Polish conservation doctrines use terms relating to ruin, most of which are undefined. Nineteenth-century conservation doctrines and the Venice Charter have long lost their relevance, and the restoration and reconstruction procedures of an architectural monument are still rare in Poland due to the fascination with 'permanent ruins'. Reconstruction as a response to the social demand for the care of monuments, refers to the possibility of contemporary use of a monument, and its value is not determined solely by the authenticity of the matter.

Dziewiętnastowieczne doktryny konserwatorskie i Karta Wenecka dawno utraciły swą aktualność, a zabiegi restauracji i rekonstrukcji zabytku architektonicznego są w Polsce nadal rzadkością z powodu fascynacji „trwałą ruiną”.
In Poland, most castles were destroyed as early as the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of numerous wars. In the following centuries, an unfavourable political situation or just economic considerations caused numerous demolitions. A significant number of castles disappeared, or functioned as ‘romantic ruins’. A few important castles were rebuilt in the 19th century, in the spirit of ‘historical revival’. In the 20th century, many of the most important buildings were rebuilt or even reconstructed from scratch. In most cases, the sites were rebuilt immediately after the end of the war, by people who knew the buildings from autopsy, before demolishion. For many years, castle ruins functioned in the Polish landscape as ‘permanent ruins’. After the fall of communism, reconstruction of some castles began at the beginning of the 21st century. The most spectacular example may be the ‘reconstruction’ of the castle in Poznan – one of the most important cities in Poland. It was rebuilt on the basis of poor iconographic material – no older than from the 18th century. However, a large part of city dwellers suport the fact that the former capital of Greater Poland had ‘reclaimed’ its castle. Another ‘reconstruction’ of recent years is the Bobolice Castle, praised by numerous tourists and heavily criticised by art historians and conservators. Contemporary castle reconstructions are becoming a worrying trend. It may, in future pose a serious threat to the authentic, substance of historical castle buildings.

The article is an attempt to recreate the oldest construction phase of the Książ Castle, which, due to the ambiguity of written sources and the enormity of the castle’s structural transformations, is a difficult task. The question of Książ’s origins is crucial both for explaining the origins of castles in the Sudetes, as well as for Książ’s role in the emerging Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor. The research discussed in the article focused on uncovering the oldest walls of the castle in order to recognize the materials used, joints and knots. Our research was carried out in many previously inaccessible places. As a result, it was confirmed that the main tower with the function of a bergfried with a deep starvation dungeon could have been built no earlier than in the last two decades of the 13th century. A completely new finding, however, was the observation that at the same time the perimeter wall of the upper castle and the North Wing were erected – a two-story building with a residential function. There was a brewing cellar beneath it, and the very size of the building indicates that the castle was intended to be a permanent princely residence. Also, the construction period of the South Wing was discussed in a new chronological context. Until now, it was considered the oldest after the main tower. Thanks to the architectural studies carried out, we can now state that the Southern Wing was the last stage of development because it was located on the outside of the perimeter wall, on a steep, inaccessible slope descending to the gorge of the Pełcznica River. Its towering body, reinforced from the slope with three buttresses, had the form of a keep. In the light of our research and the references from years 1290–1293 naming Prince Bolko I Severe as Lord of Fürstenberg Castle, it is possible to confirm the function of the upper castle of Książ as the residence of Prince Bolko I. Its monumental body became a manifesto of Bolko’s power over the duchy.

Omówione w artykule badania polegały na dotarciu do najstarszych murów zamku w celu obserwacji użytych materiałów, sposobu ułożenia kamieni, zapraw murarskich, styków i węzłów.
The Ronow Castle in Trzciniec near Bogatynia, associated with the noble Ronovci family, served as a key political and military centre in the region from the 13th to the 15th century, yet it remains poorly studied in Polish scholarly literature. This article presents the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in 2022. The scope of the study included archival research, critical analysis of previous studies, and examination of architectural remains and landscape features. The research combined traditional historical methods with modern spatial documentation techniques (ground-based photogrammetry and airborne LiDAR scanning). The study led to the functional division of the castle complex into four zones: the outer ward, outer fortifications, bailey, and main castle. Evidence of the site’s multi-phase development was confirmed, including remnants of defensive walls, communication systems, and cellars. In addition, new architectural elements were identified, such as a two-storey building located in the uncellared part of the castle. The findings also allowed for the verification of some earlier hypotheses, particularly concerning the construction of the outer defences and the supposed existence of a transverse wall with a projecting tower beyond the bailey. However, the precise chronological stratification of the complex remains unresolved. The article highlights the need for further research, particularly through geophysical and archaeological methods, to achieve a more comprehensive reconstruction of the history and architecture of Ronow Castle.

Zamek Ronow w Trzcińcu koło Bogatyni, związany z możnowładczym rodem Ronowców (Ronovci), odgrywał w regionie kluczową rolę polityczno- wojskową od XIII do XV w., pozostaje jednak słabo rozpoznany w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki interdyscyplinarnych badań przeprowadzonych w 2022 r. Autorzy artykułu wskazali na potrzebę kontynuacji badań, zwłaszcza z zastosowaniem metod geofizycznych i archeologicznych, w celu pełniejszej rekonstrukcji historii i architektury zamku Ronow.
Realizowane obecnie prace restauratorskie i budowlane przywracają założeniu pierwotny, gotycko-renesansowy wygląd.

The titular defensive complex belongs to one of the most intriguing and better-preserved Gothic knightly seats in Western Poland. Current archaeological and architectural research carried out on the site, focused on the defensive enclosure and tower, has changed many previous views on its history and phases of use. As evidenced by the available documents and the archaeological and architectural research, the origins of the castle date to the middle of the fourteenth century. The founders of the castle were probably members of the von Nechern family, and after 1419, it became the property of the Lusatian family von Warnsdorf. After the death of the last member of the Witków line of this family, the castle passed from one owner to another, and finally, abandoned after 1945, it suffered considerable damage. Current restoration work is recovering its original Gothic-Renaissance appearance.

The article examines contemporary architectural interventions at Helfštýn Castle in the Czech Republic, which il-lustrate an attempt to balance the preservation of historical heritage with the requirements of modernity. The castle, one of the largest in Central Europe, underwent a comprehensive restoration by the Czech architectural studio Atelier-r between 2017 and 2020. The work included structural stabilization, masonry repair, sandblasted glass roofing, and the introduction of modern architectural elements such as viewing platforms and pathways. The project was recognized for its creative ap-proach and won numerous awards, including “Building of the Year 2021” in the Czech Republic. At the same time, it gener-ated controversy, especially among conservation groups such as the Czech ICOMOS National Committee. Criticism included interference with the original historical substance, limited roofing exposing the ruins to deterioration, and the destruction of the building’s late Gothic elements. The article highlights the complexity of the dialogue between tradition and modernity in the context of heritage conservation. Helfštýn Castle has become a symbol of the search for a balance between preserv-ing authenticity and introducing contemporary functions and forms. The case study presented concludes on the challenges and opportunities of contemporary conservation, emphasizing the need for a delicate balance between preservation and adaptation of historical buildings.

Projekt zyskał uznanie za kreatywne podejście i zdobył liczne nagrody, m.in. „Building of the Year 2021” w Czechach.
After a tumultuous history, numerous ruins of fortified castles have survived in Poland. There is a large number of them in Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska. Today, the question whether to rebuild these castles or to leave them as 'permanent ruins', is a problematic one. This question also needs to be asked concerning the future fate of the grand magnate residence of Krzyżtopór castle in Ujazd, which has been considered a permanent ruin for many years. Do we want such a 'future' and fate for our monuments?

The subject of the paper are castles and palaces, entered in the register of monuments and located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, that have been adapted into contemporary hotels. The considerations cover entire residential complexes, including farm and ancillary buildings, as well as the surrounding parks and gardens. The time criterion was the operation of the hotel during the case studies period, e.g., the years 2019–2022. The oldest building discussed dates back to the 16th century, while the newest one dates to the early 20th century. The hotels were launched between 1996 and 2014. Depending on the stage of the work, appropriate research methods were applied. The most important included the analysis of source materials and interviews with the owners and employees of the studied hotels. Comparative, critical, and synthesis analyses were conducted to draw conclusions. The research involved visits to each property, enabling the collection of numerous photographs. Through a multifaceted analysis of previous adaptations in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, conclusions were drawn regarding the positive and negative aspects of converting castles and palaces into hotels. Based on these findings, recommendations were formulated that may be useful to researchers, conservators, designers, and potential investors. The most significant element of this study is its contribution to filling the knowledge gap on this subject. It is worth emphasizing that such actions not only enable successful business ventures but, most importantly, save castles or palaces, which are testimonies of the past, from destruction. It has been proven that the existing adaptations are examples of valuable architectural efforts aimed at the reuse of historical buildings along with their surroundings. They contribute to the creation of unique, multifunctional enterprises, characterised by a specific atmosphere filled with history and the genius loci of the place, tailored to the needs of contemporary guests.

Przedsięwzięcia należące do próbki badawczej uruchamiano w latach 1996–2014. Wykonano analizy porównawcze, krytyczne i syntezę w celu uzyskania wniosków. Badania obejmowały kilkukrotne wizyty w obiektach, dokumentowane zdjęciami. Przeprowadzono wiele analiz związanych z kryteriami typologii, procesem i zasięgiem adaptacji, lokalizacją poszczególnych stref pionów funkcjonalnych, głównymi atutami przedsięwzięć, a także syntezą wybranych cech hoteli. Poprzez wieloaspektową analizę dotychczasowych realizacji z terenu województwa dolnośląskiego wyciągnięto wnioski dotyczące pozytywnych i negatywnych aspektów przeprowadzonych adaptacji zamków i pałaców na hotele.
The development of civilisation and the changing needs of users have meant that most historic buildings have lost their original function and have begun to deteriorate as a result of lack of use. For this reason, structures preserved in the form of ruins require a comprehensive approach to solving their conservation, technical and architectural problems. The article presents the author’s method of analysing a ruined building, which takes into account a number of decisionmaking factors that form the basis for evaluating the structure and determining its further treatment. The proposed analysis is presented from the perspective of a conservationist and is intended to be a comprehensive compilation of knowledge about the monument. The author emphasises the significance of castle ruins as an important group of monuments that can provide a wealth of information about the history and culture of a site. However, there is currently no standard for analysing and collecting data that is crucial for the preservation of the site. The creation of such a document is therefore an extremely important issue.

W artykule przedstawiona została autorska metoda analizy zrujnowanego obiektu, która uwzględnia wiele czynników, będących podstawą do oceny obiektu i określenia dalszego postępowania.
The castle in Bautzen was built on the site of an older residence under the supervision of the royal mayor of Upper Lusatia, Georg von Stein, in the years 1483–1490. Its best-preserved element from those years is the gate tower, housing the chapel of St. George on the first floor. The façade of the tower turns towards the city with the collegiate church with a spectacular monument to King Matthias from 1486, shown not only as the ruler of Bohemia and Hungary, but also as an aspirant to the imperial throne. Emphasizing the majesty of the ruler was directed primarily towards the Bautzen chapter, which included clergy associated with the Meissen bishopric, whose center – Meissen – was closely associated with the Wettins. Their territorial ambitions in the Bohemian Crown were consistently limited by Matthias. The creation of such a unique monument to the ruler in public space, which in Central Europe has only precedents in the monuments of Emperor Frederick III in Wiener Neustadt and George in Prague, could also be related to the desire to demonstrate Matthias’s rights as the Bohemian king to the then virtually lost fief of the Bohemian Crown – Luxembourg. The last representative of this dynasty, Elizabeth of Zgorzelec, daughter of Jan Zgorzelecki, handed them over to the dukes of Burgundy, but after the death of the daughter of the last of them, Maria, in 1482, these rights were taken over by the Habsburgs, who were then in sharp conflict with Matthias. Ortenburg Castle glorified Matthias not only as a potential emperor, but also as a new David or Solomon. The castle tower was probably topped with a turret known from the "Tower of David" in Jerusalem. The architectural detail in the chapel also seems to be a discreet reference to oriental architecture. In the years 1520–1527, the top of the tower was changed and an attic with six pinnacle turrets was added. This number most likely referred to the union of six cities to which Bautzen belonged. The royal mayor of Upper Lusatia was then Prince Karol Minsterberski of Ziębice, who was expanding his castle in Ząbkowice Śląskie at that time. Its facades were also topped with an attic. In this castle, like in many others from that time, references to Jerusalem and Solomonic architecture were also found. The Ortenburg Castle in Bautzen should also be added to this list, despite the "redrafting".

W artykule przedstawiono zarys historyczny, zakres i rezultaty przeprowadzonych prac konserwatorsko-budowlanych zamku górnego w Iłży. Prace te obejmowały zabezpieczenie oryginalnych fragmentów budowli, podniesienie częściowo murów, odtworzenie zarysu pomieszczeń, a także wzniesienie tarasów widokowych na rzecz udostępniania zabytku dla ruchu turystycznego.

The article presents the historical outline, scope and results of conservation and construction works of the upper castle in Iłża carried out. These works include securing the original parts of the building, raising some of the walls, recreating the outline of the rooms, and erecting viewing terraces to make the monument available to tourists.
The article is an attempt at outlining the cultural landscape of Silesia in times of breakthrough, in the 2nd and 3rd thirds of the 12th century, which was seen through the prism of studies on the early patronage of the Silesian Piasts. The symbol of deep transformations – apart from colonization and rental economy – became the then brick architecture of Lombard genesis, which north of the Alps was connected with Italian aspirations and the imperial power of the Hohenstaufen’s dynasty (1154–1186). The purpose of this work is to present the genesis of the innovative brick eighteen-sided donjon of the princely castle in Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław against the background of the journey of Bolesław I the Tall (exile years: 1146–1163) as well as political, economic, and legal transformations which he initiated in Silesia in the first decades of melioratio terrae (rule years: 1163–1201). That time, which was initially dominated by the Piast conflict with magnates and then by the first successful economic and settlement experiments, preceded widely known in source literature huge architectural and urban investments of European momentum undertaken by his son Henry the Bearded (1201–1238). This work is based on archaeological and architectural research results and analyses of the selected existing tower objects, mainly European, as well as on historical sources. The brick Wrocław donjon is a manifesto of power of Prince Bolesław I the Tall returning from the exile who regained the main gords of the province with difficulty (1163/1166). Similarly to numerous early French and English towers, it was an innovative experimental building but it did not have any direct formal imitations. In the search for its genesis, it is appropriate to refer to Lombard brick models, among which Milan’s defensive walls, which were destroyed after a long siege in the years 1161–1162, can be of great importance. In 1163 Bolesław I the Tall returned to the country from a long exile and initiated a “brick breakthrough” in fragmented Poland. It constituted one of the stages of the great “brick revolution” north of the Alps, which was initiated by the Hohenstaufen’s Italian policy.

Ceglany donżon wrocławski to manifest władzy powracającego z wygnania księcia Bolesława I Wysokiego, z trudem odzyskującego główne grody prowincji (1163/1166).

The current Polish Law of July 19, 2019 on Ensuring Accessibility for Persons with Special Needs formulates requirements for all buildings, without differentiating them in terms of historic values. The purpose of the text is to draw attention to the problem of inconsistency between the requirements of the Law and modern principles of historic preservation. The general division of historic buildings adopted in the text in terms of their susceptibility to barrier removal is confronted with the example of the High Castle in Malbork, which is part of the castle complex (Malbork Castle Museum), listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ruins of the castle in Koło are one of the better-preserved examples of a stronghold from the times of Kazimierz Wielki in the lowlands. The building has been in a state of ruin since the 17th century. A prominent corner tower with a fragment of three curtains has survived to this day. The purpose of this text is to discuss the results of architectural and archaeological research carried out in the years 2019–2020 and the project of the castle’s partial protection. The analysis of the aforementioned research made it possible to state that the construction of the stronghold began with the residential tower in the northern part. Subsequently, a tower was built in the south-west corner. In the next few stages, curtain walls were erected, closing the courtyard. In the southern part there was a gatehouse. A different construction technique enables us to conclude that there were several workshops working on it, which used single-rack and overhang scaffolding. The condition of the ruins was so bad that it was necessary to arrange a project to protect parts of one of the walls, which was completed in 2020.
