The article continues research on the transformations of Wrocław’s medieval quarters, focusing on the southeastern area of the chartered city, which was initially linked to the pre-charter route leading to Ostrów Tumski. The historical and morphological analysis reveals the complexity of the evolution of the built environment, where gradual changes were interrupted by sudden transformations resulting from the development of fortifications, secularization, wartime destruction, and post war reconstruction. The strategic location of the area in question of the area between Święta Katarzyna, Klemensa Janickiego, Jana Ewangelisty Purkyniego Streets and Dominikański Square, at the intersection of trade routes, fortification boundaries, and river crossings, played a crucial role in shaping its specific structure and function. The article aims to present this quarter as an urban unit whose transformations reflect the dynamics of the city’s development and its cultural conditions.
The ageing population problem is frequently raised in economic and social contexts. In architecture, there is also a need to look for new solutions to improve the quality of life of senior citizens. Fundamentally, the question of improving the accessibility of existing facilities, which, with time, no longer meet the needs of the residents, is fundamental. This article aims to present a proposal for revitalising the 'Superunit' in Katowice based on research into the quality of life of senior citizens in Poland. Based mainly on a qualitative research method to assess the quality of the existing space, as well as on the results of a survey with open-ended questions and in-depth interview on the living conditions of senior citizens in the Superunit, a quantitative and statistical research method to identify user groups and their numbers, based on population-wide statistical data collected using mixed methods by the Statistics Poland (GUS) and the Public Opinion Research Centre (CBOS). As a result, the project to revalue the building, transforming it into a vertical housing estate, is fully adapted to older people's needs and meets the requirements for new residential facilities and solves problems related to the quality of the building's construction and the limitations of the architecture of the communist period. The revitalisation concept helps prevent social exclusion and supports seniors in adapting to new life circumstances. It enhances their life satisfaction, encourages greater activity, and fosters stronger social connections, contributing to improved physical and mental health. The presented approach can be implemented in the revitalisation process of specific buildings and entire housing estates, as well as at the design stage of new investments that meet the needs of older people. This will help improve the housing situation by increasing the accessibility and usability of residential units, while also reducing the amount of raw materials used to produce building materials, which will positively impact their cost.

Programu stu kamienic.

The subject matter concerning revalorisation of tenement houses in Wroclaw, mainly of 19th-century origin, was raised in the paper. Nowadays, one of the crucial preservation problems is the facade colour, particularly of plastered buildings, which often differs considerably from their original colour scheme. The author focused on restored facades of tenement houses near the Old Town of Wroclaw and its old-time Przedmieście Odrzańskie, Piaskowe and Oławskie estates, which reverted to their former glory. The architectural details, original texture of the building material and colour scheme were successfully recreated and exposed. Their recreation was based on thorough plaster structure research. However, there are many examples of „new” arrangements of historical facades. Since the post-war years the old city’s quarter development was filled with infill buildings, more or less successful in form and colour scheme, often without considering historical conditions and location characteristics. In the paper selected tenement houses subsumed in the masterplan area of the Nadodrze estate and renovated in the first years of the “One Hundred Tenement Houses Programme” were discussed.
Edmunda Małachowicza i trwały blisko 40 lat, nadając budowli obecny kształt.

The article presents an outline of the process of the reconstruction of the Wroclaw cathedral after World War II against the background of the technical problems of the time and the conservation practice and doctrine connected with the reconstruction of monumental objects erected in European cities and destroyed to a considerable degree, i.e. about 70 per cent of the historic fabric. The range of dates covers two periods of the cathedral's reconstruction. The first one was led by Marcin Bukowski, and the second was connected with the conservation of the external form of the building. The work was then coordinated by Prof. Edmund Małachowicz and had taken nearly 40 years, before giving the building its present shape. The aim of this paper is to analyse the conservator's approach to the restitution of the building by the two architects. It was carried out on the basis of literature research, analysis of the authors' projects, iconographic materials and in situ studies of the fabric of the building. The year 2022 will mark the 70th anniversary of the cathedral's renewed dedication after its reconstruction, but the process of the object's revalorisation, mainly of its interior, is still taking place. In recent years, reconstruction and restoration of historical buildings with architectural measures has emphasized the value of authenticity of their historic substance. The value was referred to in basic doctrinal documents such as: The Athens Charter of 1931, the Venice Charter of 1964, and the Nara Document on Authenticity of 1994. This fact prompts a reflection: Is the value of authenticity being treated as a priority in conservation - the main guideline for work on historic buildings, or has this postulate become less relevant over the years?
