Content available Wytłoki owocowe od odpadu do surowca przyszłości
PL

Constantly developing branches of the food industry, increasing environmental pollution as well as the fashion for smart-, novel- and superfood, which appeared some time ago – force modern scientists to constantly look for new, most creative solutions for the effective management of waste as additives to food. functional food. What is waste in one factory may be avaluable raw material with high nutritional value in another. The current goal of food producers is completely waste-free production, using post-production waste as an enriching raw material for popular, widely available food products and being used for new food sources (e.g. edible insects), which can be used both as food – in itself, as well as a valuable feed additive.

Środowiskowa Ocena Cyklu Życia - LCA (Life Cycle Assesement) opisana w normach ISO serii 14000 stanowi jedną z najważniejszych i najbardziej wiarygodnych technik oceny oddziaływania na środowisko technologii i produktów.

Environmental Life Cycle Assessment - LCA described in the ISO 14000 series standards is one of the most important and reliable techniques for assessing the environmental impact of technologies and products. Currently, it has an established position as a research tool in areas of science and practice related to the environment. The impact of new or existing technologies and products on the environment is one of the key problems in the Member States of the European Union, where we strive to maximize material recovery and reuse of waste. It is technologically and economically justified to recycle waste or use it as secondary raw materials, as well as neutralize its waste at the point of generation. One of the innovative solutions is the chemical modification of polymer waste to obtain flocculants used in industrial wastewater treatment processes. Currently, an assessment of the impact of technological processes and by-products on the environment in their life cycle is being carried out. LCA analysis confirms the effective use of new polymers and, in the long run, their environmentally safe production. The examples presented make it possible to follow the procedure for assessing the impact of the life cycle of production technologies and products on the environment.

The particle size distribution of woodworking residues influences the quality of the biofuels made of these materials. Hence, it is essential to investigate the fractional composition of raw materials for pellet production. Tested materials originated from ten parquet manufacturing facilities located in western Poland. The research material consisted of uncontaminated oak (Quercus spp.) wood particles. The tested material had a moisture content ranging from 8.8% to 11.4% and a density of 210.7 ± 1.79 kg/m3. A sieve analysis method segregated the tested material into four distinct size fractions (<1.0 mm, 1.0-2.5 mm, 2.5-5.0 mm, and >5 mm). The average mass shares in these fractions were 53.72 ±0.51%, 35.14 ±0.27%, 9.59 ±0.36%, and 1.55% ±0.11%, respectively. The particle size distributions of wood particles generated in all the facilities demonstrate remarkable similarity. No substantial differences were observed in terms of tilt angle and calorific value. Factors such as variations in raw material species, geographical origins, density, humidity, and technological processes appear to have minimal influence on the sieve-size distributions of the generated sawdust. All these solid wood processing residues can undergo processing into high-quality solid biofuel production.

The Pb-Zn mineralization in the Cho Don - Cho Dien ore districts often occurs in 2 types: (1) oxidized ore near to the surface and (2) sulfide ore at deeper section. Based on microscopic observations, sulfide ores can be divided into sphalerite-galena-pyrite and/or galena-sphalerite mineralization types. To examine the geochemical features of the Pb-Zn ores, SEM-EDX and ICP-MS analytical methods were performed in this study. Previous δ34S data of Pb-Zn concentrates, and sulfide minerals from various deposits suggest that the Pb-Zn ore-forming fluids might be related to the felsic-granitic magmatic activities rather than a genesis of stratiform type. Geochemical data show that the major, minor, and trace element compositions of lead-zinc ores have wide ranges of variation even in each deposit. The sulfide ores are generally higher in economic components than those in the oxidized ores. The positive correlations between Pb-Ag can be found in the entire dataset, whereas excellent Zn-Cd correlation can only be observed from Cho Don ore samples. Apart from the principal components (Pb and Zn), the ores also contain other accompanying elements that supply high-technological manufacturing industries. Of which As, Cu, Ag, Sb, and Cd could be potential by-products and can be extracted during smelting Pb/Zn concentrate processes, and need more detailed studies for every deposit.

Również w 19 ankietowanych zakładach przetwórstwa ryb podczas produkcji i przygotowania do dystrybucji straty surowców i wytworzonych produktów były stosunkowo niewielkie i wynosiły w latach 2017 i 2018 odpowiednio 1,34 i 1,56%.

According to FAO data, 35% of the caught fish and sea foods, obtained by the fishing industry are lost. When estimating the food losses and waste, it is important to determine the limits of the food chain links and to define the losses and waste. As it is results from the conducted studies within the frames of the research PROM project, performed in 106 surveyed fish farms, the most frequently indicated losses included those coming during the storage; they appeared in the answers of ca. a half of the respondents. The mentioned losses amounted to 1.10 and 1.23% of the total production in 2017 and 2018. Also, in 19 surveyed fishprocessing plants, during the manufacture and preparation of the fish to distribution, the losses of the raw materials and of the manufacture’s products were relatively low and were 1.34 and 1.56 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The mentioned data do not consider the participation of by-products. In fish processing industry as well as in any other sector, the optimal utilization of all edible parts of the obtained raw materials is a significant matter.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered to be one of the most effective methods for the decomposition of a wide range of hardly-biodegradable organic compounds, including pesticides. The implementation of such processes in the water streams treatment often leads to the formation of decomposition by-products of micropollutants occurring in water. These compounds, even in concentrations of a few ng/dm3, may negatively affect the water quality. Therefore, there is a need for detailed analyses that will allow to identify intermediates found in the AOP solutions and to assess their impact on the aquatic environment. The paper presents an attempt to identify by-products of three pesticides: triclosan, triallat and oxadiazon during ozonation, chlorination and UV irradiation of their water solutions. The identification of compounds was performed based on the results of the GC-MS analysis using the NIST v17 mass spectral library. It has been shown that during all of tested advanced oxidation processes, incomplete degradation of pesticides occurs. The number of micropollutant decomposition by-products increases with the increase of the applied ozone dose and UV exposure time. During the chlorination process Cl− atoms were added to the tested compound molecules. In the case of triclosan, it led to the generation of compounds containing four or five chlorine atoms in their structure. The toxicological analysis performed by the use of the Microtox® and Lemna sp. Growth Inhibition Test showed the toxic nature of post-process solutions. The decomposition by-products of triclosan and triallate, generated during the UV irradiation process, were highly toxic against the test organisms (toxic effect > 75 %). This makes it impossible to drain these solutions into the natural environment.

Industrial symbioses are intended to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources and avoid waste through closed material cycles. The waste and residual materials of one actor become the resource of the other. The better use of raw materials can lead to cost and competitive advantages for the involved partners. The UBIS project investigates the realization of such industrial symbioses. Two showcases from the project region with focus on anaerobic digestion illustrate the effectiveness of industrial symbioses.

Non-waste production is one of the main goals of food industry. The possibilities of utilizing by-products are closely related to the development of science and technology. The by-product of one production plant can be the basic raw material in the next production chain. In the recent years ithere was observed an increase of production of cereal grain based food, accompanied by generation of large amounts of various by-products. High concentration of nutrients and bioactive substances allows for using of these products not only for feed production, but also as additives for innovative or functional food. In this work authors showed possibilities to use of by-products obtained from cereal industry.

W pracy dokonano próby identyfikacji ubocznych produktów rozkładu trzech pestycydów, tj. triklosanu, trialatu i oksadiazonu, w trakcie ozonowania, chlorowania i oddziaływania promieniami UV na ich roztwory wodne. Identyfikację związków wykonano w oparciu o wyniki analizy GC-MS z wykorzystaniem biblioteki widm masowych NIST v17. Wykonana analiza toksykologiczna z użyciem testu Microtox® i Lemna sp. Growth Inhibition Test wykazała toksyczny charakter roztworów poprocesowych. Uboczne produkty rozkładu triklosanu i trialatu powstałe w procesie naświetlania ich wodnych roztworów promieniami UV przyjmowały charakter wysokotoksyczny względem organizmów wskaźnikowych (efekt toksyczny >75 %). Uniemożliwia to odprowadzenie tych roztworów do środowiska naturalnego.

In the present study, physical, chemical, morphological, crystallographic analysis of the non-treated and treated (100 °C during 30 min) sugarcane bagasse fibers were examined. Sugarcane bagasse fibers pre-treatment effect on the Portland cement hydration was monitored by inhibition tests and differential scanning calorimetry in the first 24 h. Furthermore, 28 days age physical-mechanical properties of cement composite materials with sugarcane bagasse fibers were also evaluated. Inhibition index of treated sugarcane bagasse fibers was 5.9%, while for the non-treated sugarcane bagasse fibers it was 67.3%. Cement composites containing treated sugarcane bagasse fibers showed lower physical properties (water absorption and thickness swelling) than the cement composites reinforced with non-treated sugarcane bagasse fibers (p < 0.05). Likewise, mechanical properties under flexure (modulus of rupture, MOR, and modulus of elasticity, MOE) of cement composites with treated sugarcane bagasse fibers showed higher values than the cement composites with non-treated sugarcane bagasse fibers (p < 0.05), thus proving the pre-treatment efficiency on sugarcane bagasse fibers for cement composites.

More than ever, today processing industry seeks for new solutions to extract various products from diverse organisms, which due to numerous and problematic issues (constant availability, lack of technological solutions, handling and processing problems) were abandoned in the past. Within this group, species of freshwater crayfish play a substantial role, and in Poland four species from this group exist: noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus (Pontastacus) leptodactylus), spiny-cheek crayfish (Orconectes limosus) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus lenisculus). Growing expectations of the contemporary customers and innovative technological solutions lead to situation in which crayfish are regarded as potential source of edible and inedible raw materials. Crayfish flesh has a low fat kontent (0.8-2.8%) and is relatively rich in protein (18-20%). However, due to low meat share (12-18%) science and industry initiatives quest for efficient methods to utilize by-products as, to a some extent, it was designed for processing of carapace (biopolymer chitosane, pigment astaxanthin) and protein concentrates produced from extracted soft parts of crayfish. In order to fully evaluate availability of crayfish raw material it is crucial to define year-round availability of crayfish, develop or redesign technological solutions to extract crayfish meat and process by-products, and what most important perform an economic analysis.

The aim of the studies was to compare an impact of oxidizing agents on degradation of ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate acid (EHMC). The oxidation reaction was carried out in the presence of sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and ozone with/without UV radiation. EHMC degradation and the analysis of products were performed using gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometry detector. The most effective method of EHMC degradation turned out to be ozonation with participation of UV radiation. In this system, degradation proceeded most quickly and generated a small amount of by-products (2-propyl-1-pentanol; 4-metoxybenzaldehyde and Z-EHMC). Under the influence of sodium hypochlorite, numerous chloroorganic products were formed, which can cause secondary contamination of water. Application of appropriate oxidation processes can contribute to degradation of micropollutants and thus to improvement of water quality.

Results of laboratory scale research have been presented on the effects of an oxidizing reactor on ozone consumption and by-producs composition and separation of simultaneous NOx and SO2 removal from a carrier gas by ozonation method and absorption in an alkaline solution. The additional Dreschel washer added before two washers containing 100 ml of 0.1 molar NaOH solution played the role of an oxidation reactor. Its effect was investigated using an empty (dry or wetted) or filled with packing elements washer. The measured by-products in a scrubber and in the oxidizing reactor were SO32-, SO42-, NO2- and NO3- ions, respectively. It has been shown that use of oxidizing reactor improves NOx removal efficiency reducing ozone consumption. Wetting of the oxidation reactor with water enables a preliminary separation of sulphur and nitrogen species between the oxidizing reactor and an alkaline absorber. Application of packing elements in the oxidizing reactor allows to retain 90% of nitrogen compounds in it. Some results were confirmed by tests in pilot scale.
