Model layered composites were made of polyester resin reinforced with layers of glass fibre and aramid fibre fabrics. The fabrics for the study were selected in a manner enabling the comparison of their ballistic resistance depending on the material type and density. Additionally, aluminium plates were used to produce the composites. The study examined the resistance of the model composites to 1.1 g fragment simulating projectile (FSP) penetration, their susceptibility to deformation caused by shock waves produced by pure TNT charges, and their resistance to the effects of detonation of model improvised explosive devices (IED) containing fragments in the form of bearing balls. The analysis and optimisation of the test results enabled the selection of a layer configuration combining the materials studied that has the lowest area density and that protects car bottom structures against perforation in the case of a detonation of a small improvised explosive device.

Wykonano modelowe kompozyty warstwowe do budowy których wybrane zostały: żywica poliestrowa zbrojona warstwami tkanin z włókien szklanych i aramidowych. Tkaniny do badań dobrano w sposób umożliwiający porównanie odporności balistycznej w zależności od rodzaju materiału i gęstości. Dodatkowo do konstrukcji kompozytów użyto blachy aluminiowej. Analiza i optymalizacja wyników badań eksperymentalnych pozwoliła dobrać układ warstwowy, będący kombinacją badanych materiałów, o najmniejszej gęstości powierzchniowej chroniący dno samochodów przed przebiciem w przypadku detonacji małego improwizowanego ładunku wybuchowego.

W artykule przedstawiono diagnostyczną technikę umożliwiającą badanie wewnętrznej struktury materiału kompozytowego zbrojonego włóknem węglowym (CFRP – carbon fibre reinforced plastic) stosowanego coraz częściej w konstrukcjach lekkich pancerzy do osłony pojazdów specjalnych. W artykule przedstawiono porównanie wyników uzyskanych z zastosowania różnych metod termograficznych do oceny uszkodzeń wewnętrznych próbek kompozytu zbrojonego włóknem węglowym (CFRP) po badaniach niszczących.

The paper introduces a diagnostic technique making possible the research of internal structures in composite material (CFRP – carbon fiber reinforced plastic) that is used more often in construction of light armors protecting vehicles. Little mass and the resistance against the perforation with bullets and fragments are basic requirements of contemporary armors. This requirement could be met by using composites. Composite armor is examined by testing its ballistic resistance and this is performed by carrying out bullet proof tests. During this test in the moment of bullet’s striking into armor the composite material comes into destruction of its internal structure on a considerable area. This is especially visible in multi-layer composites. It causes so-called delamination which is characterized by the loss of interlayer cohesion and destruction of continuity of polymer matrix in which the fiber is embedded. Delamination appears both in the case of full and partial penetration of bullet. The composite material is practically destroyed in area of delamination. This is very difficult to evaluate the size of delamination area from outside because in most cases external symptoms of internal damage of composite structure are not visible. The delamination area may be well estimated by using methods of non-destructive testing. This method has to assure a high detection of defects and a high speed of inspection. These requirements may be met by IR thermography diagnostic methods. Comparison of testing of a composite samples (CFRP) by means of pure optical method and methods that use ultrasonic and eddy current stimulations as well as lock-in thermography method will be presented.

Presently a lot of designs of light armours are based mainly on the multilayer composite materials. Thanks to these materials it was possible to achieve highest levels of ballistic resistance of specific armour at limited weight. The weight (area density) and the performance have direct influence on the value of combat ability of equipment and soldiers. Carbon fibers are basic types of reinforcement used in composites. They have many technical applications including light ballistic covers where they are mostly used as multi-layer composite materials constituting a structure made of several interconnected layers or many layers of carbon fibers, or in combination with other materials. Light ballistic covers have usually thickness of several to 10-20 mm and potential defects occurring in them have thermo-physical properties definitely different than materials they are made of so the non-destructive tests using thermography methods may be effective in detecting these defects. The main methods of active thermographic tests are as follows [1, 2]: - Pulsed Thermography – PT, - Step Heating Thermography – SHT, - Lock-in Thermography – LT, - Vibrothermography – VT. In the paper an application of Step Heating Thermography and Vibrothermography to detection of delaminating area of CFRP composites after mechanical impacts is presented.

Model composites were made, for which the following components were selected: epoxy resin reinforced with layers of NCF (non-crimped fabric) with appropriately oriented glass, carbon and aramid fibres. The fabrics for the test were selected so as to allow the comparison of ballistic resistance depending on the type of material, thickness and sequence of fabric. Resin infusion technology was used in preparing the composites. The resistance of the composite models was tested for penetration with: 9x19 mm FMJ projectiles, at a bullet impact speed of ca. 360 m/s, fragment simulating projectiles (FSP) with a mass of 1.1 g and fragments of a model IED improvised explosive device containing fragments in the form of 3/16” bearing balls. Carbon composites have the highest resistance to perforation with a 1.1 g FSP fragment simulating projectiles of all the materials tested. The ballistic limit of a four-directional carbon composite with a surface density of 5.5 kg/m2 is 305 m/s, and for a surface density of 21 kg/m2 the ballistic limit is 780 m/s. The ballistic resistance of the carbon composite is related to its high shear strength - the highest of all the materials tested. In reference to the model of composite damage by the projectile, this means that the first stage of penetration, in which the material is compressed and subject to shearing force, is the determining factor in resistance to perforation.

Wykonano modelowe kompozyty, do budowy których wybrano: żywicę epoksydową zbrojoną warstwami tkanin NCF (non-crimped fabric) o odpowiednio zorientowanych włóknach szklanych, węglowych i aramidowych. Do wytworzenia kompozytu wykorzystana została technologia infuzji żywicy. Zbadano odporność wykonanych modeli kompozytów na przebicie: pociskami kalibru 9x19 mm FMJ, przy prędkości uderzenia pocisków ok. 360 m/s, pociskami symulującymi odłamek (FSP) o masie 1,1 g, odłamkami modelowego improwizowanego urządzenia wybuchowego zawierającego odłamki w postaci kulek łożyskowych 3/16”. Spośród zbadanych materiałów kompozyty węglowe charakteryzują się największą odpornością na przebicie pociskami symulującymi odłamek FSP 1,1 g. Granica balistyczna kompozytu węglowego czterokierunkowego o gęstości powierzchniowej 5,5 kg/m2 wynosi 305 m/s, a o gęstości powierzchniowej 21 kg/m2 granica balistyczna wynosi 780 m/s.

The article presents problems related to assessment of subsurficial damage resulting from destructive tests of light composite armours that constitute multi-layer structures made from various materials. The active method of optical lock-in thermography was used as the non destructive method of the damage area assessment. Determination of the size of internal damage area allows for comparison of armours made from various materials. Basing on the tests conducted it was found out for the light armour samples tested that the area of subsurficial damage of material from the side of impact of a projectile simulating a shell splinter can be three times larger than the projectile’s calibre; on the other side this area can be 15-times larger than the calibre.

IR thermography is a technique used to detection, registration, processing and visualization of invisible infrared radiation emitted by a tested object. Image (thermogram) is a result of this technique and it maps the distribution of temperature on surface of tested object. The image after entering in digital form into the computer needs to get certain treatments on it to separate information of interest through its processing. A characteristic feature of image processing is that the image exists at either the input or output of information processing. The output images should be free from disturbances and they should have distinctly separated features of interest. After the initial processing of the image, the next steps of its analysis follow. In the result of the analysis quantitative data is received that describes some determined features of the image and the complete image comprising hundreds details is substituted by a limited population of separated features. This population can be used effectively by different recognition methods and algorithms. In thermographic investigations, situations occur when treatment of images applied in standard software is not fully efficient to obtain information, which is "camouflaged" in taken thermogram. Such event takes place particularly in the case of looking for thermal "disturbances" onto the surface, which are caused by the undersurface defects. Such situation needs the application of special transformations carried out on thermograms. These transformations lead to selecting from all information included in the thermogram only such part of it that is essential from the point of view of conducted tests. In such case it is required the usage of advanced data processing techniques like thermal tomography, one-dimensional Fourier analysis, principle component analysis (PCA), an approximation by means of polynominals, wavelet analysis, neural network and reconstruction of thermographic signal. In this paper, these methods are described and examples of their use in tests of light ballistic protections are presented.

Do przetwarzania sekwencji źródłowej w badaniach eksperymentalnych zastosowano kilka algorytmów stosowanych w impulsowych termograficznych badaniach nieniszczących takich jak: normalizacja, dopasowanie wielomianu, impulsowo fazowa termografia, analiza głównych składowych i analiza korelacji. Dokonano również oceny ich skuteczności.

Presently a lot of designs of light armours are based mainly on the multilayer composite materials. Thanks to these materials it was possible to achieve the highest levels of ballistic resistance of specific armour at limited weight. The weight (area density) and the efficacy have direct influence on the value of combat ability of equipment and soldiers [1]. One of the basic types of reinforcement materials in composites are carbon fibres. They have many technical applications including light ballistic covers where they are most often used as multi-layer composite materials constituting a structure made of several interconnected layers or many layers of carbon fibres, or in combination with other materials. This work presents modern approach to detection of defects in composite structures of military applications. In these structures different failure modes can occur during the service life. Failure modes are connected with the cycling fatigue loads, impact damage and environmental conditions. Moreover, during the manufacturing process different defects occur, affecting the material strength. There are following typical failure modes and defects: delaminations, disbands, foreign object inclusions, porosity. To get information about the occurrence of discontinuity in objects (defects) without disarranging their macro and microstructure and causing changes of their functional proprieties, the nondestructive testing methods are used. IR thermography is one of many techniques used to "see the unseen" and IR thermography methods are positively verified for detecting these types of defects [2]. Recently these methods have benefited from the development of computer image processing and imager systems having higher temperature resolution, which makes these methods appear much more effective for non-destructive testing. The experimental results obtained at testing samples of composite material were processed by applying the algorithms of Normalization, Pulse Phase Thermography, Polynomial Fitting, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Correlation Analysis. In this paper both modelling (Figs. 1 and 2, Table 1) and experimental (Figs. 3-6) results illustrating advantages and limitations of IR thermography for inspecting composite materials arepresented. It is shown in the paper that pulsed thermography is an interesting me-thod for detection of destruction area in composite armours made of a multi-layer carbon-fibre laminate. In the case of the pulsed method it is necessary to use algorithm analysis of thermograms to detect defects. It allows precise analysis of the tested structure of composites, but is usually time-consuming.

The bar or net screens are ones of the methods to increase protection level of military vehicle crews against antitank grenades fired from RPG-7. Their task is to prevent generation of the shaped charge jet. The probability of vehicle's protection level when applying such types of screens depends on their structure - percentage share of the open space, i.e. space for which the flying grenade will not touch the structure element with its fuse, but it will be destructed. The two mechanisms are here mainly used: short circuit in the fuse circuit, deformation of conical section of the shaped charge warhead. This article presents analysis of structure of the bar and net screens due to share of the open space, for various impact angle of grenade in elevation and azimuth. The following were changed: thickness and width of bars and distance between them, thickness of wire and shape of individual net mesh. The solution of bar screen with the lowest weight and grenade destruction ability was selected. This solution was compared with the net screen offered currently on the market For the selected solutions, for angles increasing in elevation, up to 300 value, the bar screen has the larger open space than net screen. For angles in azimuth, the bar screen has larger open space for the entire range of angles. The bar screen is heavier by 50-60% when compared to the selected net screens, but their operation costs are lower. They are repaired in field conditions

Light composite armour is a preferred solution against military and paramilitary sources of present threats as the reducing mass of battle vehicles provides a possibility of their quick air-transport. The light armours of these vehicles should be resistant against: common and rifle bullets, grenades, anti-personal mines, IED - improvised explosive devices. Recently, NATO countries have initiated an intensive investigation process to introduce modern composite materials into protection systems of armored vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles. The composites reinforced by fibres are used in structural elements of vehicle trunks. Materials of composite armours include graphite epoxy, glass epoxy and aramid fiber composites. The composites that have been examined can include a variety of defects, such as ballistic impacts, embedded defects, manufacturing defects, thermal damage, moisture ingress and other induced defects. Methods for testing ballistic protection of light armours are known and used. First of all, they consist of checking armours resistance against the bullets where the bullet velocity is known. Moreover, the V50 velocity is defined during the test. In this method the V50 velocity of a round or standard fragment is defined (according to STANAG 2920) as a velocity at which armour is penetrated with the probability of 50% (Fig. 2). The distribution of points hit by bullets or fragments on the surface of an armour is also important. In fact, only correct distribution of these points provides a guaranty for an impartial assessment of tested designs. After hitting by a bullet, shape and size of an area of damage in composite armours depends on the type and design of armour, so type of reinforcing material is particularly important. Knowledge of damage characteristics allows arranging the hitting points to avoid overlapping of damaged areas. Considering quality and protection ability of armour, the extent of internal damage should be kept in mind besides the direct ability to stop bullets and fragments. The Military Institute of Armament Technology in cooperation with the Military Institute of Armour & Automotive Technology carried out a project on using nondestructive testing method in order to evaluate destruction zones in light ballistic armour which appear as a result of impact of bullets and fragments. Nondestructive testing by using active IR thermography methods is very useful for evaluation of internal defects. In the paper there is presented the dependence between the energy of fragments/or bullets and the dimension of internal defects (Figs. 8 and 11).
