduje się w pierwszej dziesiątce krajów o największym zużyciu surowców energetycznych. Słaba i niekonsekwentna polityka państwa w sferze biopaliw oraz niespójne przepisy prawne regulujące działania w zakresie produkcji, obrotu i wykorzystania biopaliw utrudniają efektywny rozwój rynku biopaliw w Ukrainie. Przyszły rozwój rynku biopaliw w Ukrainie będzie silnie zależał od uwarunkowań instytucjonalnych i prawnych w zakresie produkcji, obrotu i wykorzystania biopaliw.

Prospects and potential for the development of biomethane production in Ukraine are presented. The biomethane potential due to anaerobic digestion from the most prospective feedstock types is estimated as 9.7 billion m3 CH4/year in 2020. At the level of regions of Ukraine, 60% of the potential for biomethane production is concentrated in all regions of the central part of country (Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Kirovohrad regions), two regions of the northern part of Ukraine (Kyiv and Chernihiv regions), one region of the western part of Ukraine (Khmelnytsky region) and one region of the eastern part of Ukraine (Kharkiv region). Comparative analysis of two main renewable gases - biomethane and green hydrogen - has been carried out. It is shown that greatest prospects are associated with combination of biomethane and green hydrogen advantages, which involves the conversion of hydrogen into methane with subsequent supply to distribution or main gas networks. The use of such a scheme will allow in addition to AD potential of biomethane to add 6.8 billion m3/year of synthetic methane, which can be obtained from methanation of CO2 from biomethane plants and green hydrogen. The total biomethane production in Ukraine could reach 1.0 billion m3/year in 2030. It is expected that biomethane could partly be exported to the EU. The rest could be utilized locally for combined heat and electricity generation in CHP units, heating and industry applications and for transportation purpose. In such a way biogas sector could serve the growing demand in sustainable and clean energy from the transport and industry sectors.

Purpose of the article is to identify and analyse ten most important actions for Ukraine to completely reject Russian natural gas. The analysis was performed taking into account the following basic provisions: territorial integrity of Ukraine is within its state as of February 23, 2022; total energy consumption is at the level of 2021. Under current conditions, Ukraine urgently needs to elaborate and implement an effective and ambitious program to refuse Russian natural gas and other fossil fuels imported from Russia within several years. Such a program will be much required immediately after the end of the military operations at Ukraine’s territory and should be a solid basis for energy recovery of the country at the post-war period. Taking into account Ukraine’s potential of renewable energy sources and other relevant factors, the program must include such important actions as replacement of natural gas with biomass and solid biofuels for heat production, further construction of wind and solar power plants, production of biomethane, introduction of heat pumps, improving energy efficiency in district heating (DH) systems, buildings and industry and some others. Implementation of these actions will give Ukraine the opportunity to reduce the consumption of natural gas and completely replace its imports in the amount of up to 10 billion m3/yr by 2030. Realization of each action requires some specific organizational and legislative measures. To a high extent, these measures coincide with ones needed to overcome barriers to bioenergy development and expansion of district heating in Ukraine. Representative examples of the measures are introducing an electronic trade system for solid biofuels through electronic auctions; starting auctions for the state support of renewable electricity projects; starting auctions for load following units and energy storage systems; adopting the National Renewable Energy Action Plan until 2030; creating a Register for biomethane; introducing competitive heat market in DH systems; introducing incentive tariffs for electricity for heat pumps, including the "night" tariffs.

The increase in population and industrialization leads to an increase in the solid waste year by year. The limited availability, increasing cost and adverse effect of climate change on fossil fuel leads to encouraging the research in the field of finding alternatives for energy sources. The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) can be utilized as a bio-energy source, which reduces the environmental impact and the requirement of landfill areas to dispose of municipal solid waste. Anaerobic digestion is the widely used sustainable approach to treat OFMSW. In recent years, the generation of methane from municipal solid waste has received increasing attention in research. This paper reviews literature published in recent years considering various characteristics of input feedstock parameters like pH, total solids, volatile solids, and water content which affect the digestion quality of the OFMSW and increase the production of methane. A regression model is developed to identify the relationship between methane production and various feedstock parameters. When the chemical compositions of feedstock were used as independent variables, the percentage variation accounted for by the model is low (r2 = 0.63) and also the important observation from the analysis is that the pH of the feedstock influences majorly methane production.

The potential for energy production from effluents and husks generated in grain processing in the rice parboiling industries in Brazil is capable of promoting energy self-sufficiency in the sector, through the production and use of syngas and biogas. However, the production of methane from residues of the rice parboiling industries is still little explored by academic studies, in general studies on the potential of methane production by this same type of effluent are found in the south of the country, however, the same is not true for the production of biodiesel from rice bran oil. The objective of this study was to determine the production potential of biodiesel, methane and electric energy of the largest parboiled rice industry in Rio Grande do Sul, located in the southern region of the country. According to this study, the rice parboiling industry located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has a production potential of 1.2-10² m³ /day of biodiesel, 2.93-10 Nm³ /day of methane and 1.89-10⁴ kWh/day of electricity. Despite being a significant and high potential, which may reduce the financial expenses of the industry regarding the purchase of energy from concessionaires, it is not able to promote its energy self-sufficiency. At the same time, it would be necessary to add the energy production potential of the rice husk gasification syngas highlighted in other studiem.

PL
