Satellite imagery provides an effective tool for large-scale analysis and supports physico-geographical regionalization. In this study, we investigated the possibility of delineating the landscape of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast (Ukraine) into spatial units based on the results of unsupervised classification of Landsat 8 imagery. Five land cover classes were identified: bare soil, forests, shrublands, agricultural crops, and water bodies. The study area was subsequently divided into 6 × 6 km grid cells, and the proportion of each land cover class within each cell was calculated. In addition, three landscape metrics were determined: IJI, DIVISION, and SHDI. In total, five variables describing land cover proportions and three additional variables describing the spatial structure of their distribution within each grid cell were obtained. The analyses were conducted in five variants using five, eight, and two variables. To reduce interdependencies between variables and to obtain an alternative representation of the data, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied, transforming the variables into a set of uncorrelated components. The transformed variables were then used to perform spatial segmentation using a selected segmentation algorithm. The approximate number of 17 segments was not treated as an optimization target, but rather as a reference level enabling comparison between the independently obtained segmentation results and the physical-geographical regionalization of Khmelnytskyi Oblast proposed by Herenchuk (1980). Parameter selection aimed to achieve a comparable level of spatial detail rather than reproduce the reference division. The obtained spatial divisions showed similarity to the reference regionalization. The results were influenced both by the segmentation algorithm parameters and by the number of variables used in the analysis. Full agreement between our segmentation and the reference regionalization was not possible because the reference regionalization also considered physical-geographical features not reflected in the structure and texture of the satellite imagery. We demonstrated that segmentation in the proposed approach, especially when supplemented with additional data, can be used for the delineation of spatial landscape units.

Uzyskaliśmy podziały przestrzeni wykazujące podobieństwo do regionalizacji referencyjnej.

The article presents the potential of using machine learning techniques and remote sensing data in the process of updating the Topographic Objects Database (BDOT10k). The study was conducted in the Dębniki district of Kraków using highresolution aerial orthophotos, airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, and reference BDOT10k data. Automatic building detection was performed in the ArcGIS Pro environment using a deep learning model, which enabled the identification of 1,351 building objects compared to 1,250 buildings recorded in the reference database. A geometric consistency analysis between the detected objects and the BDOT10k data was carried out, along with an assessment of area differences. In addition, the number of building storeys was estimated based on ALS data, assuming a storey height of 3 m. The obtained results indicate that the integration of remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms may constitute a supporting tool for the process of updating national spatial databases.

Remote sensing enables systematic observation of the Earth’s surface through aerial and satellite imagery, supporting a wide range of applications from environmental monitoring to urban planning. Recent advances in deep learning models have significantly enhanced the analysis of remote sensing data; however, these models often require large volumes of high-quality labelled data, which are difficult and costly to obtain due to limitations in sensor resolution and data acquisition. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a class of deep generative models, have emerged as a transformative solution by synthesizing realistic data and improving model robustness in data-scarce environments. In addition to data augmentation, GANs facilitate critical remote sensing tasks such as image super-resolution, cloud removal, cross-modal translation, and change detection. Their ability to model complex data distributions and perform adversarial training makes them particularly effective for addressing challenges such as noise, resolution gaps, and domain discrepancies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of GAN architectures, explores their diverse applications in remote sensing, discusses relevant evaluation metrics, and highlights key challenges and opportunities for future research.

Generatywne sieci przeciwstawne (Generative Adversarial Networks – GAN), klasa głębokich modeli generatywnych, stały się przełomowym rozwiązaniem poprzez syntezę realistycznych danych i poprawę odporności modeli w środowiskach o ograniczonej ilości danych. Oprócz rozszerzenia danych, sieci GAN ułatwiają realizację kluczowych zadań teledetekcyjnych, takich jak superrozdzielczość obrazu, usuwanie chmur, tłumaczenie multimodalne i wykrywanie zmian.

Urban forests provide vital ecosystem services (ES), and quantifying these benefits is essential for sustainable urban planning. The i-Tree Eco tool is widely used for such assessments, but its reliance on detailed field inventories limits citywide applications. Remote sensing offers spatial data, but cannot directly provide all the necessary model inputs. This study presents a framework combining remote sensing with field-based modelling for large-scale i-Tree Eco assessments. Applied to Acer platanoides in Warsaw, Poland, with data from 529 trees, econometric models predicted structural attributes from remotely sensed variables. Using these models and other remotely derived attributes, a citywide i-Tree Eco analysis was performed. The framework evaluated approximately 122,000 trees, which together remove 46 t of pollutants annually, sequester 2,440 t of carbon, and reduce stormwater runoff by 38,100 m³, with an estimated value of €787,000. This study introduces a novel, large-scale approach for the economic valuation of urban tree ES.

W badaniu opracowano zintegrowane podejście łączące dane teledetekcyjne i modelowanie terenowe, umożliwiające prowadzenie analiz i-Tree Eco w skali miasta. Metodę przetestowano na Acer platanoides (klonie zwyczajnym) w Warszawie. Dane terenowe z 529 drzew posłużyły do budowy modeli ekonometrycznych przewidujących cechy strukturalne na podstawie danych teledetekcyjnych. Wykorzystując te modele i inne atrybuty drzew pozyskane z teledetekcji, przeprowadzono analizę i-Tree Eco dla całego miasta. Oceniono, że ok. 122 tys. drzew rocznie usuwa 46 t zanieczyszczeń, sekwestruje 2 440 t węgla i ogranicza spływ wód opadowych o 38 100 m³, generując korzyści o wartości 787 tys. Euro.

A number of different types of information are generally associated with places. It is estimated that about 75-90 % of information may contain an official link to a specific area, expressed as, for example, coordinates, or addresses, and therefore has a spatial character, making data collection a responsible and important stage, which reasonably affects the quality of its results. Information and its sources are treated with particular care and rigor in the scientific field: in most cases, the data must be relevant, reliable, technically simple, and collected quickly at reasonable costs. The analysis of geographic information makes it possible to obtain qualitatively new information and reveal previously unknown patterns. Modern data collection methods are divided into three distinct groups: terrestrial, cartographic, and remote. Remote or aerospace methods are considered to be those that allow information to be collected. It refers to objects on the Earth's surface, phenomena, or processes from space or the atmosphere, recorded by detecting electromagnetic radiation on the ground across various spectral ranges. The involvement of various platforms (providers) of surveillance equipment makes it possible to divide them into: space, aerial photography, and images from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). As a technology justified on security grounds, UAVs show great promise in many areas of application. Effective planning of drone missions allows for the collection of larger sets of data with a higher level of detail and in a shorter period of time. The continuity of information collection for a given territory allows for the most accurate and reliable three-dimensional modelling, spatial analysis and geostatistics of the local situation.

Wildlife monitoring is vital to conservation efforts and the prevention of animal-related negative impacts on human activities and ecosystems. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) enables data collection with no harm to wildlife and in difficult field conditions. This study proposes a method of detecting hoofed animals in UAV-acquired thermal images, addressing the challenges of low-resolution thermal imaging and the presence of other heated objects hindering simple temperature analysis and image segmentation. The proposed method uses machine learning algorithms and is designed to work with a limited size of training dataset. The method consists of an initial segmentation step that detects potential animals based on thermal and geometrical signatures, followed by classification using a Balanced Random Forest (BRF) algorithm. One of the key aspects of the proposed method is the use of geometric and thermal features along with multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) extracted feature representations in BRF. The benefit of the BRF is its speed, little requirement regarding the amount of training data, and its capacity to work with an imbalanced number of objects in different classes. The dataset was collected during two UAV flights over a fenced enclosure with wild hoofed animals. The proposed approach showed high efficiency, achieving an overall accuracy of 90%. These results confirm the feasibility of UAV-based animal detection based solely on thermal images collected during the day and showing many other heated objects. The method provides a solution for wildlife monitoring, with potential adaptability to different species and further applications.

The spatiotemporal variation of vegetation cover in the mining areas of YSR Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques. By focusing on the years 2014, 2018, and 2023, the analysis provides insights into changes observed in water bodies, bare soil, sparse vegetation, moderate vegetation, and dense vegetation. The results reveal dynamic trends in land cover categories, highlighting the environmental impact of mining activities in the region. A significant decline in water bodies is observed, with the area reducing from 3.48 km2 in 2014 to 1.91km2 in 2023. This decrease raises concerns about the potential degradation of aquatic ecosystems, reflecting the ecological consequences of mining operations. The fluctuating pattern in bare soil areas, increasing from 37.64 km2 in 2014 to 40.37 km2 in 2018 and subsequently decreasing to 34.65 km2 in 2023, indicates the complex nature of land use changes and reclamation efforts in the mining regions. The study highlights a significant decrease in sparse vegetation from 6.88 km2 in 2014 to 4.43 km2 in 2018, followed by a substantial increase to 13.49 km2 in 2023. This suggests the resilience of vegetation in certain areas or potential reforestation initiatives. A consistent decline in moderate vegetation is observed, with the area decreasing from 5.72 km2 in 2014 to 4.25 km2 in 2023, indicating the lasting impacts of mining on plant health and ecosystem stability. Fluctuations in dense vegetation areas are noted, with a decrease from 2.31 km2 in 2014 to 1.72 km2 in 2023. This decline may signify habitat disruption and environmental stress resulting from mining operations. The consequences of these spatiotemporal changes in vegetation cover extend beyond the immediate landscape, impacting the ecosystem and environment. The reduction in water bodies and vegetation, coupled with an increase in bare soil, suggests potential biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and altered hydrological patterns. These changes pose significant challenges, affecting local fauna and flora and contributing to broader ecological imbalances. The study emphasizes the importance of employing sustainable mining practices to mitigate these adverse effects, ensuring the long-term environmental health and resilience of the region. Sustainable practices could include measures to protect and restore water bodies, prevent soil erosion, and promote reforestation and habitat conservation. By adopting such practices, the mining industry can help preserve biodiversity, maintain ecosystem services, and support the overall environmental sustainability of the YSR Kadapa district.

The study utilizes Landsat 9 data (OLI-2 and TIRS-2 sensors) to create a geological map of Dak Nong province, Vietnam. By applying spectral analysis methods (PCA, band ratios), image classification techniques (SAM, CEM), and integrating field surveys, the research identified four main geological units: Quaternary sediments, Jurassic sedimentary rocks, basalt, and Cretaceous granite. The results demonstrate that Landsat 9 achieves high accuracy in geological mapping, particularly for basalt (with an error of only 0.68%). However, its ability to distinguish sub-units and areas with complex surface coverage remains limited, requiring support from field surveys to improve reliability

Monitoring of the reclamation processes is crucial for evaluating their effectiveness and supporting decision-making. As part of the REECOL project, several experimental areas have been designated to test new ecological soil rehabilitation solutions and conduct pilot monitoring. This article presents the framework and preliminary results of two pilot environmental monitoring programs implemented in the post-mining area of the Jóźwin IIB open-pit mine. The aim of the first, small-scale program is to assess the impact of composting on improving soil parameters and vegetation growth within an ecological reclamation strategy. For this purpose, three experimental plots of 82 m² each were established. Monitoring includes the collection of soil samples during spring and autumn seasons from 2024 to 2026, as well as visual and spectral (UAV-based) assessment of vegetation development. Researchers during analyses focus on soil physicochemical properties, organic matter content, and microbiological activity. The second, large-scale monitoring program involves long-term assessment of reclamation progress on a larger section of the internal dumping ground, using satellite imagery from the Sentinel-2 mission. The objective is to identify areas requiring further action. The analysis includes time series studies of spectral indices (NDVI, NDWI), incorporating historical imagery. The article also presents preliminary findings on the initial environmental conditions and the first results of the monitoring. The project titled “Ecological Rehabilitation and Long-Term Monitoring of Post-Mining Areas” (REECOL) is carried out by the Sustainable Development and International Cooperation Department of the Poltegor-Institute and will continue until the end of 2026.

Food security is increasingly challenged by environmental changes, natural resource degradation, and population growth. Crop yields have already stagnated in many regions and are further affected by rising temperatures. The growing global population imposes a direct demand on agriculture to produce food, fiber, and fodder, necessitating the consumption of vast amounts of water. To maximize agricultural productivity and ensure sustainable crop yields, continuous crop monitoring is essential. Remote sensing has emerged as a powerful technology for vegetation monitoring, enabling spectral analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery to assess crop health and development. This study utilizes remote sensing techniques in conjunction with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to monitor crop conditions. The Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were estimated using Landsat-9 satellite imagery. The analysis was conducted using QGIS for Tavra Village Farm, near Parul University, Waghodia, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. The observed GCC values ranged from 0.9352 to 0.3297, while NDVI values varied between 0.3300 and 0.0398 over the temporal period. The trend analysis of GCC and NDVI indicated an initial increase from November (early crop growth stage) to January (mid-growth stage), followed by a decline by February (crop maturity stage). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of remote sensing and GIS in monitoring crop growth patterns, offering valuable insights for precision agriculture and resource management.

This study examined land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics in the Garoua-Boulai artisanal gold mining district, Cameroon, from 2015 to 2024 using Sentinel-2 imagery, GIS, and statistical analysis. Supervised classification (Maximum Likelihood, ArcGIS 10.8) and accuracy assessment (overall accuracy 87-94%; Kappa 0.80-0.87) revealed major land transformations. Dense vegetation declined by ~48% and agricultural land by ~19%, while bare land expanded by 183%, built-up areas nearly tripled, and mine sites increased by 34%.Correlation analysis showed strong negative relationships between mine sites and vegetation (r = -0.957) and agriculture (r = -0.932), and positive relationships with bare land (r = +0.928) and built-up areas (r = +0.997). Regression slopes indicated that each hectare of mine expansion corresponded to losses of ~12-17 ha of vegetation/agriculture and gains of ~24ha of bare land. Although limited to three temporal data points, the high correlations and explanatory power (R2) provide compelling evidence of mining-driven land change. These findings highlight the urgent need for stronger regulation of artisanal mining, rehabilitation of abandoned pits, and integration of remote sensing into land governance to support sustainable land management in Cameroon’s mining districts.

Rapid urbanization has the potential to significantly alter local microclimates through the urban heat islands (UHI) effect. This study examines the spatial and temporal changes in land surface temperature (LST) in Krakow, Poland, from 2002 to 2023 in relation to changes in urban land cover. Multispectral satellite imagery from the Landsat 7/8/9 and Sentinel‑2 missions (clear-sky August scenes at ~5-year intervals) was processed using Google Earth Engine to derive LST and spectral indices. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) were computed to quantify vegetation loss and built-up area expansion, respectively. A supervised land cover classification (random forest) identified five classes – vegetation, water, built-up areas, roads, and bare soil – providing land cover maps for each analysis year. Satellite-derived LST was validated against in situ ground temperature measurements from 17 sensors deployed across the city in summer 2023. The results reveal pronounced surface warming in Krakow’s urban core and in newly urbanized districts, corresponding to areas of intensive development and vegetation decline. Statistically, LST was negatively correlated with NDVI and positively correlated with NDBI, confirming that reduced green cover and increased impervious surfaces exacerbate surface heating. The satellite LST showed strong agreement with ground measurements, supporting the reliability of the remote sensing approach. Our integrated methodology and findings underscore the impact of urbanization on the city’s microclimate and the critical role of green infrastructure in mitigating UHI effects. This approach provides a framework for evidence-based urban planning and climate adaptation strategies in other Central European cities.

Gwałtowna urbanizacja ma potencjał, aby znacząco zmienić lokalne mikroklimaty poprzez efekt miejskich wysp ciepła (UHI). Niniejsze badanie analizuje przestrzenne i czasowe zmiany temperatury powierzchni lądu (LST) w Krakowie w latach 2002–2023 w odniesieniu do zmian w pokryciu terenu miejskiego. Wielospektralne zdjęcia satelitarne z misji Landsat 7/8/9 i Sentinel‑2 (sceny z sierpniowego nieba w odstępach około 5-letnich) zostały przetworzone za pomocą Google Earth Engine w celu uzyskania wskaźników LST i spektralnych. Znormalizowany wskaźnik różnicowy roślinności (NDVI) i znormalizowany wskaźnik różnicowy zabudowy (NDBI) zostały obliczone w celu ilościowego określenia odpowiednio utraty roślinności i ekspansji obszarów zabudowanych. Nadzorowana klasyfikacja pokrycia terenu (las losowy) zidentyfikowała pięć klas – roślinność, wodę, tereny zabudowane, drogi i gołą glebę – tworząc mapy pokrycia terenu dla każdego roku analizy. Pomiar LST uzyskany z satelity został zweryfikowany na podstawie pomiarów temperatury gruntu in situ z 17 czujników rozmieszczonych w całym mieście latem 2023 roku.

This study investigates multidecadal changes in the extent of glacierized surfaces in Kommune Kujalleq, southeastern Greenland, between 2000 and 2024. Multispectral satellite imagery from Landsat 7 and Landsat 8, combined with climate data from MODIS and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, was used to quantify changes in summer ice cover and to evaluate their relationship with atmospheric drivers. The Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI ≥ 0.4) was applied to classify ice-covered pixels during the melt season (July–September), and climate variables were derived for both summer and winter seasons. The results reveal an overall net decline in ice-covered area of approximately 4% (about 1,600 km²) over the 24-year period, with substantial interannual variability. Years such as 2015 and 2020 exhibited temporary increases in ice extent, coinciding with anomalously high snowfall and below-average summer temperatures, whereas significant losses occurred during warm and dry periods, notably in 2010 and 2024. Despite these fluctuations, the general trend remains one of retreat, driven primarily by sustained Arctic warming. The study highlights the effectiveness of remote sensing and cloud-based geospatial platforms for long-term cryospheric monitoring and contributes to a better understanding of regional glacier sensitivity to climatic variability in the context of global sea-level rise.

W niniejszym badaniu analizowano zmiany zasięgu powierzchni zlodowaconych w Kommune Kujalleq, w południowo-wschodniej Grenlandii, w okresie wielu dekad, w latach 2000–2024. Wielospektralne zdjęcia satelitarne z satelitów Landsat 7 i Landsat 8, w połączeniu z danymi klimatycznymi z MODIS i misji Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), wykorzystano do ilościowego określenia zmian letniej pokrywy lodowej i oceny ich związku z czynnikami atmosferycznymi.

The escalating challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and urban expansion have amplified the need for reliable, high-resolution, and timely environmental data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies have become indispensable tools for environmental monitoring, enabling the systematic collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial data across diverse ecosystems. This review synthesizes recent innovations in GIS and RS that are transforming environmental surveillance and decision-making. Key developments include the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for enhanced image classification, cloud-based platforms like Google Earth Engine (GEE) for scalable analysis, and the increasing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and hyperspectral sensors for high-resolution monitoring. Furthermore, the convergence of geospatial analytics with big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and participatory approaches such as citizen science is expanding the accessibility and impact of environmental data. Case studies from Africa, Asia, and global initiatives highlight practical applications in land use change detection, water resource assessment, hazard risk mapping, urban heat island analysis, and biodiversity conservation. While the potential of these tools is vast, persistent challenges include data interoperability, technical capacity gaps, policy integration barriers, and ethical concerns related to surveillance and data equity. This review calls for greater investment in open-source tools, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inclusive data governance to realize the full potential of GIS and RS in achieving environmental resilience and sustainability. Future directions emphasise real-time monitoring, ethical frameworks, and the democratisation of spatial intelligence.

Air pollution, one of the most critical environmental and health challenges, causes millions of premature deaths annually. Transportation, especially internal combustion vehicles, is a significant source of pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. This article analyzes methods for measuring exhaust emissions in laboratories and real-world operating conditions, discussing their advantages and limitations. Traditional dynamometer tests conducted on test benches enable detailed analyses but do not fully reflect real-world operating conditions. These tests fail to account for factors such as driving style or variable weather conditions. Modern methods, such as Real Driving Emissions (RDE) tests using Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS), allow for emission measurements in real traffic conditions, although they are costly and time-consuming. Alternative approaches for measuring emissions during transit, such as remote sensing (tunnel, extractive, or open-path methods), enable quick and efficient studies on large vehicle samples, though they come with certain limitations, such as result precision or the influence of external conditions. The article also highlights research on rail vehicle emissions, which remain limited to laboratory engine tests. This underscores the need for further development of measurement technologies and the implementation of more advanced methods for better emission monitoring. Measurements play a crucial role in designing policies aimed at reducing pollution, such as low-emission zones or stricter exhaust emission standards. This is of critical importance for achieving climate goals, such as carbon neutrality.

Continuous environmental monitoring of post-mining areas is essential, even years after the end of mining activity. Olkusz-Pomorzany mine closure in 2020 included shutting down the water pumps (2022), which resulted in the restoration of the underground water table and subsequent water appearing on the surface. The aim of this study is to analyse spatio-temporal water and vegetation changes in the post-mining and adjacent areas in Olkusz region, Poland, using remote sensing techniques on open-access satellite imagery data. The study uses nine Sentinel-2 images (2022-2024) and spectral indices (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) to identify and calculate the area of surface water and vegetation condition changes. Indices revealed a total water area of almost 400,000 m2 and a substantial vegetation cover decrease. Using selected indices on open-access data allows the detection of surface water bodies and can provide preliminary results of spatio-temporal analysis of environmental changes in selected post-mining area.

Roads, bridges, railways, poles, and power lines are one of main elements of technical infrastructure. Their proper condition is essential for ensuring people, goods, and electricity transportation. Inventory is a crucial process for maintaining the health of technical infrastructure. Conducting inventory with traditional surveying techniques, such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) or trigonometry, is both time and money consuming. In recent years, modern remote sensing techniques like LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and aerial and ground based imaging have been employed for inventory purposes. These methods enable data collection over large areas, reducing both the time and cost of measurement processes. Data from these devices is often processed in conjunction with artificial intelligence algorithms that assist in processing large data sets. This paper aims to introduce deep learning (DL) algorithms for inventory purposes using object detection with utility poles as a case study. The research was conducted using empirical data. A key element in training a DL model is the optimal selection of hyperparameters. During the study, ten models were trained, and their performance was compared based on selected metrics. For this study, a dataset of 1,736 original utility pole images was used. To augment the data, new images were created through rotation and mirroring. The best model achieved the following results: Precision = 98.82%, Recall = 97.29%, F1-score = 98.05%, mAP50 = 97.92%, mAP75 = 89.93%. The performance of the model gives a solid base for further implementation of DL object detection techniques for inventory of technical infrastructure.

Quantum computers with hundreds of noisy qubits are already available for the research community. They have the potential to run complex quantum computations well beyond the computational capacity of any classical device. It is natural to ask the question, what application these devices could be useful for? Land use and land cover classification of multispectral Earth observation data collected from the earth observation satellite mission is one such problem that is hard for classical methods due to its unique characteristics. In this work, we compare the performance of several classical machine learning algorithms on the stilted re-labeled dataset of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, when the algorithm has access to projected quantum kernel (PQK) features. We show that the classification accuracy increases drastically when the model has access to PQK features. We then naively study the performance of these algorithms with and without access to PQK features on the original Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission data set. This study provides key evidence that shows the potential of quantum machine learning methods for Earth observation data.

Failures of tailings dams represent a critical environmental hazard, releasing mining by-products that cause long-term damage to nearby ecosystems. This research presents a detailed analysis using remote sensing techniques of the 2003 Sasa tailing dam disaster in North Macedonia. By utilising Landsat 5 imagery and Google Earth Engine (GEE), multiple spectral indices — including the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalised Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI), Modified NDWI (MNDWI), and a turbidity proxy — were integrated to examine the immediate and spatial impacts on vegetation health, soil moisture, water presence, and sediment levels. The findings indicated significant ecological fluctuations along the river path, including vegetation stress, changes in soil moisture, water pooling, and turbidity. These effects displayed spatial gradients, diminishing further from the contamination pathway and forming distinct zones of influence. Certain intermediate areas showed anomalous disturbances, where sediment and hydrological changes impeded vegetation recovery. Pixel-level, buffer-based, and zone-based analyses - combined with Z-scores and correlation studies — revealed a complex post-disaster landscape. Weak correlation with topographic features suggested that localised conditions, rather than large-scale gradients, governed short-term ecological recovery. The study provides a framework for integrated, multi-index and multiscale environmental impact assessment, contributing to improved remediation strategies, disaster response planning, and sustainable management of post-mining landscapes.

This study presents a cost-effective tree crown segmentation framework using a hybrid deep learning model that combines a ResNet-34 encoder with a U-Net decoder. Our approach operates on low-resolution RGB Digital Orthophotos (DOPs) collected from urban and peri-urban areas in Bochum, Germany, simulating real-world data constraints. We processed 450 orthophoto--mask pairs through a comprehensive preprocessing pipeline including resizing (from 20000×20000 to 256×256), augmentation, and noise simulation. The model was trained using 10-fold cross-validation, achieving a Dice coefficient of 0.8678, Intersection over Union (IoU) of 0.7754, precision of 0.8410, and recall of 0.9103. These results demonstrate that even with downsampled imagery, reliable segmentation of tree crowns is feasible, making our approach suitable for low-cost forest inventory and precision agroforestry applications. Unlike previous studies relying on high-resolution LiDAR, this work is among the first to show robust tree crown segmentation using low-resolution orthophotos, making it accessible for widespread use in resource-constrained settings.
