In Silesian towns, especially those in the Sudeten foothills and the Sudeten valleys, the use of hip and half hip roofs became common in the 2nd half of the 18th century. Along with them, late Baroque crownings of townhouses appeared. They combined the decoration of a low half hip gable, sometimes called a half gable, or dormers with a wall, obscuring the roof of the entire building. As a whole, this structure formed an elaborate attic. The author’s aim was to show that both the spread of roofs of such shapes and the forms of attics resulted from the adaptation of the tastes and needs of city dwellers to the ordinances in force. Municipal and then state regulations for the construction of houses, especially their canopies, resulted primarily from fire regulations. The research presents the process of formulating ordinances relating to the shape of roofs, roofing materials and surrounding fire walls. The analysis of preserved monuments and iconographic records depicting the roofs and crowning of tenement houses erected after the introduction of successive regulations made it possible to trace the ways in which they were implemented. The prescription to lower gables, in addition to erecting low roofs, resulted in a compromise in the form of constructing mansard roofs and shortening the height of gables by introducing pediments. The regulations on the method of erection and the height of fire walls influenced the way in which the gables of townhouses were designed and thus the form of attics became widespread.

W miastach śląskich, przede wszystkim z Przedgórza Sudeckiego i kotlin sudeckich, w 2. połowie XVIII w. zaczęto powszechnie stosować dachy naczółkowe i czterospadowe. Nakaz obniżania szczytów, oprócz wznoszenia niskich dachów, zaowocował kompromisem w postaci konstruowania dachów mansardowych i skracania wysokości szczytów poprzez wprowadzanie naczółków. Regulacje dotyczące sposobu wznoszenia i wysokości murów ogniowych wpłynęły na sposób projektowania szczytów kamienic i rozpowszechnienie formy attyki.
The subject of the presented publication are fountains which appeared in the market squares of Lower Silesian towns in modern times. Apart from several 17th century and Renaissance water fountains, all of them were created at the turn of the 18th century until the 1830s, during the period of reconstruction after the damage caused by the Thirty Years’ War. The aim of this article was to determine, on the basis of analyses of forms and iconographic programmes of Silesian fountains, in comparison with analogous European examples, their role in shaping the urban composition of town squares and market squares and their commemorative message. As a result of the study, it was observed that initially, with the introduction of water features, spatial effects were arranged in a Renaissance manner, creating small concentrically composed units. Subsequently, Baroque layouts were introduced. First with short viewing axes forming urban interiors and finally with long composition axes running out of the depths of the streets and including numerous decorative views in shortened perspectives. Decorative fountains were included in the system of ordering and decorating the entire city. Dates, initials and sometimes whole surnames were used on fountains to commemorate benefactors, founders and caretakers of reconstructions of buildings and public facilities and waterworks. With the symbolism of depictions of the biblical dove and the mythological figures of Neptune, Triton and Atlas, like their European counterparts they became monuments of peace and signs of loyalty to the monarchy. Most of these investments can be linked to the two most prominent representatives of power in this period, Prince Elector Franz Ludwig von PfalzNeuburg and Johann Anton Gotthard Schaffgotsch.

XVIII w. Najpierw z krótkimi osiami widokowymi kształtującymi wnętrza urbanistyczne, a na koniec z długimi osiami kompozycyjnymi wybiegającymi z głębi ulic i uwzględnieniem licznych dekoracyjnych widoków w skrótach perspektywicznych. Ozdobne wodotryski włączone były w układ porządkowania i dekorowania całego miasta. Większość z tych inwestycji można powiązać z dwoma najznaczniejszymi przedstawicielami władzy w tym okresie biskupem księciem elektorem Franzem Ludwigiem von Pfalz-Neuburgiem i Johannem Antonem Gotthardem Schaffgotschem.
The surprising similarity between decorative motifs found in Rome, Versailles, Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna and Szczecin is worth taking a closer look at to see how they relate. The popularity of the iconographic motif depicting Fames blowing on trumpets grew significantly during the Baroque period. It was because of its visual attractiveness and explicitness. This motive was a clear sign of the founder's prestige. The sources of the formal similarities between the presented examples are discussed in this article.

A successful duo can be a recipe for a timeless success. Original connections help to save in the memory of generations. The area of art seems to be particularly susceptible to experiments with combining materials and forms, and bold statements often yield surprisingly positive results. The experiment breaking the binding rules was not a feature of the 20th century avant-garde, but was manifested in every historical period. A variation of this kind can be called a bold or even extravagant combination of glass and gold. Compilation of such extremely different materials was, became a synonym of luxury not only in the Baroque – an era of excesses and excess. The glass gilding technique have a very long tradition. Among them better known are “hot” fondi d’oro and “cold” verre églomisé. The genesis of these techniques can be sought for centuries, in the ancient era. This article covers only the overview of physical decorative procedures, both cold and hot. The author overlooks the chemical processes used in the production of glass, such as the use of colloidal gold, powders and gold compounds introduced into the glass mass, assuming that the subject deserves a separate study.

It is the surveyed measurement drawings of the Church of St. Francis Xavier that served as the pretext behind a discussion on the Jesuit complex in Kaunas (pol. Kowno) in the context of the Counter– Reformation and its impact on the functional–spatial and architectural shape of the city. The drawings were developed in 2013 as a part of a student work–study program conducted by the Department of Polish Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. The Counter–Reformation completely changed the face of the Roman Catholic Church. This found its reflection in the image of cities and took place when the Society of Jesus was established to confront the Reformation. It was tasked with changing the reception of the Church by the faithful. This was tied with an effort to become a part of opinion–generating groups as well as to mold the worldview and was to be achieved not only through its ministry, but also through education. It is for this reason that colleges were built in parallel to new Jesuit churches. It was there that teaching pursuant to study programs developed by the Society was provided at no cost. The approach to the faithful also changed in that they were provided with architecture to contemplate. This architecture was not intended to dominate and overwhelm, but to amaze and enchant through the wealth of its Baroque form. This is best seen in the interiors and façades of churches. The newly erected Jesuit complexes often required significant surface area. In addition to the church building itself they encompassed the college buildings: convent and school. They were introduced into existing cities, which meant that finding an appropriate site that was both strategically located and sufficiently representative was not easy. Success was achieved in Kaunas. The church was built ideally: It was built into the frontage of the market square, thus demonstrating the consistently strong and renewed face of the Roman Catholic Church. The Jesuit complex in Kaunas is also worth discussing in light of its interesting and multi–phase architecture, an excellent illustration of tendencies in the art of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the second half of the 17th century and the beginnings of the 18th. Of special interest in this context is the similarity in plan to one of the designs of Tylman van Gameren, without a doubt the most prominent architect of this era in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, which have survived to this day in the collections of the University of Warsaw Library Print Room.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań struktury budowlanej dwóch obiektów sakralnych z Oszmiany, miasta leżącego na historycznej Wileńszczyźnie, a obecnie w granicach Białorusi.

The paper presents the results of research into the building structures of two churches in Oszmiana (Ashmyany), a town in the historical Wilno (Vilnius) region, which is currently within the borders of Belarus. A whole series of relics was uncovered during the renovation work currently being conducted on the first of them—St. Michal the Archangel parish church. These remnants have made it possible to attempt to date the oldest masonry church raised in this location (most probably in the 16th century) as well as describe changes to its form over successive centuries. Defining the scope and state of the remnants of the older church embedded in the current neo–Baroque structure built at the beginning of the 20th century in line with a design by Wacław Michniewicz has also proved possible. The second presented structure is the former Franciscan church of which only ruins remain and which has, to date, been the subject of only fragmentary study. In its case it was possible to establish the approximate date of its construction (the beginning of the 16th century) and its later fate. Starting as a small late– Gothic church with a masonry chancel and timber nave, it is possible to define the scope of destruction caused by the Muscovite incursion of 1655, the form reconstructed after this catastrophe, all the way to its remodeling at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries that gave the church its final form. However, it should be stressed that in its assumptions, the paper is only a starting point for further research into these important though underappreciated elements of the architectonic heritage of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Lavra complex planning has been analysed and its compositional dominants have been determined.
This article is focused on considerations of taxonomic methodology of traditional historical design, and is a development of the article entitled "The geometry of domes." A basic parameter referred to in the analysis is the criterion of geometric complexity. On this basis every object was analyzed and classified according to the adopted category. The dimensions and construction material were also given. The practical use of the proposed method is illustrated in examples by the outstanding works of architecture such as: the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, the chapel of San Pietro in Montorio Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione at Todi, Il Redentore in Venice, Church of s. Ivo in Rome. Those selected objects are European provenience and come from the Renaissance and Baroque. According to the above parameters the table in which the individual structures were systematized was created. It aims to compare the changes taking place in the field of geometry, size and the way of constructing the objects. Analysis, which were made, lead to the obvious conclusion that each following geometric solution are is based on the existing achievements.

It is commonly considered, that baroque painting depicting architectural elements on face partitions of building in illusionistic way needed the painter to have deep knowledge of constructing perspective charts. Research conducted in Poland (in its current borders), according to the author, do not confirm this thesis. They show that our artists, most commonly used ready-made patterns from perspective tractates and pattern books, but most of all from tractate by unquestionable master of this kind of painting, the Italian Andre Pozzo (1642‒1709). The article it also presents the connection with selected paintings in Poland With baroque tractates and pattern books. Furthermore, comments on perspective rules education of baroque craftsmen and artists were included.

Po epoce wielkich katedr dopiero epoka baroku dała życie świątyniom wzbudzającym w widzu wielkie emocje i zachwyt, wprowadzając go w stan wzruszenia estetycznego.

After an era of great cathedrals, only Baroque gave birth to the temples that arouse great excitement and delight. Later, probably no era produced works whose great qualities of the visual and landscape value were based on the spatial location with such perfection. Baroque urban space has been determined by both: the center-to-center and the use of open form, addictive natural landscape in the whole composition in a so far unprecedented.

Analyses of style not always fulfill their role, however there is a question of describing characteristic features of forms and their historical determinants in researches on early moder art, including architecture. One of the most important feature of the ecclesiastical architecture in Rome of the seventeenth century is the way of creating space. Comparative studies of selected buildings like churches by Maderno, Borromini, Bernini, Rainaldi and Guarini, enable to perceive their architecture in the context of the processes occured in the culture of the epoch and see the common denominator which was the fascination of the question of infinity and relativity of perception of space by the „Man of baroque".
O miejscowych kolekcjonerach świadczą najlepiej liczne, drukowane katalogi aukcji publicznych, obejmujące nieraz wielkie biblioteki miejscowe. O roli miasta, zwłaszcza w pierwszej połowie XVIII w. świadczy to, iż najsłynniejsi polscy kolekcjonerzy, bracia Załuscy, wielokrotnie dokonywali zakupów w Toruniu i utrzymywali stałe kontakty z miejscowymi uczonymi, którzy pośredniczyli w bibliofilskich transakcjach.

W pierzejach stanęły kamienice o barokowych szczytach, a w późniejszym czasie budynki o układzie kalenicowym, tworzące zwarty ciąg zabudowy. Jednak najistotniejsze przeobrażenia przestrzeni rynkowej wprowadziły nowe elementy małej architektury - figury wotywne i fontanny. Przestrzeń rynków w okresie baroku pozostawała nadal przestrzenią funkcjonalną - placem targowym, nabierała jedynie dodatkowo pewnych form reprezentacyjnych. Nie została przedefiniowana, a jedynie uzupełniona wzbogacona np. o rozbudowane programy religijne.

This study is dedicated to discussion of changes in the baroque period (from the end of the thirty year war until Prussian times) referring to basic elements shaping the most important urban space of a Silesian town - the market-place. It attempts to answer the question to what extent these changes determined the creation of a new spatial values and predefined in a new manner the character of the square. The study considers the process of establishing the dominant form of the market-place - the town hall tower with a helm, which became the characteristic symbol presents in panoramas of almost all Silesian towns. The town hall building itself was also subject to changes, from the shape of a mediaeval castle to a municipal palace. The walls of the market square were also altered. Tenement houses with Baroque gables emerged in the frontage, and later on, gabled buildings creating a continuous border. However, the most important changes of this urban space were introduced by new small architectural elements - statues and fountains. Market-places remained functional spaces in the baroque period, but also gained some elegant forms. It was not redefined but only enriched, for example with extended religious programs.

Dekoracja architektoniczno-malarska kościoła uniwersyteckiego we Wrocławiu, dzieło Jana Jerzego Knolła i Jana Michała Rottmayra von Rosenbrun (1704-1706), otwiera cykl wielkich realizacji iluzjonistycznych.

The article draws attention to the achievements of the science of perspective in the decoration of Silesian temples, especially to the so-called illusory painting and interior architecture co-ordinated with it according to the concept of the Baroque unity of arts. Creators of monumental painting in Silesia in the 18th century used the laws of perspective fully, basing on the instructions of Andreas Pozza. The architectonic-painting decoration of the University Church in Wroclaw, the work of J.J. Knoll and J.M. Rotmayr (1704-1706) opens the cycle of monumental illusory works. Also, the programme of illusory decoration of temples was applied in the church in Krzeszów (A. Jentch, J.W. Neunhertz and J.A. Provisore, 1733-1735), in the church of the Benedictine nuns in Legnickie Pole (K.J. Dintzenhofer with mural painting of CD. Adams, 1733), in the church in Nysa (M. Klein(?) with paintings of the Scheller brothers, 1731) and in the Jesuit church in Brzeg (J. Frisch with mural paintings of J. Kuben, 1740-1746). The architectonic solutions of all the churches presented may be rated at a general European level. The most outstanding example is the temple in Legnickie Pole, with its sublimed architecture based on the composition of infiltrating elliptic spatial units. Not much inferior is the "developed architectonic system of the Krzeszów sanctuary, where the method based on the chain-like scheme of elliptic units has been used. Also, both earlier solutions deserve a high appraisal, i.e. both the classic creation of the interior of the Church of Jesus in Wroclaw, only partly dynamised, as well as the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Nysa of dynamised forms, with, to a large extent, centralised solution of the church's spatial area. The Church of the Holy Cross in Brzeg, the latest of the examples presented, despite the spareness of its interior possesses architectonic solutions of high quality. Their importance is mainly based on the application of illusory painting. The high grade of the stucco work, sculpture and above all painting is even better presented in these complex late Baroque solutions. Asam should be mentioned first of all, the creator of innovatory resolutions in the range of shaping the spatial area of the wall-paintings. The special rank of the polychromy in the University Church in Wroclaw should be underlined. Rottmayr was the first German mural painter who had the courage to apply the Pozza theories consistently. The other painters created less progressive compositions however, they presented not only the knowledge of European examples but also their own inventiveness in creating decorations of remarkable structural values. In the case of Kuben one should additionally admire such complex use of illusory perspective.

Gardens in Wroclaw, renowned far beyond Silesia, came into being as early as the 16th century. Later, 17th century realizations referred to the late-Renaissance trend popularized mainly by the treatises of Joseph Furttenbach. Considerable fame was gained by the water garden of Wolfgang Scharschmidt, which existed in the last quarter of the 17th century and was located in the area of the former garden of Lau-rentius Scholtz. Here, a variety of over one hundred so-called "water tricks" was found, their conceptions being taken from the treatises of Georg Andreas Bockler. In the 18th century this garden was changed, once again, by its new owners. According to the tendency in this period, Count von Lam-berg had the garden arranged in the manner of French solutions. Together with the garden of the Maltzan counts it belonged to the most imposing examples of Baroque gardens in Wroclaw. Due to restrictions resulting from lack of space within the town walls in the 18th century, numerous decorative gardens came into being in the suburbs. One of them was the garden of Caspar Wilhelm Scultetus, in the Świdnicka Suburbs. Apart from the gardens belonging to the burghers, imposing garden arrangements were found in suburban granges belonging to the clergy. The most imposing came into being in the fourties of the 18th century, by the summer residence of Cardinal von Sintzendorf. However, just as grand were such gardens as those belonging to the Canons Regular in Brochów, the Knights of St John of Jerusalem in Krzyki, and the Premonstratensians in Mokry Dwór. Unfortunately, none of these gardens have preserved to the present. Only rare descriptions and iconographie presentations inform us of their configuration.
