This paper evaluates the properties of lithium-ion batteries at different discharge rates and temperatures, by determining the internal resistance of the battery through measurements of the battery's current and voltage during discharge. Resistance is calculated over the entire discharge cycle of the battery, for different initial battery temperatures. The internal resistance is a crucial parameter that influences battery efficiency and consequently the available operating time of the devices powered, which is especially significant in electric vehicles.

Accurate state - of - charge (SOC) estimation is vital for reliable battery management systems (BMS) in electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium - ion batteries, especially under varying temperatures. This paper proposes an optimized bidirectional long short ‑term memory network with an attention mechanism (Bi - LSTM - AM) for robust SOC estimation across three different temperatures (0°C, 25°C, 50°C). We adopt training and testing with US06 profile, while hyper-parameter tuning ensures optimal model configuration. The Bi-LSTM-AM surpasses conventional LSTM net works, achieving faster training and lower computational cost. Hence, it delivers accurate and noise ‑minimized SOC estimations, achieving a mean squared error (MAE) of 0.4822% and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.6563% at 25°C, with 99.72% accuracy on unseen testing data. In con clusion, evaluations of the proposed model under different temperatures and scenarios show that the model performs best at higher temperatures, and an MAE that remains below 0.66% even at 0°C. the Bi ‑LSTM ‑AM consistently outperforms existing SOC estimation approaches.

W niniejszym artykule zaproponowano zoptymalizowaną dwukierunkową sieć długiej pamięci krótkotrwałej z mechanizmem uwagi (Bi-LSTM-AM) do dokładnego sza cowania SOC w trzech różnych temperaturach (0°C, 25°C, 50°C). Wykorzystano proces uczenia i testowania z profilem US06, a dostrojenie hiper parametrów zapewniło optymalną konfigurację modelu. Bi-LSTM ‑AM przewyższa konwencjonalne sieci LSTM, osiągając szybsze uczenie i niższe koszty obliczeniowe. W rezultacie dostarcza dokładnych szacunków SOC z minimalizacją szumów, osiągając średni błąd kwadratowy (MAE) na poziomie 0,4822% i pierwiastek błędu średniokwadratowego (RMSE) na poziomie 0,6563% w temperaturze 25°C, z dokładnością 99,72% na niewidzianych danych testowych. Podsumowując, oceny zaproponowanego modelu w różnych temperaturach i scenariuszach pokazują, że model działa najlepiej w wyższych temperaturach, z nieco niższą dokładnością w temperaturach niższych. Jednak Bi-LSTM-AM konsekwentnie przewyższa istniejące metody szacowania SOC.
To accurately estimate the State of Health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries, this study proposes a novel approach combining a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) with an error correction mechanism. By extracting health features from partial charging data, this method reduces dependence on complete charge-discharge cycles, addressing challenges like long data acquisition times and high costs. The CNN captures local features of battery degradation, while the GRU models aging dynamics to provide an initial SOH estimate. An error correction strategy using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and Markov Chain (MC) further refines the results. GPR models nonlinear relationships to optimize predictions, and MC adjusts error distributions dynamically. Experiments on the University of Maryland dataset demonstrate that this method achieves lower Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) than benchmark techniques, proving its accuracy and robustness.

This study introduces the current status of recycling technology for waste lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on the environmental impact during the recycling process of waste lithium-ion battery cathode materials. Composition of lithium-ion battery was analyzed in order to estimate which components are potentially dangerous to the environment. Heavy metals are main pollutants and change the pH of the environment; also, organic solvent actively reacts with oxidants and reducing agents in the environment. Other parts of waste battery mainly impact an air during the combustion or thermal decomposition generating toxic lithium, cobalt oxides, other gases. Sources of air, water, noise pollution, solid waste, and toxic chemicals generated in the recycling process were identified. Air pollutants generated at every stage of the process of positive electrode materials recycling include dust, acidic gases, and organic gases. The wastewater is generated mainly from the discharge pretreatment and cathode recovery processes (leaching and extraction). Although the wastewater volume is relatively small, its composition is complex, poorly biochemical and toxic (lithium compounds, organic solvents, etc.). In the dismantling process, plastic connectors, circuit boards, high-voltage wiring, powders, collectors and pool electrode material casings are generated as solid waste. Corresponding pollution prevention and control measures are suggested to prevent environmental pollution during the recycling process of waste lithium-ion battery cathode materials.
Under working conditions, since the remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of lithium-ion battery is subject to uncertainties of random charging and discharging, and infeasibility of battery capacity test, a fusion model based RUL prediction method was proposed. First, the feature learning method of lithium-ion batteries was developed by synthesizing manual extraction and one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN) extraction. Then, a fused method was proposed to estimate the historical available capacity through exploring the spatial and temporal relationship of features, and the long short-term memory (LSTM) network model was adopted for predicting the RUL of lithium-ion battery. The proposed method was verified through the comparison of differentmethods, and the results show that it can realize highly precise and stable capacity estimation and RUL prediction under working conditions.

Lithium-ion batteries surround us in our everyday lives. Interest in LiB-powered devices continues to grow, and with it comes questions about their safety. The aim of this article was to assess the effects of damage to a lithium-ion battery. The testing method involved mechanical damage to the battery using a sharpened threaded rod. From the study it can be concluded that mechanical damage is very dangerous and leads to an uncontrolled increase in temperature, fire and even explosion. Therefore, special safety measures should be taken and research should be continued on many levels related to LiB batteries, starting with the proper chemical composition of the batteries and ending with the appropriate selection of the extinguishing agent.
Lithium-based battery systems (LBS) are used in various applications, from the smallest electronic devices to power generation plants. LBS energy storage technology, which can offer high power and high energy density simultaneously, can respond to continuous energy needs and meet sudden power demands. The lifetime of LBSs, which are seen as a high-cost storage technology, depends on many parameters such as usage habits, temperature and charge rate. Since LBSs store energy electrochemically, they are seriously affected by temperature. High-temperature environments increase the thermal stress exerted on LBS and cause its chemical structure to deteriorate much faster. In addition, the fast charging feature of LBSs, which is generally presented as an advantage, increases the internal temperature of the cell and negatively affects the battery life. The proposed energy management approach ensures that the ambient temperature affects the charging speed of the battery and that the charging speed is adaptively updated continuously. So, the two parameters that harm battery health absorb each other, and the battery has a longer life. A new differential approach has been created for the proposed energy management system. The total amount of energy that can be withdrawn from LBS is increased by 14.18% as compared to the LBS controlled with the standard energy management system using the genetic algorithm optimized parameters. Thus the LBS replacement period is extended, providing both cost benefits and environmentally friendly management by LBSs turning into chemical waste distinctly later.
This paper develops a novel approach for the state of charge (SOC) estimation of Lithium-ion batteries in energy storage power stations, leveraging an improved back-propagation (BP) neural network optimized by an immune genetic algorithm (IGA). Addressing the paramount importance of accurate SOC estimation for enhancing battery management systems, this work proposes a methodological enhancement aimed at refining estimation precision and operational efficiency. First, the mechanisms of temperature, current, and voltage impacts on SOC are revealed, which serve as the inputs of the neural network. Second, the improved BP neural network’s structure and optimization through an IGA are designed, emphasizing the mitigation of traditional BP neural networks’ limitations including slow convergence speed and complex parameterization. Through an extensive experimental setup, the proposed model is validated against standard BP neural networks across various discharge experiments at different temperatures and discharge currents. Results prove that the estimation accuracy of the proposed method reaches as high as 98.15% and faster converges compared to the traditional BP network, thereby being valuable practically.
Aim: The aim of the article is to discuss, using literature on the subject, the results of scientific research and fire tests devoted to lithium-ion batteries and electric-powered vehicles, as well as various methods and techniques for extinguishing them. The presentation of these issues is important in terms of identifying the hazards present in construction objects where electric vehicles are parked and charged, as well as conducting effective and safe rescue operations during incidents involving them. Introduction: The development of electromobility, including the growing number of electric vehicles, poses new challenges for fire protection, both in the context of conducting rescue operations and the safety of parking and charging these vehicles at construction objects. Fires on lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles follow a different pattern than fires on conventional energy sources. This includes the causes of their origin, the course and methods of extinguishing them, as well as the dangers to those in their zone, including from the toxic products of combustion that are emitted. Consideration of the occurrence of these risks is particularly important in underground infrastructure, where firefighting is more difficult and the ability to eliminate the toxic products is limited. The article discusses the results of scientific research and fire tests involving lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles, taking into account different methods and techniques for extinguishing them, conducted in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, South Korea, the United States of America and Poland, among others. Methodology: The authors prepared the article based on a review and analysis of the results of scientific and experimental research, as well as on the literature. Conclusions: The growing number of electric vehicles increases the likelihood of accidents and fires involving them. This poses a challenge for rescue operations involving the vehicles mentioned above. An analysis of the literature on the subject leads to the conclusion that the catalogue of risks during rescue operations involving electric vehicles is different from that of conventionally powered vehicles. These risks require research, analysis, evaluation and validation.

Analiza literatury przedmiotu prowadzi do wniosku, iż katalog zagrożeń podczas prowadzenia działań ratowniczych z udziałem pojazdów elektrycznych jest inny niż w przypadku pojazdów z napędem konwencjonalnym. Zagrożenia te wymagają badań, analizy, oceny i walidacji. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy dostępnych wyników badań naukowych, danych empirycznych i rzeczywistych zdarzeń można stwierdzić, iż w porównaniu z pożarami pojazdów spalinowych pożary pojazdów elektrycznych mają inną dynamikę rozwoju i mogą w związku z tym stanowić inne, nieznane dotąd strażakom zagrożenia.

Currently, lithium-ion batteries still use electrodes from graphite, which is a natural resource for non-metallic minerals. As a sustainable plan, research on the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries based on biomass electrodes has prospects for commercial development. In this study, carbon stems of water spinach (Ipomoea Aquatica) were used as electrodes on the battery. Water spinach is processed into nanocarbon by hydrothermal method and pyrolysis. The size of the nanocarbon particles from water spinach in this study was 200 mesh resulting from the grinding method. The type of battery made is a bag battery with a size of 8×12 cm by performing variable optimization by using a concentration of 50% LiCl/Li2SO4 electrolytes media, Polyurethane/Polyacrylate binder, and Triethylamine/Non-emulsifier. The highest power and energy values are generated from carbon based lithium-ion batteries from water spinach with LiCl electrolyte media, Polyurethane binder, and Triethylamine emulsion which is 5.404 W and 4.511 W∙h.
Conventional fuels are the primary source of pollution. Switching towards clean energy becomes increasingly necessary for sustainable development. Electric vehicles are the most suitable alternative for the future of the automobile industry. The battery, being the power source, is the critical element of electric vehicles. However, its charging and discharging rates have always been a question. The discharge rate depends upon various factors such as vehicle load, temperature gradient, surface inclination, terrain, tyre pressure, and vehicle speed. In this work, a 20 Ah, 13S-8P configured lithium-ion battery, developed specifically for a supermileage custom vehicle, is used for experimentation. The abovementioned factors have been analyzed to check the vehicle’s overall performance in different operating conditions, and their effects have been investigated against the battery’s discharge rate. It has been observed that the discharge rate remains unaffected by the considered temperature difference. However, overheating the battery results in thermal runaway, damaging and reducing its life. Increasing the number of brakes to 15, the impact on the discharge rate is marginal; however, if the number of brakes increases beyond 21, a doubling trend in voltage drops was observed. Thus, a smoother drive at a slow-varying velocity is preferred. Experiments for different load conditions and varying terrains show a rise in discharge with increasing load, low discharge for concrete, and the largest discharge for rocky terrain.

The paper deals with the subject of the prediction of useful energy during the cycling of a lithium-ion cell (LIC), using machine learning-based techniques. It was demonstrated that depending on the combination of cycling parameters, the useful energy (RUEc) that can be transferred during a full cycle is variable, and also three different types of evolution of changes in RUEc were identified. The paper presents a new non-parametric RUEc prediction model based on Gaussian process regression. It was proven that the proposed methodology enables the RUEc prediction for LICs discharged, above the depth of discharge, at a level of 70% with an acceptable error, which is confirmed for new load profiles. Furthermore, techniques associated with explainable artificial intelligence were applied to determine the significance of model input parameters – the variable importance method – and to determine the quantitative effect of individual model parameters (their reciprocal interaction) on RUEc – the accumulated local effects model of the first and second order.
The use of lithium-ion battery energy storage (BES) has grown rapidly during the past year for both mobile and stationary applications. For mobile applications, BES units are used in the range of 10–120 kWh. Power grid applications of BES are characterized by much higher capacities (range of MWh) and this area particularly has great potential regarding the expected energy system transition in the next years. The optimal operation of BES by an energy storage management system is usually predictive and based strongly on the knowledge about the state of charge (SOC) of the battery. The SOC depends on many factors (e.g. material, electrical and thermal state of the battery), so that an accurate assessment of the battery SOC is complex. The SOC intermediate prediction methods are based on the battery models. The modeling of BES is divided into three types: fundamental (based on material issues), electrical equivalent circuit (based on electrical modeling) and balancing (based on a reservoir model). Each of these models requires parameterization based on measurements of input/output parameters. These models are used for SOC modelbased calculation and in battery system simulation for optimal battery sizing and planning. Empirical SOC assessment methods currently remain the most popular because they allow practical application, but the accuracy of the assessment, which is the key factor for optimal operation, must also be strongly considered. This scientific contribution is divided into two papers. Paper part I will present a holistic overview of the main methods of SOC assessment. Physical measurement methods, battery modeling and the methodology of using the model as a digital twin of a battery are addressed and discussed. Furthermore, adaptive methods and methods of artificial intelligence, which are important for the SOC calculation, are presented. In paper part II, examples of the application areas are presented and their accuracy is discussed
Aim: The aim of the article is to present the current state of knowledge regarding the possibility of suppressing or effectively extinguishing fires of electric vehicle. Due to the growing popularity of means of transport powered by electric batteries, the problem of emerging fires and their effects is becoming recognizable. Due to the possible violent process of combustion of lithium-ion batteries (hereinafter referred to as Li-Ion batteries), a fire in a vehicle may lead to a wide range of property damage. For at least a decade, intensive efforts have been made to develop appropriate methods to allow firefighters to deal with the problem of fires of electric vehicles. These activities were directed, among others, at new fire extinguishing/suppression techniques, innovative extinguishing agents and methods of their application. Introduction: Taking into account the current global trends in changing the method of powering vehicles from fossil fuels into electricity, the occurrence of such events should be expected to intensify. The authors systematize the issue by analysing the literature on fires, Li-Ion batteries being a critical element that may initiate a fire. The adopted and practiced methods of extinguishing/suppressing a fire as well as the used extinguishing agents were also analysed. The publication may be an element helpful in selecting the most optimal fire extinguishing method of the electric energy storage unit in a vehicle. Methodology: The review of the current state of knowledge was made based on publications on the fire characteristics of Li-Ion batteries, as well as works and research projects in the field of extinguishing methods and the effectiveness of various extinguishing agents. In addition, the procedures used by the emergency services and selected real events were analysed. Conclusions: Fires of Li-Ion batteries are a relatively new and growing phenomenon. Fires in fully or partially electric vehicles are much more difficult to fully extinguish compared to fires in vehicles with internal combustion engines. So far, no effective method has been developed that would allow a fire to be extinguished in a short time. Activities in this area focus on minimizing the effects. There is still a need to look for new technical and tactical solutions in order to optimize the procedures leading to more effective activities of the services in this type of incidents.

Wnioski: Pożary akumulatorów Li-Ion to stosunkowo nowe i narastające zjawisko.

The article presents current research results conducted by the Motor Transport Institute in cooperation with Tesla Warszawa company. The tests include a number of test drives in real road conditions, realized in the city of Warsaw and in suburban areas. The test objects are Tesla Model S and Model X cars. The results are developed for factor and correlation analysis regarding the parameters describing road conditions and their impact on the energy demand of the car. In addition, the prepared mathematical model includes, among others, traction phenomena that occur when the tire contacts with road surface, weather conditions and driving style represented by different drivers. This model has been verified on the basis of realized road tests. The main purpose of the research is to define what characteristic battery conditions are enforced by operating an electric car in real traffic. It is influenced by such factors as: traffic density, driver’s driving style, road surface, weather conditions and technical parameters of the vehicle. The method of charging and discharging the battery while driving varies significantly from loading and unloading in laboratory conditions. Therefore, road tests are meant to show how the battery of an electric vehicle functions in practice.
