Traditional manufacturing of solid rocket motor grains is constrained by challenges associated with the mechanical removal of the casting core. This study investigates a hybrid method that combines conventional propellant casting with 3D-printed soluble cores to overcome these manufacturing limitations and enable greater design freedom. Moulds were fabricated using FDM from materials including BVOH, HIPS, and ABS. After casting a propellant, these moulds were dissolved using compatible solvents such as water, limonene, or acetone. The ballistic properties of the resulting propellant grains, including burn rate and ignition delay, were evaluated in a laboratory-scale rocket motor test stand. The choice of solvent proved critical to propellant performance. While organic solvents resulted in reliable ignition, water immersion caused ignition failures, likely due to the leaching of the water-soluble oxidiser. A comparison revealed that grains produced via the soluble core method exhibited a slightly higher burn rate than conventionally manufactured reference samples across a pressure range of 20 to 70 bar. The 3D-printed soluble core method is a promising technique for fabricating complex SRM grains. However, its success is critically dependent on the careful selection of a compatible material-solvent propellant system to prevent chemical interactions that degrade ballistic performance, particularly ignition reliability.

The selection of the nozzle plug and the appropriate quantity of an incendiary composition is an important step in modelling the ignition process of a solid propellant motor. The aim of the research discussed in this paper was to develop a nozzle plug which promotes adequate pressure in the combustor, while ensuring safety and simplicity of installation on the nozzle. The widespread availability of 3D printing technology has significantly simplified and reduced the cost of fabricating complex geometries. The authors designed and tested more than a dozen different snap-on nozzle plugs in order to investigate the effects of the material, the direction of printing, the shape and number of snaps, the smoothness of the printed surface, the composition of the incendiary composition and the use of an additional hold-down feature. Tests were carried out on two test rigs equipped with features imitating a rocket motor nozzle, pressure measurement, temperature measurement, and a propellant fixture. The tests showed that the printed nozzle plugs only allow effective ignition of the solid propellant with additional attachment features applied and an incendiary composition in the form of a mixture of black powder and smokeless powder. The research used a low-smoke propellant based on poly(glycidyl azide) for fuel and ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizer with the addition of octogen.

Autorzy pracy zaprojektowali i przetestowali kilkanaście różnych zatrzaskowych zatyczek dyszowych, badając wpływ materiału, kierunku druku, kształtu i liczby zatrzasków, stopnia wygładzenia powierzchni wydruku, składu masy zapalczej oraz zastosowania dodatkowego elementu dociskowego. Do badań wykorzystano materiał pędny o zmniejszonej intensywności dymienia oparty na paliwie w postaci poli(azdyku glicydylu), utleniaczu chloranie(VII) amonu z dodatkiem oktogenu.

This paper presents the design and study of solid propellant rocket motors using a mobile test stand. The test stand allows the measurement of two primary rocket motor parameters: combustion chamber pressure and thrust. In addition, the measurement system is structured so that measurements other than those previously mentioned can be defined and implemented by the user. Each experiment is recorded with an industrial surveillance cameras system and a high-speed digital camera synchronised with the other data acquisition channels. So far, tests have been conducted on two different calibres of motor, each acting as the main motor in the rocket test platform. The tests confirmed the functionality of the described stand and its flexibility in adapting to users’ requirements.

Robotic arms for use aboard satellites continue to attract much research and development interest due to the vast range of potential applications, ranging from satellite servicing to debris removal. The challenges faced relate to the extent of the complexity of the system and the demands made. The Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Warsaw University of Technology, was engaged in research aimed at designing and constructing a robotic platform that was equipped with air bearings and operated on a granite table - thereby simulating 2D microgravity conditions. The paper describes the design process of the propulsion system for the platform, which is a new direction for cold-gas thrusters. The specific requirements regarding the propulsion system, solutions for design problems, and the measurement methods and instrumentation were covered briefly. These were followed by presenting the facility configuration, evaluation methodology, representative results of single-engine performance, and platform-propulsive module integration mechanism. Finally, on-board propulsion test results were presented in which a comparison of two maneuvers was given, namely, the realization of the same trajectory by the platform in two distinct robotic arm configurations.

The work completed and discussed in this paper was to determine the level of smoke generation intensity in a selection of solid rocket propellants developed to minimise the level of generated smoke. This is an important issue for the application of the developed low-smoke propellant in, for example, the sustainer motor of a rocket missile. Reduced smoke generation levels can help to significantly reduce the feasibility of enemy detecting rocket munition launch sites. The authors of this paper developed a test stand that quantified the smoke generation intensity in rocket propellants. The test stand setup, based on the scatter of a laser beam by smoke, measured the smoke generation intensity, including during the operation of a rocket motor. A rocket micromotor was used along with a test chamber to measure the intensity of the smoke generated. It was located directly behind the motor exhaust and provided three laser- photodiode measurement channels. Tests of the smoke generated during the combustion of black powder and a standard mixture of HTPB and AP at a ratio of 20:80 provided reference baselines for the smoke generation intensity tests on the developed rocket propellants. The authors determined the smoke generation intensity of the propellants based on ADN, HTPB, and GAP with various additives. The results produced made it possible to compare the tested materials and select the most preferable materials as measured by their low smoke generation intensity.

Stanowi to istotne zagadnienie w kontekście zastosowania opracowanego materiału pędnego o zmniejszonym dymieniu, np. w silniku marszowym pocisku rakietowego. Ograniczenie wytwarzania dymu może znacząco zmniejszyć możliwości wykrycia miejsca startu środków bojowych przez przeciwnika. Autorzy artykułu opracowali stanowisko badawcze umożliwiające otrzymanie wskazań intensywności dymienia rakietowych materiałów pędnych. Przygotowany system, oparty na rozpraszaniu wiązki światła laserowego w dymie, umożliwia pomiar intensywności dymienia m.in. w warunkach pracy silnika rakietowego. Zastosowano mikrosilnik rakietowy wraz z komorą badawczą układu pomiaru dymienia, umieszczoną tuż za wylotem z mikrosilnika, wyposażoną w trzy tory pomiarowe laser- fotodioda. Pomiary generowanego dymu podczas spalania prochu czarnego oraz standardowej mieszaniny HTPB z AP w stosunku 20-80 stanowiły poziomy odniesienia do porównania intensywności dymienia opracowanych materiałów pędnych.

Searches for test flight missiles are usually based on data collected and transmitted by the on-board telemetry system of the missile. If this fails, the chances of finding the missile’s landing site are significantly reduced. To provide an emergency solution, work has been undertaken to develop a search support system. Its role as a final control element is performed by an ejector using an explosive material capable of propelling loads containing devices which facilitate finding the missile’s touchdown point. The research conducted on the system included the selection of the mass of black powder required to perform the task, testing of the design solutions and measuring the ejection velocity of the loads. Four different amounts of black powder were tested. The results obtained showed some potential for the proposed solution.

The ignition of a propellant is one of the most important stages of a rocket motor operation, and so it is essential to provide the proper conditions for this to occur. The igniter used in such motors generates ignition gases, which increase the chamber pressure and temperature and initiate grain combustion. Hence, it is necessary to use a component which enables a sufficiently high pressure in the chamber for the combustion process to become fully developed and maintained. To this end, closures are used, which are pushed out of the nozzle once the required pressure is reached. In addition to ensuring proper ignition conditions for the propellant, they protect the grain from the adverse effects of e.g. weather (contamination, moisture). Proper selection of this component of motor reduces pressure accumulation time in the motor chamber, thereby improving the ignition characteristics, which in turn has a critical impact on the further combustion and performance of the motor. Experiments tested the adhesive bonding using 5 different adhesive types with the bonds being made at both room and increased temperature. For testing membrane, 3 materials were used: copper, brass and polypropylene, in which two thicknesses were tested: 100 and 200 μm. The results of the bonding showed high non-reproducibility and it was not possible to determine working pressure values with great confidence. However, for the membrane, the results were much more reproducible and a relationship was established between membrane diameter and its burst pressure, which may be put to practical use in tests or in micro rocket motor applications.
