The paper describes the modeling methodology and computer software which presents the simulation of the pantograph behavior. It considers also the contact between pantograph and the catenary. For this purpose author used the Matlab-Simulink environment, which has developed the dynamic model of pantograph by the dynamic multibody model convention. The deformable model was built using the Hertz theory, which describes the interaction between pantograph and the catenary of the vertical contact system. Furthermore, model implemented the algorithm which calculated the strength of aerodynamic forces in the pantograph. It depends on the amount of the pantograph elevation and its driving speed. The numerical simulations have designated the force at the point of contact for certain driving conditions.

The article presents the application of the SPH method for the modeling of cutting composite bundles using a guillotine. For many years, the SPH method has been applied in the modeling of dynamic phenomena in which rapid strain and large deformations occur. The discrete model has been performed by combining the FEM and the SPH. The SPH method has only been applied for to the fragment in which the material separation during cutting appears. To verify the numerical results, experiments have been performed using a special test stand for the confirmation of the correctness of the developed model and the numerical simulations.

Purpose: Cutting sheets of various materials is a commonly used product finishing process in industrial conditions. If high quality of cut edges is required, defects caused by cutting on a guillotine make this process of finishing practically unsuitable. The Authors evaluated quality of plates after cutting in laboratory, on industrial guillotine and a rotary slitter, in order to specify a cutting method least disturbing to the product’s edge. Design/methodology/approach: Samples of multi-layered aluminium lithographic plates, divided by cardboard and paper sheets were cut in industrial conditions on a guillotine and a rotary slitter. A specially designed laboratory test stand was built, allowing measurements of forces and applying a vertical, controlled movement of the cutting blade. Surfaces of edges of the samples were examined with the use of a Scanning Electronic Microscope; results of these scans were compared and evaluated. Findings: Comparison of surfaces after cutting allowed drawing conclusions regarding methods causing minimum disturbances to the cut edges. The best quality of the cut edges was obtained on a laboratory guillotine test stand, applying a unique, vertical movement of the cutting blade. Research limitations/implications: Results of laboratory experiments should be continued and verified on larger scale in industrial conditions. Practical implications: If vertical cutters could deliver the same edge quality as rotary slitters, a substantial reduction of production costs can be expected as in many cases guillotines are far more efficient than rotary slitters. Originality/value: Vertical, controlled movement of the blade during cutting metal sheets offers substantial advantages to the finishing process compared to standard guillotine cutting. In all cases, when high quality of the edge surface is required, proposed vertical cutting combines high efficiency with simplicity of operations and assures high quality of the finished products.

Purpose: The aim of this paper was to check by three dimensional Finite Element Method simulations the possibility of existence the non-uniform deformation hypothesis as a cause of Ductility Minimum Temperature phenomenon (DMT) in CuNi25 alloy. The necessary information and mechanical properties have been collected during elevated temperature tensile tests and other research and analysis of microstructure changes in material after deformation at the range of DMT existence. Experimental results were compared with three dimensional finite element method (FEM) simulation. Design/methodology/approach: Numerous techniques were used to characterize properties of material: high temperature tensile tests, finite element method, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy. Findings: During the experimental studies the course of elongation curves has been determined. The stress in material after deformation at elevated temperature was analysed by FEM simulation. It has been confirmed the possibility of existence the inhomogeneous deformation hypothesis as a cause of DMT phenomenon. Practical implications: Understanding of material properties during high temperature deformation leads to selection of the appropriate production parameters and reductions of cost, helps to avoid destruction of material during production or operating. FEM simulations can help to reduce the costs of multiple destructive tests to determine material properties. Originality/value: FEM simulation and investigations of this CuNi25 alloy complete knowledge about mechanical properties of this material and help us develop correct parameters for more effective technologies for material production and exploitation.
The aim of this paper is to develop a method for optimizing the design of a disc spring valve system by reducing the aeration and cavitation effect which negatively influences the performance of a shock absorber. A fluid structure interaction (FSI) model is used in order to modify the geometry of the valve interior and, in turn, to achieve better performance of a shock absorber. The paper analyzes the pressure distribution along theflow paths inside the valve cavity to reduce the risk of aeration and cavitation, while other important engineering aspects are omitted, e.g. durability of disc-spring valve systems as discussed in [1]. A key measure of valve improvement was chosen as deterioration of the damping force level generated by a shock absorber vs. the number of cycles during continuous cycling of the damper . The objectives of this work are as follows: (i) to present a process for reducing the complexity of the geometry of a disc spring valve system in order to perform a combined fluid-structure simulation, (ii) to show keysteps of the simulation process focusing on interactions between fluid and structure domain and to review relevant simulation results, (iii) to describe practical aspects of the simulation process, including basic parameters and boundary conditions related to the applied commercial software, (iv) to make an optimization case study to show the application scope for the simulation methodology proposed in the paper, and to confront the simulation results with experimental investigations.
Noise concerns in shock absorbers can be divided into two categories. The first is fluid flow noise, or “swish noise”, caused by the oil being forced through openings in the valves. The type and temperature of the oil, its velocity and the orifice geometry all have an effect on this. In addition, the structural design of the shock absorber shell may either reduce or amplify the noise. The second type of shock absorber noise is often described as regular operational noise or “chuckle noise”. It can be observed in vehicles during low-displacement, higher-frequency events, such as driving over a slightly rough road. This effect measurable as a force discontinuity into the vehicle and can come from a number of sources in the shock absorber, e.g. hydraulic transitions. It is often traceable to the valve discs closing and opening, but can also be caused by cavitation/aeration in the oil and air being pulled through the valves. The work on noise improvement reported in this paper has been started using conventional shock absorbers to be extended and will cover in the future variable damping shock systems as well. The paper gives an overview about the configurations of a typical valve system including three basic regimes of operation, which correspond to the amount of oil flowing through a valve cavity. The aim of this work was to propose a finite element fluid flow model, which can be used in order to reduce the velocity of fluid flow through a cavity of a shock absorber valve. High flow velocity can cause high-content frequency vibrations and, in turn, audible noise. The model will be used for initial screening of new valve concepts and on the other hand to improve the currently use ones.

Malalignment of Total Knee Replacement prosthesis has been reported to limit the implant survival time. We hypothesized that this may be secondary to excessive stress occurring at the bone-implant interface, resulting from abnormal load transfer across the knee joint. In this study, we conducted Finite Element Analysis of a geometrical model of the knee joint after Total Knee Replacement with different axial alignments. The calculated stresses and displacements were significantly higher with varus knee malalignment than with the valgus one. The stresses are not high enough to pose a serious risk of a crack or a fracture but might be responsible for chronic pain reported by some patients. In cases where optimal implant positioning is not possible, slight valgus malalignment might produce better results than varus.
