Purpose: The aim of the paper is to assess the investment risks associated with foreign direct investment in the Opole Voivodeship from 1991 to 2024. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology combines quantitative analysis, using statistical data (e.g., GDP growth, inflation, exchange rates, and FDI inflows), with qualitative methods, including case studies of key enterprises with foreign capital in the region. Findings: The research identifies several factors that initially deterred FDI in Opole Voivodeship, including macroeconomic instability, competition from larger agglomerations, and socio-political sensitivities. Research limitations/implications: The study is region-specific, focusing on Opole Voivodeship, which may limit the generalisability of findings to other regions with different socio-economic contexts. Practical implications: The study emphasises the importance of leveraging local diaspora networks and cultural ties to attract capital while diversifying the sources of foreign investment to mitigate risks associated with investor monoculture. Social implications: The research underscores the role of socio-cultural factors, such as historical ties and community acceptance, in shaping investment dynamics. Originality/value: This study contributes to the relatively underexplored field of regional FDI determinants in Poland.
Purpose: The aim of the article is to identify foreign direct investments in the Visegrad Group countries against the background of selected rankings measuring the parameters of the competitiveness of economies. Design/methodology/approach: For the study identifying foreign direct investments in the Visegrad Group in the context of its international competitiveness, a literature query was carried out using the Scopus database. Additionally, using the VOSwiewer programme, keyword links of articles related to the subject under consideration were presented. Next we based on information obtained from statistical sources published by institutions dealing with the identification of international capital flows, as well as international competitiveness: the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, World Economic Forum, World Bank, Heritage Foundation, Legatum Institute. This study uses a variety of methods, such as statistical and economic analyses, comparisons, analogies, synthesis, the method of measuring and aggregating data, and the tabular method. Findings: The results of this study indicated that the Czech Republic and Poland are the most competitive countries among the Visegrad Group. They also absorbed the highest capital in the form of FDI in the analysed period. It was due to their macroeconomic stability, high productivity of labour resources, innovation capability, and, in the case of Poland, market size. Practical implications: The results of the study might have practical applications in decision-making processes regarding the choice of business location in the Visegrad Group countries. Originality/value: Although the topic of foreign direct investment in the Visegrad Group countries has been discussed in the available literature, there is only a few studies conducted in the context of the international competitiveness of these countries.
This paper examines the effects of foreign direct investments (FDIs) on economic development and the transfer of knowledge and technology (technology spillover) in developing countries, specifically focusing on the Republic of Serbia. The analysis is based on a comparative review of EU countries and Serbia in terms of statistical data on R&D activities and patent applications. The study synthesises existing research and proposes a methodological framework for future empirical studies. Findings indicate that technology spillover - horizontal and vertical - has not yet reached the desired levels in Serbia. Despite the presence of FDIs, the anticipated improvements in domestic innovation and technological advancement remain limited. This study contributes to the literature by contextualising technology spillover in Serbia and identifying gaps in its realisation. It also provides a foundation for future research on the mechanisms by which FDIs influence domestic enterprise performance and national economic development. The paper offers insights for policymakers and business leaders seeking to maximise the FDI benefits. It suggests the need for strategic policies to enhance technology transfer, support domestic R&D, and foster stronger linkages between foreign investors and local firms to accelerate economic development.
Purpose: The chapter focuses on presenting the state of research and indicating the emerging trends and gaps within the topic of Chinese outward direct investments. The acquired bibliographic data was presented in the form of maps of term clusters and word clouds appearing in the titles and abstracts. Design/methodology/approach: A recently published work indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases was used as the basis for a systematic literature review. Findings: Emerging trends and research gaps related to the terms Africa, host country, corruption, institutional quality, Pakistan, and Belt, relating the topic of Chinese ODI with the Belt and Road Initiative and sustainable development. Research limitations/implications: The reliance on two databases and the specificity of SLR - subjective selection of watchwords. Value: The text introduces the characteristics of Chinese foreign direct investments and indicates two groups of trends within the researched issues - considering the aspect of popularity and novelty.
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to identify the potential investment attractiveness of Poland's voivodeships in the context of the real estate market, and to compare this attractiveness with the actual attractiveness, i.e. with the opinions of enterprises regarding the determinants of making an investment in a particular location. Design/methodology/approach: The measurement of the potential investment attractiveness of Poland's voivodeships in the context of the real estate market was made on the basis of secondary data derived from reports of the Central Statistical Office, the Bank of Local Data and the Polish Investment and Trade Agency. The identification of investment attractiveness was made on the basis of the numerical values of the synthetic index. Thus, four classes of voivodeships (A, B, C, D) were distinguished. The study of actual investment attractiveness was a primary survey and was conducted in two stages in the second half of 2022. The survey used proprietary research tools. To the first – expert survey, enterprises operating in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region and entities representing the business environment were invited. In turn, the second stage of the research procedure covered the full set of enterprises with foreign capital, based in the voivodeship. Findings: The highest level of potential investment attractiveness in the context of the real estate market (class A) is characterized by 8 Polish voivodeships: łódzkie, lubelskie, kujawsko 28 pomorskie, opolskie, wielkopolskie, śląskie, dolnośląskie and podkarpackie. A study of real investment attractiveness conducted among companies that have placed capital in Kujawsko 30 Pomorskie Voivodeship confirmed the importance of location factors related to the real estate market. In the ranking of factors influencing investment attractiveness, the described characteristics of the real estate market received high marks. Research limitations/implications: Due to the variability over time of the determinants of business location choice, studies to identify them should be conducted successively. It should also be noted that due to the variability of assessments of investment attractiveness determined by the specifics of businesses, it is reasonable to take into account its types in future studies. A serious problem is the limitations in access to data, as well as the growing reluctance of entrepreneurs to participate in surveys.
Purpose: The aim of the article is to identify the spatial differentiation in the inflow of foreign capital to individual voivodeships, with a particular focus on Opole Voivodeship. Design/methodology/approach: On the basis of data obtained from the Bank of Local Data (Chief Statistical Office, GUS), an analysis was conducted with reference to the spatial differentiation and its changes. Findings: In the past three decades, the capital invested in the form of Direct Foreign Investments in Opole Voivodeship has displayed the following clear-cut characteristics: dominance of German capital, branch and spatial concentration, tendency toward consolidation of foreign ownership. Research limitations/implications: The analyses of the spatial differentiation in the inflow of foreign capital are limited due to availability of statistical data. Practical implications: The results can provide a useful suggestion as for further research and analyses relating to diversification of regional policies intended to make optimal use of socioeconomic and spatial factors. Social implications: The results of the analysis of the spatial differentiation in the inflow of foreign capital support the conscious formation of the process of societal development in voivodeships within the framework of the general socioeconomic policy. Originality/value: The analysis carried out can offer a starting point for further deepened studies on determinants of locating foreign investment in Opole Voivodeship.
Purpose: The aim of this article is to present the determinants of choosing the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship for FDI capital investments, their hierarchy of importance and the changes in this regard over the past two decades. Design/methodology/approach: This article presents the results of four original research projects, resulting, inter alia, in identifying determinants for choosing the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship as a capital investment destination in the form of FDI. The first was conducted in 2003-2004, followed by two in 2011-2012 and 2014-2016 and the last in 2022. The same survey methodology was used in each project with an original survey questionnaire. Findings: The results of the studies indicated that the greatest advantage of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship is its geographical location. In all four studies, the determinant 'qualifications of the workforce' ranked high. Determinants of the 'efficiency' subgroup belonging to the 'economic' group of factors were also important. This is mainly related to prices in the property market. The results of the studies also indicated that the determinants related to business conditions created by local authorities and the local community show increasing importance. Practical implications: The results of the presented studies could be used by local authorities in the creation of tools to support the development of entrepreneurship. The development of this area is a basic condition for the realisation of the expectations of local communities in the material and social sphere. Originality/value: The article presents the results of studies conducted using the same methodology in four sub-periods during the 20-year period. The value of originality is, in particular, the identification of changes over time in the main FDI determinants in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship.
The purpose of this study is to explore how foreign direct investment (FDI) enhances regional economic resilience, particularly during economic crises. Using a comparative approach, the study analysed the responses of foreign-invested entities versus domestically funded entities during the 2020 pandemic crisis. Findings reveal that, while both groups experienced investment and revenue declines, foreign-invested entities showed significantly less contraction and demonstrated stronger post-crisis growth, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This indicates that FDI presence bolsters regional stability and adaptability in the face of economic disruptions. Limitations include a focus on a single crisis event, suggesting further research across varied economic conditions. Practical implications highlight FDI’s potential in policy strategies aimed at building regional resilience. The study contributes original insights into FDI’s role in economic stabilisation, offering value to policymakers and regional development stakeholders.

The proposed research aims to examine The Impact of Natural Resources and Foreign Direct Investment on Eco-nomic Growth in Algeria during the period 1970-2021 and compare it with the Saudi economy, which is considered the closest economy in terms of natural resources. Analyse the factors influencing economic diversification and innovation. The research seeks to understand the impact of natural resources, including oil and gas, on the Algerian economy and study the factors influencing sustainable development and economic diversification. This research employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The findings suggest that, in total, there is The Impact of Natural Resources and Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth in Algeria during the period 1970-2021. The positive correlation between resources and economic growth highlights resource extraction's role in Algeria's economic development. It underscores the need for diversification to reduce dependence on commodity markets. The research focuses solely on economic factors, neglecting social and political dynamics. Limited data availability may constrain the depth of analysis, potentially overlooking nuances in the relationship between natural resources, FDI, and economic growth. The findings offer insights for Algerian policymakers to develop strategies for sustainable economic growth, emphasising the need for diversification beyond natural resources. Recommendations may inform policy decisions aimed at fostering innovation, reducing dependency on volatile resource sectors, and promoting environmental sustainability.
This study explores the impact of trade openness and foreign direct investment on CO2 emissions in the MENA region, providing new insights through the Panel ARDL regression. It aids policymakers in balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability. The study employs a Panel ARDL regression model to analyse the dynamic relationship between trade openness, FDI, and CO2 emissions. The study finds robust long-run relationships between Trade Openness, FDI, electricity uses and CO2 emissions, while trade openness reduces emissions. Short-run coefficients vary, with electricity use and growth significantly increasing emissions. The Error Correction Term confirms equilibrium restoration, with 23% of deviations corrected annually. FDI-driven industrial activities and fossil fuel reliance are key contributors to emissions, highlighting the need for cleaner energy sources and stricter environmental policies to mitigate climate impact. The findings guide policymakers in balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability, emphasising the need for cleaner industries, stricter regulations, and investment in renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions in the MENA region. This study adds value by providing new empirical evidence on the dynamic impact of FDI, trade openness, and economic factors on CO2 emissions in the MENA region using the robust Panel ARDL model.
Purpose: The article aims to analysis the essence of multinational entrepreneurship, the main currents of research conducted in this field, and in the context of the crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, which creates both economical barriers and opportunities for multinational companies, as well as to present the role of these enterprises in the economies' reconstruction. Design/methodology/approach: The article reviews national and foreign professional, scientific publications concerning economical aspects on multinational entrepreneurship and conducted an analysis based on economic data on the situation of multinational companies, as well as the flow of FDI, including the OECD, International Group of Chambers of Commerce (IGCC) and Global Entrepreneurship Monitor databases (GEM). Findings: The conducted literature and empirical studies allow us to conclude that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on multinational entrepreneurship, including changes in the activities of enterprises and attempts to adapt them to the changing and uncertain environment. The first response to the crisis for international companies is their use of available resources, followed by transformations of supply chains or changes in business models. Regarding multinational companies, the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic can be interpreted not only in terms of threats but also opportunities, as crises may also contribute to the creation of new opportunities for their development. Research limitations/implications: The COVID-19 pandemic and numerous blockages in economies worldwide have created a unique situation that does not yet have a solid theoretical grounding in the economic literature on multinational entrepreneurship (context of the emergence of a crisis), which is a challenge for researchers. Research should also use innovative research methods to a greater extent, i.e., internationalization of complex systems, visualization, computer simulations, and experiments. Practical implications: Regarding empirical research, it is worth noting that it is difficult to decide here to what extent the indicated changes are permanent. Hence there is a need for further research in this area. The existing assumptions concerning the business environment, the theory of internalization and patterns of multinational entrepreneurship, and the relations and connections between multinational entrepreneurship and international views of business and entrepreneurship also require re-analysis. Social implications: The role of international enterprises in the reconstruction of national economies was pointed out. Originality/value: The focus was on the cognitive aspects related to changes in the area of international entrepreneurship, relating to FDI flows and crisis trends caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly due to the fact that in international business research this area of research often abounds in ambiguous conclusions.
Purpose: The objective of this paper is to present Chinese investment flows and the nature of participation, to analyze the differences between host countries, and to identify the determinants of Chinese FDI in Poland and the Czech Republic. Design/methodology/approach: Comparison of the specifics of Chinese direct investments in Poland and the Czech Republic. Findings: The nature of Chinese investment in Europe is changing. After years of being dominated by mergers and acquisitions, Chinese investment in Europe is now more focused on greenfield projects. In 2021, greenfield investments reached €3.3 billion, the highest ever recorded, and accounted for nearly one- third of all Chinese FDI. More recently, the volume of Chinese FDI in Europe has reached the level of European FDI in China (now constrained by restrictions and risks). It matched the level of FDI by Chinese companies in the United States before declining over the past two years, generally due to Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. Chinese economic presence in Europe can be divided into three areas based on size, destination, and type of acquisition: The core of Europe is formed by the three major target countries (Germany, UK, France), where more capital-intensive investments are made, followed by other Western European countries (EU-15). The new member states (NMS), which joined the EU in 2004, 2007 and 2013, as well as the Western Balkan countries in the process of accession, are associated with China in the 16+1 format (with the exception of Kosovo) and form another gateway to Europe. Due to fewer market opportunities, they receive less direct investment, but China is building infrastructure (ports, highways, railroads) - segments of the Silk Road that will bring Chinese products to mature EU markets (Richtet, 2019). It is unlikely that Chinese investment in Europe will recover in 2023. The Chinese government is expected to maintain strict capital controls, financial retrenchment, and Covid-19 restrictions. The war in Ukraine and the expansion of regulations to monitor and control Chinese investments in the EU and the UK will cause additional difficulties. Originality/value: The article could be an attempt to answer the question of combining macroeconomic and institutional factors to better understand the internationalization of firms (Dunning, Lundan, 2008). There is no doubt, that the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine made it necessary to deepen the study of the phenomenon of FDI, its inflows, determinants, and related challenges in a turbulent world.
This study investigated the nexus between environmental pollution measured by carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (N2O) and net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), along with some other variables, namely economic growth by gross domestic product per capita, trade openness, manufacturing, political stability, urbanization, and population growth, using annual data of 11 countries from Southeast Asia for the period from 1999 to 2019. After testing the suitability of the fixed effects and random effects model, this study used the former. The results show that FDI inflows cause CO2 levels to increase in Southeast Asia, supporting Pollution Heaven Theory. However, as for N2O level, the result is not significant, meaning that there is no relationship between FDI inflows and N2O level. Other variables, including GDP and trade openness, negatively affect the environment in Southeast Asia as well. Some recommendations for the Southeast Asia government are also provided to improve the environmental condition in this region.

This study investigates the relationship between FDI, economic growth and financial development in the Next 11 countries. An analysis of the results was performed accordingly on the panel data gathered from the Next 11 countries from 1985 to 2019 - using the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimation method and the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model approach (ARDL). The results indicate an impact of both economic growth and financial development on the FDI flows to the study of countries during the period between 1985 and 2019 in the long run, while no such proof is affirmed in the short run. This study’s contribution provides a better understanding of the dynamic relationship between FDI, economic growth, and financial development by providing decision-makers to understand the nature of the dynamic association between the study variables. This study provides empirical evidence about the association between inflows of FDI, economic growth and financial development within the context of the Next-11 countries. The previous literature lacks empirical study on the relationship between variables of study for the Next-11 countries.

The unbalanced growth of FDI in China has seriously affected the coordinated development of China’s regional economies. Therefore, to achieve comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development, China’s main strategic task is determining how to adopt positive and effective FDI policies to reduce this regional imbalance in FDI. The purpose of this paper is to explore and study the spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) on China’s sustainable development. In this paper, based on the new political economics theory and overflow effects, comparative research and statistical research methods are adopted that combine static and dynamic analysis. Empirical research methods are combined with normative research to analyse the spillover effects of FDI on China’s sustainable development, particularly under the new situation of global crisis and the accompanying difficulties, to determine how to promote China’s FDI and the development of China’s sustainable progress strategy. The study found that in 2018, FDI in China reached a value of 13.466 billion US $, and the year-on-year growth in FDI in recent years has been basically stable at approximately 4 %. Asia is the main source of FDI in China. In 2018, the amount of FDI in Asia reached $109.1938.7 billion, accounting for 83.33 % of the total investment. Hong Kong, with its unique advantages, accounted for 72.12 % of FDI in China. FDI inflows are mainly directed to primary industry and the service sector, and the growth rate of foreign investment in 2016 in these sectors was 68.52 and 170.77 %, respectively, compared with 2007. FDI also mainly flows to the eastern region of China. By the end of 2018, the amount of foreign capital utilized in the eastern region reached $1,622.9 billion, representing 85.4 % of the aggregate FDI in China. The effect of FDI on China mainly focuses on three areas: economic growth, social development and environmental protection. FDI has brought positive spillover effects to China’s sustainable evolution, but with China’s continuous development, especially the change in its economic development mode, it has been consistently exposed to negative spillover effects
