Cyfrowy bliźniak stanowi jedno z kluczowych pojęć Przemysłu 4.0 i 5.0, oznaczając dynamiczny, stale aktualizowany model rzeczywistego obiektu, zasilany danymi pomiarowymi oraz wspierający podejmowanie decyzji technicznych. W ostatnich latach koncepcja ta znalazła szerokie zastosowanie w lotnictwie, motoryzacji i energetyce, natomiast sektor opakowań z tektury falistej dopiero rozpoczyna wykorzystanie podobnych narzędzi.

The digital twin is one of the key concepts of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, referring to a dynamic and continuously updated virtual representation of a real object, supported by measurement data and used for engineering decision-making. In recent years, this concept has been widely adopted in aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors, while the corrugated packaging industry is only beginning to explore similar solutions. This paper discusses the feasibility of implementing a digital twin for corrugated board packaging, covering the entire product life cycle: structural design, manufacturing, storage, transport, use, and recycling. The study presents the main data sources required for such a model, including material parameters of paper constituents, flute geometry, climatic conditions, load history, and production-line data. The role of numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and IoT systems in continuous model updating and in predicting strength, durability, and failure risk is also discussed. Particular attention is given to the rapid assessment of humidity effects, warehousing conditions, and raw material variability on packaging performance. It is concluded that a full digital twin of corrugated packaging is already technically feasible; however, its industrial implementation still requires data standardization, integration of production systems, and simplified computational models suitable for real-time applications. In the future, this technology may significantly reduce costly physical testing, shorten development time, and improve material efficiency of packaging solutions.

The selection of the method of foundation of engineering structures in difficult geotechnical conditions requires a special analysis of the ground conditions, primarily in terms of the interpretation of the geotechnical parameters. Waste landfills are classified as atypical engineering facilities, so their design requires a more advanced analytical approach. The article presents a numerical analysis using the finite element method of the behavior of a waste landfill and the subsoil in connection with the planned expansion of the landfill area. The scope of the analyzes includes the assessment of geotechnical safety, including analysis of slope stability and displacements of the planned excavation and embankments surrounding the future municipal waste storage zone. The analyzes also took into account the proposed methods of strengthening the ground, such as columns made using the dynamic replacement method (DR) and gravel columns (SC), prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) and geosynthetic layers to meet the geotechnical safety requirements.

This study introduces a novel music-inspired hybrid optimization approach for simultaneous pre-stack seismic inversion, aimed at enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of subsurface property estimation. The proposed method, termed hybrid harmony search optimization (HHSO), combines the global search ability of harmony search optimization (HSO) with the local refinement efficiency of the quasi-Newton method (QNM). While HSO has shown effectiveness in global optimization, its convergence rate can be slow. The integration with QNM addresses this limitation by accelerating convergence and refining the inversion results more effectively. The HHSO algorithm is evaluated using both synthetic and real seismic datasets. For synthetic noise levels up to 30%, HHSO delivers significantly improved estimations of acoustic impedance ( Zp ), shear impedance (Zs), and density (p) compared to HSO and QNM methods. Application to real data also shows consistent improvements, with HHSO achieving higher correlations to well-log data (Zp = 0.91, Zs = 0.89, and p = 0.92) and reducing inversion errors from 1.4 to 0.25. Moreover, HHSO preserves the frequency content of the seismic signal more effectively, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of seismic data. When applied to full seismic sections, HHSO produces smoother and more continuous images of the subsurface, aiding in the identification of geological features such as layer continuity and sand facies zones. These findings highlight the potential of HHSO as a robust and efficient tool for seismic inversion and reservoir characterization, offering an optimal balance between global exploration and local precision.

Corrugated board packaging plays a central role in the protection and transportation of products across multiple sectors, including heavy industrial goods, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, and the rapidly growing e-commerce industry. Ensuring the mechanical reliability of packaging requires a multidisciplinary approach that spans from empirical design rules and semi-analytical models to advanced numerical simulations. While predictive models such as the McKee formula or its extensions provide a useful baseline for estimating box compression strength (BCT), significant discrepancies often arise between calculated and experimentally measured capacities. These deviations are strongly influenced by details that may appear minor – such as material anisotropy, local imperfections, adhesive bonding, or geometric irregularities of cut-outs and creases – but collectively determine the effective load-bearing capacity of the package. Furthermore, inaccuracies in folding, gluing, or assembly processes can lead to strength reductions far beyond the tolerance margins assumed in theoretical design. This article addresses selected material-structural features of corrugated board packaging that critically impact compressive strength. By analyzing both the methodological frameworks for strength assessment and the practical aspects of box manufacturing, we aim to bridge the gap between theoretical prediction and real-world performance, ultimately advancing the reliability of strength-based packaging design.

This article presents an integrated approach to the design of transport packaging that combines numerical modeling, advanced experimental diagnostics, and analysis of real-world logistics cycles. A key element of the methodology is the precise estimation of safety factors, taking into account climatic conditions (humidity, temperature), transport dynamics (vibrations, shocks), long-term storage (material creep and relaxation), and real palletization scenarios, including overhang and non-uniform loading. Particular attention is given to the impact of structural discontinuities such as perforations, hand holes, and cutouts, which are often omitted in empirical strength estimations. The use of sensors to record humidity, temperature, and acceleration, along with a carefully planned experimental program, enables calibration of numerical models that reflect the actual behavior of packaging structures. This approach makes it possible to optimize the selection of board grade and package geometry according to a specific logistics profile, leading to significant material savings without compromising transport safety.

Enhancing the thermal efficiency and operational stability of solar water heating collectors necessitates optimizing heat transfer and ensuring uniform heating of the working fluid. This study examines the impact of flow velocity and turbulence on heat exchange processes and temperature distribution within the ribbed tubes of a solar collector. The problem is significant for maximizing solar energy utilization and minimizing auxiliary energy losses. Based on a review of recent advances in thermal-fluid modeling, the study aimed to identify optimal flow regimes that balance heat transfer enhancement with energy efficiency. Numerical simulations were conducted using the finite difference method, assuming steady-state turbulent flow in a 1.2 m ribbed tube with a 0.02 m internal diameter, wall temperature of 360 K, and inlet water temperature of 300 K. Thermophysical properties of water were set at 330 K. Results showed that an optimal flow velocity range of 3–4 m/s ensured efficient heat transfer and minimized energy losses. At 3.5 m/s, the outlet temperature reached 348 K, while the heat transfer coefficient peaked at 520 W/m2·K. The uniform heating coefficient 𝑅𝑢 decreased from 0.0135 at 0.5 m/s to 0.0095 at 3.5 m/s, indicating significant improvement in temperature homogeneity. Ribbed surfaces enhanced the heat transfer coefficient by 25–35% compared to smooth tubes, even at moderate velocities. The study successfully implemented its objective and offered practical recommendations for optimizing the design and operation of solar thermal systems to ensure stable and energy-efficient performance.

This study investigates the influence of different finite element material modeling approaches on the mechanical response of a femoral bone segment under three-point bending. Four material variants, ranging from homogeneous isotropic to heterogeneous isotropic models, were analyzed to assess their impact on displacement and stress distribution. The results demonstrate that material heterogeneity significantly affects displacement magnitudes, with homogeneous models underestimating deformation compared to heterogeneous ones that better reflect cortical and cancellous bone properties. Stress distribution patterns were primarily governed by geometry and boundary conditions, though stress concentrations near supports were identified as potential numerical artifacts. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating bone heterogeneity and anisotropy in FEM for accurate biomechanical simulations. Future research should focus on advanced anisotropic modeling, nonlinear behavior, and physiologically relevant loading conditions to enhance predictive capabilities, particularly for clinical applications such as implant design and surgical planning.

Dumping waste on weak soil layers can destabilize the dump, compromising its capacity for material disposal. This study focuses on the stability of dumps placed over weak black cotton (BC) soil strata in central India, with an emphasis on assessing the effectiveness of rockfill trenches (RFT) in improving dump stability. A combined approach using nine limit equilibrium methods (LEM) and the finite element method (FEM) was employed for analysis. The results demonstrate that dump stability is significantly influenced by the presence of weak strata under both dry and wet conditions when the dumping height isincreased. The study also reveals that the factor of safety (FoS) can be enhanced by strategically placing an RFT near the toe of the dump. RFT width optimization for maximum stability was also carried out for increased dump height to 90 m. Moreover, the spatial arrangement of RFT beneath the dump can reduce displacement by 30–50%. The impact of RFT material properties on both FoS and displacement was examined, considering locally available materials. These findings suggest that careful design of on-site RFT dimensions can lead to substantial improvements in dump stability over weak soil layers.

The central region of India is abundant in fertile black cotton soil, and the presence of such weak floors in open-cast mines poses significant slope stability concerns for overburden (OB) dumps. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring safe mining operations and cost-effectiveness. Several coal mines in this region have experienced overburden dump collapses due to the weak soil foundation. To enhance slope stability and mitigate the heaving effect near the toe of the dump, this study proposes parametric research that explores the flattening of the overall slope angle of the dump, bench angle optimization, and various feasible dimensions for rock-filled trenches, respectively. Using two-dimensional numerical modeling with SLOPE/W and SIGMA/W software, analyzed the slope stability and load-deformation behavior of the OB dump at the New Majri UG to OC mine in the Wardha Valley coalfields of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL). The results demonstrate that flattening the overall slope angle, bench angle optimization, and constructing a rock-filled trench with an effective width and depth significantly enhance stability. Additionally, this study provides further remedial measures, such as implementing erosion control techniques, to prolong the dump's life and reduce the adverse effects of erosion. The comprehensive analysis and suggestions aim to improve the safety and durability of OB dumps in mining operations.

The paper addresses the problem of numerical modelling of sandwich panels exposed to fire temperatures. A complex spatial model is presented that takes into account the variation of material parameters with temperature. A cohesive interaction is defined between the panel layers, for which damage initiation and propagation criteria are provided. Thermal conductivity and radiation are also determined for this interaction and possible separation. In addition, support conditions simulating the experimental test conditions were defined. A combination of classical contact and point interactions using connectors is used for this purpose. The model is used to simulate fire exposure and compared with experimental results. The obtained results confirm that the model is suitable for predicting the general trend of panel behaviour during fire.

The paper focuses on the numerical modeling of the solidification process, with particular emphasis on the key physical phenomenon of heat transfer within the mold-casting system. This process is influenced by the presence of a gaseous gap, which introduces thermal resistance at the interface and affects the solidification rate. The numerical model is developed using the Finite Element Method (FEM), with separate spatial discretizations for both the casting and the mold. Additionally, the thermal expansion of these regions, caused by temperature-dependent volume changes, is accounted for. The model utilizes two distinct meshes to compute the evolving temperature fields. Heat exchange between the cast- ing and the mold is governed by boundary conditions linking the two regions. The solution is computed incrementally, with each region being solved independently at each time step. This paper describes the main assumptions of the mathematical and numerical models and presents the comparison of results of three simulation variants carried out using a custom- -built program.

The displacements and accelerations of the model elements have been analysed based on flat drop tests. The presented approach is the first step to eliminate the physical drop tests, which, while effective, are costly and resource intensive.

Erosion in the Mekong Delta in general and the coastal area of Tra Vinh province in particular is still happening. One of the direct causes of erosion is due to hydrodynamic factors. Numerical modeling is important in studying and analyzing hydrodynamic regimes in coastal and estuarine areas. The reliability of simulation results heavily depends on the accurate determination of input parameters, among which the roughness coefficient is a crucial parameter. In coastal and estuarine areas, determining the value of the roughness coefficient is challenging due to the complex topography and hydrodynamic factors influenced by the combined effects of waves, currents, and tides. This study aims to assess the impact of the roughness coefficient (Manning's M- inverse of Manning's n ) on simulation results using the MIKE 21/3 Coupled Model FM at the Co Chien Estuary - one of the main branches of the Mekong River. The results show that as the Manning number (M) increases, water level range and current speed rise, with M impact diminishing from the river mouth toward the sea. M notably affects spring tides more than neap tides, especially at tidal troughs and peak velocities. A Manning value of 40–50 provides reliable results. This study initially identifies a suitable range of Manning's M values for the study area, contributing to improving the reliability of numerical models.

Modern structural design practice relies heavily on the development of advanced computational models that serve as the basis for strength and stability analyses. A computational model, as a simplified and idealized representation of the actual structural system, should closely reflect the real behavior of the structure under the applied loads and adopted design solutions. This paper reviews essential aspects of modeling steel structures, with particular emphasis on the effects of geometric nonlinearity and structural imperfections. Differences between the first and second generation of Eurocode 3 in the field of global structural analysis are discussed, highlighting the increasing importance of aligning the computational model with the actual structural behavior. In the present study, only geometric nonlinearity is considered, assuming a linear-elastic material model. The aim of this paper is to identify key factors affecting the accuracy and reliability of analysis results in steel structures and to outline the limitations imposed by the adopted modeling assumptions. The presented considerations provide practical support for structural designers in making informed engineering decisions regarding the appropriate level of complexity in structural analysis.
